For the Corpus Christi Hooks, the future of the Houston Astros has arrived to help ease memories of the

recent past.

Earlier this year, the Hooks endured a 17-game losing streak. But now, Corpus Christi has been recharged

by a handful of players from the Class A levels. While they aren't exactly burning up the Texas League

South Division at six games back, the Hooks aren't yet eliminated and have at least put their epic skid

squarely in the rear view.

Corner outfielder J.D. Martinez, second baseman/leadoff man Albert Cartwright and outfielder/designated

hitter Freddy Parejo have come along to add extra life to the lineup. Since the final loss of their streak, a

12-6 setback against Tulsa on July 10, the Hooks have won seven of 11 series and split another.

"There's some new energy," manager Wes Clements said. "J.D. has made an impact in the middle of the

lineup, and Cart has done that at the top of the lineup, and he's played a very good second base, as well."

The worst blot on the Hooks' record since the 17-game slide came last week when they were swept by

Springfield in a three-game series, which became a four-game skid with an 8-3 loss to Arkansas on

Saturday.

But a four-game slide is nothing to a team that has suffered like Corpus Christi. And after beating

Arkansas, 10-2, on Sunday, the Hooks had a chance to win another series Monday night.

"It's kind of a credit to the whole club for not assuming this half was over," Clements said. "We have an

opportunity to still make the playoffs, and nobody would have believed it."

The Hooks were 36-33 when they lost to San Antonio, 3-0, on June 22 to end the first half 2 1/5 games

behind South champion Frisco.

Then 16 straight losses ensued. Two more were by shutout, seven were by one run -- with one of those

coming in 11 innings -- and the skid included a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Tulsa.

It wasn't as if the Hooks were without talent, though.

For starters, first baseman Koby Clemens battled Northwest Arkansas' Mike Moustakas throughout the

first half for the league lead in home runs and entered Monday tied with the Naturals' Clint Robinson at

24. Youthful pitcher Jordan Lyles may have gone 7-9, but he posted a 3.12 ERA before his promotion to

Triple-A.

Naturals' rotation highlights Royals' prospect depth

Three of organization's top young pitchers play for Northwest Arkansas.

Kary Booher • News-Leader • August 24, 2010

Springdale, Ark. --Trade publication Baseball America is considering a No. 1 ranking for the Kansas City

Royals' farm system, in part because of a ridiculously deep pool of legitimate prospects.

The Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals have carried many of them, mostly in a power-heavy batting

order.

But as the Naturals reach Hammons Field today for the opener of a four-game series against the

Springfield Cardinals, their rotation is suddenly a who's-who list featuring three quality left-handers.

One of the three, John Lamb, says the trio -- which also includes Mike Montgomery and Danny Duffy --

hasn't accomplished anything yet -- at least, not in the Texas League.

The Naturals punched their playoff ticket by winning the North Division's first half, but only

Montgomery was a part of it -- and a small part at that.

"We're not going to get that acknowledgement (of contributing) because we don't deserve it. We haven't

been here the whole time," Lamb said. "But we're going to try to help them win the championship. We

may not have gotten them there, but we're going to try to finish the job."

Such comments usually come from seasoned veterans and not a pitcher who only turned 20 last month.

But Lamb has a point.

A forearm strain sidelined Montgomery for almost two months; Duffy took a curious but brief sabbatical

to rediscover his love for the game; and Lamb has yet to show the consistent fastball command that

expedited his meteoric rise through two Class A levels.

Those issues appear only minor now, especially after Montgomery's dominating, seven scoreless innings

Friday.

In the broader picture, the trio represents the Royals' considerable pitching depth. The cupboard is still

healthy, despite the late-July demotion of 2009 first-round pick Aaron Crow from the Naturals to the high

Class A Carolina League.

That came at the time Montgomery, Lamb and Duffy joined the rotation.

View from the dugout: Former Mission has milestone day

Richard Oliver, Express News

Web Posted: 08/29/2010 12:00 CDT

Since being promoted from the Missions to Triple-A Portland in late June, Cedric Hunter hit .294 in his

first 54 games with the Beavers. But in that span, he had launched only one home run.

That changed in a big way Thursday night.

The Padres outfield prospect, a third-round draft pick in 2006, slammed two three-run homers as part of a

five-hit, eight-RBI showing in a 17-12 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers.

“You always want to have high standards,” Hunter told MLB.com after the performance. “You want to

picture yourself having a good day. But this was something else. It wasn't even the best (batting practice)

of my life. Sometimes something just clicks during the game, and you get locked in.”

Hunter, who came in with 10 hits in his previous 14 games, had an RBI double in the first inning to go

with the home runs in the second and ninth. He also had an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Road runner: UTSA headliner Casey Selsor, a former Reagan standout, just finished a summer stint with

the Valley Baseball League in Virginia.

