HERITAGE FESTIVAL Thirty Two Years of Celebrating
East Providence CultureJuly is the time of year for our annual East Providence
Heritage Festival, that wonderful event that celebrates various cultures and traditions of the people who make up our city. Celebrating its 32nd year, this event is looked forward to all year round, partly because it seems to get better each year, by offering cultural representation, great food, outstanding entertainment, comfortable accommodations, local vendors, friendly people, old friends – and usually great weather!
The Heritage Festival Committee is a 17 member, mostly volunteer body of dedicated folks, who overlook every detail of this annual event to ensure yet another success.
Committee Chairman Clarence “Junior” Butler explains the process, “The Heritage Fest Committee meets each month, normally on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, beginning in August – just after the festival in July ends. We look at what we did, what we accomplished, what we didn’t accomplish, and how well it was received. At that point we start thinking about how we can improve it, and what we can do to make it better for the next year,” says Butler.
Each year the festivals’ biggest attraction and source of highest revenue come from its local and national entertainment acts, specifically the Saturday night headliners. This year the festival is proud to announce that Richard Street, lead singer of THE TEMPTATIONS will be performing on Saturday July 21, 2012 at 9:30pm.
You have to wonder how the committee manages to select the right groups to bring in. They look at the buying power of the audience, people in the 30 – 45 age bracket, because that is the festival’s primary audience. They have the most disposable income. They are the ones who give us the greatest revenue each year that sustains the festival. So, we look at music groups who will appeal to that audience. That is always a challenging task for the committee.
It is clear however, the Festival committee sees this festival as much more than just an opportunity for monetary profit. For them, the Annual E.P. Heritage Festival is a source of pride. They feel this city, this event – defines who we really are. The effort of the committee and the sponsors and the people who attend and support us does not go unnoticed. The reward for them is just in being a major part of another great festival.
The EP Heritage Festival is almost entirely self-funded. The event is self-sustaining, with no financial help from the city this year. The committee raises most of the money from year to year from sponsors. They re-invest any profit back into the organization to keep this festival going the next year.
The Heritage Fest Committee also donates to other organizations, charities, and non-profits such as the American Cancer Society, East Bay Women’s Shelter, Big Brothers Association, and this year they will be giving a portion of the proceeds to Cross Roads RI.
One of the other great traditions about the Heritage Festival has always been its great pricing, and this year is no exception! A 4 day weekend pass is only $25. One needs to only look around at other festivals in this state to see the prices are very competitive! For $25 you can come here for the whole weekend!
32nd Annual Heritage Festival HOURS: ADMISSION PRICE:Thursday, July 19, 6pm – 11pm $5.00Friday, July 20, 6pm – 11pm $5.00 Saturday, July 21, 3pm – 11pm $10.00Sunday, July 22, 3pm – 10:30pm $10.00WEEKEND PASS: All 4 days $25.00

heritage festival PurposeThe East Providence Heritage Festival, founded
in 1981, was conceived as a tribute to the richness and variety of the community’s ethnic and cultural heritage. To this end, the East Providence Heritage Festival Committee, in conjunction with the East Providence Parks & Recreation Department and numerous volunteers from civic, non-profit and business organizations, have joined efforts and resources for the past 31years to sponsor an annual festival honoring the values and unique customs of the myriad cultures that comprise and enhance community life.
It is the committee’s purpose and intent to create an atmosphere of understanding and pride in our respective aesthetic, intellectual and social origins and to transmit in tangible fashion a sense of that pride, knowledge and appreciation to succeeding generations.

One of the many highlights of Cathy's career was performing live with Meatloaf. She has in recent years utilized her talents for noble causes and has written songs for such charity organizations as “Kids Against Cancer” and “Defenders of Animal Rights.” Cathy is at her best with Little Paradise, awing audiences with her incom-parable impersonation of Pat Benatar. “I never took vocal lessons. I would just sing along every day to Pat's IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and CRIMES OF PASSION albums. Those were my vocal lessons.” Visit us at www.LittleParadiseBand.com
Little Paradise is a Pat Benatar experience un-like any other. The band includes all star musicians from the Northeast. Each player brings a high quali-ty sound and unlimited en-ergy to the stage, creating a show that must be seen. Fans of the band watch in excitement, as Little Para-dise fills the stage with the music of one of the greatest female singers in the world of rock.
Lead singer Cathy DaPrato has been en-tertaining audiences for almost 3 decades. She can sing anything and sound exceptional, while bringing phenomenal en-ergy to her performance.

