Fellow Redeemed,

Summer is over (but not the heat/humidity!). The tax-free week-end is gone. Family vacations have come to an end. For the school-aged,

carefree days are a thing of the past (boo!). The end of August and the beginning of September mark a pattern change in the lives of many.

It’s my sincere hope and prayer that September brings with it a spiritual pattern change in the lives of many. Specifically those whom

the Lord has not seen in Sunday worship over the summer. In John 4, Jesus says, “For the Father is seeking people to worship Him.”

Our Lord God in His grace is calling all of us to the blessings of worship. In our corporate time together on Sunday mornings that Gra-cious Heavenly Father:

• Reminds you of your status as His baptized child through

the words of the Invocation

• Declares once again His forgiveness of your self-centered attitudes and

actions, through the death and resurrection of Jesus as you hear the

words of Absolution

• Reveals His love for your life as you listen to the Scripture lessons and

the Instruction in His Word

• Strengthens your faith with the assurance of his Presence through the

Body and the Blood of your Savior

• Sends you as a servant and a witness to His grace in your daily

discipleship with His benediction

No one among us does not need to receive from the heart of our Lord God these His blessings! He seeks us to bless us! He calls us to grace us! Why would we even hesitate to absent ourselves from such gifts divine?

The Holy Spirit implores us in Hebrews10: “Let us not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing.” If your summer Sunday habit included taking a vacation from receiving the Lord’s blessings through not meeting together with your fellow members, Your Lord God is informing you that summer is officially over!

Do yourself (your children/grandchildren/your family members) a favor with eternal ramifications: develop the godly habit of weekly worship. Establish a pattern change from the past. Allow your Lord God to do what He desires for you: to bless you with His grace and favor. See you Sunday!

Preschool News

Another school year is underway and our preschool is off to a won-derful start! We wish to welcome back our returning students, par-ents and staff and extend a special welcome to our new students and parents. We also want to warmly welcome Allie McFarland, our new teacher’s assistant in the Blue Room. We are all looking forward to a

year of fun and learning! We would like to give special thanks to the following church members that helped us get our preschool ready for this new school year:

Pastor G and the members of the Wednesday Morning Bible Study for

moving furniture and equipment in and out of the classrooms so the

preschool floors could be stripped and waxed.

Tom Windsor, Mike Mekelburg and Don Gillett for replacing the weathered

platform under the preschool’s shed on the playground.

Tom Windsor for doing touch-up painting in the classrooms and the pre-

school hallway and for making numerous repairs in the classrooms and

on the playground.

Thank you all so much! Your help and support is truly appreciated!

Fundraising activities for the preschool begin this month. Our annual Used Book Sale begins September 23rd and runs until September 30th. Your donations of books for children and adults for our sale are needed and would be greatly appreciated. All donations can be left outside the Preschool Office in the Ministry Center. We will also again be selling Enjoy the City Books beginning September 16th. These books offer hundreds of savings offers and money-off coupons for MANY establishments in the Tampa Bay area. These books are $20.00 and the preschool earns 50% of the total sales. We appreciate your support of our fundraising events. Thrivent Finan-cial for Lutherans is partnering with us by providing matching funds which will help provide educational materials for our classrooms.

Call Committee Update

President Walton's Visit - On Tuesday, September 10, FL-GA District President Rev. Greg Walton and our church's circuit counselor, Rev. Kevin Yoakum, will be meeting with Messiah's officers, board directors, and elders at the monthly Parish Planning Council meeting. President Walton will be discussing our church body's process for evaluating our ministry and calling a pastor. This meeting will "officially" begin our Call Committee and process. While Rev. Walton will be involved in the proc-ess of calling a pastor, Rev. Yoakum will be assisting us through the vari-ous stages.

Call Committee - Messiah's constitution and by-laws state that a call committee will be comprised of the President, the Board of Elders, and others as determined by the President. We would like to have members on the committee that represent the diversity of Messiah, yet balanced with not being too large to effectively do the job. Following the meeting with President Walton we will be looking at how this can best be achieved. Call Committee members selected so far include: Joel Mathews, President; Wayne Jackson, Vice President; John Dufresne and Mike Mekelburg, Elders; Walt Halfmann and Mike Parnow, members; Abby Moss, staff.

Prayers - As we begin the process of calling a new shepherd for Messiah please keep the Call Committe and the call process in your prayers, seeking God's guidance through the Holy Spirit, and his blessing on the ministry of Messiah. We also continue to keep Pastor Guelzow in our prayers, giving thanks and praise to God for Pastor's 30 years of service to Messiah, and asking his continued blessings upon our beloved Pastor's ministry.

