We certainly have a very busy term already. On Tuesday our student leaders attended the Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community annual student leadership conference at Magenta Club. This was an opportunity for our students to work with students from other schools in the development of leadership skills and knowledge, and experience the future of education, including workshops from a range of inspiring presenters. A big thank you to our sponsors, The Entrance Lions Club, MSP Photography, and Mrs Bayfield and Ms Martinez for their hard work on the executive committee. Congratulations to our amazing athletes who represented The Entrance Public School last Friday with distinction. All our students gave their best efforts and can be proud of their achievements. Thank you to Mrs Ambrose, Mrs Tolman, Mrs Chaffer and Mr Stephen for ensuring our team was well prepared. It was great to see so many parents cheering for all of our students. Congratulations to Mrs Canobie and our netball teams who performed with skill, determination and passion at the Netball Gala Day last week and thank you to the parents who assisted with transport. A reminder that if you have a concern regarding a conflict or have a concern with another student and your child, it is NOT appropriate to approach the child. All concerns must be raised with a staff member, Assistant Principal, Deputy Principal or the Principal. Failure to follow the correct way of dealing with these issues may result in the Police enforcing the Inclosed Lands Act which then prevents access to the school. Also a reminder that it is government policy to be smoke free within 5m of entry points to schools. Please respect this policy when visiting or waiting outside the school.

TIME TO ENROL FOR KINDERGARTEN AND PRE SCHOOL 2019 Enrolments are now being taken for children starting kindergarten or preschool in 2019. Please advise the office of your child’s name and date of birth and we will send enrolment forms home for you to complete and return. You will also need to provide your child’s original birth certificate, statement of complete immunisation from Medicare and proof of your current address. If you have any friends or neighbours who may have a child ready to start school next year, please let them know it is time to contact the school for information.

Flu season is here! Influenza is spread from person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. Remind your child about these good hygiene practices to minimise the spread of infection:

• Anyone who is sick with influenza symptoms should stay home until their symptoms are gone.

• Cover the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the garbage bin after use.

• Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

If you or your child develops influenza-like illness, seek the advice of your family doctor as you would with any other illness. The seasonal influenza vaccine, which protects against the pandemic influenza strain as well as two other influenza strains, is now available free to eligible people. More information about the vaccine is available from the NSW Health Immunisation Unit's vaccination page. Have a great fortnight.

Welcome to Week 6. Thank you to all our parents/carers for the effort you went to with creating and buying costumes for our Book Character Parade. Our students looked fabulous and really enjoyed dressing up. A fabulous day had by all. Rock Pool Rambles Excursion

On Monday 24th September, as part of Stage 2’s Geography unit this semester, we have organised a mini excursion, for our Year 4 students to discover and explore the local rock pools located between Blue Bay and The Entrance. The purpose of this excursion is to study the natural features of this area, its lurking dangers, as well as observe the fauna and flora that live in these areas. There will be two rangers from the local Central Coast Council to guide and share their expertise with the children. The cost for this excursion is $2.00 per student and they will also need to bring along a clear plastic container to collect and observe some of the small safe rock pool marine animals. Please return permission notes and money to the office as soon as possible. Thank you to Ms Ambrose for organising this great opportunity for our Year 4 students. At School on Time Ready to Learn Arriving on time for school makes sure that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities that happen early in the day, when they are most alert. Early morning learning activities include the days learning agenda, spelling, reading and writing. Your child can miss so many opportunities to learn these critical life skills. Being on time helps your child to learn about routines and commitment. It gives your child time to greet their friends before class and can reduce disruptions in the classroom. Arriving on time, every day makes children feel good about themselves!

Stage 2 Day Camp! Permission notes and medical forms for the Stage 2 Day Camp at Gosford Active Outdoor Education are being collected. If you have misplaced your reading log, remember to get a replacement copy off your classroom teacher. Stage 2 Teachers Mrs Haslam (4H), Ms Ambrose (4A), Mrs Burke (4B), Mrs Canobie (3C), Mrs Kirk (3K) and Mrs Duncan (3/4D) STAGE 3 NEWS

Dear Parents/ Caregivers, Although the Canberra Camp is over, there are still some outstanding payments to be made. Please continue to make payments to the office. Thank you to our amazing P&C!

A massive thank you to our school’s P&C who managed to raise enough money to send one of our amazing Year 6 students, Justine C, to the Central Coast GATS Camp! Justine was successfully chosen due to her amazing swimming records and will be

participating in the Sports Science strand of the GATS camp. Justine would like to thank the P&C for the wonderful bacon and egg rolls they made last Friday. She greatly appreciates the support from our school community. ATSI STEM Camp

Some Stage 3 ATSI students were lucky enough to go off to camp last week! For three days and two nights they were given the opportunity to participate in STEM activities at Camp Toukley. Mr McInnes accompanied our Stage 3 students and raved about how well behaved they were. They

represented TEPS with pride and participated in all activities. I am so glad you guys had fun! Fingers crossed we get the same opportunity next year!

