HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 250, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Paramount Communications and all rights are

reserved.

Greetings, If you were not at the Alabama Phoenix Festival then you miss a lot. We had Lee Shackleford who wrote for Star Trek: The Next Generation and David Duncan who did concept designs for Star Trek Enterprise. Lee Shackeford with 3 other guests did a dramatic reading of the War of the World Radio broadcast. Also, Adam Baldwin was a great guest with his stories from Firefly and Chuck. The convention went very well so they will be doing it again next year. If you have any topics of interest you would like to see in the newsletter send your articles or updates to

[email protected]. See you around the ship.

I have just a couple of reminders this month. First, remember that we have combined our meeting and

social. Both will take place on the second Saturday of the month at the Mohney’s. Check the schedule in The

Anvil for last minute changes. Also, remember to check the Renewal Reminders in The Anvil for the status of

your Starfleet membership.

In addition, I’m looking forward to the next major social event, the Captain’s Cookout, which will take

place on July 14. The festivities will probably start about 2:00 pm and will include activities for the officers

and crew as well as activities for the cadets. Bring whatever food you plan to put on the grill, and if you’re

lucky Pete will cook it for you. Drinks and snacks will be provided, but if you have a favorite side dish bring it

along. Watch for Pete’s announcement on the Hephaestus list. Well folks, that’s all for this month. See you at

the social.

May 19, 2012 – Social:

We had a fun time together. We discussed the upcoming Alabama Phoenix Festival and watched TV.

Attendance: 7 people.

May 25-27, 2012 – Alabama Phoenix Festival

The ship sponsored the Trek Trak at the Alabama Phoenix Festival. This was a good opportunity to meet other people interested in Star Trek and work with another fan club the U.S.S. Lexington. The Starfleet recruitment panel brought several interested people. Starfleet Quarter Master also had a table that did very well at the convention.

Attendance: 10 crew members

Personnel Updates:

Cadet Haley Youngblood graduated Springville High School on May 22, 2012. She has been a member

of the USS Hephaestus for several years, and had won the Region 2 Academic award for Cadets several times.

She will be attending The University of Montevallo this fall. Congrats to Haley.

If you have anything you would like to share with the group of your accomplishments please email them

to me at: [email protected]

The nominees for the 2012 Television Critics Association Awards were announced Wednesday June 6, 2012. Star Trek has received a few nods in the nomination. Star Trek is up for the Heritage Award. It is up against Lost co-created, of course, by J.J. Abrams who directed the latest Star Trek Movie. The other nod is to William Shatner who is up for the Career Achievement Award against Dick Clark, Andy Griffith, David Letterman, and Regis Philbin.

The Television Critics Association is a group of journalists who cover the television industry across all media. The winners of the 2012 TCA Awards will be announced during a presentation ceremony on July 28, 2012. Please join the Hephaestus in wishing Star Trek and William Shatner good luck on the big night.

Looking for some humor to read then check out John Scalzi’s Redshirts: A Novel in three Codas. This might not have been on your reading list because it is not a Star Trek novel but uses the Redshirt death premise of Star Trek as its major focal point of the story.
