New P&C Committee The P&C plays a vital role in supporting students and programs in our school. Students benefit by the P&C managed canteens on both the primary and secondary sites. In addition the uniform shop currently operates from Di’s Clothing, and is run on a voluntary basis by Di Inder on behalf of the P&C. A special meeting of the P&C was held last week to fill the vacant positions. Congratulations to the new office bearers Matthew Cronin (President), Elaine Russell (Vice President), Ellisa Liondis (Secretary), and Carlita McConnell (Treasurer). Our new committee will take some time to find their feet. However the P&C can only be successful if it is supported by all parents and citizens. I encourage all parents to be involved in the P&C and come along to the next meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7pm at the RSL Club. Festival of the Fleeces The Festival of the Fleeces is only two weeks away. Students and teachers are preparing window displays to dress up the main street for the big event. All students are encouraged to attend on the morning of the Festival to join the parade. Bush attire of jeans, flannelette shirts and hats are welcome on the day. Changes at the Ringer Jenny Freeman has been coordinating the weekly publication for the Merriwa Ringer for the past four years. From start to finish Jenny has taken phone enquiries, published advertisements, typed emails and deciphered community notices sent in on scraps of paper, printed, and distributed the Ringer on a weekly basis. At times it can be a thankless task producing a community newsletter, given everyone has an opinion. To her credit Jenny

In class with Year 6 During the week the children have been completing assessments in maths, reading and writing. We have also been completing our sarcophagus. On Friday, Yr 6 was able to plaster their mummies with bandages. This has been a long awaited project. The children were keen and excited. The task proved a bit harder for the children than first thought. They soon worked in pairs and helped each other to wrap and smooth out the bandages.

PSSA Zone Cross Country Carnival On Friday 14 May, 19 students from our Primary campus competed in the Cross Country Carnival. All students tried their hardest, which was very pleasing to see. We had a lovely day with a couple of our students only just missing out on attending the Regional Cross Country Carnival. I was so very pleased with all students’ team spirit. We all cheered and cheered for each competitor. Thankyou to all the parents/caregivers who were able to transport and support students on the day. We hope you enjoy this photos from the day.

Primary Library Borrowing The Primary library is overflowing with interesting, exciting, funny, sad, adventurous and informative books. Reading is an essential skill for all of us and as we all know – kids who read succeed! Once a week, each of the Infants and Primary classes come to the library for a one hour session. Part of each session is devoted to reading, browsing and borrowing. It is important for students to be able to choose and borrow books they are interested in, to take them home to share with family and then to return them the following week. K/1 and 1/2 students love to talk about the books they have borrowed, and many valuable conversations are had discussing characters and their actions. All students have been given borrowing bags. The Infants children have recently been presented with beautiful and lovingly prepared bags from the View Club ladies. The ladies would love the children to use them every week. This is a plea for parents and carers to make sure the borrowing bags are in the children’s backpacks and that you share the reading of the chosen books with the children. We have had to rearrange some of the days and the classes now come in the following order.

“Be The Change” Students in Year 8 Geography will be working on Global Issues and the Role of Citizenship with the issues: climate change, land degradation, and threatened habitats by participating in the “Be the Change Tour” 2010. “Be The Change” is a multiplatform motivational and educational project that inspires young people to take positive action towards creating a more sustainable future for their community. The screenings and seminars will be held in ten schools in ten different towns in regional New South Wales, in collaboration with local school and community leaders. After seeing the film and website and experiencing the seminar (which will be filmed), the students themselves are motivated and empowered to undertake a project in response to the film. After six weeks, the hosts return to see – and document (film) – how the students have effected a change in their town. In-school screenings of The Burning Season documentary: The Burning Season is a movie-length documentary directed by Cathy Henkel and narrated by Hugh Jackman, being used as teaching resources as part of the NSW secondary geography syllabus. The film tells the story of Dorjee Sun, a young Australian environmental entrepreneur who wants to prevent the extinction of orangutans and protect Indonesia’s rainforest areas being destroyed during the annual burning seasons. The Burning Season is an eco-thriller about one young man not afraid to confront the biggest challenge of our time. An inspirational seminar for students: Presented by the assistant director of The Burning Season, Felicity Blake, the seminar brings the documentary’s message out of the film and into the classroom. The seminar facilitates the involvement of young people in the social, environmental and economic future of their community. The students explore how they can effect change, and develop a strategy to turn their plan into a reality. As the project takes shape, students will upload photos, videos and

texts to the Be The Change website. The Be the Change project in each school and its community: students will be encouraged to undertake a project which nurtures the natural environment and creates a more sustainable future for their town and the world. The projects will need to be realised within six weeks of the seminar. A follow-up visit will provide constructive feedback and document (film) the actions taken by each group. “Be The Change” media special: “Be The Change” is the media special depicting the tour. The multiplatform elements (1-hour TV show, website, etc) will be available to broadcasters and narrowcasters for traditional or online distribution. Every visit to every town will be documented by the “Be the Change” micro-crew, and edited into a range of outputs. This program could serve as a pilot or teaching tool for communities worldwide, so the idea is to educate, entertain, and inspire potential participants as well as the wider audience. Merriwa Central School Year 8 Geogpraphy participated in the screening of the movie and seminar at the school last Tuesday. From this experience the class has decided to undertake three projects: They’re Calling You - recycling old mobile phones to help save the Gorillas; Pedagogy about Palm Oil and Crazy Hair Day - teaching the community about Palm Oil; Educating the community and promoting the use of environmentally friendly bags - one off limited edition Merriwa bag. Watch this space for more information about the three projects and how you can get behind the students and help.

