. . . FROM THE DESK OF

FROM THE PRESIDENTv first year as President of the VAFA has certainly

DAbeen one that has kept me on my toes . Off the fieldthere have many political issues that have had to bedealt with which have been well covered in the media .On the field I have been pleased that the playing ofmatches has been, in the main, played in good spiritwith the standard of matches extremely high.

Phil Stevens wrote in this column last week of theneed to win and lose well and last weekend mostreports suggest some extraordinary acts of good sports-manship were witnessed .

With the playing part of the season closing today Iwould like to thank the Chairman of the ExecutiveRichard Evans and other members of the ExecutiveCommittee who have served the Association so well andin particular the "old campaigners" Noel Rundle . JohnDillon an d David Burnes who have been guiding lightswhen I have needed a second or third opinion .

To Phil Stevens . Sue Anderson, Brett Conne ll and

Angela Giles at VAFAAdministration I extendmy personal thanksfor their support . Eachhas the good of the ANDREWVAFA at heart and their LAIVGFORD-JONEsupport of the Execu- PRESIDENTtive and dedication tothe smooth running of the Association is greatly apIciated .

I wish the remaining teams in Grand Finals Iweekend all the very best . I congratulate B sectgrand finalists Marcellin and Old Ivanhoe on becomA section teams for 1999 . To Old Xaverians and ,Scotch it is a touch of deja vu and I hope that towathe end of the game the contest is as close as last yi

In closing I assure evervone that the Executivebe working tirelessly over the off-season to ensure tAmateur football in Victoria is as good if not better tlit has always been .

F ROM THE DESK OFll here we are again and as Eddie (of "Footy

UTShow" fame) would say "what a big year it hasbeen in Amateur football!!" There seems to have beenmore controversies than in past seasons and also somegreat highlights . To me, that we were able to give ourbetter players the recognition they deserve by fieldingthree representative teams was terrific, as is the factthat we are coming off a finals series that has beenkeenly contested and has given some clubs the oppor-tunity to see all their on and off field efforts rewarded bygaining promotion to a higher section .

I have once again felt enormous pride in carryingout my role as Chief Executive Officer and if the seasonhas been deemed a success it has only been because Ihave been fortunate enough to be the head of a teamdedicated to giving of their best in their individual areasof allocated responsibility .

To Sue Anderson and Bre tt Connell I thank themmost sincerely. For the last couple of years since therehas been no direct "second in charge" in the adminis-crative structure. Brett and Sue have assumed moreduties and have performed them in an outstandingmanner. Our "first face" to the public Angela Giles hascontinued to impress with her excellent phone mannerand in carrying out all the multitude of tasks that are

required by someonein her position .

I sincerely thankthe many other indi-viduals who makeextraordinary effortsto assist with thesmooth running ofAmateur football .

I thank AndrewLangford-Jones andRichard Evans fortheir ability to commu-nicate and assist me inthe day to day decisionmaking which musttake place . To DavidBurnes . Noel Rundle,

PHIL STEVENSCHIEF EXECU'I'IN

OFFICER

John Dillon and Bruce McTaggart, in particular, wthave leaned on heavily (and often) for advice I thEmost sincerely for always being there .

I hope that this weekend's matches provide ating climax to another great season .

Finally - Noel Rundle's best team (1979=appears on page 39 .

0 ne year after Old Scotch's heart-breaking 6 pointloss to Old Xaverians in the 1997 Grand Final ,

and the Cardinals have earned the right to haveanother tilt at A-section's triple reigning premier .

In a true indication of the club's persistence,Scotch overcame some damaging player losses overthe summer and a wretched start to the season tobeat a host of challengers for the only vacant spot onGrand Final day (Xavs having booked the other inApril) .

September would have been the furthest thingfrom Old Scotch coach Wayne Harmes' mind whenXavs caned them by 98 points earlier in the year -leaving the Cardinals reeling with a 1-3 record - butthey capped off a fantastic resurrection with a doggedpreliminary final win against St . Bernards in the rainlast Sunday at Elsternwick Park .

