A SECTIONby Jason Frenke l

; ast Saturday's autumn sun went to work early ,drying up the morning dew and leaving perfect

conditions to kick off the first round . Make no mis-take about it: last Saturday was a great day forfootball (at least for five teams in A Grade! )

And some great football was produced on theday. Old Xaverians, Old Melburnians andCollegians all opened up 1997 with impressivevictories, while the two new teams Old T rinity andOld Parade, both performed well but failed to takethe points in the final analysis . For UniversityBlues, De La Salle and St Bernards, it seems itwill take more than a little sunshine to turn theirfortunes around . All three clubs started the seasonsuffering resounding defeats; all three need to getback on track in the next week or two, or risk los-ing touch with the competition .OLD XAVERIANS V ST. BERNARDS

The Premiership flag hardly had time to revealitself in the unfurling last week at Toorak Parkbefore Xavs had set about chasing the next one -the team's intentions were laid bare for all in ascintillating opening quarter during which thePremiers piled on 10 .2 to 0.0 .

Winners all over the ground for Xavs . Big DanRichardson booted eight, while Andrew Jonesand Bourke added eleven between them; DavidLandrigan and on-baller Simon Wood wereamong the best .

Little to cheer about for Garry Foulds' firstencounter as coach of Bernards . Jason Gollantwas their only multiple goal-scorer with 2 - at halftime the side had posted just 1 .1 on the board .Tim Dobson and Ben Chatfield were among theirbetter players as was Jason Gollant, but Bernardswill need more than that if they are to climb off thebottom .

OLD SCOTCH V OLD TRINITYBernie Dunn would be neither pleased nor dis-

appointed with his charges' five goal loss atCamberwell to Old Scotch; Trinity showed enoughlast week to suggest that while 1997 might notbring the stunning success of last year, theyshould be competitive against good sides in A-Section . Simon Dalrymple proved his worth yetwhile Damien Glass also performed well . Hatfieldand Taylor were also among the better players, booting five goals between them .

Wayne Harmes opened up his 1997 accountwith positive signs from the Cardinals' 5 goal vic-tory. Defender Stuart Grigg led the way while

2

newcomers Kalinskiand Goldberg alsoadded bite to theireffort . Scotch onlyoutscored their opponents in the second and thinquarters, by 11 goals to 6, and it seems that quality forwards who were able to convert proved to b ,the difference on the day. Rohan Aujurd rarel, plays a poor game - he booted five goals, as di<Kalinski .

OLD MELBURNIANS V DE LA SALLEA tight struggle up to half-time . De La wen

into the main break with a slender 2 point lea(and the chance of an upset in the making . But OkMelburnians settled into a rhythm after the brealand ran away this game in the second half bootl14 .8 to just 2 straight goals . After lacking firepow-er for much of last year in the forward line, 11 sep-arate players booted majors for them last week - avariety of goalkickers means they should not findit hard this year to post a winning score. LochieBunn and Cameron Eabry were among the best .

The outlook is less bright for De La Salle - theycan take heart from a solid first half but looked allat sea as the Redlegs piled on the goals in the sec-ond . Drew Jackson, Andy Evans and PhilBrasher all made their mark for De La, whileO'Callaghan was their only effective forward withfour goals .

COLLEGIANS V UNI BLUES

A lack-lustre affair at Elsternwick Park -Collegians plugged along without really movinginto top gear against the students, who seemed tolack fire and heart . Leigh Carlson would be heart-ened by the outcome - his charges really only hittheir straps in portions of the second and finalquarters, yet they disposed comfortably of theBlues with ease . Century goal-kicker Drew Warne-Smith booted four goals, as did King, and theLions' forward line seems to have been strength-ened with these additions - they had plenty of talloptions up front last week .

Mark Tyquin will be scratching his head afterseeing the Blues capitulate - for much of last weekthey ran around with as much life as flat lemon-ade . Adam Lennen and Justin Stariski headedthe effort in front of goal with four apiece but therewas little else to cheer about . Garnaut andVandenberg played well, but the Blues will need tolife a notch, substantially.

great start to the season for some clubs . Forothers, a week to forget the final scores and

reflect on the performances of new recruits andyoungsters making their debuts at the higher level .Some were found short of a gallop whilst othersmay need a week or two in the "McGoos" to con-sider what is required in the senior ranks .Ormond and Mazenod served notice of theirintentions to be the pacesetters in B Section whilstOld B righton, Old Ivanhoe and St . Kevinsenjoyed their first encounters but will not want tobe complacent in the coming weeks as they striveto establish themselves at the top level of the lad-der in the early part of the season .

At E .E. Gunn Reserve, Ormond did not starttoo well and allowed MHSOB an early lead beforeMark HorsDeld centre, Brett Connell and theTurners up forward, took over. MHSOB backs inComer, Young and Dixon gave great service underintense pressure. Ormond will be particularlypleased with its second half performance whilstMHSOB will have learned much in terms of con-centrating for the full four quarters of football .

