Editorial

'When you transform an airport today, you have to keep in mind the airports of tomorrow. This means anticipating what kind of new facilities will be available, what passenger expectations and needs will be,

and trends in air traffic in 2025. .

In 2006, Marseille Provence Airport offered non-stop flights to 58 destinations and had a footfall of 6 million passengers. By 2016, this had grown to over 100 destinations and 8.5 million passengers. 2017 is set to continue in the same way. With air traffic levels steadily rising, by 2025, Marseille Provence Airport expects to welcome over 11 million passengers, and to offer even more destinations to connect Marseille to the main international hubs across the globe.

For this purpose, in 2015 we launched a major investment programme of €500 million over 10 years, to develop new infrastructures with a clear ambition - to make Marseille Provence Airport a European benchmark of high-quality service

and operational efficiency.

Some of our transformations can already be seen, such as our ambition to create an improved passenger experience that is both personal and digital. These changes will only increase in the years to come.

Today, we are proud to reveal the first phase of our Terminal 1 extension project - the 'Coeur' of the airport. This project has been designed by Foster + Partners, a world-renowned architectural firm, linked to Tangram, an architectural firm in Marseille. With its focus on bold, modern and innovative architecture, Foster + Partners seek to respond to the developmental ambitions and international expansion projects of the airport and the region.'

Terminal 1 extension project

In order to anticipate air traffic growth, underpinned by the increase in international flights, we expect to serve over 11 million passengers per year by 2025. As such, one of our biggest challenges is to adapt and modernise our infrastructure and to optimise the main operations in processing passengers. With a focus on modernity, boldness and efficiency, this extension project for Terminal 1 will fulfil Marseille Provence Airport's capacity and operational requirements. Construction works will be carried out in different phases over the coming years:

█ Phase 1: the 'Coeur' of the airport, with a surface area of 20,000m², will optimise operations and improve passenger experience. It will link Halls A and B in Terminal 1 and will centralise numerous operational functions, such as security checks with brand-new equipment. A new airside zone will provide more retail and restaurant space. Officially revealed on Thursday 23rd November 2017, the 'Coeur' will be finished by the end of 2022 and opened at the beginning of 2023.

█ Phase 2: an international boarding pier, with a surface area of 13,500 m², will be attached to the 'Coeur' in 2027. It will allow more aerobridges to be added, increasing the overall capacity of Terminal 1 from 8 to 12 million passengers.

Together, these projects constitute the flagship of the overall investment proposal of €500 million over 10 years for Marseille Provence Airport, whose ambition is to become a European benchmark for customer service and operational efficiency. Overall, these two projects will cost approximately €250 million, including all related works. Work will begin at the beginning of 2020.

Project rationale

Designed by Norman Foster, the 'Coeur' will connect the iconic buildings of Halls A and B of Terminal 1 of the Marseille Provence Airport, to which a boarding pier can be added. This extension of the facilities at Terminal 1 will allow us to:

█ Respond to a predicted increase in air traffic, by significantly increasing the capacity of Terminal 1 from 8 to 12 million passengers. Including Terminal 2, the overall capacity of the airport will rise from 12 to 16 million passengers.

█ Improve and simplify passenger flow, by reorganising the facilities in Terminal 1. This will create a bigger, brighter waiting area and improve the clarity of the airport's operation.

█ Develop commercial activity, by creating a new retail space, with new signage and facilities that respond to the changing passenger needs and airport consumption patterns.

█ Anticipate future regulatory requirements for all airport activity.

█ Reduce operating costs, notably by centralising certain operations, such as security checkpoints.

A commitment to bold architecture Just like any creative process, all new architectural projects are inspired by personal experience, collective memory or even the memory of a place. The first terminal, built in 1961 by the famous architect Fernand Pouillon, has forged the beginning of an illustrious history and created the airport's DNA, later built upon by various figures.