REVIEWScotch were able to adapt to the greasy condi-

tions a lot quicker and more effectively than theirhighly-fancied opponents, and from the first bounceseemed more capable of kicking a winning score .

The Cardinals blended dour defensive work withsome penetrating attack in the first term to help setup the club's second successive grand final appear-ance . Matt O'Brien and Tim Holt worked tirelessly atground level in their defensive zones, while GavinEagle continued his fantastic negating work of latewith a good job on Nick Mitchell .

Some might query whether the Cardinals' goalslast week perhaps contained more ass than class, butthe fact of the matter is that most of their key for-wards saw enough of the ball to give them a chancewhen the team went forward - play the percentages, and luck might just follow along too !

The Bernies were resolute, resilient and (theywould argue) robbed. Two key players received three-match penalties on controversial tripping chargewhich denied Garry Foulds his most potent combina-tion - I won't speculate on whether the inclusion ofanother two big men would have helped St . Bernards'cause in such terrible conditions - fans can argue itout among themselves .

Suffice to say that the disappointed Bernies willbe back next year - Luke Vassallo led the A-sectiongoalkicking at season's end . and Luke Gollant wasawarded the highly-coveted Woodrow Medal for the A_section best and fairest on Monday night .Congratulations to Luke and the Bernies on a greatyear .

PREVIEWStrong though Scotch may be, in Xaverians they

confront a superpower . The VAFA's leading club has

shared just five lossesbetween its senior, reserves and Under19 teams, while itsClub XVIII wen tthrough undefeated . The only blemish in an ible years was their second Under 19 side, whished with a 6-11 record, but you get the pic t

Tim O'Shaughnessy is looking to become tlcoach, alongside Barry Richardson and Nick Ito help the club to a quartet of premiership culmany years.

In that time their skipper . the indoiCaptain (Michael) Blood, has twice won thNelson Medal for best on ground in the grar(1995 and 1997) and last year won the pre:Woodrow Medal for the A Section Best andplayer.

It's said that a champion team will alway team of champions; well Xavs are a team of c

Scotch may just have the defensive versamatch it with Xavs' potent forward line . Rohzhas hardly put a foot wrong all year while Gavi- who deserved Mark of the Year ahead of himate Aiden Boyd - is also playing tight, te .football in the key defensive post .

Even up forward, Wayne Harmes might juenough scoring options to convince his Cardinthey can kick a winning score. Heath, Duthieand Phillips have all been contributing to ifscore in recent weeks, while Aiden Boyd is a pmatch-winner capable of kicking a bagful . In Ionly area of concern for Scotch may be their nTom Wilson - always gallant in the ruck

for making 1998 such a great year. A big apanyone silly enough to use this column as aguide - just for the record . I think Xavs will wfortably today by I 1 goals (if it's dry) . Lastly . ~"good luck" to today's combatants - may tteam win .

0 Id Ivanhoe will meet Marcellin in the B Sectio nGrand Final after defeating Old Trinity in an

intense and physical Preliminary Final .Old Trinity started with the aid of a strong breeze

in the first quarter but Old Ivanhoe were able to frus-trate Old Trinity's attacking moves with close checkingthrough the midfield and Kent playing as a loose manin the backline rebounding the ball out of defence .

Old Ivanhoe scored first with Shadbolt pouncing ona loose ball in the goal square and the signs were look-ing good for Old Ivanhoe .

However . as the quarter wore on the Old Trinitymidfielders began to find space and Old Trinity kickedthe last three goals late in the quarter to grab a twogoal lead at quarter time .

Old Trinity really started to look as though theywere getting on top in the second quarter with goalscoming from a classy Stickland snap followed by a sim-ilar effort from Pawsey which saw them go to a 27 pointlead .

But Old Ivanhoe as they had done the week beforeagainst Marcellin, regrouped and worked their wayback into the contest by kicking the next three goals .

But again Old Trinity were able to score a vital goaldeep into time on when Stickland marked and goaledto restore their lead to two goals .