don’t Miss The Many Booths at all four days
of The festivalLots of Heritage Festival attention is
focused on the four days of entertainment – but there’s a whole world of Festival fun on the baseball field with many food, mer-chandise, craft and public service booths available to visit.
Food booths include such treats as sau-sage and meatball sandwiches, clamcakes and chowders, doughboys, French Fries, Hawaiian Fries, pizza, ice cream, frozen ice treats, bakery goods, cotton candy, hot dogs, hamburgers, frozen lemonade and lots more.
For the craft lovers there are booths featuring many handmade items, perfect for giving now or for the holidays. Some of the region’s best craftspeople bring their wares to the Festival, including handmade jewelry.
Merchandise booths include many types of jewelry items, clothing, including the lat-est in T-shirt designs, sunglasses, hobby items, novelties and much more.
Specialty booths include temporary tat-toos, sand art, hair bling and baseball toss. There will also be a number of information booths as well.
The number of booths is still growing as press time for this program approached.
Just taking a look at the crowd on the baseball fields during the Saturday and Sunday night concerts proves the popularity of the booths. Pierce Stadium is filled with thousands of music fans, while the baseball field is jammed as well with people visiting all the booths.
A list of booths which had signed up as of press time can be found on pages 20 and 21.
Enjoy The Festival Picnic Grove
There are many food vendors at the Heri-tage Festival, from sausage sandwiches to freshly made pizza, seafood, doughboys,
French Fries and more –so much to enjoy! Conveniently located near the Field Tent, is a large picnic area with umbrella-covered
tables and chairs where festival-goers can relax and enjoy their food. The area
is close to many of the food vendors, the entertainment tent and the beer and wine tent. Patrons are asked to please
clear their tables when finished, using the nearby trash containers, so someone else
can have a clean table to use.

Fraternidad Folklórica Boliviana Saturday, July 21 ~ 6PM ~ Field TentFraternidad Folklórica Boliviana de Rhode Island (FFBRI), is
a registered non-profit organization founded in 1993 with the mis-sion of promoting and preserving the traditions of Bolivian culture through folklore.
This group is composed of dancers of different races, nation-alities, and religious beliefs who, intrigued by the magic of their beautiful Bolivian traditions, have helped keep their culture alive.
The dances and music are positive activities that entertain the youth of this community. This organization, aside from the cultural aspect, provides opportunities for their children to learn the values of respect, discipline and responsibility.

Everyone Enjoys Classic CarsWhether you are 15 or 50, one of the most enjoyable parts of the
Heritage Festival is the display of classic cars. The display changes each year, but it is sure to include everything from the Model T’s of the 1920’s to the cars of the forties and fifties, complete with rumble seats and running boards, along the classic T-birds, 55, 56 and 57 Chevy’s, Mercs, maybe a studebaker or two, perhaps even a Rambler or a Hudson. Not only will you get a close-up view of these well cared for vehicles, both inside and out, you’ll be able to talk with the car’s owners, about engine size, customizing, and everything else which makes these classics so popular.
These cars are all in running condition, licensed and ready to roll. You’ll be amazed at some of the features in these great cars, and you’ll agree that “they don’t make ‘em like that any more!”
In 1992, Luis and Norma Rodriguez invited a Caporales group from Virginia to perform. These dancers were the motivation needed for Eduardo and Mireya Sandoval to start a similar dance group in Rhode Island.
With the help of other families and with the direction of Peggy Sandoval, the newly formed Rhode Island dance group was formed. These dancers established the first dance group called the “Caporales de Rhode Island” and soon they were invited to many events. FFBRI has steadily progressed thanks to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who over the fifteen years have built the foundation on which our organization stands today

Magnolia Cajun BandSaturday, July 21 ~ 4PM ~ Field Tent
Since 1989, Magnolia has been New England’s hometown Cajun band. Learning their music form Louisiana’s finest, has earned them a solid reputation at home and recognition in the Cajun heartland. Their dance lessons and music have helped build a strong sense of community at festivals and fais-do-dos all over Northeast. Their monthly Saturday night dance has been New England’s hottest ticket for more than fifteen years!
Playing high energy two steps and sultry waltzes, the band’s twin fiddles, accordion, guitar, bass and of course, rich vocals keep the audience on its feet long into the night
In addition to hosting our own monthly dances, Magnolia plays festivals and concerts throughout the region. The band is also available for weddings and other private functions.
For those new to Cajun dancing, the band can provide excellent dance instruction in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

