SCHOOL FEES Thank you to all those families who have finalised their school fees for 2017. We are very appreciative of your assistance in this matter. We would also remind those families that are yet to pay that we will send their names to Debt collection in Wagga Wagga this week. Please make an appointment to see us if this matter applies to you. KINDERGARTEN 2018 We are happy to welcome over 60 new Kindergarten students into Kindergarten next year. These students have been involved in a Transition program throughout Term 4 where they have had the opportunity to have some time each week in their new Kindergarten rooms. Last Thursday they had the opportunity to have the whole day in the kinder room. How quickly we forget just how small these new Kinder little ones are. SCHOOL FEES 2018 We have been working on the budget and the School Fees for next year. As has been the custom there will be a small increase in the fees (according to the CPI) . Please follow the link to check out the fees for 2018, http://web.spgww.catholic.edu.au/downloads/FeeInfo.pdf You will notice that there is a compulsory IT levy for each student at the school. This money is to enable us to replace many of our older and outdated computers. As you are aware Naplan will be on-line as from next year and we need to ensure that we have computers that will enable our students to carry out this test.

News from the AP/REC New Literacy and Numeracy Framework K-10 The CSO has recently launched its new Literacy and Numeracy Framework and has been aligned closely with our system’s Framework For Learning.
WHY? We recognise that educators must put the ‘why’ before the ‘how’ and the new framework directly reflects this. Always answer the WHY question first and answer it well. Why is the purpose, cause or belief that inspires individuals as well as communities. The most effective way to get people to take action and make changes is to inspire them to want to understand and value the WHY, rather than because they have to. The soul is nourished when it acts freely.
HOW? Professional Learning Communities in Action
The aim of the Professional Learning Community in Action is to develop collaborative practices which focus on effective teaching, professional inquiry and continuous improvement.
WHAT? Our focus is Literacy and Numeracy across all Key Learning Areas including English and Maths. We will use Instructional Approaches that are explicit, evidenced based, formative, phased and develop independent learning skills for gradual release of responsibility that is student centred. Assessment and Intervention will improve transition between stage learning using a tiered approach and one that is referenced by the Professional Teaching Standards.
Christmas Reconciliation Years 4-6 will have a Christmas Reconciliation Liturgy on Tuesday 5th December beginning at 9:30am. Years 2-3 will take place on Thursday 7th December at 9:30am. All parents are welcome to attend the liturgy and come to confession with the children.
[email protected] http://web.spgww.catholic.edu.au/
Infants Nativity & Christmas Concert Kindergarten are currently preparing for their Christmas nativity performance that will be held in the Father O’Dea Hall on Wednesday 6th December at 12noon. Year 1 and 2 will follow this performance with a Christmas concert where they will sing and dance to a number of our favourite Christmas carols. All parents and friends are invited to attend.
Immaculate Conception Mass St Patrick’s will celebrate a whole school Mass for the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Sacred Heart Church on Friday 8th December at 9:30am. All parents and friends are welcome to attend. Year 4 will be responsible for the readings and procession of gifts at this Mass. Restorative Practices At St Patrick’s we try to resolve all behaviour using restorative practices. Disagreements do not have to lead to conflict. A community with soul respects differing opinions and avoids the need to aggressively or blindly defend its position. Our uniqueness is what makes each of us special. We aim to keep the dignity of every student so that they continue to learn and thrive in our Catholic Education System.
Advent Each grade is learning about and celebrating Advent during the last four weeks of school leading up to Christmas. Each of our prayer tables are displaying an Advent wreath. This week we are lighting two candles each morning as we pray. The first week focusses on Hope while this week we learn about the Peace Jesus brings to us. Michael Morrell