By half time it appeared that Old Trinity was slight-ly on top. with Stickland firing up fonvard, Allibon,Stephens and Pawsey gathering possessions in themidfield and Balazsy mopping up across the backlinethey appeared to have the edge in the contest but OldIvanhoe were still touch on the scoreboard and hadbeen able to answer all the challenges Old Trinity hadthrown at them .

The third quarter saw Old Ivanhoe make the deci-sive move of the game . Shadbolt was a nightmare forthe Old Trinity backline with his deceptive pace andaccurate kicking and Jarred Weddle and Hope contin-ued to present themselves as marking options in theforward line and Russian chipped in with a valuablegoal . Donaldson began to pick up kicks around theground and the backline led by Kent and Mansfieldwere able to restrict the Old Trinity to just four behindsfor the quarter. While at three quarter time the marginwas only 17 points the momentum appeared to haveswung Old Ivanhoe's way .

Old Ivanhoe managed two goals in the last quarterincluding a delightful running goal from Lochran thatappeared to settle the contest .

Although OldTrinity continued t opersist and made _some progress on thescoreboard, with Ramsden back in the ruck afterspending large part of the game in the forward line andon the bench and Allibon driving the ball forward outof the centre . However as hard as Old Trinity tried hardto overcome the deficit they struggled to penetrate theOld Ivanhoe backline . Jarrod Weddle and Kent bothprovided leadership and poise in the dying minutes ofthe game taking important defensive marks to hold outOld Trinitv.

MARCELLIN V. OLD IVANHOE, GRAND FINAL,ELSTERNWICK PAR K

The finale of the season looks almost impossible tocall . Marcellin have been on track for finals action allyear and Old Ivanhoe burst into contention with a ninegame winning streak during the second half of the sea-son .

A factor in the game could be Old Ivanhoe's moredifficult passage to the Grand Final. They have had twotough games against Marcellin and Old Trinity . In con-trast Marcellin at this stage of the season will haveenjoyed the benefit's of a week's rest . However you doget the feeling that Old Ivanhoe after coming back fromalmost five goals down last week are going to take somestopping.

They have a number of options in the ruck and inthe key positions, which they used to good effectagainst Old Trinity with either Weddle and Hope takingtheir turn in the ruck .

Marcellin have an excellent ruckman in Bovsenwho played a significant role in their semi final winover Old Ivanhoe but have lost Theisz to injury whichleaves Boysen to carry ruck duties against OldIvanhoe's tag team method .

Much of Marcellin's success this year has comefrom the drive generated by their talented midfield divi-sion consisting of competition Best and Fairest winnerDinneen, Waters and Cox .

Old Ivanhoe have a combative and close checkingmidfield combination featuring Hares, Jenkins andDonaldson .

Marcellin's goalscoring power comes fromTreganowan . one of the competition's leading goalkick-ers and Purcell provides another leading option .

In contrast Old Ivanhoe use a more unconvention-al set-up by rotating Hope and J . Weddle through cen-

I

tre half forward and using Shadbolt as a leading fullforward .

Both sides have strong backlines and looking backat the semi final plus the efforts of the Old Ivanhoebackline against Old Trinity this suggests that goalswill be a precious commodity on Grand Final day .

The result? It is a toss up between Marcellin'sslight edge in class in its running players versus OldIvanhoe's strengths in the ruck and in the key posi-tions .

C SECTIO Nby Russell Gould

N other season of 'C' section has wound its waydown to a close, and its final turn was one few of

us expected . To all teams who fought out the seaso nwell done for the games you won, not so well done onthe games you lost, but we expect you to come backnext year to give us another ride .

Congratulations to Hampton Rovers and St . BedesMentone Tigers, winners of the seniors and reservespremierships . For the Tigers it was back to back flags, for the Rovers it was a cellar to roof climb .

Review - Grand Final.

It was one of the best games of the year, if not thebest, and the result was the best evidence of that . It wasHampton Rovers who defied all the pundits to outlastBeaumaris and take the game by just 5 points .

Kicking into a stiff breeze in the first term, theRovers started the better and managed the first goal .The Rovers tough and aggressive approach was nothelping them with the umpires, but it did manage tohold the Sharks to just two goals for the term, and thedifference was eight points at the first change .

