THE COLLEGE EMBLEMATMA DEEPOBHAVA

The logo adopted by the college, Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala is one of the most remarkable mudras (palms and fingers in different shapes and

positions conveying different ideas) of Buddha. The ‘Mudra’ shows the right forefinger bending over the tip of the thumb

and the other fingers erect. It represents Buddha’s “Vyakhamudra” with a half opened lotus signifying preaching of wisdom and enlightenment of mind and soul through learning and pursuing truth. he lotus in the

logo stands for sanctity and purity . The motto of the college“Atma Deepobhava” also

signifies the same. It means, “be thou the light unto thyself” (‘Be you your own guide’). The

Buddha preached that the disciples should sift and scrutinize what they had been taught and judge for themselves. His own life ‘was a

living example of his dictum’ and this shows the abundant confidence the Buddha had in man and his abilities.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala, was founded in the year 1983 as an affiliated college to Acharya Nagarjuna University, and is named after the presiding deities of the city-Goddess Durga and Lord Malleswara. The college is located at Venkateswarapuram in the heart of the City. It is gifted with ideal surroundings, which provide conducive atmosphere that helps in uninterrupted functioning of the institution. The students of this college manifested their innate potentialities with the able guidance of their teachers and won laurels for their outstanding performance in their academic pursuits at the University level. The college is also on a sound footing in extra-curricular activities.

Autonomous status was conferred on the college in the Academic Year 2003-04 for Degree courses. Two PG courses, M.Com and M.Sc - Mathematics, were also started in 2003-04. Autonomy paved the way for the introduction of many courses such as certificate courses and diversified courses to meet modern demands. The college is accredited by NAAC at B++ Level in May, 2006.

THE ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT (AQAR) of the IQAC

Plan of Action:

1. To encourage staff members to apply for research projects

and seminar grants.

2. To strengthen Tutor- Ward- System.

3. Imparting communication skills among the students by

introducing speak English drive on the campus.

4. To introduce number of self-employment courses under part-

III.

5. Arranging Education Tours and Field Trips for imparting

practical knowledge among the students.

6. To provide free placement training to all final year

students.

7. To Provide ICET – Integrated Common Entrance Test coaching

for all the Final Year students.

8. To start NO MORE TEARS, a forum for social activities to

strengthen extension activities of all the departments in

the College.

9. To launch more Job oriented certificate courses.

10.To instruct all the departments to conduct Remedial

Classes.

PART-B1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the

institution:This institution has intellectual potentiality and

infrastructural facilities. Hence faculty members are encouraged to publish papers in their respective disciplines. They are also encouraged to attend orientation programmes, faculty development programmes so as to

acquaint themselves with latest skills and techniques in their fields which they disseminate to the students. Faculties are also encouraged to attend workshops, symposia and present papers in seminars at national and international level.

To encourage the latent creativity of students, competitions are organized in debating, elocution, essay writing, quiz, music and drama. Science exhibitions and surveys on contemporary issues are also held. The college provides excellent opportunities to develop leadership qualities through NCC, NSS, Rotaract Club and Annual FETE. Thus, the great vision of Siddhartha Academy of General & Technical Education and the mission and goals of the institution are reflected in the curriculum.

2. New academic programmes initiated (UG & PG):

17 Add-on courses are started.

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction:The Programme committee formulates new courses relevant to the emerging needs and advancements in each discipline. The teachers develop course material for such courses. Syllabi are unitized month wise at the department level before the commencement of the academic session and the same is published in the college handbook and in the college calendar. The teachers maintain dairies where they note down units of syllabus covered and other academic activities they participated. The Head of the Department periodically reviews the progress regarding the completion of the syllabus and it is monitored by the principal very month. 1. Department of Commerce converted B.Com general section

into B.Com Computer Applications from the academic year 2008-09 onwards there by enabling them to have wider knowledge in Computer Applications and to get placements in Industries.

2. Department of Chemistry: Revised the syllabus in order to meet the growing needs of the Industry and to help students to appear for P.G entrance examinations.

3. Department of English: Lab was fully equipped and practical training to all the second year students were made compulsory in their curriculum to meet the future challenges in their career.

Auditorium, Gandhi Nagar, Vijayawada, to chalk out the service activities on 26-07-2008

In collaboration with Red Cross unit, N.S.S units of our college arranged Blood Grouping Camp for the I Degree students from 16th to 19th, July 2008.

The N.S.S volunteers distributed saplings to the students on 07-08-2008. Smt Mallika Begum, Mayor, Vijayawada was the Chief Guest Deputy Mayor M. Narasingh Raj & M. N. Chowdary, Corporater were also present.

