We will ordain three brand-new deacons on Sunday, January 31st: Robert Bridgforth, Jon Dalton & Joy Wood. Because we cannot do our normal practice safely, we are asking you to offer written blessings this year.

These can be a short personal word of encouragement, a prayer or a special scripture. You can email your blessings to the church office or fill out the slips in last week’s newsletter and return them to the church in-person or by mail. READ THE NEW TESTAMENT IN 2021 Weekly Readings:

Week of January 24: Matthew 11-15 Week of January 31: Matthew 16-20

From this week’s reading: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11: 28-30 Our weekday children’s Bible Study, What’s in the Bible?, will resume on Feb. 9 (1st- 4th grade) and Feb. 10 (5th & 6th grade.) New participants are welcome! Interested but can’t attend in person? Ask to be added to our email list to receive the lessons at home. Contact Jennifer for more information.

“What is truth?”, Pontius Pilate, Roman Governor of Judea, asked Jesus (John 18:38). The Jewish authorities had told Pilate that Jesus was a criminal who deserved to be put to death, but in Pilate’s assessment of the facts, Jesus had done no wrong. What for Jesus’s accusers was a grave religious infraction, was of little concern in the eyes of Roman jurisprudence. Because they persisted, Pilate went along, but not before questioning Jesus. “Are you the king of the Jews (18:33)?” If Jesus claimed to be king, he would have contradicted the inviolable truth that there was no king but Caesar. Jesus did say “yes,” but his understanding of what it meant to be a king was incomprehensible to Pilate. “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here (18:36).” Pilate was flabbergasted. He asked again, “So you are a king?” Jesus replied, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice(18:37).” This is a story of three competing claims on the truth. As Jesus hung on the cross, the truth of the accusations against Jesus and the truth of Roman power seemed to be validated. But hiding in plain sight was the ultimate truth that would be revealed in Jesus’s resurrection: Jesus was fully human and fully divine in life, would be raised up to conquer death, and would ascend to reign at the right hand of the Father. Despite all evidence to the contrary, Jesus was who he said he was,“the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)” “What is truth?” In the competing truth claims of our time, Pilate’s question has become our own. Even those of us who look to Jesus for the truth, can’t always agree on the facts. We don’t know who or what to believe. We want Jesus to have ultimate authority in our lives, but we don’t know how to discern his voice among the cacophony of voices all around us. In another story from the beginning of Jesus’s ministry, the crowds were astounded by Jesus’s teaching because unlike others who spoke to them about what was true, Jesus taught, “as one having authority (Mark 1:22).” In worship we will talk about what makes Jesus’s teaching authoritative and how we might discern who and what to call authoritative today.

See you Sunday, Drew