The Rovers continued to be hard at the ball in thesecond term, and now kicking with the breeze, theycontrolled proceedings and booted 6 goals to the Sharkstwo. Browne and Parkinson were dominating in the air,and at the long break, the Rovers found themselves upby 17 points.

As strange a position as it may have seemed tomany, it was not to the Rovers, and they remained set-tled in the third term. But as expected the Sharks cameout a bit better . Their workrate picked up significantly, and they kicked two quick goals early to make things abit closer. The rest of the quarter became a battle of thedefences, the Sharks attacking a lot more, but theRovers managed to hold them out. and went in to thefinal term up by two points .

The Rovers wrestled back control early in the finalterm, and stretched the lead out to 15 points by the 12minute mark . But Beauy were not done, and theyfought back to level the scores as the game hit time onin the last term . The extra time rules started to be dis-cussed, but the Rovers weren't having a bar of that . A

quick long kick in totheir forward lineresulted in a mark, and then a slick hand-ball resulted in a goal for them. The Sharks had onefinal forav forward but time beat them, and ten minuteslater, the Rovers song was heard long and loud, and themedallions were firmly around their necks .

Well done Rovers .

Reserves Grand Final.

In stark contrast to last year, the St. BedesMentone Tigers came in to the game red hot favoritesafter their nine goal defeat of Old Geelong two weeksearlier. But with a stiff breeze blowing to one end of theground, this game was not going to be one sided. TheOggers had first use of it, and gave the Tigers a goodscare. Their long kicks and good running had them 3goals up before the Tigers had scored . The Tigers got agoal though, and then another into the breeze, and weredown by 2 goals at the first change .

In the second term things were even early, but theTigers turned it on. Owen Lalor kicked three of theTigers six for the quarter, and they were stamping theirclass on the game . The Oggers managed a goal justbefore the bell, but still found themselves 3 goals downat the break .

The third term was the lowest scoring of the game .The Oggers weren't capitalizing on the breeze, theTigers defence solid under pressure, and the ball spenta lot of time away from the scoring areas . But the Tigerswere still holding sway, and they held that three goallead going in to the last term.

The Oggers were not giving in, and they kicked thefirst goal of the term to bring the margin back to justtwo goals . and give themselves a little sniff. But theTigers unit responded accordingly, and a succession ofgoals broke the Oggers, who very quickly found them-selves 5 goals down, with little hope of changing theresult.

In the end it was a solid 30 point win the Tigers, who made it back to back flags.

Well done Tigers .

Congratulations to the Whitefriar's Old Collegians

Football Club on being crowned Champions an d

Premiers for season 1998 . Worthy runners-up were

the Southbank Football Club .Whilst the taste of defeat was initially bitter, it was,

some 24 hours later compensated by the realisation ofthe level of success that had been achieved through-out the year i.e ., promotion .

To the Ajax Football Club, the consolation of tak-ing out the reserves premiership flag, something wesuppose that would have been graciously declined forsenior promotion and a shot at the big one .

As both Tom and I depart 'D' Section, we wish toconvey to all clubs who make up the competition nextyear all the very best of fortune, and trust that thesummer months prove fruitful in both on and off field

recruitment .Thanks to all the players, members, supporters

and officials of all the clubs this season for their com-mitment and dedication to making it a memorable

year.I'm sure, that on behalf of all 'D' section personnel,

we can extend our congratulation to Cam Houston ofWhitefriars on winning this years Best and Fairest

award . The'General' won it with 22 votes just shadingCam Colliver of Aquinas and Andre Pitts ofSouthbank .

Review - Grand Final (September 12)

Reserves - Whitefriars V Aja xThe 'Jackas' jumped out of the gates like whippets

and for most of the game the 'Friars' never got a sightof them again . With a few handy men back in the

team. Ajax looked a lot more settled than the previousweek and had a really good system and look aboutthemselves . Whitefriars on the other hand appearedtentative and by the time they got warm they wereunfortunately in the position of having to play catchup football .

