From the Desk of Editor Issue 28; Spring 2014

It gives us immense pleasure to write a few words on the eve of publishing Southern News, Issue 28, 2014. It is an honest attempt from our end to keep our learners and well-wishers updated with our vision, mission and strategic plan.

Fall 2013 was one of the historical semesters for the country as well as for Southern University Bangladesh. Admission procedure for spring 2014 have delayed, Classes and examinations were disrupted due to oppositions blockades and strikes for non political neutral care taker government. All academic and co-curricular activities were affected for political turmoil. But we have managed and completed all classes and examinations. Thanks go to Southern University Faculty & staffs for their dedication.

It is very unfortunate that, after 43 years of independence, we are fighting among us, fighting to grab, and fighting for self interest in the name of people and democracy, though we do not practice democracy in our party nor in legislative, executive or in judicial .

43 years may feel long time, but for democracy, it is a transition period. As a sovereign country we must be patriotic to land of soil. It may take nine months for Independence but cost lot. If we do not wake up and keep fighting within us our freedom may jeopardize. We must provide a supportive and positive democratic environment. Everyone has a unique opportunity to contribute for sacrifice. Many Bangladeshis will have reflected on the contrast between the fortunate life in this country and the struggle for existence that confronts them. At this time of rapid changing world, we must have strong unity and patriotism for our beloved country where we live. As a nation and as individuals, we have the capacity – to build Bangladesh a much better place. Opportunities to do so abound among the challenges.

Wishing you all good health, peace and happiness in the Year 2014.

With regards,

Seminar on “Fly-ash based geo-polymer: an alternative low emission binder for

concrete” held at SUB

A seminar entitled “Fly-ash based geo-polymer: an alternative low emission binder for concrete” was held on December 2013 at Southern University Bangladesh. Engineer Dr. Prabir Sarkar from Curtin University, Western Australia, was the keynote speaker while the program was presided over by Professor Engr.M.Ali Ashraf, Head, Department of Civil Engineering, Dr.Sarkar emphasized that fly-ash based geo-polymer can become a low cost alternative to Portland Cement in the production of concrete. He further said that Fly-ash based geo-polymer would be the cement of tomorrow which would reduce the emission of Carbon Di-Oxide by about seven percent even if we considered only the present consumption of cement, worldwide. In the address as the chairman of the seminar, Prof. Engr.Ali Ashraf said, “use of cement is increasing globally. It is expected to be doubled within the next twenty years. It may be good news in terms of economic development but it is a bad news in consideration of pollution. Each ton of cement produced contributes a ton of Carbon Di Oxide to our atmosphere. Government of Bangladesh is building several coal based power plant which will produce fly-ash as waste. If this fly-ash can be utilized in producing geo-polymer, Bangladesh will get cement for development at a very low cost. Since emission of Carbon Di-Oxide is very low in producing geo-polymer, Bangladesh, even with increased development in the coming years, will produce very low amount of Carbon Di oxide; the main contributor to the phenomenon of global warming”. The seminar was followed by a lively question and answer session where practicing engineers, faculty members and the civil engineering students participated.

Higher Education opportunity Higher Education opportunity for every interested individual is one of the TEN UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED PRINCIPLES of United Nations. The challenge to universities admission has created a prominent stage for educational leadership to emerge within selective colleges and universities throughout the country. Institutional stakeholders who truly care about making a difference for education beyond their own institutions can distinguish themselves by serving as leaders on this stage. Higher Education opportunity creating University admissions process that better demonstrate educational values and contributes more directly to the nation’s public interests will require courage, imagination, and commitment. Education is ready for a truly altered mindset in the leadership of higher education institutions. It will be necessary to hold in abeyance some of the spirit that conceives of success in admissions as prevailing over the competition. Government must come to view the admissions process from a perspective beyond the traditional attitude. Institutional stakeholders will need to rise to the challenge of identifying their individual and collective obligations. In taking appropriate steps, Higher Education opportunity for every interested individual can make important strides in shaping the nation’s class for the decades ahead without any discrimination.