20 N.S.S volunteers participated in the Pulse Polio programme and administered Polio Drops for 4 days at Chitti Nagar, Vijayawada from 14-09-2008 to 17-09-2008.

The two N.S.S Programme Officers attended a meeting at Rotary Red Cross Blood Bank Auditorium, Gandhi Nagar, Vijayawada, on 23-09-2008.

20 volunteers assisted the patients at Rajiv Arogyasri Mega Medical Camp, organized by State Government at Makineni Basavapunayya Indoor Stadium on 27-09-2008.

On the occasion of World Blood Donation Day on 1-10-2008, the two N.S.S units of our college organized a Blood Donation Camp on 29-09-2008 in association with Rotary Red Cross Blood Bank. Dr P. Madan Mohan, Medical Officer, IRCS, Vijayawada was the Chief Guest.50 volunteers participated in the camp. One staff member and 20 volunteers voluntarily donated the blood.

As per the instructions from Acharya Nagarjuna University, 2-10-2008 was observed as Non – Violence Day.

Smt J. Vasantha Kumari, Principal, Programme Officers, staff and N.S.S volunteers took a pledge to practice non-violence. The two N.S.S Programme Officers and 50 volunteers attended a Training Programme on 25-09-2008 conducted at P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts & Science regarding services to be extended at Durga Temple during Dasara festival.

50 volunteers supplied water and guided the pilgrims at Kanaka Durga Temple during Dasara Navarathrulu from 30-09-2008 to 10-10-2008.

The N.S.S volunteers participated in the Clean and Green programme on the campus thrice a week.

20 N.S.S volunteers participated in the distribution of Filaria Tablets from 11-11-2008 to 13-11-2008 in the surrounding areas of Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala, Vijayawada.

8 volunteers attended a Training Programme conducted by Red Cross Unit, Gandhi Nagar, Vijayawada from 14-11-2008 to 16-11-2008.

The two N.S.S Programme Officers Smt K. Padmaja Devi & Smt K. Sree Lakshmi attended Training and Orientation Programme from 12-11-2008 to 21-11-2008 at Acharya Nagarjuna University conducted by Training and Orientation Centre, Andhra University, Vizag.

In the Cultural, Literary and Rangoli competitions conducted for N.S.S voulnteers of our college on 24-11-2008- M.L.Prasanna, II B.Com secured I prize and G. Naga Swathi, III MPC bagged II prize in Rangoli, N. Kanaka Durga, got I prize, Rajya Lakshmi, I B.Com/c secured II prize and N. Vara Lakshmi, I MSCA got III prize in Essay Writing, M. Vijaya Lakshmi, I MSCA got I prize, N. Vara Lakshmi, I MSCA secured II prize in Singing, N. Kanaka Durga, II B.A secured I prize, V. Gayathri, III MPC got II prize and N. Vara Lakshmi, I MSCA bagged III prize in elocution.

On the eve of World AIDS Awareness Day, N.S.S units of our college arranged a seminar on “AIDS- Awareness” by P.Suman, Srujana, Society of Arts & Social Service, Vijayawada on 01-12-2008.

The Department of Bio-Sciences of K.B.N College conducted a State Level Seminar on “RECENT ADVANCES IN AIDS

STUDIES” on the occasion of World AIDS day 1st Dec, 2008. 5 N.S.S volunteers participated in the seminar.

On the occasion of World AIDS Awareness Day on 1st Dec, 2008, S.R.R College conducted drawing and elocution competitions. Our N.S.S volunteers Sk. Nadiya, II B.Com/ B secured I prize of Rs. 500/- in drawing competition, Md. Ayusha Akthar, II B.Com/ B secured II prize of Rs. 300/- in Elocution competition.

On the occasion of ‘Bhavani Dheeksha Viramana- 2008’ at Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam, Vijayawada, 20 N.S.S volunteers rendered their services at various ghats and around the temple from 21-12-2008 to 24-12-2008.

In the Youth Festival Acharya Nagarjuna University N.S.S unit on 9-01-2009 for the N.S.S volunteers. Md. Ayusha Akthar, II B.Com/ B secured I prize in Elocution competition Sk. Nadiya, II B.Com/ B secured III prize in drawing competition & M.L. Prasanna, II B.Com secured III prize in Rangoli competitions.

SPECIAL CAMP: The N.S.S units I & II of our college conducted special camp at New Rajarajeswari Pet, Vijayawada from 4-01-2009 to 10-01-2009 in collaboration with Vasavya Mahila Mandali - 90 volunteers and N.S.S programme officers, Smt K. Sri Lakshmi & Smt K. Padmaja Devi participated in the camp.

