UI TEST AUTOMATION FORA WEB-BASED WORLDToday, HTML5-based UIs are no longer just for custom applications. HTML5 has become the universal GUI. Most, if not all enterprise application providers have adopted a hybrid approach to GUI development, using some version of HTML5 to develop UIs for web, mobile and client versions of their applications. SAP has launched UI5/Fiori and Salesforce now has Canvas. These new GUIs require a UI-based approach to testing and robust testing tools that can deal with the increasing complexity of running end-to-end tests across multiple browsers and UIs that are constantly changing.

Many legacy test automation solutions don’t work for responsive web-based UIs because they were geared toward static HTML and building big, monolithic scripts using programming languages. Traditional testing approaches follow the design and development of software, with an emphasis on identifying and removing errors in the code and preventing software failure. These testing techniques are organized around the way the software is built and IT is the primary owner of the process. In agile environments more of the responsibility for functional testing is shifted to development/scrum who many times prefer open and code based tools like Junit and SoapUI. Worksoft Certify can be leveraged to automate the creation of test data. Users create a test case that walks thru the system like a real user. The data generated by the test case can be then stored as recordsets to be used for testing.

Certify uses recordsets as an effective way to take a single test scenario and drive it with variations of data, such as different user details/security roles or different values to represent different inputs such as account details and contract ID numbers, etc. For packaged or legacy applications, a better approach is utilizing tests which set up their own data, because the database or data schemas are not documented.

Certify recordsets are Excel-like table mechanisms (rows and columns of information) that contain data values used in data-driven testing. This data in turn is stored in the Certify SQL server central repository. Tests can be executed from Certify or scheduled for unattended execution via Certify Execution Manager.

Why is Getting Test Data Hard?

When it comes to Test Data Management (TDM) there is no easy fix. Many TDM solutions fall short when it comes to meeting the complex data needs of testing modern day business processes that traverse multiple applications and have numerous data dependencies. Core challenges to setting up test data for end-to-end tests include:

• Data Correlation - Data has to be correlated across the entire end-to-end business process.

• System Testing - The correct data in the business workflow for the system under test must be used.

Worksoft makes working with your desired ALM system quick and easy. Integrating with tools like Micro Focus (HP) ALM, SAP Solution Manager, IBM Rational Quality Manager and other popular tools requires the system administrator to provide only a few integration attributes, such as paths or credentials, and typically requires less than half a day to complete.
