The Blitzing Bishops
Room 35 has been packed with Chess players on Tuesdays from 12:10-12:50. I am expecting more Chess players to start attending once the weather gets worse.
Many of the students coming do not know how to play chess. They are learning some things from their peers and through experience. If you have time, please stop bye to play a game. I could use players at all skill levels.
Please check out my website at www.lenawhitmoregt.weebly.com to see pictures of our Chess club in action.
AstronomyThe weather did not cooperate
with our schedule this year. Not only did the clouds block our view of the partial solar eclipse, they also interfered with our Stargazing Party. The Palouse Astronomical Society is still excited to have students look through their telescopes and has given me a few spring dates to consider. I will announce our new party date closer to the event.
The students are wrapping up their research projects and getting ready to present them to you. All presentations will be given on Thursday, November 20th, during your child’s GT time. I will need some parent volunteers to help with the second grade presentation. We will be inflating their planetarium in the picnic shelter area. If you are attending that session, please wear your coat.
Jr Great BooksOn Tuesday, November 25th we will be starting our next unit. Students in grades 1-3 will be reading and discussing stories from the Jr. Great Books curriculum. Each week the group will read a new story on Tuesday and respond to the story on Thursday. Students must read the selection in order to participate in the response. I am attempting to find e-book links for each selection and will have those passed on my website in case your child misses school on Tuesday.
Students in grades 4-5 will be reading an approved book of choice and writing a spin-off story using the characters and setting from the book they select. Spin-off stories will be published as an e-book and linked to the Lena GT website for you to read.