The airport 'Coeur', designed by Foster + Partners, aims to connect the airport's historic and iconic buildings, thus creating an identity based on the heritage of great architects who have helped design the airport, especially Fernand Pouillon for Hall A (previously Hall 1) and Richard Rogers for Hall B (previously Hall 4).

'We believe that architecture comes from the synthesis of

various elements, which separately comprise and inform the

character of an airport. This includes the structure that

supports the terminal and its connections, the services that

allow it to function, its ecology, the quality of natural light, the

symbolism of the building's form and its relation to the

surrounding area, the flow of people through or around it, and

finally, its ability to bring a smile to the faces of passengers

through a personalised experience and anticipating their

needs. [...] Marseille Provence Airport has unique strengths

that help it to achieve this status, notably the strength, wealth

and unique diversity of the region where it is located, and

which it supports.

A building that reflects the region The architectural design takes inspiration from the surrounding region of Provence. The new Terminal 1 will act as a gateway rooted in the local area, by drawing on rural and urban aspects of Provençal cultural imagination, such as:

> the typically Provençal streets to get around, where different alignments control the main flow of people. These paths are connected around crossroads or squares to change direction. .

> the quay, inviting you to travel.

> the market square - a social, commercial and urban space at the heart of the village. Here, it will be at the heart of the airport. This space will be re-imagined into a lively area of terraces, shops and restaurants.

. > the Provençal sky and light. Transparency is one of the operative words of the project. It will offer the typical Provençal 'outside/inside' spirit.

The structure is being designed with 4 principles in mind:

- flexibility - proportion, - simplicity - versatility.

'Working on a building that is also quite literally the gateway to a region is a unique opportunity to

weave strong relations between two elements, to ensure that the first (or last) impression of the region

is a good one.

We have been inspired by Provence's beautiful towns and villages, characterised by impressive public

spaces that are perfect for meeting people, wandering and dreaming. These spaces, courtyards, quays,

plazas, squares and markets have inspired us to design structured, leafy indoor spaces that are infused

with meaning.

The space is designed to suit all passengers, whether they want to be sociable or private, enjoy a spot

of duty-free shopping or simply relax.

We have also been inspired by the 'inside/outside' culture that characterises the Provençal way of life:

glass walls to ensure that the passenger's whole journey is filled with greenery, and using typical

Provençal materials and colours.

We have also provided outdoor spaces, such as a panoramic terrace that offers a breathing space and

will allow travellers to soak up the last rays of the Mediterranean sunshine...

This will be undoubtedly a real showcase and a highlight of the airport'.

'Going beyond passengers' expectations!' An airport is a 'complex machine' that has to combine various elements to provide a safe, welcoming, efficient and improved air travel experience. The challenge for the airports of tomorrow is to respond to the needs and expectations of passengers in a personalised way.

'Passenger First' is one of the fundamental principles of Foster + Partners' approach. The 'Coeur' project will provide greater brightness, clarity and fluidity through the reorganisation of passenger flow in the departure and arrival areas in a single building. This space will be a place of goodbyes, welcomes, the first glimpse of the region, and the last impression that passengers will take with them.

Heavily inspired by the Provence region, the 'Coeur' will provide a new dimension to the Marseille Provence Airport and will ensure a unique passenger experience.

The key addition to this project Alongside the boarding pier, this new building will increase the overall capacity of the airport, and will also centralise various operations and facilities, in order to improve the quality of service and passenger flow.

Ultimately, the airport will be able to serve 16 million passengers per year, including 12 million in Terminal 1, 4 in Terminal 2.

The 20,000 m² 'Coeur' will allow various operations to be centralised, such as the check-in areas, baggage processing and reclaim, as well as security checkpoints, currently spread over several halls. This new layout will optimise running costs and offer greater fluidity.

'Baggage sorting' will be centralised for the whole of Terminal 1. This centralisation will allow greater flexibility and will provide more services, for both airlines and passengers.