Letter from the President - Matthew Cronin I am writing to introduce myself; some people may already know me as I was a former student of Merriwa Central School. After leaving school I left Merriwa to pursue a heavy vehicle mechanic apprenticeship approximately 15 years ago. I have now returned to Merriwa with my wife Maxine and our two daughters Montana and Matilda. Montana has started kindergarten this year at Merriwa Central School. My wife and I have recently become members of the Merriwa Central School P&C Association and at the special meeting held on Thursday 20 May 2010 to address vacancies on the committee, I was voted in as President of the P&C. I would like to take this opportunity to invite parents, grandparents, teachers and interested citizens to attend our meetings and have a say in the running of our school P&C. All parents, carers and teachers of students of Merriwa Central School are eligible to become members of the school P&C association. All citizens living within the boundaries of the school zone are eligible to be members of the P&C association.

Anyone can attend our meetings, but a small membership fee of $2.00 is all that is required to give you voting rights on any issues presented at these meetings. The sole purpose of this association is to benefit our children and without members and volunteers this association would not be able to fulfil its obligations to our children. Throughout the year the P&C holds different

events for the benefit of our school and its students, whether it be fundraising activities such as street stalls, raffles, school fetes etc, or volunteering to help run school events and services such as horse sports canteen, sports carnival, school canteen etc. Any assistance in organising or running these events would be greatly appreciated. We will endeavour to let the local community know when these events will be taking place, and the need for help in organising and running of these events through our local community newsletter, the Ringer.

I would also like to thank our current members and volunteers for all the time and effort that they give to the running of the P&C and its associated events and services. Your time and expertise is greatly appreciated.

Once again, I would like to invite anyone interested in the running of Merriwa Central School P&C to become a member of the association and attend our meetings or become a volunteer!!

Everyone is welcome!!

P&C meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at the Merriwa RSL Club Fletcher Room at 7pm. Why not take this opportunity to come along and meet myself and the rest of the committee.

Next meeting Wednesday 2 June 2010.

CASSILIS PUBLIC SCHOOL

Congratulations to all our Award winners on Friday, and thank you to all the family members who joined us. Our awardees were: Sarah Nairne (Uniform), Shianne Mason (Sport), Charlotte Mason and Loclain Schmidt (Workers of the Week) and Mathew Haydon (Student of the Week). Congratulations also to our Reading Award recipients Sarah Nairne, Brady Nairne and Corey Nairne – well done to each of you! Weren’t our young students wonderful in presenting their descriptions? And the Dinosaur Song? Angus was eager to assist Claire in the actions – such effort and attitude must make us all feel very proud. This Wednesday we will be attending the Simultaneous Story Telling at the Cassilis Library at 11:00am. We will be leaving school at approximately 10:40 to walk to the library. Students will be taking their morning tea to the library to have after the story telling and before we start our craft activity related to the book. We will then return to school before lunch. Mrs Hilary Parker will be the Story Reader. We look forward to the story and the activities being organised to go with it. Isn’t it fantastic to be part of this community presentation? Another Disco for our Primary Schools in the Merriwa area is in the process of being organised. We will be invited, along with St Joseph’s Merriwa and Sandy Hollow to join Merriwa Central for the evening. Details will be forwarded as they come to hand. Last year’s was a fabulous night, and we hope that students will be able to attend. There will be games and dances, and all sorts of prizes (for all sorts of reasons). Thank you to all the parents who have sent in the Permission Notes for our excursion. We now have 12 students listed to attend. As we get closer to the time we will be putting out more information about the excursion and what to bring. Looks like it should be a colossal success.

Thank you also to the parents who have sent in the Festival of the Fleeces expression of interest note to walk in the parade on the Saturday of the Long Weekend. We are still waiting on a few to come in to see how many students we would have available to walk in the parade. Could we please have these notes back in by Wednesday the 26 May so we can make further plans for this day. Thank you Have a wonderful week!

Congratulations to everyone on their great description reading at our Friday Assembly. You all did an amazing job. You had the audience captured for the whole time as they were trying to work out what you were trying to describe in our ‘What am I’ descriptions. A huge well done must also go to Angus and his helper Claire for the wonderful recital of their Dinosaur song with actions. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, with even the performers having beaming smiles on their faces! Our research projects for library are starting to take shape. Everyone has been really engaged and is loving finding out and learning different things about their topic. Some groups will start thinking about how they will present their information this week. The winner of the homework award this week was Sarah Nairne and behaviour award went to Brady Nairne. Keep up the great work. I hope you all have a fantastic week. Take care.