Mazenod had a focal point in Chris Harrisonup forward and after quarter time took chargeagainst the Sainters . Big efforts by the Nodders inthe last five minutes of the third quarter and thefinal ten minutes of the match were very reward-ing. The Saints were not too unhappy with theirperformance and believe they are shortly to salutethe judge when its new personnel combine effec-tively. Nodders best were Mick O'Hara (ruck),Dean Schofield and Ga ry Young. Rick Gilmore(back from overseas), Mark Agostino and ever-green Mark Tkocz were best in an even perfor-mance by the Saints .

SKOBS got away to a flying start againstTherry Penola with the game well and truly overby half time . "Bouncing" Ben Do ll man at halfback, Sam Gribble and youngsters Chris Bossongand "Flash" Gargano were most serviceable . LaFontaine, B. and S . Hallow and Crockford fea-tured in a Therry side that was most disappoint-ing. I expect the boys at Therry had a day that willnot be repeated for some time . Pride and the deter-mination to carry on from last year's efforts willsee a most competitive Therry over the next fewweeks .

After a slow start, Old Brighton overwhelmedBanyule in a one-sided affair . With half back MattDennis and wingers Matt Reid and Kim Farrel

feeding a tall mark-ing forward line, theTonners buriedBanyule with a 1 2goal second quarter. Anderson, Gray and D. ;C . Williams served Banyule well, however oilplayer's will need to stand up in the coming weto ensure better results .

Despite a poor first half Old Ivanhoe pegback Ivanhoe to record a convincing vict(Williams in the forward line was on fire earl}give Ivanhoe the ascendancy however Kent zTully, along with Haros and Donaldson arotmidfield, turned the game around after half

t Three goals only in the second half by Ivan ]must be of enormous concern for selectors hower there were many positives as well to give mthope for the season ahead .

My selections

The Saints take on the confident Old Ivanbat headquarters. Form suggest the OIG's shoiprevail by a big margin but the Sainters will h,a "red hot go" . I'll go for Old Ivanhoe by 27 poi n

At Melbourne High School the clash wMazenod will be a highlight of the round . MHS(at home are a tough encounter and after 1<week's wound should prevail by 19 points .

Therry Penola will have had a huge weekpreparation for a clash that will be most importaafter last week's stock. Ormond on the other ha~:have every reason to approach this encount, expecting the 4 points . Ormond to prevail bypoints .

Old Brighton will be on a high after the tfirst up win . This match up with the SKOBs wdraw a huge crowd. SKOBs won by a country m ;last week but should be well and truly prepared fthis encounter. Old Brighton's home advanta;should win on the day by 19 points .

Ivanhoe at home is always a tough propositicfor visitors . Banyule may take a few weeks to 1competitive with the top side . Ivanhoe should prvail by 38 points .

goal plus victories to both of them, Marcellin and St .Bedes Mentone look to have the goods, as do NorthOld Boys who also started off with a big win .

So to the first game of the round, and what endedup as the most disappointing. It was a local derby atBulleen where Marcellin took on newcomersBulleen-Templestowe, and in warm conditions, thehome side thumped the visitors by 135 points .Marcellin led by 35 points at the first change beforethe Bullants rallied early in the second to reduce thelead. However the Eagles then raised a gear and werenever headed . Andrew Treganowan went aboutamassing his ten goals at full forward and was helpedout on the ground by Caffry and Fri sina. The secondhalf then became a rout. The Eagles held the Bullantsto just one goal, thanks primarily to DamianDodori cio . One positive to come out of an otherwisedismal day was the performance of Matt Agrotis inthe ruck who was their only real winner . I tipped aclose one, and am sure I am not the only one who gotit wrong and we all hope the Bullants can only getbetter.

Thomastown travelled to Albert Park to take on aseverely undermanned AJAX unit . The Jackers haveonly nine of last years finals team at their disposaland so looked the likely loser. But no one told AJAXthat . Their runners helped them out to a 22 pointlead early in the second quarter, before their inexpe-rience came through . The Bears settled down andpiled on six goals before half time . AJAX fought backto lead by 6 points late in the last quarter, only to seethe fitter Bears run over the top of them and run out24 point victors in a close game of footy . For the BearsTony Fellows was a standout, managing the roles ofboth captain and coach with admirable results andCapeci was also good with four goals . For AJAX, skip-per Marty Halphen was best and youngster BradDavis showed some promising form with five goals .For AJAX, their lack of depth though could prove tobe a real problem .