Hispanic Ministry ~ Selling Cuban Sandwiches ~ The Hispanic Ministry at Messiah

will be offering Cuban sandwiches on Sunday, September 8th. Be sure to stop by the table after each service to take home your Cuban sandwiches.

This is for the purpose of raising funds to provide Christmas gifts for the children. Thank you for your blessings!

Adult Inquirers’ Class - If you are interested in becoming a member of Messiah Lutheran Church or just want to learn more about what we as Lutheran Christians believe, teach and confess, Messiah is offering a 5 week Inquirer’s class beginning Wednesday, September 11th, 6:45 – 7:45 pm. We will meet in the Ministry Center upstairs classroom #202 through Wednesday, October 23rd. The class will be taught by Mark Lemke.

A New Member Orientation class for all who desire to join Messiah including by transfer or reaffirmation of faith, will be held Wednesday, October 16th, 6:45 p.m. in that classroom #202. New Member Sunday is scheduled for October 27th. Anyone that is interested in helping please let Kim Capsas know. We especially need help with set up on December 19/20/21--ladies can help fluff trees and help string lights, there are lots of props and scenery to carry downstairs and of course the shop set up...please let Kim know at capsas@verizon.net, or call me at 598-8160 or text, facebook. Youth are needed to help out in shops, and tear down/clean up which will likely be done on the 27/28/29. The Memorial Garden Trustees continues moving forward with the next phase of the Garden and Prayer Walk project and will proceed as resources allow. We look forward to the arrival of the custom designed, metal memorial plates

for attachment to the Wittenberg Memorial Arch. Messiah members may contact any Trustee, as listed below, to pre-arrange a columbarium niche or to obtain a metal plate in memory of a loved one(s). Followers Forever - The last Sunday September 1 to order your pizza, cones or cookie

dough. Orders must be completed by September 1st. The delivery pick-up date is Septem-

ber 13th at 4:00 pm at church. If you are unable to pick up your order at that time let us

know so we can make other arrangements. The funds will help supplement the cost of sen-

iors who want to go to the Senior Fest being held at our church for churches and commu-

Women of Messiah - LWML

We are making a few changes to our women's group. First of all, we will not be meeting monthly. We will meet every other month with some functions in

between. The morning group will be meeting on the second Tuesday of the month so we will be able to get things put in the newsletter before the deadlines. We have also changed our meeting time to 10:30 in the morning. We are not sure what will be happen-ing with the evening group but for now we will continue to meet on the third Thursday eve-ning at 7:30. We will also meet every other month. We hope more ladies will come to our meetings and also help out with our projects and activities. Basically we are a group of Christian women who enjoy working for the Lord and enjoy the fellowship of other sisters in Christ. We continue to be a part of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and of course collect our mites for the mission projects supported by the LWML. We have not met in the summer, so we are now ready to start our year in September with our first meeting on Tuesday, September 10 at 10:30 a.m. in the CLC conference room. We will be collecting diapers for the Pregnancy Center. Coupons will be available in the narthex on the LWML cart. Be sure to pick one up before you purchase your dia-pers. The evening group will meet on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 in room 202 of the min-istry center. The evening group will also be collecting diapers. If you can't make it to one of the meetings but would still like to donate diapers please place them on the LWML cart in the narthex. We will continue hosting the coffee and cookies on the second Sunday of the month after early service. If you can help out by baking some cookies or serving please contact Polly Riffel. We hope to see you at one of meetings in September. All ladies are invited and wel-come.

Let’s do a Bible drive for the incarcerated! Thanks to

God moving one of our members to donate some books to a local jail, we have established a relationship with the Falkenburg Rd Jail chaplain, and discovered they are in desperate need of Bibles and other uplifting books. They don’t have a budget for Bibles, so whatever we can provide is much appreciated (no secular books, please). Please place Bibles and devotions

in the marked box(es) in the narthex, no later than September 8, so we can have them there by mid Sep. Let’s share God’s precious Word with those who are in the darkest times of their lives, and shine the Light of the World. In Martin Luther’s introduction to the book of Romans he writes: “Faith cannot help doing good works constantly. It doesn’t stop to ask if good works ought to be done, but before anyone asks, it already has done them and continues to do them without ceasing.” Lutheran Services Florida is your social ministry outreach program. We bring God’s healing, hope, and help to people in need in the name of Jesus Christ in areas many of Florida Lutherans seldom go. Our philosophy focuses on providing an environment that fosters opportunities for young children to develop social skills of sharing, helping, and interacting with each

other with support of their parents and teachers. Ultimately, it is our objective that children see themselves as special individuals created and loved by God.