Playing for Covington, Selsor pitched and played first base and the outfield in posting a .276 average,

with nine home runs and 36 RBIs in 105 at-bats. He also was 10 of 13 in steal attempts.

Lumbering: Former Texas State pitcher Josh Walter, 25, has scuffled this year in pitching for the Inland

Empire 66ers of the Class A Advanced California League. Walter, 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, is 1-8 with a

6.56 ERA.

The 2008 L.A. Dodgers free-agent signee has surrendered 11 home runs and 57 walks in 85 innings

pitched, including six homers and 38 walks over his past 502/3 innings.

Road bump: After a superb stretch that saw him emerge as one of the Cincinnati Reds' standout relievers,

left-hander Logan Ondrusek of Hallettsville weathered a tough stretch against the Giants this past week.

The right-hander, 25, surrendered seven runs over two innings on successive nights, lifting his ERA to

8.18 over his past 10 appearances.

Overall, Ondrusek is 3-0 with a 4.60 ERA, including 30 strikeouts in 43 innings thrown.

Steve Buechele managing well in minors

Posted Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010

By -- Drew Davison, Star Telegram

ARLINGTON -- In his first year managing at the Double A level, former Texas Rangers infielder Steve

Buechele has led the Frisco RoughRiders to the playoffs, winning the first-half championship.

Last year with Class A Bakersfield, in his managerial debut, Buechele led the Blaze to a 75-65 record and

a berth in the California League playoffs.

And, without even finishing his second year of managing professional baseball, Buechele is already being

mentioned as a potential big-league manager. Baseball America recently named Buechele the top

managerial prospect in the Texas League.

"I think I've found my niche," Buechele said. "I'm really enjoying managing right now and have had a

great time. Coming to Double A ball has been a pretty smooth adjustment. I had a lot of the same kids in

Bakersfield last year.

"But the ultimate goal in the minors is the development of the players. We've got to develop the players to

make the next jump. Still, at the same time, you want to instill a winning attitude throughout the system."

Player of the Week, August 23-29

IF-OF Andrew Brown, Springfield Cardinals

.438 AVG (7-for-16), 8 runs, 6 RBI, 4 XBHs, 4 HRs, 19 TBs, 6 BBs, 2 HBPs, .625 OBP, 1.188 SLG, 1.813 OPS

During a crucial week in the North Division pennant race, Andrew Brown, the Springfield Cardinals’

versatile right-handed slugger helped his club win four times in the six games he played in. During the

past week, he hit .438, slugged four home runs, and was on base 15 times in 24 trips to the plate. For

his efforts, Brown has been selected Player of the Week.

Brown, who has split his time between first base, third base, and rightfield in 2010, has been on fire in

July and August, during which he has hit .319, while mashing 12 of the 21 home runs he has hit this

season.

This past week, Brown led all Texas League hitters with a .625 on-base percentage, a 1.188 slugging

percentage, and a fabulous 1.813 OPS.

His best outings last week came in the final two games, 10-5 and 3-1 wins over Arkansas on Saturday

and Sunday. In the 10-5 blowout, Brown was 3-for-5 and stroked a pair of homers. The next day, he

was a perfect 2-for-2, with two walks, another home run, and two of the Cards’ three RBI’s.

This is Brown’s fourth professional season. The 25-year-old Dallas native was taken in the 18th round of

the 2007 draft by St. Louis after his junior year at the University of Nebraska.

Pitcher of the Week, August 23-29

LHP John Lamb, Northwest Arkansas Naturals

0.00 ERA, 1-0 (W-L), 1 GS, 6.1 innings pitched, 0 hits, 0 runs, 5 strikeouts, 3 walks, 0.47 WHIP

In just his fifth start in Double-A, 20-year-old Northwest Arkansas left-hander John Lamb was

spectacular, tossing 6 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball in a 6-1 Naturals’ win at Springfield, easily earning

Pitcher of the Week honors.

The start may be the turning point for Lamb, who blew through two Class-A leagues in 2010 before

being promoted to the Naturals in late July. After going a combined 8-6 with a 1.50 ERA, Lamb had

struggled in his four previous Texas League starts, giving up 19 hits and nine walks in just 17 innings.

The no-hit performance was his best outing of the season for Lamb, who was making his 26th start of the

season since beginning the season at Burlington of the Low-A Midwest League.

Lamb, who is rising quickly through the Kansas City system, was taken in the fifth round of the 2009

draft from Laguna Hills, CA High School.

Walking three and striking out five in his outing, Lamb very nearly set up a record performance for the

Naturals as Springfield did not get their first hit in the game until two were out in the bottom of the

ninth inning. Had the Naturals’ staff completed the no-no, it would have been the first in franchise

history.

coming in the sixth. Rightfielder Charlton Jimerson provided Arkansas’ other RBI with an inside-the-park home run

in the fifth inning. Designated hitter Efren Navarro and first baseman Abel Nieves each contributed a pair of hits

for the Travs.