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

Welcome to the half way mark for this term! Where have the weeks gone? The building works have progressed nicely and the walkways are ready to have the sheeting placed

on top. The teachers and children have been very patiently continuing with their studies despite the noise and activity outside their windows. Last week St Joseph’s school hosted the 3rd National E – Conference in religious studies. The last topic was “Mary – The First Disciple”. It was great to once again have so many members from the wider community join us for this event. The gatherings have been very ecumenical. The next e –conference will be held in September and focuses on ‘ Jesus, The Christ.” Pentecost was celebrated in the Church calendar last Sunday. Pentecost Sunday commemorates the gift of the Holy Spirit sent to the disciples to strengthen them for mission to spread the Good News to all men. On Pentecost Sunday we celebrate the gifts of the Holy Spirit in our own lives strengthening us for that same mission. Last Thursday our regular assembly and Liturgical celebration was dedicated to Pentecost. Next week, June 2 will be a pupil free day as our staff attends a spirituality day presented by well known ethicist Richard Leonard. This day is entitled “A Survival Guide to Sane Spirituality in Catholic Education” Fr Richard Leonard SJ directs the Australian Catholic Office for Film and Broadcasting. He lectures in cinema and theology at the United Faculty of Theology and has been a visiting lecturer in Australian cinema at the University of Melbourne. In 2003 he was a visiting scholar within the School of Theatre, Film and Television at UCLA. In 2006 Dr Leonard was a visiting professor at the Gregorian University in Rome. In 2007 Richard was appointed an honorary fellow of the Australian Catholic University. He is also

the author of a number of books. [‘Movies That Matter: Reading Film Through the Lens of Faith’ and ‘Preaching to the Converted Throughout the Sundays and Feast Days of the Year’ (my research!)] The Australian Curriculum has been presented to the Australian people in draft form recently and the consultation period is drawing to a close. Members of our staff have been involved in the consultation process both formally and informally, and have been able to provide feedback to the government, both positive and negative aspects of the curriculum as we see it. This is a great opportunity to try to ensure that the new curriculum actually meets our needs and is practical for implementation in our schools. The curriculum documents that have been issued so far are English, Maths, History and Science. Networking amongst teachers of the same grade is a valuable opportunity that teachers at our school rarely have the opportunity to avail themselves. Last week Mrs Frampton was able to spend a day in Lochinvar with other Stage Three teachers from around the diocese to share resources and compare teaching strategies. She is bursting with enthusiasm and ready to pass on all that she has learned with her class. On Wednesday I will be attending my regular Director - Principals day. This time the day will be held in Singleton instead of Newcastle. I am very grateful to the Director of Catholic Schools and the principals of the diocese for agreeing to make the huge trek out to the Upper Hunter to experience something of our part of the world. There will be many amongst our group who have never ventured this far west before. Thank you to Cassie Porter for her wonderful work as P&F president this year. We have enjoyed Cassie’s input at the meetings and of course her very professional presentation of the Mother’s Day luncheon. Cassie has resigned from her position as president but

MERRIWA PRE-SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION

Merriwa Pre-school Enrolments for 2011 Yes! It’s that time of the year already! We are now taking enrolments for next year. Places tend to go very quickly and we strongly recommend that you place your child’s name on the Waiting List now, even if you intend on sending them towards the end of 2011. We offer positions for 2-5 year old children, with the options of half or full days. We ask parents to carefully consider the days that you allocate for your child. Where possible, if your child will attend Kindergarten the following year, we are encouraging parents to attend the Wednesday and Friday as a two day pattern, and possibly a Monday for a one day session. The younger groups will have the option of a half or full day on a Tuesday or Thursday. We especially encourage children with special needs to be enrolled now, in order for appropriate funding and programs to be addressed in advance. Parents are welcome to drop in or phone 6548 2083 to place details on the Waiting List. The most convenient time for this is on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon. Today in home corner we saw a wonderful collaborative effort by a group of girls: Kiesha –Lee, Ella T, Grace, Darcy and Ella B are all showing us their nurturing side as well as their ability to work together. With our African performance in mind (we had been talking about how natural materials may have other uses) I had brought along a huge palm leaf. Placed in home corner with a baby inside, it could have really done the job of a baby’s cradle…..in fact, with a human swing……it did! You really had to be there to absorb how very special this spontaneous moment was. As Miss Leah sang, the girls seemed to get a natural rhythm going without any effort at all. All of the following came to mind—Caring and nurturing, Teamwork and co-operation, The language of music, Creative thinking, Rhythm.