In the local derby at Mentone, a taller and morepolished St Bedes Mentone Tigers were 95 point vic-tors over a worrying Old Mentonians . The Tigersheight proved to be a real problem for the Panthers,in particular up forward . They managed to rotatethree and four big guys up forward who managed tokick goals . The Panthers managed to hang in there inthe first quarter after the Tigers kicked five goals in asmany minutes, and were only 11 points down at thefirst change. But 18 goals to five after that told thesad story for the Panthers . For the Tigers TonyMacGeorge was very good and 'Moose' McGrawplayed a'special' game . The Panthers big guns up for-

6

ward, Stroud andAcreman were com-pletely dominated bytheir respective oppo-nents, and they lacked the run around the grouthe Tigers had . The Tigers also had a few playdown, and I hope I'm there when they all fire at o n

At sunny Bennetswood, newcomers St . Le,Emmaus took on a positive Hampton Rovers si,The first quarter was an even affair, both sides teing the waters to see what was what. The new b (fired in the second quarter, winning the ball out of Icentre consistently and their forwards Vaughangoals) and Henricus (5 goals) capitalised on thgood work to give them a sizeable half time lead. Ithird quarter was good hard football, the Rovers ting but unable to bridge the gap . Hampton Rovershard in the last quarter though, kicking 5 umswered goals to get within 8 points before the TBlues settled and came out 14 points the better .upset first up in the closest game of the round an(seems St . Leos are not just here to make up numb e

At the University, Monash up from 'D' Sectitook on North Old Boys from 'B' Section, and Iresult went according to plan . Sources suggest tlthe NOB's running game was superior to the wcrate of the Uni, boys, and the 79 points victory woicertainly back that up . After a reasonable start to Igame by both sides, the near perfect conditions wibetter suited to the NOB's on-ballers who managedget plenty of the ball to their forwards, who wiextremely effective in capitalising on their teamates good work . Good signs for the NOB's who icertainly look to improve on last year, whilst tMonash boys should look to blood some talent fran always successful reserves team.Preview - Round 2

The NOB's take on AJAX at Brunswick in NOappears to be a clash of the running sides . I woiexpect though that the Brunswick boys will usetheir experience to run over a enthusiastic AJfNorth Old boys by 8 goals.

Hampton Rovers take on Monash at Bluff Rcin what should be a good match. The teams are bcvery similar and both will be desperate to open thaccount . A hard one to pick but I think I will gothe Rovers in a close one .

Old Mentonians take on first up victors St . Leat Keysborough . The Panthers were ordinary l;week and will look to bounce back and although tSt. Leos boys were good in their win last weekwould expect the Panthers to use their experierand come out on top, no predictable margin thou g

D SECTIONby Peter Kelly& David Coo k

n apology from the printers commences thisweeks review of round one. Any of the club

contacts who couldn't recognise the two scribesowes us a few coldies after a match when we meet .All club contacts will now receive a pro formamatch report form, instructions and fax number toforward details of their matches . Please speak withyour secretary.

The opening of the 1996 season saw a greatgame as predicted in the match of the day betweenthe Punters and Beaumaris who opened up wellgaining control and holding it in their forward linefor ten minutes but were unable to convert . ThePunters slowly got their game plan going and forthe last half of the first quarter it looked as if theymight run out winners . The second quarter sawBeaumaris fight hard and work the ball forward tobe only eight points down at the long break. Bothbacklines were on top and for a while it was likebeing at the Davis cup . The last half as for thematch was a very tight contest and whenBeaumaris hit the front by 8 points with 8 minutesto go it would be necessary for the Punters to digdeep . They did and with scores virtually level adefensive mistake allowed them to smother a kickfrom the half back line and centre the ball for agreat mark and goal . Both clubs are to be congrat-ulated on a very high standard and great contestall day with the difference being the 'Punters' gal-lopers in Lubransky and Brohier .

The 'Jocs' travelled to meet the 'Red Devils'and decided to leave early for the long trip home .A fairly scrambly game with only three goals in itat the start of the last quarter and then the bus leftbecause the 'Red Devils' ran away and won by 9goals. An injury to 'Jocs' Brooker may not havehelped but a game is for four not three quarters .BOG goes to the devil Boyer .

The 'Blessed Virgins' travelled to the'Shoppers' monastery and ran out easy winners .The score is not a true indication as just after halftime the 'Shoppers managed to get within 3 goalsof their visitors before loosing concentration in thethird and letting the game get away from them .The 'Blessed Virgins' were just too big and fitter asthey ran away from the opposition and set up easygoals in the latter part of every quarter.

Old Geelong entertained Old Camberwell inthe spacious surrounds of Como Park andalthough the hosts were in front all day it was afairly close game until the last quarter when OGSwho were three in front then ran away from OldCamberwell. New captain coach Neeld was a focal

point and kicked six with Fell ows kicking 5 .The last game of the round was between Old

Essendon and Aquinas . The game saw 40 majorsposted in a high scoring game . Aquinas openedkicking the first three but then loose defenceallowed the home side into the match and they ledby 4 goals at the main break . Most of the goalswere kicked in the first half and with the defensiveside of both teams being addressed during thebreak each then had to make the most of the for-ward thrusts. Both main forwards managed a bagfull to lead the section goal kickers at this stage .THIS WEE K

Special mention goes to Aquinas where notJason but Shane Livingstone will pull on theboots for his 300th club game . A great effort andwith most of these in the seniors, congratulationsare forwarded from all clubs and the VAFA execu-tive on reaching this magnificent milestone .Aquinas will also unfurl their two pennants from1996 before respective games and with all teams athome it looks to be a great day for the Club . Theyplay host to the 'Red Devils' with both scribesselecting the visitors to get the points and unfor-tunately spoil their day. These two clubs have notpreviously met .

