This Semester we have been hard at work with our Reading, learning about strategies such as making inferences, comparing and contrasting, visualising and self monitoring. In Maths we have worked hard in areas of number and algebra, measurement and geometry and statistics and probability. We have learned how to write imaginative and informative texts such as narrative, description, reports and response/reviews. 5/6S learned about Gold in Term 3 and Space in Term 4. We have also participated in technology based activities with Mr Shipp and Miss Cheney. Year 5 went on an excursion to the Discovery Day at Wyong High School while Year 6 went to Newcastle University with their parents at Callaghan Campus where they had a wonderful time, participating in science based activities and learning about future careers in Science. Year 6 have also visited Gorokan High School in many transition activities to high school in 2014. We are looking forward to upcoming events such as Year 6 Farewell, Semester 2 Reports, Platinum Level Excursion and Presentation Assembly. PRESENTATION DAY ASSEMBLIES 2013 This year presentation day will be held on Tuesday 10th December. Assembly times are as follows: Years 3 to 6 at 9.30am Preschool to Year 2 at 12 noon CLASS OF THE WEEK—5/6S How quickly this term is going. The term is just flying past. We still have many interesting school events happening during the rest of this year. At the moment teachers are busy writing their Semester Two reports. The information within these reports is based on student’s progress since Semester One. When writing these reports teachers use a variety of data which is collected during class lessons and regularly analysed by class teachers and stage co-ordinators during stage and staff meetings. This information is also used by teachers to decide class academic awards which will be presented during Presentation Day. This year’s Presentation Day will be held on 10th December. Many exciting events have been happening at school this week. Earlier in the week our Year 5 students experienced what it would be like to attend university. This exciting activity is a part of our “Aim High Program”. Many students have told me what a wonderful time they had and more importantly how they really want to go to university when they grow up. Another fantastic event that occurred this week was the preliminary round of “The Lion Peter Foster Public Speaking Competition” for Year 6 students. This competition is held to commemorate the life of the late Peter Foster and the wonderful work he did for the local Lion’s Club. The family of Peter Foster donate a scholarship to help the winner and their family buy school uniforms and equipment for Year 7 high school. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the preliminary rounds but speaking with Mrs Curran and Ms West, the standard of this year’s speakers was exceptional. The final of this competition will be held at 9.30am on Tuesday 19th November in our school hall. Parents are welcome to attend and hear some amazing speakers. Also this week the school’s Executive teachers held a Planning Day where they planned and discussed school structures, learning experiences and grade and stage activities. Next year parents will be advised early during Term One of all grade/stage excursion venues and projected costs. Applications for subsidised Bus Travel have been sent out to eligible students and should be completed and return to the school office no later than Friday 22nd November, 2013. DISCOVER UNI DAY On Monday 11th November, 35 Year 5 students attended the ‘Discover Uni Science and Engineering Challenge’ day held at Wyong High School. Students competed in groups of 4, against other schools, to complete a series of construction challenges. These included the Mars Buggy challenge, the mini-pult and Electra-city. Students used principles of science and engineering to construct an object to meet a specified purpose. In the grand finale, team Rusi, James and Dylan built a bridge that was able to withstand a sizeable mass and came second overall, defeating students in Years 6 and 7. Several organisers of the event approached me throughout the day and commented that our students were the best behaved and the most engaged of all the students there. This was a fantastic day for all the students and I sincerely hope that we are invited to attend again next year.