Rumbafrica was founded in 1992 by Tshibangu Kadima, who was born in Lubumbashi in Congo. Kadima came to the U.S. originally to study Computer Engi-neering and graduated from Northeastern University. He introduced New England to SOUKOUS music. The Boston-based group performs music and dance combin-ing rhythms of traditional Congolese rumba (a variant of the Cuban rumba) with the modern non-stop soukous beat.
Kadima composes and writes the troupe’s songs and choreographs their dance. Their repertoire includes songs in French, Swahili, Tshiluba and English and reflects Kadima’s hopeful vision of life and his prayer for positive change in Congo. Kadima songs convey a message of peace. He conducts entertaining and educational workshops in schools and universities around the country.
Rumbafrica is the Boston area’s premier dance band and has received numerous awards including the Boston Music Awards for Outstanding World Music Act in 1995 and an Award at Artscap 97 Festival in Baltimore MD for Outstanding World Music Act.
Kadima is also a music agent providing full service entertainment, production and event planning nationwide. He is resource-ful about diversity of talents. Rumbafrica has been selected for listing in the Mas-sachusetts Touring Roster.

The Tribeca GroupSaturday, July 21~8PM in the Stadium
The Tribeca Group was founded by Ron Campagnone in June of 2007. He hand picked the best two male singers from two other bands to form what is now Tribeca. These two talented singers are Chops Turner and Danny Tuirok. Ron then decided two incorporate the talent agency of Bob Saraceno Productions to be the exclusive agency for all of the band’s bookings. Bob, after hearing Tribeca, knew that this could be one of the best vo-cal groups that this area has ever seen. As they say, the rest is history!! Tribeca now has opened for The Temptations last September, is booked to open for the International star Julie Budd on October 13th at Rhode Island College, and now to perform at The East Providence Heritage festival with Richard Street and his Group (Original lead singer for The Temptations). Tribeca has also recorded an original song called “ A Kiss from Heaven” that was composed by a two time Grammy winner. The last piece of the puzzle was the addition of Angela Buckley by Ron Campagnone and Dan Tuirok, bringing this group to it’s current success level. Angela’s contribution vocally to the band brought this band “over the Top”. Bob Saraceno has said “ this is the only band in New England that has four lead singer”. Tribeca, now is playing 5 to 6 nights a week to “souled” out crowds, and is also available for pri-vate functions. For Bookings call: Bob Saraceno Productions 401-94-MUSIC. (401-946-8742)

RICHARD STREETformer lead singer of The Temptations
Saturday, July 21~9:30PM in the Stadium
Today, Richard presents his own show, with enthu-siastic vigor, which includes the leg-endary music of The Temptations along with other classic hit songs that document the golden years of the Motown sound.
Richard Street’s passion for The Temptations goes back to its origins in 1955 as a member of the Detroit doo-wop group The Distants, which included long time Temptation, Otis Wil-liams, as well as Richard’s cousin, the late Melvin Franklin who was The Temptations legendary bass singer until his untimely death in 1995. Richard left The Distants in 1959 to form The Monitors and the other members eventually went on to record for the newly formed Motown record label as The Temptations. But Richard always kept a hand in the band. Motown presi-dent Berry Gordy hired him in 1963 as a sort of quality control producer at the label, asking him to listen to new recordings and occasionally lend his tenor voice to sweeten a vocal track. By 1969 The Temptations’ silky harmonies had made them the top R&B vocal group in the world with a string of pop chart toppers such as “My Girl”, “(I Know) I’m losing you”, “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” and “Beauty’s Only Skin Deep”. The arrival of Richard, its first member to have actually been born in Detroit, together with Dennis Edwards signaled a notable musical shift in direction and the next few years would find The Temptations tackling topics in the news -- the Vietnam War and urban poverty -- with songs such as “Take A look Around”, “Ball Of Confusion” and the landmark “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”, which earned the group three Grammy Awards. Richard performed many hundreds of shows with The Tempta-tions in over 20 years as a member of the group, visited dozens of countries worldwide, and along with other members past and present, was there when the group was inducted into the Rock-n-Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989. In his upcoming book, Ball Of Confusion, Richard chronicles his years with the group.

Foghat The Band. . . It’s About The MusicIn 1971 the band recorded their first self-titled lP “Foghat”.
Their hard work has thus far been rewarded with seven Gold re-cords, one Platinum record “Fool For The City” (1975), and one Double-Platinum record “Foghat live” (1977). The “Fool For The City” album contained Foghat’s trademark Top 40 hit song “Slow Ride” and cemented their place as one of the world’s top rock acts. They continued to hit the charts in the 1970’s with singles such as “Fool For The City”, “Drivin’ Wheel”, “I Just Wanna Make love To you”, “I’ll Be Standing By”, “Stone Blue”, “Third Time lucky” and “Somebody’s Been Sleeping In My Bed”… many of which are still classic rock radio staples.