Beaumaris host Old Essendon two clubswhose paths have not crossed before . Beaumariswill be too strong and will record their first winevening the scoreboard for this season .

'Shoppers' and the 'Joes' meet again after lastplaying in 1993 when both Clubs were in F1 sec-tion . Both clubs were disappointing last week andthe 'Jocs' will expect their practise match form toreturn . However if it doesn't then the 'Shoppers'will pull off the victory. Both scribes select 'Jocs' towin with a home ground advantage .

The two sides relegated from C meet and withtheir last two meetings resulting in a win each theresult is not cut and dried . Both sides have sometall timber and it will be up to the crumbersaround the ground to take control . The 'Captain'selects OGS . while 'Chocolate' predicts 'BlessedVirgins' to win at home.

The last game of the round is between the'Punters' and Old Camberwell whose previousyear started well and ended in disappointment .Both sides recorded a win against each other i n

E EAST SECTIONby Barry Hickey

week may be a long time in politics, but inA amateur football, if you so much as blink ,you're in grave danger of totally losing the plot!Syndal Tally Ho elected to have their inauguralVAFA year in Club XVIII's, and we wish them everysuccess, but a bit of notification would have beenuseful .

With the exception of the Parkers and Cobras ,who did the decent thing and played a draw everyother result was the opposite of last week's predic-tion . Yarra Valley again look the goods, and Keware obviously a serious threat, but it is early daysand most clubs have gun players yet to get them-selves into football mode.

Round 1 ReviewEley Park had a rest .

Yarra Vall ey OB's played the traditional pipeopener against Old Carey at Domeney Reserve andgave them the traditional thumping . The first termwas played at a furious pace, leaving field umps,Garry Waldron and Mark Evans aghast at thethought of having to maintain that rate all day .From the second quarter on Yarra's more effectiveuse of the ball, saw them move steadily away fromthe C's, who never conceded, but were unable tomatch Yarra's proficiency. Mark Yarnell and WesMudge battled tirelessly for the C's, while MichaelWhite, and Brad Peake took the C's apart withtheir on-ball play for Yarra, in a very good side .

Kew walloped Richmond Central with an awe-some last quarter display, though there was only 2points in it at the last change . In an entertainingmatch . Kew's size and aggression told in the end .Merv Shannon, playing his 100th, put in a goodone for Central, as did Andy Siwka. Brian Cull en,Spider Kennegeisser, Steve Boutros and GregPorte stood out for Kew who were happy with theirseason start.

Eltham Collegians were too good forHawthorn Citizens, being in control right fromthe first bounce . The Citizens showed improve-ment in the second half, with good performancesfrom Shulz on his wing, Avery at CHF, and Power, roving. It was the Turtles day though for a veryconvincing victory which included a spectacular

'hanger' on the forward line by Air Frankie, andgreat games by 'Salty' Hedley, Ronnie Bishop,'Doof Dwyer, Mick Turner at CHF and GraemeClarke, centre .

Chirnside Parkand Bull een Cobrasdead heated in athriller out at theKimberley, and they were both either so elated orannoyed with the result, that they didn't want totalk about it .

Round 2 PreviewOld Carey play Eley Park at the Carey Sports

Complex and will need to lift their game to take thefour points against the Sharks . The C's will bene-fit from the return of some good players, but alsohave to cover several injuries from Round 1 . TheSharks have had an extra week of preparation andwith their honest style of contesting every posses-sion, will take the game right up to the C's . Therewill only be a few points difference in this match, with the C's having just enough edge to be in fronton the line .

Kew meet Yarra Valley at Victoria parkReserve in the clash of the 1997 Titans . Kew wereominously good last week, so this will be a greatgame for the spectators . Both sides are quick, hard at the ball, and disciplined with Yarra havinga tad more leg speed than Kew, but that could beoffset by Kew's size and aerial ability . Kew andYarra are equally strong across the centre and onthe ball, so the outcome will probably come downto which side 'gets the breaks' . Kew play theirground extremely well, and should be a few pointsup at the close.

Hawthorn Citizens are at home to RichmondCentral and will be looking to get away to a betterstart than they managed last week . Centrals willbe in fairly ugly frame of mind following last week'strouncing and should be too strong and experi-enced for the enthusiastic Citizens, for a 4/5 goalwin .

Bulleen Cobras host Eltham at KoonungReserve, and on round one results will be a formi-dable opponent for the Collegians . The Turtles playwith a lot of dash and flair, but will find the Cobrassolid defence and gritty application a handful . TheCobras should take the honours by 4 goals .

Chirnside Park have the bye .Reserves winners should be : Old Carey, Yarra

Valley, Richmond Central and Bulleen Cobras .Correspondents the Monday contacts are

9547 9144 and fax 9547 7764 .

E CENTRAL SECTIONby Mick James

Expected wins to last year's front runnersBlacks and Willy and positive starts for th e

Magpies and UHSOB shed a little light on howseason '97 will fall into place on what was a mag-nificent day for football .