Without a word being spoken, each of the girls seemed intuitive of their own role. It reminded me of a rowing team – synchronized and true team work. The group working as one. The moment had it all. It was precious. The easy rhythm they had going was in time to Leah’s singing with no fumbles or struggles to all get moving together. It just seemed effortless and as if they had rehearsed it many times before

MERRIWA PHARMACY Incontinence – much more than an inconvenience Continence problems are common in the community with almost 20% of all Australians affected. And yet, despite the fact that in most cases the condition can be well controlled – and often cured – only a third of sufferers seek help; probably due to ignorance or embarrassment. Put simply, incontinence means the loss of voluntary control over bladder or bowel function. It may not be life threatening, but incontinence can significantly impact on quality of life and is sometimes a sign of more serious health problems. Signs of poor or weak bladder and loss of urine control include frequency – wanting to go to the toilet frequently; nocturia – waking up to go to the toilet more than twice at night; urgency – sudden urges to go to the toilet; and the involuntary or unintentional loss of urine from the bladder – that is wetting pants or wetting the bed. While studies show that women are many times more likely to be affected by incontinence than men, men are far less likely to do anything about it. Incontinence in men is largely related to prostate problems. Simple age-related prostate gland enlargement is often the cause and a recent study found that 60% of men are affected by incontinence following surgery for prostate cancer. Also, medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity, constipation and chronic cough can cause or aggravate continence problems. So, any bladder and

bowel symptoms should be treated along with the underlying condition. As we get older incontinence certainly becomes more prevalent and more severe but incontinence is not just part of the ageing process. Certainly some age-related conditions increase the risk – conditions such as stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease or simply impaired mobility. And more than half of all residents in nursing homes – both men and women – have bladder control problems. Nevertheless, poor bladder and urine control can happen to anyone at any age and other factors which increase risk are menopause, pregnancy, childbirth, having borne children, being overweight and urinary tract infections. Some medicines may cause or worsen incontinence – and there’s quite a long list of them. If incontinence is more than just an occasional inconvenience for you, check with your pharmacist if any of the medicines you take could be the cause. Ironically, some medicines that are used to treat certain types of incontinence may actually increase the likelihood of another type. Ingredients found in some non-prescription products can be a problem as well; and complementary medicines with a diuretic effect can also contribute to incontinence — as can valerian, kava and St. Johns wort, with their weak sedative and antidepressant effects. Not surprisingly, because of their diuretic effect, alcohol and the drinks containing

caffeine - tea, coffee and so–called energy drinks - can all contribute to continence problems. Even so, adequate fluid intake (1.5 – 2 litres per day) is generally advisable to avoid irritation of the bladder. Management of incontinence aims to both reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. For mild or occasional symptoms, treatment without medicines may be sufficient; and even when the symptoms are more severe, these exercise, lifestyle and dietary changes are usually an important part of the management strategy.

Pelvic floor exercises are first-line treatment for some forms of incontinence and a useful prevention strategy to improve bladder control for both men and women. The procedure is described in some detail on the Pelvic Floor Exercises fact card. This “card” and the others on Bladder and Urine Control, Urinary Tract Infections and Prostate Problems provide simple, self help hints and great advice on how to manage incontinence. They are available from Merriwa Pharmacy.

TRINITY MARKETS

Welcome to the news from Trinity Markets, your local op shop where you can always “Dress for Less”!

All our wonderful volunteers are invited to join in the Anglican Parish Picnic, on Saturday May 29.

It starts at 11am on Ted and Jenny Finnie’s property “Eagles’ Drift” and promises to be a day filled with fun. Come along and enjoy a day in the great outdoors! It’s a bring-and-share lunch and you’ll need a fold-up chair, a card table if you have one, a rug and of course a hat and good walking shoes.

To get to the Finnies’ you take the Cassilis Road for 8km, turn left into Wollar Road and travel 14km to Neverfail Road where you turn right, then just keep going for around 8km until you reach “Eagles’ Drift”. You’ll be very welcome! For more phone Jenny on 6548 5171.

Trinity Markets has lots of other news to share - but some of the details change day by day, and what the situation is when the Ringer goes to print, may not be the situation by the time you get to read it. So, if you need to discuss anything about the shop urgently,

please phone Enid on 6548 2948 or 0417 482 940 to find out the latest. At our last meeting we decided to give away our washing machine to a good home. It has a couple of funny little ways but washes quite well, and being a front-door design it is economical with water usage. If you’d like to find out more, please phone Enid on one of the above numbers. Many thanks to all those great people who bring in their donations, so that our customers can benefit by re-using them. Our donations bin is still at the back of the shop (you know where we are, next to the Ironbark Cafe), and everyone is welcome to leave their goods there, or bring them into the shop during business hours. If you have something you don’t want displayed in Merriwa, just drop it into the Samaritans bin halfway up the hill in Bow Street next to Holy Trinity church and we’ll see it goes to Newcastle. It all goes to a good cause. That’s all for now, take care,

Enid and Friends

MERRIWA HARDWARE Welcome back to the trio of loyal readers who continuously show real stamina in reading my dribble week after week after week. Well done! Anyway, as mentioned in last weeks Ringer, we will be having our official Grand Opening of the new site for Merriwa Hardware & McConnells This'n'That, this Saturday 29. Come down and check out the new store, grab a free feed from the sausage sizzle and pick up one of the many bargains that will be available on the day. Some of the specials that will available are; plastic bucket only $1.00. Perhaps a 2000w compact heater for only $15.95, for the night time chills a queen size tie down electric blanket for $59.95, or maybe an Earthcore fibreglass handle axe or blocksplitter for the firewood for only $31.50. Also, for the first 100 customers, if you make a purchase over $20.00, you will receive a free hammer (limit of 1 per customer). So there you have it. Free sausage sizzle, free hammers and there will also be other free stuff to be given away on the day.