The group toured extensively doing what they love to do and do best…taking their music to the fans. The camaraderie and fun is apparent in their live performances. The band wrote and recorded a new studio album called “Family Joules”, released in 2003 which again received great reviews. If anyone ever dared to ask if Foghat were still relevant, surely the track “Mumbo Jumbo” gave a resounding yES!
The last few years has Foghat reach-ing a whole new generation of fans largely as a result of their incessant touring and also due to its songs appearing on such popular home video games as Guitar Hero III, numerous movies such as ‘Dazed & Confused’, ‘Wild Hogs’, ‘Bottle Shock’ and ‘Halloween II’, numerous TV shows and ads such as Honda among others.
So the live dates continue to pile up and the boogie continues. And to keep the band relevant to both old and new fans alike, 2010 brings the inclusion of a newer Foghat song “Mumbo Jumbo” in the new I-Phone application by Universal called ‘Six String’
Their latest project, a blues CD called “lAST TRAIN HOME” (release date June 15, 2010) is the culmination of a dream shared by Roger Earl and lonesome Dave. So with lAST TRAIN HOME Foghat comes full circle, with an offering that mixes some Foghat Blues stamped originals with many blues gems. This album is guaranteed to become a classic.
Foghat has never stopped touring and recording. The 2010 version of Foghat comprised of Roger Earl, Craig MacGregor, Charlie Huhn, and Bryan Bassett has been together for 10 years. They continue to

tour relentlessly because they just love to play and after every show they go out to meet their fans. They stil l epi tomize that c lass ic b lues-rock slide guitar sound and that is what Foghat is all about.

Who are the Ladies of the Rolling Pin?
Sunday, July 22 ~ 4PM Field TentThe ladies of the Rolling Pin are one of only a few women’s
Border Morris dance teams. They have been stirring things up in Rhode Island, since 1998, with just the right mix of leavening and levity. They never fail to get a rise out of audiences with their well-seasoned style, energy and music.
The team has performed at weddings, fairs and festivals, including the New England Folk Festival (NEFFA), Providence Waterfire, First Night Providence, Meadowbrook Waldorf Holiday Faire, Twelfth Night Peasants’ Feast, and the South County Hot Air Balloon Festival.
A morris dance is a form of English folk dance usually accompa-nied by music. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Implements such as sticks, swords, handkerchiefs and in this case rolling pins may also be wielded by the dancers.
Come dance with them at the Heritage Festival.Stop your loafin’, get off your buns and go see the Ladies of the Rolling Pin. Forget ‘flower power.’ These wild women have ‘flour
power’. Don’t miss ‘em. says Musical Baker’s Monthly.
Morris dancing from the Cotswolds in southwest England was traditionally done during the springtime to awaken the sleeping earth from its winter slumber. In the Welsh border area, Morris dancing traditionally happened around Christmas time and the dancers would raise a substantial amount of extra money by pass-ing a hat. In many cases, this made the difference between a good Christmas and a poor one.
No Coolers AllowedThose attending the Heritage Festival are reminded that
no coolers or containers are allowed on the festival grounds. Anyone bringing coolers will have them confiscated at the gates for pick-up at the ticket window when leaving the premises.
Please Use Litter BarrelsThe Heritage Festival Staff includes hard-working clean-up
crews to make the event enjoyable for all. Please use the litter barrels conveniently placed throughout the festival grounds to help them in their task. Special recycling containers are also placed on the grounds for cans and bottles.
Stadium Closed For Sound ChecksThere will be no admittance to Pierce Stadium on Saturday and
Sunday until sound checks by guest artists have been completed. The stadium gates will open in plenty of time for those wanting to sit on the football field to get their favorite spot. Seating is also available on both sides of the field in the bleacher seats.

Rumford Lions Clamcakes & Chowder
A Yearly TraditionThere’s nothing more “Rhode Island”
than Clam Cakes and Chowder, and noth-ing more traditional at the East Providence Heritage Festival, then the Rumford lions Club booth serving that popular treat.
The club has been at every festival since 1981, serving its homemade chowder and clam cakes. This year the club will again return to its location inside the baseball field, leading off the food booths.
The Rumford lions are a Heritage Fes-tival favorite, too, back each year, not only with good food, but lots of fun as many members, familiar faces in the community, chat with passersby. The booth features the club’s special recipe for New England clam chowder and clam cakes.
lions Club members staff the booth for the four days of the festival, making the chowder and mixing batter throughout the day.
The club has helped thousands of East Providence residents over the years through its many charities, as well as people all over the world with lions Club programs in pro-viding free glasses and eye care.
locally the club presents scholarships annually to deserving students in the com-munity as another charitable effort.
