The Airport

Aspen Airport (ASE) is a commercial serviceairport experiencing explosive growth incommercial flights. Flights have increased 26%YTD since 2016 and enplanements total 250,000. United, Delta and American service ORD, MSP,ATL, DFW, IAD, PHX, SLC, LAX, SFO, and DEN.ASE’s operational budget for 2018 is$10,019,957.

Atlantic Aviation operates the airport’s FBO.Aircraft Maintenance is offered by West StarAviation, and Mayo Aviation is an aircraft chartercompany based at the airport. The airport alsohas a restaurant, gift shop, and several rental carcompanies.

Aspen airport is entering one of, if not the mostdynamic periods in its 70-year history. The FAAjust issued ASE a FONSI for its EnvironmentalAssessment which clears a path for major airportdevelopments pending community dialogue.

First, relocating the runway to meet Group IIIdesign standards, allowing larger jets and thenew generation of regional jets. Second, buildinga new commercial service terminal cleared for140,000 square feet replacing the existing 47,000square foot terminal.

Additionally, the airport has Master Plans under consideration by county commissioners toredesign and relocate the terminal area entranceroads, public and employee parking lots, andground transportation areas. ASE’s ARFF indexwould upgrade to C. The development is estimated to be $400,000,000.

There are 49 employees at the airport. This is anexciting era to become part of TEAM AspenAirport. Several “new” key leadership positionshave been created and will be advertised in thecoming months beginning with: The AssistantAviation Director, Directory of Facilities, Directorof Safety and Security, and Director of ProgramManagement.

The Position

Under the direction of the Airport Director, thisposition is responsible for day-to-day operations ofthe Aspen/Pitkin County Airport. In the absence ofthe Director, this position performs the duties of theDirector.

The Assistant Aviation Director:

• Leads, directs, and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Aspen/Pitkin CountyAirport. Leadership and oversight of operations,including facilities, safety and security, tenantrelations and the FBO.

• Directs the operations of Aspen/Pitkin CountyAirport, coordinates with the Federal AviationAdministration, the Transportation SecurityAdministration, and the State of ColoradoDepartment of Transportation Bureau ofAeronautics.

• Is responsible for implementing the Director’sinitiatives for the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport.

• Ensures that the Aspen/Pitkin County Airportcomplies with all Federal Aviation Regulations andPart 139 standards.

• Participates in the negotiation and implementationof leases and contracts with airport tenants.

• Assists in developing the preparation of the annualbudget, including the establishment of rates andcharges.

• Attends appropriate meetings of the Board ofCounty Commissioners and other meetings asrequested by the Director.

• Supports the relationship between Pitkin Countygovernment and the public by demonstratingcourteous and cooperative behavior wheninteracting with citizens, visitors, and County staff;maintains confidentiality of work-related issues andCounty information; performs other duties asrequired or assigned.

Position Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree inbusiness administration, airport management, publicadministration, aeronautical engineering or a relatedfield; and five years of progressively responsiblemanagement experience in airport management,airport business management or airport operationsat a FAR Part 139 commercial service airport; ORany combination of education, training andexperience. Accredited Airport ExecutiveCertification (A.A.E.) or International AirportProfessional designation (IAP) is desirable but notrequired.
