IB Diploma Programme Core The core (CAS, TOK, and EE) is the heart of the IB Diploma Programme. The components give students unforgettable high school experiences that prepare them for university studies and help them to develop the characteristics that are outlined by the learner profile. Theory of Knowledge This course is intended to stimulate higher-order thinking skills, critical reflection, and personal evaluation of one’s own beliefs and values. The basic question, ‘How does one know?’, is the philosophical backbone of the course’s curriculum. In an effort to answer this question, students explore the following ways of knowing: emotion, reason, perception and language. Students also consider the following areas of knowledge in the course: the arts, natural and human sciences, history, mathematics and ethics. Students engage in directed discussion regarding the nature, purpose, strengths, and limitations of various knowledge systems to reflect on how the aforementioned concepts relate to all of their courses and the outside world. This discussion is intended to yield appreciation for various cultural perspectives. Assessment Students are expected to write an essay of 1200-1600 words that addresses one of the ten stimulus questions provided. This assessment is assessed externally by the IBO. Students must also complete a solo or group presentation that is assessed internally which addresses how they can relate their experiences and knowledge of TOK to real-life issues. These may be recorded for moderation purposes.

The Extended Essay This activity provides candidates with the opportunity to develop an academic interest that lies outside of the prescribed curriculum. The EE requires a 4000-word research paper to be completed and is assessed externally by the IBO. Candidates will begin the process of the EE towards the end of their junior year and should pick a mentor for their paper from the school’s faculty. Students are expected to complete the bulk of their research during the summer holiday. Mentors will meet and guide the candidates periodically throughout the process; however, mentors are not to have a heavy influence on the work. Through this activity, candidates are challenged to manage their own time and to further develop their research, writing, and independent thinking skills. It is recommended that a total of 40 hours (including research, writing, and editing) be logged in order to complete the EE. Candidates are encouraged to select a topic about which they are engaged and excited to alleviate any hardship during research and writing. Given its strong focus on independent research skills, writing skills, and academic honesty, the EE is an excellent preparatory tool for post-secondary work.

Assessment Completion of the EE is mandatory during the first semester of the candidate’s senior year. The EE is assessed externally and serves as the capstone project for Hillsboro High School / MNPS graduation. This capstone project is mandatory for all IB Diploma candidates. .

Creativity, Action and Service CAS provides great balance to the academic load of the IB Diploma. In order to complete the CAS requirements, candidates are expected to complete 10 activities with reasonable balance between creativity, action and service. One of these activities will be a long-term project that will last the duration of the students’ junior and senior years. Hillsboro consistently has great opportunities for students to complete CAS requirements. What are CAS activities?

- Creativity – Creative endeavors such the arts, music, photography.

- Action – Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle. Sports, physical learning experiences and expeditions.

- Service – Unpaid, voluntary endeavor in local or international communities. What are the aims / learning outcomes of CAS? Through each CAS activity, students will meet one or more of these outcomes:

- Increased awareness of one’s own strengths and areas for growth.

- Undertaken new challenges.

- Planned and initiated activities.

- Worked collaboratively with each other.

- Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities.

- Engaged with issues of global importance.

- Considered the ethical implications of their actions.

- Developed new skills. Assessment Students are evaluated based on their commitment, level of personal development and reflections regarding said development. The IBO moderates CAS completion via the random selection of student portfolios. Failure to complete CAS satisfactorily will result in a candidate not being awarded the IB Diploma.

Higher Level vs. Standard Level

The difference between HL and SL courses is normally one of breadth rather than depth. However, each subject is different. Students must complete 150 hours of class time for SL courses and 240 hours for HL courses. All subjects, both HL and SL are graded on a scale of 1-7, where 7 is the top grade. University Credit In some cases, high achievement in an IB subject (SL or HL) will be worth college credit. Each university has different policies for awarding credit. This information is usually available under the admission tab of university homepage. In addition, students are encouraged to check http://www.ibo.org/diploma/recognition/scholarships/ for a list of universities that grant special scholarships for IB Diploma holders.