Dr N.Vijaya Ratnam, N.S.S coordinator Acharya Nagarjuna University presided over the inaugural function on 4-01-2009.Sri.K.Siva Sankar, Project Director, N.C.L.P was the Chief Guest, Dr.P.Diksha, Dermatologist and Co-ordinator, Care and Support programme, Dr Karuna Murthy, Health Officer, Municipal corporation, Vijayawada, Sri Y. Ramana corporator 52 Division, Smt J. Vasantha Kumari, Principal S.D.M.S.M.Kalasala and Smt M. Nalini, Academic Officer, S.D.M.S.M.Kalasala, VJA participated in the inauguration. On that day our volunteers participated in Clean and Green Programme.

Nearly 1300 houses were surveyed focusing on the Child Labour and Dropouts in the New Rajrajeswari pet on 05-01-2009. Our volunteers identified some dropouts. Labour, dropouts and against AIDs. The rally went through the different blocks of new Rajarajeswari Pet distributing pamphlets on Child Labour and posters on AIDs

N.S.S units conducted a Guest Lecture on “Awareness on Hygiene”. Dr Karuna Murthy, Municipal Health Officer, Vijayawada explained about the personal hygiene. On the same day Dr K.N. Vara Lakshmi, HOD Applied Nutrition, S.D.M.S.M.Kalasala, VJA gave information about the nutritious food to the housewives and to our students on 6-01-2009.

Sri T. Sree Kumar, City president, Jana Vignana Vedica, Vijayawada gave detailed lecture about the Child Labour and necessary steps for the prevention of Child Labour. On the same day the members of Women Child department gave information about DWACRA- groups and how to get funds from various welfare departments on 07-01-2009.

Our staff and volunteers of S.D.M.S.Mahila Kalasala, VJA conducted Embroidery Classes for the housewives on 8-01-2009. They also conduct Rangoli competitions to local people our volunteers played Veedhinatakam about the precautions to be taken by pregnant ladies.

A Medical Camp was conducted on 9-01-2009 in the urban health Centre, New Rajarajeswari Pet and nearly 200 patients utilized the service. Our volunteers conducted door to door campaign explaining them how to maintain personal hygiene.

On the last day of the special camp i.,e Valedictory function was organized on 10-01-2009 the college campus. Dr N.Vidya Khanna, Jansikshan Sansthan, Vijayawada was the Chief Guest for the function and distributed prizes to the winners.

A Dental Camp was organized by N.S.S units – I & II with the co-operation of Siri Dental Hospital on 21-01-2009 & 22-01-2009. Nearly 1300 students utilized this facility.

I am extremely delighted to announce that 50 N.S.S volunteers participated in the Republic Day parade at Acharya Nagarjuna University. 8 volunteers presented a skit on “Superstitions” and bagged I prize on 26-01-2009.

39. Healthy practices of the institution:

1. Prayer:

Recognizing the noble ideals of Siddhartha, the college begins its activities on a spiritual note. The day begins with an invocation to Goddess Durga. All the students, teaching and non-teaching staff attend the assembly without fail. This practice is meant to create an atmosphere of solemnity and seriousness. Value based education is given top priority and everyday one lecturer gives message which

surely inculcates the values of ethics in the students. Punctuality and self-discipline are also cultivated through this practice. Sometimes students are also given opportunity to speak in the assembly. The Principal addresses the students occasionally after the prayer on general issues or to announce the achievements of the students in various competitions conducted in and outside the college. The assembly starts at 8.45 AM and ends at 9.00 AM.

2. FETE:

FETE in our college is organized in the month of December – a time for grand gala bazaars of variety items. This year the FETE was inaugurated by Dr. B. Rama Rao garu, President, Siddhartha Academy of General and Technical Education. In the FETE the students of all classes with one another to set a new record collection every year. This year breaking the previous records they collected Rs.1,04,544/-.

3. Adoption of Children from AIDS hit families:

In collaboration with Vasavya Mahila Mandali, a local voluntary service organization, 15 Lecturers of the college adopted 15 children from HIV/AIDS affected households. Each lecturer is contributing a minimum of Rs.900/- every year to meet the expenditure incurred on the purchase of school uniforms, bags and other stationery and the lecturers agree to continue the sponsorship until the children complete their school education. In addition to that, an amount of Rs.10000/- contributed by the staff is deposited in the bank and it will be utilized to provide higher education to them. This year also 15 members of the staff contributed Rs.900/- each to distribute school bags uniform and stationary to them.