Round 1 reviewAt the Western Oval a fit and committed West

Brunswick showed up an underdone UniversityReds . A s ix goal to one opening was too much fora Reds side lacking cohesion to peg back . For theMagpies Adam Kinane had some sting in the tailwith two goals from the guts while DamienCoonan was influential all over the ground .Notable was the innovation of the third umpirewith Wests 300 game legend Steve Fyffe making acameo with the whistle in the third term . Newittand Coombes were also influential while for thevanquished Farrell , Wright and Drury could holdtheir heads high . The reserves result was the otherway round with the Reds exposing unexpecteddepth in a quality performance that saw a numberof players putting their hands up for senior births ."Tizza" Terrill and Atkins were excellent acrossHB for the Reds while McAllister and Stuart toiledhard for the Maggies .

On a rock hard Ransford Oval UniversityBlacks got off to the sort of start that will strikefear into the hearts of most clubs In E Central . Anine goal opening term all but put the gamebeyond doubt despite the absence of full forwardRob Hall who expects to have overcome an ankleinjury by this week . That will leave "Planet" withjust fifteen games to reach his own target of themagical ton, a big ask made even tougher by thequality of the rest of the Blacks forwards with cap-tain "Clakker" snagging five lazy ones and stand-in spearhead "Whitey" dominant in the air . Creditto Warriors coach David Twomey who got hischarges focused on making the Blacks work hardin the second and third stanzas . But the heat did-n't help and a poor last quarter saw the good workundone. Best for Old Westbourne were AngCh risto with five goals after a two year lay off and"Beep-beep" Baarini . In the twos Westbourne'slack of depth at this time of year was shown up bythe perennial premiers who may have already pen-cilled in a late date for their footy trip .

A minor upset out at Bundoora with therumours of the demise of UHSOB greatly exagger-ated as La Trobe found out . A late influx of play-ers at Parkville has given High unexpected depthwhile strong showings from new captain Crai g

12

Skinns and fellowstalwarts Peter"Flea" McLean andRichard "I' ll betheir on Tuesday" Freijah saw the Trobeljumped in the first term and unable to claw theway back despite a gallant second half . La Trobecause wasn't helped when it had to rob the ones Iget a ressies side onto the field and it will be littconsolation that they may already have a winnfin the Edward Beale award for the season witcorrespondents impressed with the bouffant siting atop the number 5 black and reds guernsey

North Brunswick must have had visions of aearly upset when they led Williamstown by a go,~at the first break down at Fearon Reserve but a 1goal second term from the home side turned thmatch on its head with new boy Swinton's bag c7 putting him among the best along with Thegand Smart . Ell is, Demo rton and Lirosi workehard in the heat for North. In the early game thBaysiders were far too strong.Preview

The deep south advantage is the only thinseparating the two wests with Old Westbourne thtip by a solitary sausage .

There's no going past Blacks at this stage cthe season with the talent coming up from th,Under 19's irresistible . North will give the student, plenty to think about but they'll still go down by !goals .

The journey to Brens Oval will hold no concern :for Will iamstown who'll be winners by 10 goals .

La Trobe should be able to get on the board b ,35 points as Swinburne makes their belated start

Uni Reds have the bye .Personality Pars

Congratulations to Derek Horsburgh wh<bring up his 50th game for Old Westbournetoday. The milestone comes after seven years witlthe Warriors and despite a tough run with injuries

ROUND 1

E SOUTH SECTIONby Ken Bremner

& Tom Brain

o real surprises in the season opener, so muchso that the 'Dynamic' duo (K.B & T .B) selected

all 5 winners, however only 4 individually. Withthe 1st game under the belt, all clubs and morespecifically, match committees, will be better ableto assess their future prospects .

Not a good start for ANZ Albert Park, goingdown to St Mary's by 26 points . The 1st half wasan even one with ANZ taking an early lead only tosee the Sainters peg them back and in fact headthem at the long interval . The Zedders thanks to aspirited 3rd quarter, again held sway at lemontime however St Mary's got their midfield into fullswing and quickly put the game result beyonddoubt . MVP's for ANZ were Nicolosi (7 goals),Peter Smith and Nick Rutherford and for StMary's Learmonth, Pittiti (7 goals) and O'Brien .

The St Pats Mentone V Powerhouse gamepromised plenty and from the scoreline it deliveredthe goods . Can't elaborate much as no matchreport was forthcoming, however suffice to saythat had St Pat's had their straight kicking bootson (44 shots to 28) then the margin could wellhave been more than 11 points at siren time . Canmake mention of Powerhouse's MVP's S. Craven(8 goals), A. Jackson and D.Wright.

Much the same could be said of theElsternwick victory over Monash Gryphons . TheWickers having 39 pot shots compared to 25, yetscoring by only 14 points . Again, 'tis a little diffi-cult to report on general play and better players foreach team when we don't receive any info .

'Angles', El Presidento from Peninsulareports that his charges worked hard all day andwith a good team effort ran out strong winnersover Oakleigh AFC in a high scoring game . (Who'skidding who Al?, high scoring for you maybe butcertainly not for Oakleigh - K.B) . MVP's includedTrewhitt, Landry, Briggs, Kent, A . Bonner andCooke .

