THE 2017-2018 SHELTER INSURANCE FOUNDATION SUCCESS GRANT 2017-2018 GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION FORM BACKGROUND In 2016, the City of Columbia adopted a strategic plan with five priorities: social equity, public safety, economy, infrastructure, and operational excellence. The idea is, if resources are focused on these priorities, citizens’ lives will be affected in a positive way. The plan provides strategic direction to combine City resources in specific geographic areas that need more investment. The Shelter Insurance Foundation Success Grant was created as an opportunity for you, as a high school senior, to serve these neighborhoods and to ease the financial burden of continuing your education. Along with the ability to obtain and maintain employment, research has shown that graduating high school and attending post-secondary education significantly increase your potential to become self-supporting and fulfill personal and professional goals. The Success Grant is a partnership between the City and Shelter Insurance Foundation. OVERVIEW The Shelter Insurance Foundation Success Grant: Is intended to help students with financial need, high character and a passion to make their neighborhoods safer and more vibrant Is intended to initiate positive neighborhood interaction by challenging you to create a neighborhood project while being mentored by a City staff member Will give an annual $1,000 grant to the two- or four-year accredited college, university or career/technical school of your choice and shall be renewable for up to four years (contingent on conditions outlined in the grant contract upon receipt of award) Can be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, housing and books Three Success Grants will be awarded in 2018 to applicants who live in or who have strong connections to areas known as the Central, North and East neighborhoods and the Paris/63 Corridor (see maps at the end of this application). Each area needs strategic social investments. ®

2017-2018 GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION FORM

BACKGROUND In 2016, the City of Columbia adopted a strategic plan with five priorities: social equity, public safety, economy, infrastructure, and operational excellence.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICE PROJECT

What’s the point of the neighborhood service project? Mekhia Thompson, a Battle High graduate and winner of the first Success Grant in 2017, hosted a block party in the East Neighborhood last summer. In her words:

“My proposal to get the community in my neighborhood more involved with one another is to have a block party…I know that in the Rice Road area, there’s a variety of kids…and I want to do something that would involve their interests…If we had law enforcement or City officials out being involved then I believe that would break down assumptions and stereotypes of authority figures in our society.”

Stop and look around your neighborhood. Talk to the people who live there. Do they think the neighborhood is a good place to live? What do they think would make it better, and what kind of project would you plan to help them? Your project should address one or more of the areas below.

v Neighborhood safety, involving Columbia Police or Firefighters

v Neighborhood activities, like clean-ups, block parties, arts and music events, programs for kids

v Physical activity, healthy eating and healthy living

v Energy conservation and education

v Housing repairs or help with lawns and chores

The City of Columbia is your local government. It provides many services in your neighborhood, including streets and sidewalks; water, electric, and sewer service; police and fire protection; parks; trash pickup; the City bus; and others. Your neighborhood is where you grow up. It belongs to you. If you see a problem in your neighborhood, YOU have an opportunity to lead a project that helps your family and others who live around you. YOU have an opportunity to work with a team that you select to influence local government actions and make a lasting difference. Tips on how to present your neighborhood service project 1. Sell your idea. Prepare a project proposal with the following information.

a. Why you think you are a good candidate to receive a Success Grant

b. A description of your project

i. What you plan to do and the area where you plan to do it

ii. People you would involve (family, friends, neighbors, mentors, businesses, etc.)

iii. How you will use the knowledge and skills of people who live in the area

iv. Tools, supplies, funds and other things you will need to make the project succeed

v. What you plan to achieve and how your project will help your neighborhood, including an outline with

measurable milestones or benchmarks

A note to student families, guardians and counselors As Success Grant sponsors, we know that the cost of higher education and career training far exceeds the award we offer. Still, we believe that any amount that helps ease the financial burden on families and contributes to a student’s well-being is worth considering. We also believe this grant comes with unique benefits reflecting a commitment to public service, community life and career preparation. For Students

v Application of and experience with time management, budgeting and resource allocation v Confidence-building through leadership and problem-solving v Mentorship experience with a City staff member v Hands-on experience with City professionals with many skills and backgrounds v Attractive addition to the student’s resume

For the Community

v Ability to engage students as future leaders v Cultivates future employees and community members for continued development v Community can provide more leadership, input and support for grass-roots investments v Improves City of Columbia’s ability to invest resources in defined areas