In the middle of writing this I've just had the painters in regarding the signage for the shopfront. The short story is that if miracles happen, it will be finished by the time the opening happens. Not confident though. Things are slooowly being sorted out and rearranged. Ticketing is a little bit slower, much like me really. Trying to find time to put a couple of wheelbarrows together - not happening! I guess that's about it for this week. Did you know? A 'jiffy' is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second!.

The local student hosts the New Zealand student and includes them in their normal family life. This is an exciting way to experience another culture with the support of Rotary. HOSPITALITY CLASS THANKS THE RSL CLUB AND MAX’S COUNTRY CUTS The Hospitality students and I would like to thank Mathew Morgan and the Board of the RSL Club for allowing us to use their kitchen every Wednesday to conduct our class in a valuable learning environment while our new Trade Centre is being constructed at Merriwa Central School. We have been working at the Club since the start of Term 1 and six students would not be able to commence their Kitchen Operations Trade Certificate 2 without this generosity. The effort and support from the chefs who work there only adds to the real life experience for the students and is greatly appreciated by us all. If anyone from the community would like to add to this experience, lunch is available at the club from 11.30 to 2pm, so come on down and visit us. I would like to thank Max and Cameron at Max’s Country Cuts for exposing the Hospitality students to “Life as a butcher” last Wednesday. The visits to our local businesses help students to decide where they may want to work as adults and again I would like to thank the generosity of Max and Cameron.

Upper Hunter Shire Council, with the assistance of the community and businesses, will sponsor six (6) berths (3 male and 3 female) on Australia’s sail training ship STS Young Endeavour for an 11 day voyage from Hobart to Sydney, 5 to 15 December 2010.

For over twelve years, young people in our area have been provided the opportunity to participate in the Young Endeavour Scheme and Council is seeking support and financial assistance for this innovative youth program. Nominations are currently being sought and information evenings are being held at the Council Chambers in Scone and Merriwa on Wednesday, 26 May commencing at 7pm. Potential nominating groups, nominees and sponsors are invited to attend to learn more about the Young Endeavour Scheme.

Corey Thompson – STS Young Endeavour Youth Crew Member November/December 2009 (nominated by Scone High School) said of his experience that “The whole voyage was rewarding, from climbing the mast to making new friends. The friends that I have made on this voyage have now become long time friends that I will never forget. I would say to people thinking of going for it would be - do it. It is the most rewarding thing you will ever do.”

Mayor Lee Watts urges all community organisations to support this wonderful experience. “Young people in rural areas rarely get to experience the wonders of ocean voyages particularly on a tall ship; Council wishes to

continue to support this scheme and asks consideration in sponsorship and nominations from all organisations in the Upper Hunter Shire.” If you would like to discuss the benefits of your business or organisation being involved in this scheme or for further information, please contact Jodie Phelps on 6540 1142 or visit Council’s website www.upperhunter.nsw.gov.au

UPPER HUNTER LANDSCAPE GUARDIANS

Local landholder Stephen Higgs shares his Wind Turbine experience: “When we were approached last year by a Wind Farm Developer to consider leasing a little unproductive land on the ridges surrounding Terragong, for Wind Turbines, it seemed to be ‘money for old rope’. ‘Help generate renewable energy... harvest the wind and earn well-needed cash...’ The only thing that surprised us was that we had never considered Merriwa as ‘windy.’ In fact, olive trees don’t fruit very well in windy conditions. However, with towers reaching up to 175 metres on top of the ridges – who knows? So, six months ago we started a thorough investigation. As the Henderson family near Scone had agreed to a wind farm on their property, we started by reading over 3,000 pages prepared by experts, commissioned by the Developer as its Environmental Assessment Report supporting Kyoto Energy Park. Instead of reinforcing our interest in doing something similar in Merriwa, this information raised many serious concerns. We had grossly underestimated the potential impact of Wind Farming on Merriwa. We knew we needed much more information from Europe and the USA. Then we became very concerned. Denmark has done more in Wind Farming than anywhere. If the Chairman of Energy in the Danish Parliament is quoted as saying that Wind Farms are “a terribly expensive disaster,” then maybe it is not as smart an idea as we first thought. Our research gave rise to more questions about the potential health impact of Wind Farming. Experience is showing a well-defined Wind Turbine Syndrome. Promoters and their experts can report only on historically established scientific evidence. However, anecdotal observation is now showing that living near transmission lines causes health (cancer) hot spots. If we have a Wind Farm, others may also have them - so where will all the transmission lines go? We started to ask ourselves: Do we want to turn Merriwa into a power station?