At 'Yarra' Park, Soutbank locked horns with avery tenacious and much improved Glenhuntly .Whilst the margin at full-time was convincing itcould also be argued that it was in some ways flat-tering .

The bankers only gained full ascendancy in thelatter stages of the final quarter and up till thattime the game was always in the balance . Beadvised now that the Hunters will win more thanthey lose! MVP's for Southbank were Pitts,O'Sullivan, McNamara, Wallmeyer andPutamorsie with Nudge kicking S.

PREVIEW - ROUND 2Oakleigh v St Mary's - Whilst the Sainters v

travel to play away brim full of confidence with a«under their belts I'm tipping they'll limp home licing their wounds . I just can't have it that Oakleicould be as bad as last weeks scoreline sugge;(maybe Peninsula are worldbeaters) and at home Ibanking on a much more solid performance withlittle pride at stake . Oakleigh by 13 points .

Winning form is always good form and evithough the Oaks will obviously improve at homethink the Sainters can continue to surprise arwill record win Number 2 .

Monash Gryphons v Peninsula - To suggethat the Gryphons will welcome the Pirates woube a little sarcastic . The Peninsula boys will 'looking for a Bradman type scoreline with duckegs for the home side . Macca will have the Piratmind right on the job from the outset to keep tlscoreboard ticking over as %age gained now is li' .money in the bank at season's end . Monash wthrow everything into the fray, however I think tlvisitors will have all the answers and a lot morPirates by plenty . . . . . I suggest 80 points .

My spies tell me that if the Wicks had hakicked straight the Gryphs would have be(slaughtered, and in agreeance with you KB oifeels the Pirates even away from their own base wbe too strong . It appears DW-S was not missed! !

Elsternwick v Powerhouse - At the posta ;stamp the home side are always hard to knock cand this year all reports suggest they've improveOne the other hand, pundits make mentioned ththe House have lost a few of their playing stocand that a few of them found their wayWickerland . This being the case this game coube a little beauty . Against the grain I'm goingselect the visitors, Powerhouse to bounce backthe winners list albeit narrowly by 11 points . Plove lost here due to the happenings of '96 . alwa, hard to beat at home, they really play their grourwell do the Wicks but will it be enough to beat tiHouse, I don't think so .

Glenhuntly v St Pat's Mentone - Back chome soil for the lst time this year the Hunte!will most certainly make matters very difficult fSt . Pat's to take the points . The Hunters have go(ball getters in midfield and whilst a little short cfor top quality finishers if the ball gets up theoften enough they can be guaranteed of a healtlscoreline. The St . Pat's look to be a solid outfit

,, ;,soned performers . On a hiding to nothing I'll~ciclc Illy head out and plonk on the Hunters toscoLc by 15 points .

Altflough very impressed with the revampedi lunters last week I think the Vultures extra heightaround the ground should be enough to see themF,: ,%T DEAD another victim as they prepare for the1) ;,; clash with the Tigers in a fortnight.

AiYZ Albert Park v Southbank - One thing I'msure on is that my sparring partner (Tommy) will1,~, v e a foot in both camps here . And why not? He'sbeen "a great servant in the past at ANZ . The gameitself should be hotly contested with a rivalry goingback over many years . Southbank appear to betravelling a little better at present with a winalready under their belts, so the Zedders will real-ly have to be a their best to beat them . I think not,and hence predict the Bankers to record a soft 48point win . Mixed emotions will be the order or thedav here as my times at ANZ were some of the bestof my life, but as the saying goes that was IN THEPAST and we must LOOK AHEAD, I am a SOUTH-BANKER now and that allows me to confidently tipanother victory for the Tigers .

N5% success rate in Round 1 augurs well for auecessful season for this veteran scribe wh o

now faces not only old friends but recycled duosand tiros in the guest for the writer's holy grail, theConnell Cup.

RESULTS OF ROUND 1SECTION 1

OLD BRIGHTON - BLOODS started their sea-son on a high note when they convincingly defeat-ed ST KEVINS by twenty-one points . OLDSCOTCH vindicated my support when they againdefeated DE LA SALLE, who pegged SCOTCH tothirty points after losing to them by thirty-onepoints in the 1996 Preliminary Final. Without theirforward accuracy it seems that DE LA SALLEwould have lost by more. MAZENOD gave notice oftheir renaissance as a power when they overcametheir travel tiredness to easily defeat reigningNorth Section premiers, ST BERNARDS by s ixtypoints . Last week, ST BERNARD'S Coach, BrianMoon told me he was facing the season with confi-dence . Surely this confidence must now be dentedas ST BERNARDS showed their old trait of kickinginaccurately. COLLEGIANS continued with theirimproved form shown in 1996 when they recordeda fifty-two point victory over OLD MELBURNIANS,who failed to show that they will be final's con-tenders in 1997. OLD XAVERIANS had the BYE.SECTION 2

Congratulations to OLD ESSENDON GRAM-MARIANS who won their first match in Club XVIIIwhen they outplayed THERRY-PENOLA andrecorded a forty-nine point victory. As this victorywas on the J. P. Fawkner Oval it was even moremeritorious! KEW belied their lowly position in1996 with a sixty-nine point victory over debu-

t an ts, MT LILYDALE . The new comers quicklylearned the realities of Amateur Football from theexperienced KEW players . From an even contestwhere scoring shots were equal, MARCELLIN,through greater steadiness in attack, were able todefeat MONASH WHITES by twenty points .