Departures

Check-in and baggage drop-off will be centralised. Around 70 check-in desks will be available in Hall A of Terminal 1, as well as the 18 existing check-in desks in Hall B (previously Hall 4), which will remain operational.

After check-in, passengers will be naturally directed towards the 'Coeur' - the real nerve centre of Terminal 1. Passengers without hold luggage and who have already checked in can arrive directly into the 'Coeur'.

They can also benefit from a new experience: more space, a magnificent 23m-high hall, light... the space will be brighter and passenger flow more fluid. Passengers will be invited to go to the mezzanine level of the building, where the centralised security checkpoints will be located. This new security checkpoint area has been designed to be dynamic, moving between 14 and 21 lines, compared to the 18 currently available. This area and its innovative facilities reduce congestion; its architecture and equipment aim to reduce the stress often felt by passengers at this stage.

At this point, passengers will get a first glimpse of the airside zone, with shops that mimic alleyways and ports.

Passengers will then be ushered into this new, extensive space for easy access to the boarding areas. Designed to look like a port, the sleek layout of this space makes it easy to see all of the shops on offer.

Your eyes will be irresistibly drawn to the magnificent horizon overlooking the Etang de Berre, like the Provençal sea front. With a variety of shops and restaurants on offer, passengers can choose to relax, go shopping, have a bite to eat... and get into the mood to travel!

Passengers can also access an upper level where there is a VIP lounge and a terrace, nestled in the roof of the terminal, with magnificent views over the runways.

Ultimately, the creation of the international boarding pier, which backs onto the 'Coeur', will increase passenger capacity by 4 million people, bringing the overall capacity of Terminal 1 to 12 million passengers, and will allow the airport to welcome jumbo jets.

Arrivals

As they land, passengers will be greeted with views over the airport and the Provence region, and will only have to move one level, for a direct and smooth arrival.

Baggage reclaim will be on the ground floor of the 'Coeur'. All passengers arriving at Terminal 1 will pass through a reserved exit situated in the 'Coeur'. As a result, they can enjoy this outstanding space, dressed in Provençal colours.

An environmentally responsible airport, committed to sustainable development

Environmental strategy The extension of Terminal 1, with the construction of the 'Coeur' and the boarding pier, is fully committed to Marseille Provence Airport's environmental strategy. This building will provide energy-efficient facilities. Light, air and views will be used to the greatest advantage to accompany, direct and reassure the traveller on their journey, both on departure and arrival. Elements of local culture, such as plants, local and sustainable materials, or even the integration of regional art and culture, will be used to connect this space into the region and create the spirit of Provence. Environmental assessments and approval processes will be followed and will provide the framework for the project. Marseille Provence Airport will use its strengths to commit to a transformation project with an excellent environmental strategy, respecting its function as an airport whilst promoting a general sense of well-being in the new terminal.

One of the 5 commitments of Marseille Provence Airport is to save water and protect natural habitats. As a result, water usage in the extension and the consumption of energy will be controlled thanks to energy-efficient facilities. The technical management of the building will be optimised. The most advanced technologies will be used to quickly analyse data linked to energy efficiency and detecting possible issues, such as leaks. To provide ultimate comfort, electronic sensors in public spaces will provide data on temperature, humidity levels and CO2 levels to the ventilation system.

- Phase 2: Building the boarding pier - an additional capacity project - by 2027, allowing the airport to eventually serve 16 million passengers.

Selection process

After presentations by various contracting authorities, the selection committee chose 4 firms based on competence, and the main references for architecture and design firms. The choice was made in June 2016. The various architectural firms presented their proposals in December 2016. The 4 competitors presented in front of a selection committee in the first quarter of 2017. The latter gave their opinion at the beginning of June 2017, which allowed the director of Marseille Provence Airport to make a decision on who would carry out this project. This choice was submitted to and approved by the Surveillance council in July 2017. Assessments began in September 2017, and aim is to be finished by the end of 2018. 2019 will be largely dedicated to consulting with businesses. Construction work will begin in 2020.