Whitefriars gave themselves a chance in the 2ndqtr but the 'Jackas' always had the answers . This sce-nario continued right throughout the remainder of the

days game . In the end it was a disappointing end toWhitefriars season, however try telling that to the Ajax

lads. The'Jackas' celebrated their 39 pt win as if therewas no tomorrow and good luck to them. They had, along with the 'Friars' been the dominant team of thecompetition and proved worthy winners .

Seniors - Whitefriars V Southban k

The game itself never reached 'dizzy heights . Itwas a dour struggle dominated by defences of bothteams and packed with unforced errors . The fluctuat-ing weather conditions didn't help matters, along withthe nerves . hype and tension .

The 'Friars' kicked to the southern end in the 1st,aided by a 2- 3 goal breeze and Southbank did well tocontain them for the best part of the first 15 minutes .

The 'Bankers' in fact had their chances to dentWhitefriars but just couldn't convert well enough .

Once the Whitefriars machine got going . they quickly

put the runs on the board and looked the goods . Again

the 'Bankers' rallied and fought out the qtr in goodspirit by snagging the last goal to end the period only2 majors down .

This lead was quickly whittled down, but theWhitefriars team steadied, and for a greater portion o1the qtr appeared to be in control. For the second time

in the match to date. Southbank again raised anotheisupreme effort and with system in their game ancplayers prepared to take chances, they went on a scoring spree and very much against the flow, took in a Ipt lead at half time.

The 3rd qtr really told the story of the differenc+between a lead in each of 3 finals games against I . Fothe initial 12 minutes, Southbank pretty well heliWhitefriars, however once the 'Friars' broke the shackles that was it. Southbank were this time unable traise the effort needed to stay in realistic touch . Hai

it not been for inaccuracy, Whitefriars would havtaken in a much greater lead than the 25 pts they hel

at orange time .In the final qtr . both teams threw everything the

had left into the contest and the fitter legs cWhitefriars really came to the fore . A 32 pt victory wewell deserved by a team and more importantly asclub, who for the greater part of the year led the conpetition and without doubt were the benchmark of it

section . Southbank could be very proud of theefforts.

MVP's for the 'Friars' were Pawlick. Carbone ar

Houston. whilst for Southbank, Morgan, Goodlet arMcNamara were gallant triers .

COACHES' CLIAFCA/VAFA

HOW TO WIN A VAFA PMAHMtiGHIPDR. COLIN P. DAVEY

2 or a team to win a premiership the coach needsto look at three areas (i) skill or talent, (ii) physi-

cal fitness and (iii) the correct psychological or men-tal approach .

Unfortunately the skill and fitness aspects arenot sufficient to ensure success, as when it comes toGrand Finals, the two teams are almost identicallyequal in these two areas . The third area, the psy-chological, becomes the dominating factor thatdecides whether a team fulfils its potential in termsof skill and fitness. Anyone doubting this has only torecall last years grand final scores at half time andfull time, or even the 1998 women's Wimbeldonfinal .

What happens to players during the finalsseries?

Unfortunately, with all the pressures generatedby the press, radio, television and even the generalpublic at large, parents, girlfriends and work mates, the normal human emotion of anxiety takes over, and there is no question that this interferes withperformance. Anxiety manifests itself in many waysin the body, and there is not a person alive who atsome stage in their life has not felt sweaty palms, adrv throat, butterflies in the stomach, an urge to goto the toilet, or similar anxiety symptoms . Howeverperhaps the worst feature is a tension in the mus-cles which interferes with one's co-ordinationwhether it be kicking, handball, marking or evenrunning.

Footballers, the majority of whom are by person-ality anxious extroverts, are more prone to anxietythan many other individual athletes, and a wisecoach enlists the assistance of a sports psychologistto help mentally prepare his team for the final series, particularly the grand final .

What then must the sports psychologist do?Having been trained in the sports sciences as

well as psychology, he should first check that thereare no problems in the player's skills or their physi-ological fitness. As most clubs have specialist skillscoaches and physical education graduates to assistthem, as well as sports medicine doctors, the teamsthat make the finals usually have these areas wellcovered .