Learning Support Project 2017
The Kindergarten students at St Patrick’s have been working so hard this year, learning their sounds and letters, sight words and how to write sentences and short stories. Now that they can write, it’s a great time to teach them the importance of writing for the Audience (the purpose of writing). Using the “Seven Steps to Writing Success” Program (Jen McVeity), we have learned to “Show Don’t Tell”. We don’t just write what we see e.g. “The boy is riding his bike”, we use “WOW” words (Adjectives and Verbs) to make our writing exciting e.g. “Whoosh! The excited boy peddles speedily down the road”. This is how “Show Don’t Tell” changes our writing from boring to exciting!
We have been using pictures to practice our “Show Don’t Tell” sentences, where “TELL” words (words you can see in the picture) are “banned” e.g. “big, scared polar bear”, “sat on the iceberg” and “small, cold iceberg”.
The Kinders have brainstormed “WOW” words to replace the boring words:
- Gabby wrote “The worried polar bear is balancing on the slippery iceberg”. - Isabella wrote “The terrified polar bear is hanging onto the shrinking iceberg”. - Antonio wrote “The nervous polar bear is balancing on the melting iceberg”.
As you can see no “Boring Bits” in these sentences! Students have also enjoyed standing up in front of the class and reading their sentences, this is a very brave thing to do and great for practicing presentation skills. They have been encouraged to speak loudly,
clearly and to be confident. “Show Don’t Tell” and “Ban the Boring Bits” can be practiced at home by encouraging your child to replace “boring” words in their writing with “WOW” words. Adjectives describe someone or something (e.g. colour, shape, size, texture/feel, number) or its special characteristics e.g. “brave, proud”. Remember to “Ban the Boring Bits” when writing, we don’t need to know you got up, had breakfast and brushed your teeth! We all do that every day, so “Start where the ACTION is!”
Well done Kinders, I look forward to reading your “Show Don’t Tell” stories.

CPS Basketball Challenge - Goulburn NSW
On the weekend of the 18-19 October, we had five teams represent our school at the CPS Basketball
Challenge. The Year 6 boys won the quarter final 16-15 in a very close, exciting game and went on to
play in the semi-final. They lost 33-12 against a very well drill Albury team. The Year 5 boys made it
through to the quarter final in Senior boys. The Senior girls team made it through to the grand final in
Division 2, finishing in second place with a silver medal. The Junior boys also made it through to the
grand final and came home with a silver medal too. The Junior girls progressed to the semi-finals. The
opposing team scored a final goal as the buzzer sounded, going down by one point.
All our students did us proud giving their best effort and playing with good sportsmanship. Well done!
A very big thank you to all the parents who supported and transported their children to this carnival.
A special thank you to Kylie Pastro, Lea & Wayne Salvestro, Scott Connor, Annette Waide, Kate Beltrame, Karen Collins
Angela Ellis and Debbie Della Franca who have assisted with training, coaching and managing the teams. Mrs Sarah Dunbar
also needs to be thanked for assisting with training when parents couldn’t attend.
Mitch Salvestro, Mason and Marcus’s older brother who attends Marian and is an ex-student deserves a very big thank you.
All weekend he coached and encouraged the Year 5 and the Year 6 boys teams. The boys really appreciated his time and
efforts.
Last but least, Thanks to Mrs Forlico who stepped in as the Teacher-in-Charge. Couldn’t have competed without her help and
time.

Diocesan Trials & Mackillop Achievements
Congratulations to Digby Paterson who trialled in Albury for the Diocesan Tennis team. Digby qualified for the Wagga
Diocesan team and will now compete in Wollongong, next year.
Last Thursday, we had a group of children trial for the Diocesan Boys and Girls Basketball teams. Congratulations to
Mason Salvestro, Aiden Trotter, Joanna MacRae, Emmerson Waide and Lily Beltrame on their selection. These
students will also compete as part of the Diocesan teams to play in Wollongong next year.
Hayden Forner competed for four days in Orange as a member of the MacKillop Cricket team, playing at the PSSA
(State) Carnival. This is a great achievement. The MacKillop team finished third overall. Even though at this stage
Hayden wasn’t selected to compete further, he did impress the selectors and I’m sure we will hear about other
cricketing achievement in years to come. A fantastic achievement Hayden and we are all very proud of your achieve-
ments and hard work.

Students throughout the whole school, have completed a wonderful program provided by the NRL. A big thank you to

very capable Year 10 Marian Students. The students loved the skills they learnt and the games they played. Every
student in Years 3-6 received a free football and each student in K-2 received a Book about Two dogs; Blue and Red at
the conclusion of the program - How lucky. Thank you to the NRL for supporting our students.
Have a great few last weeks.
