Welcome to the Giles Art Department Fusion magazine careers special edition.

Fusion is a magazine started last term to celebrate students work, this special

careers addition is a guide to the options available for you to study starting in year

9 next year.

You will find additional information about our subjects and all subjects on the

Giles academy website. We are very proud of the courses that we offer and the

facilities that we have and the ambition that we share with our students to enable

them to reach their full creative potential.

The Giles Academy Art and Design department offers GCSE courses in Art and Design, Graphic Design and Photography.

All of these courses art taught in the Art Block by specialist art and design teachers. You will be studying in one of the largest art building in the Lincolnshire with all of the specialist equipment that you need to study these subjects up to GCSE and beyond onto the Sixth Form.

Before choosing your Art and Design course you are advised to discuss the different courses with your art teacher to make sure that you understand what each course offers. You also look at the work displayed in the gallery area of the department.

Restrictions

There are restrictions on the course combinations that you can choose, these restrictions are not imposed by the Giles Academy but by the Qualifications Authority.

The rules of combination are as follows:

Art

Art and Design covers many areas and if you want to develop your skills in Art and Design to a greater depth, learn about the work of artists, the arts industries, and expand your creativity and imagination then you will enjoy the Edexcel GCSE Art and Design course. The possibilities are endless.

The course will include an in depth study into Drawing, Painting, printmaking and Sculpture. As the course develops you will be given more freedom to develop your own work and students may be able to specialise in Year 11 in one or more of these areas of study.

The Art Department has a professional standard photographic studio for students to use including studio lights, backdrops and props. The Art Department has over 40 digital cameras for student use, including state of the art DSLR cameras.

The Art Department also has professional standard printmaking equipment

Painting as an art form has been around for centuries, with many areas covered including

portraiture, landscape painting, murals, abstract art and contemporary street art. Sculpture is one of

the oldest art forms known to man and takes many forms, including human, animal and abstract

sculptures, and studio ceramics such as vases. The emphasis of this area of study is to develop your

3D sculpture skills through drawing, developmental work and the use of clay, mixed media,

chicken wire, etc.

This course can lead onto all of the Sixth Form art courses that the school offers, and from there

onto university studies.

A new GCSE Art course for those students who have an interest in Performing Arts and traditional

model making and stop motion animation. Working on school productions and gallery and

performance visits. This subject will lead to a range of Art and Design courses in the sixth form

and is a unique course only offered by the Giles Academy that will include the following areas of

study: Theatre design and set making – designing stage sets and props for school performances.

Stage Make Up – creating and applying the make-up for school productions. Puppets and

Animation – creating your own puppets and sets for a performance, including shadow puppets and

traditional puppets and creating a stop motion animation.

What will I study each year?

Y9 Introduction to theatre design and set making and then designing stage sets and props for the

school Christmas pantomime and the summer whole school production. Stage Make Up – creating

and applying the make-up for the school Christmas Pantomime. Introduction to puppet making and

basic stop motion animation.

Y10 Complete full scale puppet and stop motion animation project. Completing theatre design

and set making for the summer whole school production.

Y11 Individual GCSE Coursework project using skill and ideas experienced during the course.

The GCSE Examination project starts in January of Year 11.

The final mark is made up of 60% Coursework and 40% Examination completed during a 10 hour

examination at the end of the course.

Combined Arts (GCSE Art, Craft and Design)

Photography

Photography is an important Art and Design area, with Photography being used in a wide range of industries and including Portraiture, Fashion Photography, Advertising and Fine Art work.

The Art Department now has a professional standard photographic studio for students to use including studio lights, backdrops and props.

The Art Department has over 40 digital cameras for student use, including state of the art DSLR cameras.

All students who choose this option will study Edexcel GCSE Art and Design (Photography) course. This includes the production of both coursework and an external examination.

This course is taught using the latest PC computers and industry standard applications including Photoshop.

Those students who do very well during the course and are willing to do extra work also have the opportunity to complete an Edexcel GCSE in Art and Design (Digital Graphics).

This course can lead onto all of the Sixth Form art courses that the school offers, and from there onto university studies.

Graphic Design

Graphic Design is one of the most important art forms, surrounding us every day through posters, packaging and advertising, both in magazines, on TV and the internet.

The Art Department now has a professional standard photographic studio for students to use including studio lights, backdrops and props.

The Art Department has over 40 digital cameras for student use, including state of the art DSLR cameras.

The Art Department also has professional standard printmaking equipment

The Graphics course is taught by the Art and Design department. This course will include learning drawing, design and realisation skills, the use of Photoshop and computer image making, and the creation of 3D graphic products. You will have the opportunity of working on ‘real’ Graphic Design projects for the school and outside organisations. Graffiti Art is a new area of study within the subject that involves larger scale stencil art and spray paint.

Graphics is taught leading to an Edexcel GCSE Art and Design (Graphics) qualification.

As the course develops you will be given more freedom to develop your own work.

This course can lead onto all of the Sixth Form Graphic Design course that the school offers, and from there onto university studies.

BTEC Level 1/2 First Award in Music

Examination Board: Edexcel BTEC

Grades: Pass, Merit and Distinction

Introduction: This course will enable students to learn about the music industry, develop their

skills as a performer, participating in concerts and other events and work with other musicians to

develop ensemble skills.

What will I study each year?

