It looks like we are about to be parents again! We have a colony of cockatoos that live at the school. They made a nest last year and we had some chicks hatch. It looks like the same pair are back because the boys showed me that we have a nest with eggs again. The eggs are being guarded by two cockatoos and a loyal band of teenage boys.

MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIADS RESULTS
Students in 7 Brabham and 8 Rose competed in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads Competition throughout this year. This competition challenged students to develop their problem solving skills by applying mathematical concepts to a range of challenging problems. Students competed in five rounds of the competition. The highest individual score trophy was awarded to Seoro Kim in 8 Rose and Daniel Ryu in 7 Brabham. Additionally, Seoro Kim was ranked as a top 10% achiever in the competition and Kingston Nacagilevu and Pranjal Pathak were awarded top 25% achiever patches. Kingston Nacagilevu and Albert Yu received Special Achievement Awards of Encouragement. All students are to be commended for their consistent effort and enthusiasm throughout the competition. WORM FARMS - WRIGGLING OUR WAY TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
YEAR 7E CROSS-CURRICULAR PROJECT
At the end of Term 3, students from Year 7E participated in a cross-curricular project focussed on sustainability. In particular, students explored one of Australia’s most prevalent sustainability problems – excessive food waste. Students investigated the causes of food waste in Australia, its impact on the environment and ways to reduce food waste through worm farms. The students worked on the project in Geography, English, Mathematics and Science.
In Geography, students started the project by constructing a working definition of sustainability based on its three pillars – environmental, economic and social. Students then went on to investigate the causes of food waste and its prevalence across Australia. Students undertook practical activities to examine the general waste discarded by the student population at Ashfield Boys HS, determining how much of it could have been avoided, recycled or pro-cessed by worms instead of land fill.

They explored the process by which food waste decomposes, discovering that significant amounts of the methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, are released, contributing to the enhanced greenhouse effect and climate change. Students were encouraged to think critically about real world problems like global warming, the impact that it has on ecosystems and agriculture, and practical ways in which people can dispose of food waste more sustainably.
In mathematics, students analysed the data they gathered from their fieldwork activities in Geography by constructing data tables and pie charts. They explored the different methods used to represent quantitative data and how to draw conclusions from data. Students also used their time in Mathematics to investigate the concepts of volume and capacity, taking measurements of their own worm farms and calculating the dimensions of the containers they used, the mass of the worms and the optimum volume of food required to keep the worms alive.
5
In Science, students planned and constructed their own worm farms in small groups. They conducted research to find out about the features of worms, their habitat, nutrition and life cycle. They used this information to design worm farms that replicated the ideal conditions of worms’ habitats in nature. They then chose their materials, with a focus on recycled items, and constructed their worm farms, using tools and thinking innovatively about the most effective ways to collect the nutrient-rich ‘worm juice’ produced.
6
In English, students documented their journey through the project by creating a series of texts. Students wrote a procedure to explain how they constructed their worm farms. They also delved into persuasive texts, writing a persuasive letter and creating a poster to convince their peers to construct their own worm farms at home. They explored how both written and visual techniques can be used to promote messages like the importance of sustainability and responsible food waste practices.
Following the successful construction of their worm farms, the students have continued to maintain them by regularly feeding the worms food scraps collected at home and by monitoring the temperature and moisture levels. The students will soon be collecting ‘worm juice’ which they will use to conduct experiments on its effect on the growth of plants.

FIRST ROUND OF THE JUNIOR THEATRESPORTS COMPETITION
Congratulations to the Junior TheatreSports team who were placed a very respectable fourth in the first round in the Junior Competition. Nerves were on edge for the first games, but the boys found their mo-jo and their confidence grew. The boys have been supported by very able senior players, who attend all rehearsals sharing their expertise and tips for success; thanks to Vincent Li, Edwin French- Jenkins and Francesco Buda. It was great to have enthusiastic parents and friends there on the night to cheer on the players. Many thanks to Ms Whitting and David Callan for their ongoing support and tuition. Junior Team Players : Dominic Shapiro, Oliver Bauer, Matthew Purvis (Year 8), Benjamin Kavanoff, Austin McMullen, Benjamin Munro (Year 7).

Congratulations to Xiao Wu of Year 9 who has won a medal from the University of NSW for Maths. This medal is for coming first in the Year 9 ICAS Maths competition! This year over 980,000 students sat ICAS examinations in Australia and the University has only awarded 514 medals. This is a wonderful achievement of which we are all incredibly proud.

URBAN CHANGE FIELDWORK
All Year Nine Geography students recently undertook fieldwork in the city to examine the nature of urban change in the area. Students looked at the reuse of old rail infrastructure at the Goods Line, and, at the challenges of fitting residents into apartments near the city centre. For many boys, the highlight was viewing the city model in Customs House, and understanding how all the parts of the city puzzle fit together. Students also addressed some deep social questions, such as the treatment of homeless and disadvantaged, as well as debating the proposed redevelopment of the Sirius Building. All groups came away with a better understanding of what the Sydney of tomorrow is going to look like.

JUNIOR FUTSAL - TWO FANTASTIC PERFORMANCES ON A HOT SPRING DAY
It looks like our Junior Futsal teams waited for the sky to turn into crystal blue and the Sun to shine blisteringly bright to produce the best two performance of the season so far. First on the field was the “A” team who opened the game defensively strong, allowing the opposing team to control the ball. By being well structured and composed we closed all gates in front of our goalkeeper. Then gradually we started to push forward, what resulted in Luke G. scoring the opening goal, only a few minutes before the end of the first half. The second half started in similar manner, as Luke scored another goal. Dilhan and Joel controlled defence while Anthony, Duggal, Sam and Mohammad kept a constant pressure on North Sydney’s players while in possession. Seconds before the game ended we conceded a goal due to temporary lack of focus, which did not affect the result. The “B” team had a simple task, that is, to repeat the “A” team performance. Before the game, David Loadable promised to produce his best performance of the season. What David promised, David delivered. Despite entering the game from the bench, he managed to find the back of the net on 4 occasions. He also scored two goals in the space of only 30 seconds. David’s final goal was a master class as he dribbled through all the opposing players before scoring from close range with his left, the less dominant foot. As the second half belonged to David, the first half was
marked by Casper Yule. His brilliant passage of play was awarded with three consecutive goals. Yule added his fourth goal half way through the second half. Overall, Yule was assisted by three different players (Thomas, Owen and Sam) which marked an incredible team perfor-