18

Unfortunately OLD

L

GEELONG could notmuster a side and soforfeited to THORN-BURY COUGARS . SYNDAL TALLY HO had theBYE .

PREVIEW OF ROUND 2SECTION 1

The match of the round will be that betweenOLD SCOTCH and OLD BRIGHTON - BLOODSauspicious start, I favour the steadier OLDSCOTCH to win today . On last week's formMAZENOD must be selected to defeat DE LASALLE . After such a resounding victory at STBERNARDS, MAZENOD should win very welltoday. COLLEGIANS, who surely will play in theALBERT PARK area, which is largely unchargedterritory to ST BERNARDS MOON men! AlthoughI saw ST BERNARDS brush COLLEGIANS aside inthe 1996 First Semi-Final, I select COLLEGIANStoday . OLD XAVERIANS should successfullyaccomplish two tasks today. The first will be theunfurling of their 1996 Pennant and the secondshould be a comfortable victory over the disap-pointing OLD MELBURNIANS. ST KEVINS havethe BYE .

SECTION 2OLD ESSENDON GRAMMARIANS, on a high

from last week's victory and aided by their ownwind swept terrain, should give SYNDAL TALLYHO a baptism of fire in their Amateur debut . OLDESSENDON certainly are my selection . THERRY-PENOLA after last week's failure face the long tripto MT LILYDALE as neither side gave its support-ers much excitement in Round 1 . KEW travel toCOMO PARK where they should take the pointsfrom OLD GEELONG, who will be making their1997 debut. MONASH WHITES have a distincthome ground advantage over THORNBURY-COUGARS, who face lack of match practice as wellas a tiring trip to CLAYTON. MONASH are myselection . MARCELLIN have the BYE .

COACHES' CLIPBOARDAFCAIVAFA

PSYCHING UP - The inexact art of the coacht 's the pre-match ritual across the nation : fraz-zled coaches, the elite to the obsolete, grasp for

words that will have their players run throughbrick walls. What to say that they haven't said athousand times already? Will it make a difference?

What about a bit of Churchillian grittiness?"Never in the field of human conflict was so muchowed by so many - that's you blokes - to so few -that's me! "

Or some JFK inspiration : "And so, my fellowteammates, ask not what your team can do for you- ask what you can do for me! "

The hard truth for a coach who resorts to over-wrought oratory in the countdown to the kick-offis that he is probably destined for humiliation andwill soon be out of a job. The psyching of his play-ers should have started days before - soon afterthe last game. Although surrounded by people, heis alone while his fate depends on how others per-form. Coaches, say Peter Sterling, sleep likebabies : "They wake up every two hours crying."Sterling, rugby league's player of the eighties, hasseen a lot of these clipboard commanders comeand go .

Gerard Healy, the 1988 AFL BrownlowMedallist who played 211 games for the Melbourneand Sydney FC, goes further, claiming the coach'srole as mystical motivator is the most over-ratedaspect of football. He believes a team's motivationis 85% players and 15% coach - even less withsome coaches : "The essence of all performance insport is being able to find motivation from within. "

To Healy coaching is management skills to beused in the week leading up to the game : "Somepeople have a quality which allows them to reachinto a person's heart and mind - without gettingtoo dramatic about it. They can find that little bitthat can help others motivate themselves . That'sthe point - coaching isn't about helping them moti-vate themselves, finding the tool to discover whatit would be like to be held in the same esteem asPeter Sterling or AFL star Greg Williams . "

Dr. Ian Lynagh, the Brisbane based sportspsychologist and father of Australian rugby unionfive-eighth Michael Lynagh, agrees with Sterling

and Healy that the frenzied "go out and murder thebums" approach does not work - although thereare plenty of coaches who still use it .

Lynagh says a coach must untangle his emo-tions from the team's performance : "A good coachmust look at what the players need - not what he'sfeeling or wanting to project onto them . If a coachis angry because his players have performed poor-ly, he ought not go in front of them until heprocesses the anger and gets rid of it. A day later,he's calmed down, he's viewed the tape and canreact objectively. "

Ken Judge a former Hawthorn champion, believes his week-in-week-out job as coach is tokeep the approach fresh, finding new challengesfor everyone : "But, of course, the hard part is thatthe message is usually the same. You have to findother ways of presenting it."

The lead-up to the game involves preparingplayers as a team and as individuals - every one ofthe 21/22 players can expect a one-on-one con-versation about his task: "The earlier notice youcan give a player, the more time he has to pre-pare." This is especially true of those to be givenspecific tasks, such as "tagging" opposing stars, animportant part of Australian Rules these days .