We then realised that one important reason we acquired property in Merriwa over 23 years ago was its pristine healthy environment – to provide the bodies of our children with an escape from the constant city background of radiation, electro-magnetic forces, mobile phone towers and power lines criss-crossing their lives. Our view is that all these forces contribute to an escalation of many diseases in city youth. This raised the question about the impact on land values. We then spoke to several other city people who had purchased land in Merriwa. All, like us, said emphatically that ‘no way in the world would we have acquired land in Merriwa if it was a Wind Turbine Town.’ That took us back to the article in The Sydney Morning Herald (April 2010) claiming that Wind Farm Developers have ripped out development profits of $59 million to $88 million and the headline... ‘Making Money Out of Nothing – INDEED’. The danger to the community of Merriwa is that the real costs of making this short-term profit could be; The health of our children and the value of our land. When a community is threatened with change, it usually has a voice and access to a proper cost-benefit analysis. The danger for Merriwa is that our local council, and the State Government, seem unable to resist a) the pressure of big business, or b) the desire to show action on renewable energy (and wind farms are obvious to all.) Therefore it is up to those of us, who are considering leasing country for Wind Turbines, to consider wisely – because no-one else will stop these Wind Turbines moving up the Valley. We are alarmed at how we were so attracted, initially, to leasing land for Wind Turbines. Please don’t make the mistake we might have made, by considering too lightly the impact of Wind Turbines on Merriwa.”

Stephen Higgs Terragong, Merriwa

WOOLBROOK INDUSTRIES

About 1925 my father bought a property between Carinda and Brewarrina in western NSW before moving to Merriwa in 1945. I was born in Brewarrina, which is about 60 miles up the river from Bourke, and in those distant days, 85 years ago, it was wild country. The primitive roads were almost entirely bush tracks with rare earth formations which shed water and dried out quickly but were very slippery when wet, and if a vehicle slid off into the table drain alongside it was trouble indeed. We had good neighbours including a family named Gleeson, and John Gleeson had financed his property by winning the handicapped Stawell Gift foot race in Victoria somewhere about 1870 or 1880. The Western Division of NSW is all lease titles and one of the lease conditions with which John had to comply was that he must live on the property. It did not have a house so he camped for years in an old hut on a neighbour’s place a few hundred yards from his boundary. A Lands Department inspector turned up one day, discovered that technically he was not living on the property, and recommended that his lease therefore be terminated. The case was to be heard by a magistrate in Walgett which was 75 miles (about 125 kilometres away) so John Gleeson had to go there to defend himself. This was obviously not a matter of jumping in a car for a day trip, if only because cars had not even been invented, so he mounted his horse (or harnessed it to a sulky if he could afford one, which he probably couldn’t), and slept rough on the way unless somebody gave him shelter. When the case was heard the Magistrate dismissed it out of hand, said it was ridiculous it had ever been brought, tore strips off the Inspector, and John Gleeson travelled 125 kilometres back home. Where bureaucracy is concerned, nothing changes!! In those days there were many small villages around the bush, most of which have long disappeared or, like Bow, even though they still show on old maps with carefully marked out streets, never really existed. Carinda is still there, but now a mere shadow of its former very modest self. In those days most such small settlements had a racetrack of sorts and, while they were crude and probably

dangerous by today’s standards, the district gathered there occasionally for race meetings. The Gleesons had a horse, Sonny Jim, which was virtually unbeatable, which seems appropriate when you consider it was owned by a man who had won Australia’s, and one of the world’s, premier foot races. Sonny Jim won almost every race he was entered into for miles around, and when I was about twelve years old and heard this discussed I realised it was time to become a betting man. Unfortunately, there was not a bookmaker prepared to accept my money (nor anyone else’s money for that matter) so I went to my father for an explanation. This eventually led to a discussion on handicapping, though I doubt that races in those days in that part of the world were ever so sophisticated as to involve handicapping, it was probably all start even and the best horse wins. Of course there are many ways of handicapping, for instance when John Gleeson won his foot race he had obviously not been handicapped quite enough, otherwise he would not have won the Gift; or in the case of a horse it is a matter of how much lead the handicappers put in its saddlebags; or with golfers, so many strokes, though I do not even pretend to know exactly how that system works. Whatever the method, the ideal finish, the ultimate objective, for a handicapper in a horse race, a foot race, a golf match or whatever, is achieved in the unlikely event that every horse, every runner, every golfer, dead heats and they all cross the line exactly equal. However, it has been my experience in life that in every aspect, including handicapping, in any situation where a dollar can be made by means legal or illegal, there will always be a cheat, a thief, a con man, a scam merchant, trying to take advantage of that situation by any means, whether fair or foul. Using horse racing as an example, there have been innumerable attempts to profit from handicapping even to the ultimate, i.e. substituting (or attempting to substitute) a good horse (big handicap) for a known poor performer (small handicap) such as Fine Cotton.

GRUNDFOS PUMPS

Grundfos specialise in pumps and pumping equipment and are perhaps the world’s largest pump

manufacturers. They make an enormous range of every conceivable kind, including pressure pumps, end suction,

multi stage, submersibles, sump, sewage and drainage pumps and many more, and from very small units to giants with capacities up to about 60,000 gallons per

hour and lifts to about 400 metres with the ability to be coupled in parallel to pump almost any quantity.