4. Poor students’ Aid Fund:

The students and staff of the college generously contribute to the Poor Student Aid Fund which is transparently maintained and its proceeds every year go towards payment

of fees of economically backward students. The Poor Student Aid Fund committee appeals to the staff and students to contribute liberally on their special occasions. The fund raised through the yield of Banana Plantation and Jasmine garden developed on the college campus is also added to the Poor Student Aid Fund. This enables the students who would like to pursue their studies but are unable to do so due to financial constraints continue their studies without interruption.

5. Choice Based Credit System:

The launching of Certificate courses under the Choice Based Credit System is a marked innovation in the curricular activities. Besides languages, core subjects, courses of social relevance students will under go training in Part III & Part IV. A minimum of three credits should be earned for passing atleast one course under Part III from the list of Diversified Courses. Such courses are not included in the core subjects of the programme. A minimum of one credit should be earned by participating in the activities listed under Part IV i.e., Extra-curricular activities like NCC/NSS/Games and Sports/Cultural and Literary activities/ Home crafts, Yoga, Eco club, etc.

6. Certificate/Diversified courses under Part-III:

2 U.G.C Certificate courses and 17 Diversified courses were introduced under part-III. Science students are given to option to choose Diversified Courses in Arts subjects and Arts students can choose Science subjects.

7. Home Crafts, Fine Arts and Yoga under Part – IV:

Home Crafts & Fine Arts introduced under Part IV provide opportunity for employability and self-employment in future. Yoga ensures Physical Fitness and practical technique to realize one’s potential in every aspect of life. It also develops self-control, discipline & broad mindedness. It aims to kindle the divine consciousness within the seekers & helps them to turn the mind inwards.

8. IQAC:

Internal Quality Assurance Cell formulates strategies to ensure quality assurance and improvement. It arranges feed-

9. Seminars:

Academic activities like seminars, workshops and group discussions are organized. The creative abilities of the students and staff are nurtured by such activities conducted by each department.

The seminar hall is fully equipped with Audio Visual equipment to conduct regular seminars, guest lectures, workshops and recreational activities. After attaining the Autonomous status the college conducted seminars and workshops for the benefit of the staff and students.

11.Literary and Cultural Associations:

The Literary Association arranges a wide range of activities to encourage the students to develop their creativity and artistic skills. Every year, the Association conducts competitions in Elocution, Essay Writing, Quiz, Debate, Painting, Drawing and Cartooning.

Linking art, music, dance and dramatics to learning reaps social and personal benefits to students. Our students are amply provided with such opportunities and are encouraged to participate in cultural competitions to prove their talents. Every year, cultural week is organized to bring out the hidden talents of the students in Clay-Modeling, Singing, Dancing, Rangoli, Flower decoration, Salad decoration and Deepotsav etc.

The students proved their mettle by getting overall Championships in Intercollegiate Cultural and Literary competitions held at Acharya Nagarjuna University and Sarada Sahiti Kala Thoranam- A State level fest of Creativity oragnised by Sarada College, Vijayawada.

12.Dress Code:

The college introduced uniform to all the students on all the working days of the college except on Friday. Students

The Principal and the teaching staff wear handloom sarees one day in a week i.e; Monday to lend a helping hand to the handloom weavers by buying handloom sarees.

14.Srijanoostav:

Siddhartha Srijanoostav, a state level festival of creativity is conducted to bring out latent talents of the students all over the state in the spheres of Fine Arts, Culture, Personality Development and Communication Skills etc. The unique feature of this fest is that the total expenditure around Rs.2,00,000/- is borne by the management and no entry or registration fee is charged. The management takes up the responsibility for providing free board and lodge and valuable prizes. Every year, over 700 students (boys and girls) participate in this two-day cultural bonanza from all over the state. It is an ideal platform for bringing out the talents of the students and it was from this platform that some of the Film Personalities blossomed into what they are now.

Our college organized in collaboration with Manipal Super Specialty Hospital jointly organized a health and medical camp called ‘Arogymasthu’ on 20-11-2008.

In association with AGRI GOLD and LAWRENCE AND MAYO, the Science Association of our college has organized a free Medical Checkup and Free Eye Checkup on the eve of World Anti Obesity Day on 26th Nov, 2008. 100 students of our college have utilized these services.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES 2008- 09

The note worthy achievement this year is – the team secured first place in the Youth Festival organized by Acharya Nagarjuna University and represented Acharya Nagarjuna University in the South Zone Inter University Youth Festival held at Calicut University, Kerala. Their the team bagged I place in the Indian Group Song and II place in Folk Dance. So it was selected for National Inter University Youth Festival held at Vidyasagar University, Midnapur, West Bengal. At National Level the team secured II prize in the Folk Dance- Thappeta gullu and IV in Indian Group Song.