By the time the players arrive at the ground, most of the preparation is done : "My message thenis limited - we'll talk about the team, tactics, jobsfor certain players, so everybody is aware . Thenwe'll go through our game goals and, really, thelast bit is just simulation to fire them for the job. That can be done in a lot of ways - by me talking,by a video showing them positive things ."

Again, this does not mean Rocky or Chariots ofFire. "Gone are the days when you got your matesto take the bolts out of the door hinges and thenthe coach would kick the door until it fell over .That sort of thing used to happen, it really did .Players are more aware now ."

5 YEARS AGO - 1992

~United crBreweries very who grateful &

Centenary year with the gift of a set of full sizedaluminium goal posts, suitably adorned with CUBcorporate padding, and identical in every way to

those at the MCG .; in "A" North Old Boys beat De La Salle OC,

teams in 1985-87-88, Russell was seriouslyinjured in 1989 but showed his great courage toreturn as a member of the 1990 flag winning team .

Russell was a carnival player and silenced manyinterstate stars .

It was a big day at MHSOB when the club

unfurled its 1991 D Section Seniors and

Reserves premiership flags. It was the club's first

senior flag since 1991, and its second reserves flag

in a row . And celebrate they did, with both teamshaving big wins against Fawkner. The Seniors won

18 .16 (124) to 10 .20 (80) and~~bruton,

It was a thriller in E between Aquinas and ANZ

Bank. ANZ led all day and held off a strong last 5goal quarter to win 20 .6 (126) to 18 .16 (124) .

Straight kicking does give a wonderful start to the

season . For ANZ, Nicholosi ( 10 goals), Jack

McDonald, Paul Boyle (defence) were best play-

ers and for Aquinas, Chris Burder (ruck), Tarulli

(r-r) and Colliver (rover) .

Glenn 'Gladis' Roulent - 200 games with theRovers, and more comebacks than Gary Ablett, ashe started with the Rovers back in 1970 .

This would be a good opportunity for everyone toget together for the first function of the season .

During the first game and the practice match-es players may have noticed that there has beenpositional changes for the field umpires at thestart of a game . Only one umpire is in the centresquare with the Number 2 umpire taking position50 metres from goal and 20 metres from the majoraxis . Each umpire has a pre determined half of theground . After a goal is kicked "the umpire" returnsto the number 2 position in the same half of theground . The number 2 becomes "the umpire" forthe centre bounce. (Note : there is no change ofends) . This Sunday the 1997 FIDA season kicks off atElsternwick Park and Bendigo, and with the newdivisional structure in 1997 it is hoped that scoremargins that were rather large in 1996 will bedecreased somewhat this season .

This season will also see a new team into thecompetition in Ba llarat who will (at this stage)play (5) matches in the first half of the season, with a view to continuing in the remaining (5) orreturning in 1998 to complete a full fixture ofmatches . In 1997 there will also be no Magpiesteam which was made up of players who had noreal affiliation with any of the FIDA teams . Insteadof this system, in 1997 players will be directed toteams in their local area rather than form a hybridteam. Another happening over the off-season wasthat Mitcham and Chadstone have formed amerged team called the RAID Lions and will com-pete in Division 1, in the old Fitzroy jumpers .

Good luck to all teams today and may 1997 bea successful season for you all .

ROUND ONE - PREVIEWElsternwick Park matches see Karingal take

Maribyrnong on what is a replay of the 1996Division 2 Grand Final . Karingal have been a verysuccessful team more recently and althoughMaribyrnong will match them early Karingalshould win . Another replay of 1996 is the clash ofthe Marlins versus Broadmeadows in the Division

first and second quarters. The other umpire willcommence play for the third and fourth quarters .. For those who were not at training last week

saw Peter "Agate" Harris teach the field umpiresan old origami tradition of folding the paper work .We hope you took notes as "Agate" gets very dis-tressed if it is not neat and tidy. If you cannot fig-ure it out let the other person do it! !

Next week's column will see another profileand a word of inspiration from Michael Sneddon .I'm sure we will also have some gossip of the aftermatch antics at Marcellin, Ormond and OldScotch .

ELLE AND CLAUDIA

2 match . The Marlins were convincing winners inlast year's Grand Final and with Broadmeadows alittle behind the eight ball, in terms of organisationI will stick with the Marlins today. Heidelberg playhost to the newly formed Lions and although thecombine will be competitive the Bombers will winwell . Parkside (1) welcome Ballarat for their veryfirst match in the competition and I am sure it willbe a memorable game for all concerned . Parkside(1) should win, although Ballarat are a realunknown . Werribee play host to Parkside (2) andshould be far too strong for Parkside today, andHawthorn play Ringwood in the final match atElsternwick Park with Ringwood being the morefavoured team to win .

Bendigo matches this weekend will seeBendigo (1) host Keilor at their new home groundthe North Bendigo Oval . Atkins Street, NorthBendigo . Although defeated in last year's Division1 Grand Final the Warriors should defeat Keilortoday comfortably .