Flexibility of Movement

Candidates who feel as though they have made the wrong choice in course selection may have an opportunity to choose a new course within the first month of their junior year. These decisions are made on a case-by-case basis after consulting with the IB Diploma Academy Counselor, IB Diploma Programme Coordinator, and IB Diploma Academy Principal. Candidates with Special Assessment Needs The IBO allows for provisions to be made for students who have special assessment needs. They must be dealt with on a case-by-case basis through the IB Diploma Programme Coordinator. Students will need substantial written evidence of their needs, which are then submitted to the IBO one year before sitting for exams.

Expectations, Rules and Requirements

The IB Diploma is a demanding and challenging high school curriculum. As such, it places a very real pressure on students at times, and success in the programme depends on collaboration and trust between students, faculty and parents.

The Role of the Student The student is responsible for his or her own success. The student must develop and maintain organization skills, be balanced and motivated, and must make every effort to meet the demands of the courses in which he/she has enrolled. In addition, the student must be a good citizen; students who are in bad standing with the school will not be allowed to sit for IB exams.

The Role of the Faculty Faculty members are to be seen as facilitators of learning in the IB Diploma Academy. They are to provide a clear course outline and to ensure that students have covered all of the content and assessment requirements of their course. They are to collect data on student progress and to provide regular feedback to students, the IB Diploma Academy team, and the IB Diploma Programme Coordinator. The school faculty shall help to develop the IB Learner Profile.

The Role of the Parent Parents are expected to support their child’s academic and social development throughout the child’s time in the IB Diploma Academy. This support is achieved through seeking and responding to information regarding the progress development of their respective children during the IB Diploma Programme. Parents should use the appropriate avenues to communicate with faculty, advisors, coordinators, and administrators.

students can make the appropriate course choices. 2. Keep in touch – Ensure that the school has working emails and phone numbers

in the registrar’s office. Contact faculty members and join their mailing lists for class updates.

3. Keep your child in school – Although occasional missed days are unavoidable, encourage your student to be in school every day.

Causes for Concern

The cause for concern system is in place to prevent students from falling behind or under-performing in their IB subjects. Whenever students miss major deadline or fail to produce work of acceptable quality, faculty are expected to discuss their concerns with their Academy Team members and IB Diploma Programme Coordinator.

If an unacceptable trend continues, parents will be informed, conferences may be held, and the future of a student in the IB Diploma Academy will be brought into question.

Finding a College and Applying Prepared by Meri Kock In order to find the college that is a fit for you, follow these steps: -Conduct an online search for colleges that meet your interests. Refer to the “Career and College Resources” sheet for a list of useful websites. -If possible, visit your top college choices in person and speak with admissions/academic advising personnel. Prepare a list of questions in advance, or use the “College Comparison Worksheet” included in the packet. -Make note of ALL deadlines, including application for admission, application for housing, financial aid, scholars/honors programs, orientation sessions, etc. -If a recommendation from your high school counselor is required get all the information and forms to your counselor AT LEAST by the 15th of the month PRIOR to the deadline. That means if you have a November deadline, your recommendation form needs to be given to Miss Kock by October 15th. The exception is January deadlines, those recommendation forms need to be given to Miss Kock by December 1st due to the Winter Break. -Order your ACT (www.act.org) or SAT (www.collegeboard.com) scores from the companies to be sent directly to the colleges you are interested in attending. Even better, list your colleges on the ACT/SAT registration form so they’ll be sent automatically and for free. Ordering them after the fact will delay having them sent and will cost about $10.00 per score report sent. -Send your transcripts preferably through CollegeforTN (most in-state colleges), or request them from the office. -Complete application paperwork. Write, revise, edit, and re-write your application essay. -MAIL YOUR APPLICATION FORM(S) EARLY. Many colleges have online applications available and prefer those. Please use those if they are available. -Be patient if you check to see if your transcript and scores have arrived and the college says they haven’t. Remember, colleges have literally THOUSANDS of forms to go through. In many cases it will take the admissions office time to update each student’s file. -If you are accepted to multiple universities, decide which one is your preferred school and notify them that you will be attending (if required). Notify schools you will NOT be attending of your decision so they can make the space available to another applicant. Make May 1st your deadline for making a decision, many colleges use that as their final decision deadline as well.
