INDUSTRIAL DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM COORDINATOR

The Industrial Distribution Program serves the wholesale distribution industry through competitive

advantage research conducted by the Global Supply Chain Laboratory, which then drives research-based

education. The process begins with the Master of Industrial Distribution where the research findings are

further implemented by distance based education students at their own firms. The Masters students further

the knowledge base through these applications further preparing it for our continuing education/professional

development programs. These programs serve as an acid test for the research based best practices since

participants must be able to apply them immediately. The final result is a powerful, cutting edge, relevant

application-based curriculum for our undergraduate students. In the process, we identify broad, important

new challenges that are driven back into our consortia and project based research.

INDUSTRY OUTREACH

The Industrial Distribution program was founded by industry and continues its focus with the distribution

community through its professional development programs that draw industry to the university, impact our

curriculum, and create opportunities for our students. Our large research consortia are co-sponsored by the National

Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW, the largest distribution association in the world with over 40,000

companies). Dr. Lawrence, as Director of the Global Supply Chain Laboratory (GSCL), has established the Council

for Research in Distributor Competitiveness at the NAW that conducts these large consortia with the GSCL. All

research goes through Texas A&M and educational programs like Pricing Optimization, Optimizing Distributor

Profitability, and Sales and Marketing Optimization are conducted by Dr. Lawrence and his colleagues. NAW

recognized Dr. Lawrence’s contribution fall 2010 making him a NAW Fellow, the first academic to receive this

honor. Both the research and the professional development programs are delivered worldwide and have resulted in

globalization classes being introduced at the undergraduate and graduate level.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS (developed and delivered by Dr. Lawrence in the last 5

years)

CERTIFICATE IN DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT: The Certificate in Distribution Management a Read

Center’s flagship program.

DISTRIBUTION ASSOCIATIONS & BUYING GROUPS: Distribution Associations and buying groups offer

specialized programs for their members firms that are developed together with researchers from the GSCL and

faculty working under Dr. Lawrence’s leadership.

COMPANY SPECIFIC PROGRAMS: Custom designed programs are designed through a collaborative effort using

company specific data to address unique business environment challenges with established GSCL research best

practices.

Page 6: Texas A&M University Engineering - Dr. F. Barry Lawrence · 2020-04-04 · Dr. F. Barry Lawrence Leonard and Valerie Bruce Chair Professor in Industrial Distribution Program Director,

PRICING OPTIMIZATION: The Pricing Optimization program is the result of a year-long GSCL intensive research

consortium. Extensive “hands on” materials and a book were developed during the research specifically to be used

in the educational programs.

Educational Materials Development: Customer Stratification & Pricing Framework

OPTIMIZING DISTRIBUTOR PROFITABILITY: The Optimizing Distributor Profitability consortium was developed to address how companies could capitalize on best practice adoption. The consortium developed a book and extensive education materials like the “Distributor Profitability Framework.”

Educational Materials Development: Book on Best Practices & Optimizing Distributor Profitability Map

SALES AND MARKETING OPTIMIZATION: The Sales and Marketing Optimization Course was developed as a

result of a yearlong research consortium to provide scientific methodology and tools for strategic planning and

deployment of sales and marketing function for Distributors

Page 7: Texas A&M University Engineering - Dr. F. Barry Lawrence · 2020-04-04 · Dr. F. Barry Lawrence Leonard and Valerie Bruce Chair Professor in Industrial Distribution Program Director,

DISTRIBUTION GROWTH AND MARKETSHARE: The Growth and Market share Course was developed as a

result of a yearlong research consortium to develop and codify best practices in achieving sustainable, profitable

growth for distributors and test those practices to determine shareholder value. The program has three parts that

focus on sustainable, profitable, growth – Generating Growth, Managing Growth and Sustaining Growth. All three

sections start with motivation and analytics behind the best practices. Then each section explores the best practices

in detail with the help of visual aids.

INTENSIVE PROGRAMS: As corporate research projects matured and increased in numbers, the GSCL knowledge

base became quite deep. It was clear that many firms needed programs with sufficient depth to easily bridge into

implementation. Dr. Lawrence and team developed a set of intensive programs to meet this need which immediately

sold out on opening. These programs have proven to be the most profitable ones for the GSCL and several more are

planned.

RESEARCH

The Industrial Distribution Program’s research is applied in nature to make it immediately applicable to solve real

world problems. Dr. Lawrence created the Supply Chain Systems Laboratory and Talent Incubator with the intent of

creating research that would improve our students’ ability to create solutions to meet current and future global

challenges.

The Global Supply Chain Laboratory (GSCL): The GSCL builds a pipeline for R&D, technology transfer, international entrepreneurship, and market access that will result in critical regional economic impact in world markets.

Talent Incubator: Conceived, designed and created the Talent Incubator at Texas A&M University to provide

students with hand-on project experience and provide companies with talent pipeline for internships and full-time.

Started in 2010, the Talent Incubator employs undergraduate students working on research projects has generated

industry funding already exceeding $1,500,000. Students work under the supervision of Dr. Barry Lawrence and

Research Associates from the GSCL.
