In 1849, Nathaniel Cook realized the need for a standard set ofchess pieces that could be used in tournaments throughout theworld. In collaboration with his brother-in-law John Jaques ofLondon (a noted ivory turner and businessman), he designed andproduced a clean, functional pattern that could be manufacturedat a reasonable cost.

Cook and Jaques quickly secured the endorsement of HowardStaunton, the self-proclaimed world chess champion and notedShakespearean scholar. Thus was born the Staunton Chessmen—a clean, elegant design that remains the standard for all serious,sanctioned chess competitions to this day.