Just as the skills and fitness areas have taken 9-10 months to reach their peak so the sports psy-chologist must work with the players for manymonths in order to perfect their mental skills .

By means of questionnaires and interviews hecan assess their confidence, attention, concentra-tion and most importantly their anxiety levels. Veryfew footballers have been found to be low anxiouspersonalities although very experienced finals foot-ballers learn how to cope and lessen their anxiety.

The Barassis, Bartletts and Tucks of this world, have learnt how to cope with their anxiety havingplayed in many finals series and grand finals . Butcompare this with a young 18 year old playing in hisfirst finals series!

The majority of players must learn how to reducetheir anxiety particularly if they are playing in theirfirst grand final.

Since relaxation is at the opposite end of the con-tinuum from anxiety, all athletes must learn a pro-gressive relaxation procedure . Simply, this is tens-ing and then relaxing all groups of muscles begin-ning with the toes, lower leg, upper thigh and work-ing up through the body, tail, tummy, shoulders, fingers, arms, and finally the head, mouth, foreheadand eyes . The tensing should be for about six sec-onds, then relaxing, to be followed by a second tens-ing of the same set of muscles and then relaxing.

Ideally the relaxation should take place in a quietsetting, sitting or lying comfortably with loose cloth-ing, and maintaining a positive attitude . A goodplace to practice relaxation is last thing at night, inbed with the light out . Surprisingly, relaxation is askill, which must be practiced and learnt, just like abanana kick for goal from the point post .

When the skill of relaxation has been learnt suf-ficiently well, it is possible for the footballer to beginimaging himself on the football field . and playing thebest game he is capable of. If he is a full forward he'sees' himself leading for the ball . marking it, andthen lining up the ball and kicking the goal . If he isa back man he may see himself spoiling a particularforward or marking over him, or a ruckman canexperience the thrill of soaring over his rover . Thisform of mentally rehearsing his skills can give th e

young player's brain the experience of perfecting hisskills . Or, he may even replay in his mind the verybest game of football he has ever played .

If having played at Elsternwick Park before, thefootballer should go over in his mind, arriving at theground getting changed, warming up, running outon the ground, and mentally rehearsing some of theskills he perfected . It is not commonly known thebrain cannot tell the difference between a real or animagined experience, so this is a method by whichthe young player can match the veteran finals play-er.

It is not uncommon for athletes or footballers topractice this relaxation and imagery procedure anhour or more before commencing their match, but afurther relaxation procedure is also necessary . Onecountry's Olympic Games boxing coach used arelaxation procedure on his boxers to lessen theiranxiety. but they were all knocked out in the firstround . The reason was that the relaxation proce-dure (as well as lessening anxiety) decreased heartrate, blood pressure . breathing rate and lowered thebody's metabolism . To perform at your optimal levelphysically, you need to increase heart rate, breath-ing rate and increase the blood flow to the workin g

( muscles . Therefore after a relaxation procedure it isnecessary to have 10-15 minutes of vigorous physi-cal activity so that the player reaches his optimallevel of arousal before commencing play.

In summary, the procedure before play is relax-ation in order to lessen anxiety, imagery of the skillsyou need to perform, followed by vigorous physicalexertion in order to reach your optimal arousal level .This has often been termed "instant pre-play", theopposite of the more commonly used term . "instantreplay" .

Those mental skills, like physical skills, must bepracticed regularly if they are to be perfected . At arecent Olympic Games an athlete who won 3 goldmedals had been using the above mental prepara-tion techniques for five years .

So, who will win the premiership this yearbetween Old Xaverians and Old Scotch, or Marcellinand Old Ivanhoe? At this stage of the season there isno perceptible difference in the skills and fitness ofeither team, so my pick for the premiership will bethe team that has been best prepared mentally forthat one great day in September.