Sunday, August 29: L, 3-1 @ Springfield

In a 3-1 loss, the Travs gave up a pair of home runs in the first inning, then trailed the rest of the way. The

After taking a 1-0 lead, Northwest Arkansas was bowled over by Tulsa, losing 8-4. Picking up the loss for the

Naturals, starter Danny Duffy (4-2) was roughed-up for five runs on seven hits in just 4 2/3 innings on the mound.

Drillers pull away from a rallying Northwest Arkansas team. With two runs in the second, fifth, and seventh

innings, Tulsa had control of the contest throughout. The offense was led by catcher Jordan Pacheco, who finished

the game 2-for-4, with four RBI’s, and first baseman Matt Repec, who also went 2-for-4, with a double and three

RBI’s. Shortstop Radames Nazerio contributed a 2-for-4 outing, with an RBI and a run scored, while designated

comeback, falling to three games back of first place and to a second-place tie with Springfield. Offensively,

inning. Only one other Frisco batter had a hit in the game, leftfielder Jonathon Greene, who stroked a single.

Starter Clayton Hamilton (1-0) picked up his first win for Frisco this season, after tossing seven scoreless innings,

a Frisco comeback that was sparked by designated hitter Emerson Frostad’s grand slam in the seventh inning that

gave the ‘Riders a 6-5 lead. After San Antonio tied the game with a run in the eighth, both teams settled in for the

long haul, with Frisco reliever Ben Snyder tossing shut-out ball from the ninth through the 12th, allowing just one

Missions responded with three runs in the second and two more in the third. First baseman Michael Collins

blasted a two-run home run to dead center in the third, while leftfielder Craig Cooper stroked a two-run single.

Third baseman James Darnell added an RBI double and a run scored to the fray. The loss was the Missions’ fifth in

leftfielder Craig Cooper, who laced an RBI double off his former college teammate, Corpus starter Dallas Keuchel.

San Antonio received a tremendous effort from starter Mark Hardy, who had just arrived in San Antonio from

Eugene, the Padres’ short-season club in the Northwest League. Hardy, who was starting in place of a recently-

promoted Simon Castro, allowed just two runs on four hits in his five innings of work. Perhaps even more

impressive was his work at the plate, where he was 2-for-2, with an RBI. Hardy was drafted this past June in the

43rd

round out of the University of British Columbia.

This Week in Texas League History, August 30-September 5

August 30, 1963 Austin Right hander Bruce Brubaker took maters into his own hands, pitching

and batting the Senators to a 2-0 win over Amarillo. Brubaker, who scattered

eight hits and struck out 11, drove in both of Austin’s runs with a fourth inning

home run.

August 31, 1975 Midland clinched their first Texas League division title with a 14-5 win over El

Paso. In the straight through season schedule, the Cubs overcame a 13 ½ game

lead by Shreveport to capture the West Division crowd on the day before the

season ended.

September 1, 1930 Houston hosted the first ever Texas League night doubleheader. After Waco

edged Houston 2-1 in the first game that needed just 80 minutes to complete,

the Buffs sent their fans home satisfied, winning the second contest 5-4.

September 2, 2001 In the final game of the regular season, Wichita’s Joe Caruso went 2-for-4 and

played all nine positions in the Wranglers 3-1 win over Tulsa. Caruso started the

game behind the plate, then went from left to right in the outfield through the

fourth inning. In the fifth through the eighth, Caruso played all the infield

positions, before going to the mound in the ninth, retiring the only batter he

faced. After getting Matt Halloran to fly out, Caruso left the game, receiving a

standing ovation from the 1,645 fans in attendance. Outfielder Brandon Berger

effectively won the game for the Wranglers with a two-run triple in the bottom

of the first.

September 3, 1951 Tulsa’s veteran skipper Al Vincent announced his resignation. In four seasons at

the helm of the Oilers, Vincent had a regular season record of 331-290, a

winning percentage of .533. Vincent led the Oilers to the championship round in

post-season play in each of his first three seasons in Tulsa, winning the league

championship in 1949.

September 4, 1924 Galveston rallied to a 15-8 win over Fort Worth when they scored eight runs in

the eighth inning. While George Whitemen was the hitting star for the winners

with a 4-for-5 effort, it was Fort Worth slugger Clarence Kraft who really

electrified the crowd. In the fifth inning, the Panthers slugger walloped a ball to

the deepest part of center field, racing around the bases with an inside the park

home run. It was Kraft’s 54th circuit clout of the season.

September 5, 1920 San Antonio won two games and lost one in an unusual “tripleheader” versus

Beaumont. Their first win was the resumption of a game played on August 24th

that league president J. Walter Morris ruled had been incorrectly forfeited to

Beaumont. Picking up the game in the ninth inning, San Antonio retired the

Exporters 1-2-3, preserving a 3-2 win. In the regularly scheduled twin-bill,

Beaumont won the first contest 8-3, while San Antonio took the five-inning

closing contest 3-2.