BIG OR LITTLE, TALK TO US, WE ARE GRUNDFOS DEALERS!!!

Few of us want to see any team competition dominated by a few wealthy clubs simply because their money enables them to buy the best players, and there are at least two ways of preventing this, both a form of handicapping. The first is the “draft” where the governing body directs players to certain clubs in such a fashion as to try to make all teams equal. This system can be unpopular, for instance, to take an extreme example, if you were playing League in north Queensland and were drafted to Canberra you might find that inconvenient. An alternative, as used by the National Rugby League and other sporting bodies, is the “salary cap” where, in the case of the NRL, a price is put on every player’s head and the total for any club must not exceed $4.1 million, a rich field for skulduggery.

MERRIWA SPRINGTIME SHOW

This year’s NAB Merriwa Springtime Show on September 17 and 18 will be excitement plus, with some fabulous new attractions joining the old favourites in two days of fast and furious action. “Merriwa’s Got Talent” on the Saturday evening will showcase a wide range of entertainment skills. Everyone, from toddlers to adults plus (55 and over), is welcome to come along and have a go. If you’re into music, poetry, comedy or dancing, start planning your performance now, so you’ll be in top form by Show time. We held a talent quest at the show several years ago and the main prize winner was Brendan Houlahan, who (wait for it) threaded himself through a tennis racquet (minus the strings)! He also had a friend on the mike to give a running commentary, which really gave the act a touch of professional polish. Substantial prize money will be on offer this time around - and who knows, if you get it right on the night, you too could find yourself in Merriwa Show’s Hall of Fame!

Details of the sections, times etc. will be available in the next couple of weeks. For more info phone Enid Holt on 0417 482 940 or Hugh Kraefft on 0402 484 018. Last year the Show’s junior rodeo proved very popular with the crowd and the competitors, so this time around we are catering for a wider age range, and a bigger choice of events. A stalwart of Merriwa Show, Doug Porter is organising this section and we thank him for his enthusiasm and dedication. More news about these events as the Show comes closer. Q: What’s a Demonstration Demolition Derby? A: It’s fun, it’s fast, it’s furious, and it’s coming to Merriwa Show on Saturday September 18! Thanks to input from organisers at other Shows, who have been running DDs for several years, we are beginning in 2010 with a demonstration DD, and working up to a full program next year. These are quite mind-boggling to watch - and most of the action takes place in reverse gear. Total Destruction! Don’t miss it! Times etc. will be announced shortly as arrangements are confirmed. The ute section for 2010 will be bigger and better, with spectacular events and a ringside display similar to the one that was so popular in 2009. Many thanks to the hard-working organisers from Cross Country Mahindra and sponsors. Without our sponsors many of the events at the Show would not go ahead and we thank them all sincerely for their support. Other attractions at the Show will include a Triple Crown Challenge (point score with horse, quad bike and ute), and the ever-popular Heritage Games for the children. Finally, don’t forget if you are a member, your membership and car stand fees are due. Just contact Emma Henderson on 0407 425 782 if you need more details. See you at the Show.

ELDERS

Get more Bang for your Buck with Activist Zinc Did you know that many of the soils in the Merriwa district have low levels of zinc? Zinc is a trace element which many people over look the importance of in broad acre cereals. Zinc deficiency can have a significant impact on yields, grain and plant protein content and dry matter production in its own right if not corrected early. Zinc is associated with the formation of chlorophyll and protein, the functioning of numerous plant hormones, including those which assist root development, and the uptake and efficient use of water. You may have noticed that after spraying some group B herbicides such as Metsulfuron (Ally) or Chlorsulfuron (Glean), that cereal crops tend to yellow and their growth rates slow. Activist Zinc has a remediating effect on the crop to assist the crop to growth through the negative effect these herbicides may have, resulting in an increase in dry matter production. Applications of zinc can be made via a seed dressing prior to sowing or an application via a foliar spray before the five leaf stage. In cases of a moderate to severe deficiency, both a seed dressing and a foliar application may be used. Both of these methods have been used in the district over the last couple of years, with positive results seen locally on many occasions. Activist zinc is compatible with many herbicides and insecticides used early in the season, and at $6.56/Ha including GST can be a very cheap option to provide you with increased dry matter production for your forage crop and grain yields. Activist Zinc is currently in stock at Elders Merriwa so for further information, please do not hesitate to call Elders Merriwa on 02 6548 2307.

MERRIWA FESTIVAL OF THE FLEECES Wanted - the committee are looking for anyone who has a hooped petticoat that we can either hire, buy or borrow for the Festival Parade. I have managed to source some very nice Period Costumes for the Parade however we need about six hooped petticoats for these costumes. We have looked at hiring them however I am having trouble finding enough locally to hire - the other option is to purchase them so that we will have them for future events however at this stage funds are limited and this may not be possible. So have a think about it - do you have a hooped petticoat tucked away somewhere or know someone who may have - please give us a call if you are happy to sell, lend or hire a petticoat.

Free Hammers at Merriwa’s Brand New Thrifty Link

Hardware Store!

