CRITERION I – CURRICULAR ASPECTS
1.1 Curriculum Planning and Implementation
1.1.1 Institution has the mechanism for well-planned curriculum delivery and documentation. Explain
in 500 words
The Curriculum Activities Committee (CAC) plays a central role in the Sinhgad Dental College and
Hospital. The constant quest for excellence has necessitated the pivotal role of the curriculum
committee, to maintain high curriculum standards, and implement the college curriculum in an
organized, efficient manner. Regular meetings are conducted for smooth conduct of teaching schedule
and assessment of student feedback. Monitoring of exam and teaching schedule is done periodically.
Detailed academic calendar is prepared for each academic year. Planned detailed teaching schedule for
regular and referred batches is prepared. An Ad-Hoc Committee for scrutinization of students’
application for additional examinations for all BDS courses (regular and referred) is appointed every
year to prevent any subjectivity and bias. After deliberation on the subject the semester pattern has
been stopped and yearly pattern has been adopted which is made applicable for all students from the
academic year 2017-18. Numerous curricular and co-curricular activities are conducted in the college
every year for skill development with focus on employability and entrepreneurship.
The Curriculum Activity Committee assists in the development of the educational programs in
accordance with the philosophy, policies, and objectives of the college and Maharashtra University of
Health Sciences.

Yes

Yes
1.4.2 How the feedback obtained is being analysed and utilized for overall development of the
institution?
The institution has a mechanism in place for obtaining formal feedback from the students regarding the
lessons, level of understanding, method of teaching, process of learning, techniques of learning and
teaching etc. This helps in developing the critical thinking ability of the student and well as developing
the lateral thought process. The feedback obtained is analyzed by head of the department and senior
faculty of each department at the end of each academic year and useful suggestions are communicated
to the Principal. This helps in improving the teacher effectiveness as the teachers gain comprehensive
insight into how their students are learning and responding to teaching practices. The decisions are then
communicated to the affiliating University for appropriate action if required. The faculty members and
Principal provide feedback from time to time to MUHS regarding curriculum development. This helps
in updating the curriculum (if any) to meet the emerging trends and needs of students.
Modifications are also done in teaching and learning methodologies as per suggestions obtained from
students, such as conducting additional classes and training, betterment exams, tutorials etc. By letting
the students decide if they liked the method of teaching the lessons or by letting them offer suggestions,
their decision making ability is enhanced. This is vital as they grow into adults where important
decisions pertaining to life career etc have to be made which impacts positively on student outcomes.
Increased student voice and engagement are well known factors in improving student outcomes. The
feedback from head of institute is obtained by management in the form of annual appraisal report and
the same is obtained by the Principal from the head of departments. The HOD in turn obtains appraisal
report from teaching and non teaching staff.
Feedback from patients is obtained after treatment and means and ways undertaken for the smooth
functioning of the treatment procedures.
Similar feedback is obtained from parents, interns and alumni.

2.3.2 Students mentoring system available in the institution? Give details. (maximum 500 words)
Mentoring is a proven approach to drive rich learning and development for both mentees and
mentors. At Sinhgad Dental College and Hospital, student mentorship program is developed to improve
student retention, boost job placement rates, and increase alumni engagement when tapping alumni as
mentors. They are built through thoughtful planning and sustained commitment to guiding participants
through the mentoring process while continually improving the program.
Each Mentor group consisted of a Professor a reader and a lecturer. Each mentor group were allotted 5
students from each batch i.e 2009-2014, 2010 – 2015, 2011- 2016, 2012-2017 and 2009-2018. BDS
Students from both regular as well as referred batches were included in the program. Each student’s
attendance and performance in all the current subjects was periodically recorded by the mentors.
Mentor – Mentee meeting was conducted after regular intervals following each semester (if applicable),
first internal, second internal, prelims and university examination. Any problems other than academics
related were also addressed, if the student fails to improve his/her attendance or academic performance,
the mentor contacted the particular student’s parents. Counselling sessions involving parents were also
conducted in such extreme cases.
All the records related to each student were meticulously noted recorded for future references.

words)
Application of OSCE and DOPS as an assessment tool for recording WHO assessment form and Dental
Indices by third and final year BDS students in the Department of Public Health Dentistry.
While routine practical examinations, stress chiefly on the recall demonstrated by the student1, an
Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and Direct Observation of Procedural Skills
(DOPS) assessment tool can be designed to evaluate other domains such as critical thinking, problem
solving ability and communication skills which will facilitate holistic teaching learning experience
for the students and the teachers.
The assessment will be carried out using checklist specially devised for OSCE stations and DOPS for
formative assessment. The control group will be assessed using routine assessment methodology. The
feedback for the assessment method will be obtained from the examiners as well as the participants
from the control and the intervention group. Inter examiner reliability will be evaluated between all the
five examiners to check for the validity and reliability of these assessment tools. The OSCE assessment
was carried out by five examiners. The standardization and calibration of the examiners will be done
by the principal examiner from the Department of Public Health Dentistry, of the concerned dental
College and Hospital. The DOPS assessment will be carried out by five examiners after due calibration.
The same five examiners will be conducting the examination for the control group using routine
assessment method.
2.5.3 Academic calendar prepared and adhered for conduct of Examination and other related matters
(250 words)
Yes, academic calendar is prepared at the start of the year and is strictly adhered to. Examination
schedule is also prepared at tthe start of the academic year and dates are informed well in advance. The
institute conducts three internal assessment examinations and a final examination every year.
Additional and betterment examinations are also conducted on a case to case basis (on recommendation
of ad hoc comittee) for students who may have missed the internal examinations for genuine reasons.

words each):
Curriculum development:
The Curriculum Development process encompasses the design and development of integrated plans for
learning, the design of implementation of the plans, and of the evaluation of the plans, their implementation
and the outcomes of the learning experience. Proper development of curriculum is done by regular meetings
of staffs of varied departments which includes discussion of the curriculum according to MUHS guidelines
and according to the feedback of students. This is further analysed in the meetings of Curricular Activities
Committee (CAC)and finalized by the Principal of the Institution. This is communicated to the affiliating
university for further changes if needed.
Teaching and learning:
The institution has a curricular activities committee which formulates the academic calendar. The academic
calendar is being strictly adhered to for teaching and learning programmes.Regular classes, practical and
individualized teaching programmes are devised to facilitate learning. Monitoring and tutorials are provided
to students with special academic needs and care. The learning is made student centric by problem-based
learning, small group learning and short-term research projects. The institution also encourages learning by
use of e- learning resources. Utilization of innovations such as ICT teaching, reflective learning,
simulations are encouraged. Various adjunct committees like Committee for Continuing Professional and
Personal Development (CCPPD), Interdisciplinary Meeting Committee (IDMC), Health Sciences Education
Technology (HSET), Implant Advisory and Monitoring Committee (IAMC), Publication and Publicity
Committee (PPC) and Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) help in achieving greater heights for the staff