Y9 Key Skills: theory (reading and writing notation) skills to Grade 1 ABRSM standard,

developing performance confidence, opportunity to work with other musicians and researching

careers.

Y10 Unit 1: Individual Showcase – external examination – working on learning about the

industry and developing solo performance skills. Unit 5: Introducing Music Performance – focus

on improving performance skills to enable formal performances in concerts and at other events.

Y11 Unit 6: Introducing Music Recording – gaining an understanding of recording techniques

and developing the ability to record music of other performers Unit 2: Managing a Music Product

– working as a business team to create an organisation to create and produce our in house music

competition: Music Masters.

How will my work be assessed? Unit 2, Unit 5 and Unit 6 will be assessed internally as

coursework, Unit 1 will be a controlled assessment and this will be assessed externally. There

will be a paper based exam for Unit 1.

Why study Music?

You should study Music if you have a genuine interest in improving your ability to perform on an

instrument and/or explore more about different genres of music. In addition to performing you

may want to consider songwriting and sound recording and this course will give you experience

in those areas. It is hoped that you will embrace the stage to perform throughout some part of

Extra-curriculum activities

There are music clubs available to support the learning taking place in the Key Stage 4 classroom.

Choir, Samba groups and Pop/Rock ensembles are available weekly. There is also the opportunity

to develop further technical skills on your instrument by engaging in 1:1 tuition offered in the

school at a subsidised rate. Theory club can be offered in small groups to aid the understanding of

reading and writing music. We have strong links to Access to Music – Higher Education in

Lincoln where we hope to attend in order to focus on recording skills and performing to be

recorded. We also encourage able performers to participate in opportunities offered by

Lincolnshire Music Service for example; Boston Youth Jazz Orchestra and Boston Youth Pop

Choir.

Qualification: The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Performing Arts (Musical

Theatre)

Grades: Level 1 Pass/ Merit Level 2 Pass/ Merit/ Distinction

Introduction: This course gives students a good understanding of all three disciplines of dance,

drama and singing. It is a good starting point for students who wish to progress on to Level 3 in

sixth form.

What will I study each year?

Y9 Developing basic Musical Theatre skills in all three disciplines (Acting/Singing/Dance).

Y10 Component 1 and 2 Exploring the Performing Arts & Developing skills and techniques in

Performing Arts.

Y11 Component 3 Performing to a Brief

Components 1 and 2 are internally assessed and component 3 is and external exam.

perform. Students have had the opportunity to work with outside practitioners, whole school

productions and take part in theatre visits. Current students are also taking part in the arts mark

award.

What would this subject enable me to do when I finish school? / Career Paths

Students usually progress on to Level 3 in Sixth Form. A number of our students have

progressed to stage schools such as Wilkes Academy, Stella Mann, Stage Works, MADD and

Masters to name a few, on the completion of their courses.

Media

Qualification: Cambridge National Certificate in Creative iMedia

Tiers: Level 1 and Level 2

Grades: Equivalent to 1 GCSE

Introduction Our Media course includes the study of film, television, web

development, gaming and animation, and all have the use of IT at their heart.

It provides knowledge in a number of key areas from pre-production skills to digital

animation and has a motivating, hands-on approach to both teaching and learning. It

aims to deliver skills across the whole range of learning styles and abilities, effectively

engaging and inspiring all students to achieve great things.

The Media Department is well resourced and uses Mac and PC based computer

systems to produce our content. We have good range of digital cameras and related

equipment.

What will I study each year?

Y9 Web Development and Pre-Production

Y10 Digital Animation and Digital Graphics

Y11 Creating a movie trailers

How will my work be assessed?

25% of the course is assessed by external examination. The remaining 75% is

internally assessed and moderated by the exam board.

Extra-curriculum activities/Trips -We are regular visitors to Lincoln University and try

and attend sector specific conferences and attractions where possible.

What would this subject enable me to do when I finish school? This course can lead

onto all of the Sixth Form course that the school offers, and in particular our Media

pathway. Many of our students go on to study Media related courses at University.

We are pleased to announce that the Giles Academy

has achieved the newly re-launched Artsmark Gold Award. This award is recognition

of the exciting arts activities that take place in the school, activities that include art and

design, photography, graphic design, performing arts, dance, acting, music and media.

The award also relates to the cultural activities that also take place in school, including

an appreciation of film, literature, and the importance of the arts in general learning

throughout the curriculum.

The school has now started to offer the Arts Award to students. This is an arts

qualification for those students who are involved in any form of art, they log their

activities and this can lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award.

Boston Illuminate workshop

Year 8 and Year 7 Bronze Arts Award student spent all day on Friday 10 November building lanterns in the shape of boats for the Boston Illuminate procession that takes place on Thursday 23 November. The students worked with Transported artists Ruth and Nadia, and another Transported artist called Lauren Sharpe. Lauren is an ex-pupil of the Giles who left over 4 years ago to study Fine Art at Lincoln University. The workshop was excellent and we hope that any people will come and support our students at the event next week. The Giles Art department Charter of the Forest exhibition at the Chapter House of Lincoln Cathedral has come to an end. The exhibition coincided with the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Charter of the Forest and formed part of the Cathedrals celebrations to mark this anniversary. It was a great privilege for our school to exhibit in such a prestigious place, and the exhibition has been warmly received and seen by hundreds of people. The display coincided with the Remembrance weekend, one of the busiest for the Cathedral.