Merriwa’s new hardware store officially opens this Saturday and is celebrating the event by giving away a FREE hammer to the first 100

customers who spend $20 or more on the day.

Merriwa Hardware recently joined forces with McConnell’s This ‘n’ That to open a purpose built home improvement one stop

shop in Bettington Street Merriwa.

Boasting over 400 square metres of floor space, the new store contains many great new ranges not previously available in Merriwa.

According to store owners Ray & Carlita McConnell, “Around 6 months ago we made the decision to leave True Value Hardware and join the Thrifty Link Hardware group which has allowed us to grow

the business & open the doors on our brand new store”

Thrifty Link Hardware is a national network of hardware stores that are all locally owned & operated but are backed up by the combined

strength of Australia’s largest retailer, Woolworths & the second largest hardware company in the United States, Lowes.

The new store will officially open its doors on Saturday 29 May at 9.00am. Come on down and take advantage of some great specials

and get a free sausage sandwich compliments of Merriwa Hardware and McConnells This’n’That.

MERRIWA JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE & NETBALL

Under 9’s Football Last week we travelled to Denman and played Singleton White. Unfortunately we lost, but the team made a great improvement from the week before especially with our tackling. Because of that we all got man of the match. During the week we had Riley Deasey join our team which now gives us a full team of eight players (but more would be good!). Last Saturday we travelled to Singleton and took on the Denman Devils White. We won by two points due to some great teamwork. Riley scored two tries and Joseph scored one. Conversions were made by Cameron Ninness, Riley and Christopher. Man of the match was Christopher for a strong game especially in the last two thirds. Thank you to our coach’s Jeremy and Judd and our parents for taking us.

Little Ninno

Played Singleton at Singleton. The boys continued to improve showing good defense in phases. Their attack was the best it has been all year with a number of good runs. Cody, Callum and Zeb all had strong running games. Callum Telfer scored a good try after running straight, busting through and running 50 metres to score. Next week we are at Muswellbrook.

weekend. The June rally day will consist of riders participating in the team penning competition (you should have entries to Cassandra by now) and some sporting events and other activities set up in the arena for riders to do. Keep checking your emails for pony club information.

petite player Gay was making some big hits down the centre of the fairways particularly on the par fives to get some four pointers. Well done Gay. It’s great to have Diny back on the course. Diny has had a long break from golf due to a shoulder reconstruction (see its not just footballers who have these injuries) and even with some lingering restrictions with her swing Diny managed a very creditable 27 points. Look out for further improvement! Mary succumbed to peer pressure and is now stalking the course with her motorised buggy, new bag and dare we say it, a new six iron, and these things are making her a force to be reckoned with. Another good round of 37 points put Mary in 3rd spot behind Gay and Sue and it looks like her cruisy handicap is in jeopardy. The girls are off on their Narrabri expedition next week, good luck to those nutters with putters for their three pressurised rounds of competition. We have had some beautiful weather to play golf of late but we would happily play in teeming rain if it meant we could have several inches before the cold weather sets in. The course is dry and so are all the paddocks around the district so heres hoping for a few wet golf days soon.

PONY CLUB Congratulations to Anastasia Martin who played polocrosse at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in April. It was a pleasure to see the juniors play. Watch this space for more information on Anastasia's experience at Sydney. I had the information and stupidly deleted it from my emails! My apologies to Anastasia! MERRIWA RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB

Merriwa headed to Denman on Sunday with their loyal fans to play their second game of the season. After 2 weekends off due to bye’s the Magpies were definitely ready to get back on the field. The Magpies started a tad rusty letting Denman sneak in the first try. Chad passed out wide to our speedy centre Matt Mead who ran flat out to get Merriwa’s first. Denman hit back to get their second. Ben Morgan with an outstretched arm just made it over the line to score again. Half time score: Merriwa 10 to Denman 12. The Magpies gave a good fight in the second half but again lacking match fitness giving Denman the break to get 4 quick tries. Minutes before the final siren Nathan put a chip kick in, Brock went high and snatched the

ball from the Denman winger and slid down to get the last points for the game. Final score– Denman defeated Merriwa 34 to 16.

Chad got 2 from 3 conversions. Anthony Kirk and Ben Blyton played hard with 21 tackles between them showing they will be valuable assets to the team. Nathan, Brock, Ben M, Pitty and Chad led the play and never gave up. Our centre’s Matt Mead and Binksy fought for possession all day. Wayde, Gary and John showed great enthusiasm for their size. Keany had a cracker of a game and also sporting battle scars after an illegal head high. Brothers Liam and Rory need only 2 words to describe their display – all heart. Our 100 club was drawn on Saturday 22 May by Justine Witney and the winners were- 1st – Jane Constable no 79 2nd – The Hagley family no 72 3rd – Loretta Cooper no 31 The Trailer load of firewood was drawn on Saturday 22 May by Mark Kirkland. The winner was Deidre Peebles. Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone who supported and helped our local club!! Our next game is this weekend against Murrurundi at home, Saturday 29 May at 2pm.

Being our first home game we hope you all can come to watch the action and cheer us on!