On the historic occasion of 8-8-2008, the Cultural Wing of S.D.M. Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala arranged a great entertainment programme for the students. In numerology Number 8 has its own importance. A majestic Indra sabha with Astha Dikpalakulu, Sri Krishna Devarayalu’s Bhuvana Vijaya Vaibhavam with Asta Diggajas, 8 dancers worhipping Asta Lakshmis for their blessings and Asta Nayikas presenting 8 different emotions of women and Buddha’s Astanga Marga- the 8 fold path for the attainment of Moksha, are displayed by 50 students.

NO MORE TEARS

Inauguration of the forum for social activities “No More Tears” was held on 27th Jan, 2009. Chief guests of the function are Sri Velamati Manohara Prasad (Retd. IAS), Secretary, Centre for development and research of primary schools & Smt V. Rama Devi, Social Worker. All the extension activities of the college come under this forum.

“NO MORE TEARS” is a social forum started in our college and under this all extension activities are done. It is mainly to inculcate social concern among our students. By participating in activities under this forum students will be exposed to the needs of socially and economically marginalized people. By serving them they find meaning to their lives, and grow into complete persons. This will create a platform to use their talents, time and energies to serve the needed and to be a part in bringing change in the quality of life.

Students enter into new horizons leaving selfishness and enter into a social contract. Students will find meanings to their lives and become role models for the future generation.

ECO-CLUB ACTIVITIES 2008-09

The college introduced Environment Education as a subject of the curriculum and made it compulsory and minimum One Credit is given to it. Degree will be awarded only after the completion

In addition to pit style and heap style composting NADEP style composting is started on the campus. This compost is utilized for the plants of the college garden.

On ‘The World Environmental Day’ staff and students decided to minimize the use of soft drinks that are consumed during official and non-official gatherings on the campus and to use fruit juice which is good for health.

The members of the Eco-Club picked and sold fresh henna in the college premises on the occasion of Ashadhamasam. The members of Eco-club explained the advantages of using natural henna to processed henna which consumes energy, water and plastic.

Medicinal plants were planted on the campus and their medicinal value was explained to the students.

22-07-2008:

Conducted an Intercollegiate Elocution Competition in “Eco Friendly Life –Means and Ways” & a Written Quiz Competition in “Environmental Pollution” for students of various colleges in Vijayawada. The highlight of the programme was plants were distributed as prizes to the winners of the above competitions.

A painting competition was held on the topic – ‘Pollution - Environment - Human health.’

Eco-Club organized a rally from college to Benz Circle to create awareness among the civilians of Vijayawada regarding pollution caused by crackers. They distributed pamphlets suggesting ways to celebrate Dewali without causing air and noise pollution.

A Competition in Eco-Friendly Greeting Card making was held on31-12-2008 by using Natural things like Dried Leaves, Flowers,Hay,Grains,Seeds,Nut shells,Cotton etc., They were Instructed to use Natural colours like Turmeric, Indigo,Coffee powder etc.,

A Rangoli Competition was conducted for teaching and Non teaching Staff. They were instructed to use ageold Eco-Friendly Materials like Rice Flour, Turmeric, Saffron etc.

The Eco-Club of our college was started in the year 2005, Acharya Nagarjuna University recognized their efforts for protecting the environment and the awareness they are creating among the people. As a result of their efforts the university adjudged our college twice as The Second Best Eco- Friendly College among all affiliated colleges of Acharya Nagarjuna University during the years 2007-08 and 2008-09 the college received an award and a cash prize of Rs.8,000/- in 2007-08 and Rs. 4000/- during 2008-09 from the Vice –Chancellors on the occasion of Foundation Day celebrations of the Acharya Nagarjuna University.

Future Aims:

To start Entrepreneur Development Cell to promote self- employment among the students and public.

The institution envisages the teaching, learning experience to be carried out with more emphasis on computer aided learning procedure

Involvement of staff in the preparation of textbooks and course materials.

To encourage all departments to carryout collaborative and service oriented activities.

To renovate and develop gymnasium on the campus with U.G.C. funds.

Strengthening of Certificate Courses. To provide more placement services to both Arts & Science

students. All the departments should enter into MOU. To introduce a course in Theatre Arts. Change of existing courses according to the growing need.