LIVE curriculum helps get your kids to actually read their Bi-bles... strengthen their Bible skills...and learn key Bible truths. Its large group/small group format is perfect for Sunday School. Group’s LIVE Children’s Curriculum is all about helping kids grow their friendships with Jesus. As they experience the Scrip-tures and do the activities, they’re building that relationship in a real and relevant way. With LIVE Children’s Curriculum, kids get into the Bible and the Bible gets into kids! And you’ll get into the Bible, too. Every week kids will explore God’s Word in large groups and small groups called Bible Crews. Worship and prayer will be responses to what they’ve learned.

September means back to school. What is also important is that you and your family come back to Sunday School. We started our new LIVE curriculum. LIVE is a continuing effort to enrich the Sun-day School class lessons to make the study of the Bible fun and exciting. Make plans to join us in Sunday School starting at 9:45 am. Make Sunday School and worship a family affair.

Kid Sit is back!

Our next event will be Saturday September 14 from

5-10PM in the Christian Life Center.

Children must be potty trained and between 3&10 years of age to

attend.

Since this is a fundraiser, we are going to encourage a specific

donation as well as an RSVP ahead of time (for food planning

purposes) but will not turn anyone away that cannot contribute at

our level or joins us last minute the night of (discounts available

for pre-registering).

Evening Schedule:

5PM-6:30PM Arrival Playground & Bike Riding Time

If you have a bike/trike and helmet you would like to bring from

home, we have a great open parking lot space for some riding. If

you prefer to leave the bike at home there will be plenty else to do.

From Abby… (Not to be confused with Dear Abby,) Can it really be the end of summer already? I don’t know where the time went but it is already September. The start of a new school year and a new season reminds me of Ecclesiastes 3:1-11.

“ There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to

kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a

time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a

time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time

to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to

tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a

time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What do workers gain from their

toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made every-

thing beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one

can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”

What season of life are you in? Are you in the start of school craziness? What about your life? Are you in a time of mourning or laughing? Is now a time to speak up or to remain silent and let God do the speaking and teaching?

As we start a new school year or face whatever is in our life at the moment we know that God goes with us. The most comforting part of this passage is that while we may not see the whole picture, God does. He has eternity in mind. Whether we are in a season or time of laughter or mourning God will use that time as a part of His grand plan and that He has eternity in mind. Even the difficult times can be used to draw us or someone else closer to Him.

From beginning to end God has a plan. I am reminded by this passage that some-times there isn’t an answer, sometimes there isn’t something that needs to be said, sometimes it is a time to be silent to as Psalm 46:10a says, “ Be still, and know that I am God.” In this busy time of year, I’m reminded to take in the time I am in as it won’t be this time and season forever, yet all of it has a purpose and a part in God’s great plan. All of it will teach me something and draw myself or others closer to Him and play a part in His grand and wondrous plan. Praise God that He sees the big picture and can work all things out for good.

Blessings to you in the new school year and whatever other time of life you are in.

Bithlo, Florida is a small, unincorporated town in East Orlando that has been plagued with poverty for generations. Contaminated water, no medical or dental services, lack of busi-ness, high rates of homelessness, teen pregnancy, and high school dropouts have been the norm for generations. The poverty level in Bithlo has been likened to a third-world country. The Big Day of Serving is partnering with United Global Outreach to make Transformation Village a reality for the community. Transformation Village will include a medical and dental clinic, hair salon, laundromat, school and sports field, and many other services to improve daily life for Bithlo residents.

This opportunity is open to youth 7th grade+. Cost is $20 for the day. Deadline to register is September 8. We can use several adults and drivers as well.

hasn’t turned in money yet. We will depart from Mes-siah at 4:30PM on Friday September 6th and return around 2AM Saturday morning. If you missed the deadline but would like to attend, we can look into

acquiring extra tickets (no guarantees).

High School Youth Late Night

Youth, join us Friday September 20th after the Steinbrenner @ Sickles football game (or your school’s football game) for a late night at Mes-siah. We’ll meet in the Ministry Center with snacks and just have an opportunity to hang out. Bring your friends starting

at 9:45PM (or after the game). We’ll wrap up around 12:30AM so everyone can drive home before curfew.

See You At The Pole

Attention Students! See You At the Pole is issuing a challenge to all students: to find as many times and places to pray the week of September 22-28. This will cul-minate with the school event Wednesday, September 25th at your school. This is a day set apart where students around the globe will gather at their school’s flag pole in a time of prayer. Join Christian youth around the world and support this move-ment by gathering at the flag pole at your school at ~ 7AM or an hour before school starts for this time of prayer. We challenge you to find multiple times, places, and things to pray for during the week and to join in a time of prayer with your school.