Review

Section 1Old Xave rians jumped De La Salle in the first

quarter with Rathgeber and the showman Curnowprominent and from then on the D's played catch upfootball - to put it simply. A handy half time lead of 7goals sounded a clear warning that the Xavs were onsong, and although outscored in the second half 6goals to 4 the damage had been done. Skidmore andCoughlan as expected were dominant in their mid-field roles, while Storey down back and O'Connell inthe ruck were proving handfuls for their De La Salleopponents. Better D's on the day were 0' Donnell,Bonnici and Pedicini through the midfield, withBailey and Aron battled hard in defence . Overall theXavs are to be congratulated for going through theseason as the best team, they deservedly won the pre-miership. To the D's commiserations, a terrific secondhalf of the year saw them make the big one, but werebeaten by the better team on the day .Alex Johnson Medallist: P. Rathgeber (OldXaverians)

Section 2Old Scotch's sensational form continued last

weekend much to the chagrin of Whitefriars whowere unable to stop the onslaught that occurred inthe first quarter . (14) scoring shots to (5) tells thestory with a deficit of some (8) goals at quarter timeand (12) at the half the game was all but over for theFrairs . Thomas again contributed heavily on thescoreboard with 6 majors . while Junkeer . Patersonand Sladen (3) continued an impressive season allround . Northey, Winch and Power were valiant indefeat although it was too little too late as far as theFriars were concerned. Old Scotch finishing full ofrunning with Stevens prominent . while Dougherty.O'Meara and Murray also worthy of mention for theFriars who battled hard but were outclassed on theday. Old Scotch going one better than last year, whilethe Friars will seek solace in the fact that theirseniors were victorious and move to C Section withhopes of further finals successes to com eJohn Miles Medallist: G. Junkeer

Section ( 2) BlueIn the closest match of the weekend in the (4) U 19

sections a gallan t Hampton Rovers could not staywith a polished, well drilled running MHSOB, whoran out premiers for 1998 . The game began evenlywith neither team giving much quarter, the H . TaylorDuddy ruck contest was proving crucial, while theAsh O'Brien Anderson battle was at evens at the firstbreak. Jenkin was being well held and withHumphries struggling to break loose the Rovers werebreaking down across half forward, where the run ofRodder and the fine work of Askew and McCully wasproving decisive . Although ahead at the half the Highwere not assured of victory as the fighting Roverscame out firing in the third. Adams began to showglimpses while Captain Quon lifted, and with Rehnand Prantzos also battling hard good signs were therefor the Rovers. However Moore, Hill and Joseph werekeeping the High in command with slick foot skillsand smart use of the football. Not even a final quar-ter (10) shots to (2) could assist the Rovers as they potshotted the goals to no avail . When Moore slippedthrough a clever goal late to seal the match theRovers lion-hearted push came to a close . A greatgame to watch, a credit to both coaches and clubs .John Simpson Medallist : Heath TaylorSection (2) Red

A monster beginning by Yarra Valley had OldIvanhoe on the back foot from the first bounce andwhen they bounced out to almost (6) goals in the leadby half time the Valley looked home and hosed .Middlin was proving dangerous up forward while atthe other end Willis found it difficult to get into thegame. Valoppi was firing and along with Vaughan andFraser were providing the drive and direction withwhich the other Valley players followed . However inthe third term OIG were not to be denied, andthrough the fine play of Dowd . Brandt and Davis hitback to get within striking distance of the Valley. However in a dour struggle in the last Cremean andKruse were cool in crisis, and despite the best effortsof Gibson, Harper and Keane DIG could not dent thedeficit much at all . Yarra Valley taking out their firstever U 19 VAFA premiership.Max Lyon Medallist: P. Valopp i

Water is really the best for replacing fluid lost with footy. Sports drinks are also goodsources of fluid, salt and energy.

Remember on a hot day a running player can lose 4kgs of weight, that is the same as4 litres of water. This would lead to severe dehydration .

At McKinnon Sports Medicine our dieticians including Karen Inge who is Head ofSports Nutrition at the VIS always remind us that thirst is a very late indicator of the bod-ies need for fluid . That means drink first and foremost . Build up your fluid reserves for 48hours before a game and try to drink about 500 m1s per quarter .

That will leave you with that winning feeling .

ELST~ ~ j'1.".'1C PARK GATESThe main gate (Glenhuntly Rd) is open every match day.