Stationary Please ensure that your child is equipped with the stationery needed for the school day. We ask that your child have a blue/black pen, a red pen, a lead pencil, scissors, glue, sharpener, rubber and a ruler (minimum). Getting into the habit of being organised and prepared will benefit them greatly, especially leading into high school.

Sports News Fantastic effort to all students who represented TEPS at the District Athletics Carnival. It was a really long day and although not everybody made it to the next level, they should all be proud of their efforts. Caili, Kadin, Lucas, Justine and Summer have all made it to Sydney North! Well done Stage 3 representatives!

Year 6 Farewell Committee In Week 3 a note was sent home asking parents of Year 6 students to join the Farewell Committee. If you have missed out on a note, please see your child’s classroom teacher for a copy. Year 6 teachers would greatly appreciate ANY help.

Leadership Conference Our school leaders attended the TLLC’s Leadership Conference on Tuesday at Magenta. The Leadership Conference had workshops to help equip our leaders with the skills necessary to not only perform their duties but to

continue pursuing leadership opportunities going into high school. Our leaders were inspired by the speakers and socialised with leaders from other schools and students from the high schools. The RYSS Bus is coming!

The RYSS (Regional Youth Support Services) Bus will be working with our Year 6 students to provide some support before they head off to high school! This will be on September 7th. We look forward to the visit!

Sincerely, Miss Martinez (Relieving Assistant Principal Stage 3), Mrs Bayfield, Ms Chaffer, Mrs Robinson and Mr McInnes

CBCA Illustrators @ Large! A group of 21 budding illustrators from Stage 3 joined 9 other schools in an illustrators workshop at Erina Fair library with the fantastic author/illustrators Dub Leffler and Liz Anelli.

Premier’s Reading Challenge The 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge has officially ended. Our school goal was to have more than 220 students finish the challenge this year and I am happy to report that 246 students have stepped up and helped to achieve this goal. If you found a great book during this year’s challenge, be sure to let your friends know about it. A great book is made awesome through the joy of sharing it with others! All students who finished their Premier’s Reading Challenge in the last few weeks will receive their merit certificate in the coming weeks at a Friday assembly. These may be staggered, as there were so many of you! Congratulations TEPS! Book Week 2018 Find Your Treasure was a fantastic theme for sharing our love of reading and literature at TEPS in 2018. We celebrated with a weeklong book fair in the library, organised another massive book character parade, and hosted two fantastic authors across three fantastic days. Our Book Fair has helped raise over $600 for the library. Thank you to all who came into the library to purchase from the fair and help our school achieve this target. The library will use these funds to replenish our much loved fiction series collection.

Winners of the Pirate Guessing Competition: Kaitlyn C, Amelia W and Emily E

Judy Townsend met with all students across a two-day marathon in the library, sharing a range of fantastic insights into her processes as a writer. A big thanks to Mrs Knowles for helping to organise this event.

Dianne Wolfer travelled all the way from the South Coast of Western Australia to visit with Stage 2 and 3 to share her tips and tricks of the trade as a fantastic historical fiction writer. Dianne was a very inspiring and thought provoking visitor. I would like to thank the wonderful team at the Children’s Book Council of NSW Central Coast for giving our students the gift of her visit.

Changes Coming Soon The Myer Foundation has awarded our school library with $10,000 to revamp our Junior Fiction section with the focus on increasing functionality and improving on the flexible design of this space. Stay tuned for more news but expect to see some new shelves with forward facing browser bins and new soft seating in the very near future. Thank you so much to the Myer Foundation and the wonderful Ms Bayfield for providing this awesome opportunity. Our school library is a place for our entire school community to come together to share a love of learning and a love of reading. These works will make it an even more enjoyable space to do this. Mrs Evans Teacher Librarian LEARNING AND SUPPORT NEWS Lucky Book Draw Congratulations to the following students who have received book prizes in our Lucky Book Draw. We had a few extra prizes this fortnight for Book Week! Theodorina KW William 1/2 D Callum 2C Kirrilly 4B Taleija 5R Students get their name in the draw once they have reached 75 nights for Kindergarten, or 100 nights for Years 1-6. Mindfulness Some parents have been asking what the Mindful Schools Program is all about. Mindfulness is being aware and in the present moment. When you are practising Mindfulness you are not thinking about what you are doing next or the things that have happened in the past. Mindfulness is taking a moment to slow down your brain and just be. Research shows that Mindfulness can have positive effects on mental health and well-being. It can improve attention, reduce stress and support you to regulate your emotions. Your child has been learning some different techniques to use when mindfully breathing. Ask your child to show you how to get into your mindful body and show you how to do mindful breathing. Life can be so busy, taking a breath and slowing down can help you to see things more clearly.

The children have also been learning how to send kind thoughts, not just to others but also to themselves. Too often, the pattern of self-talk is negative as we remember the things people say and do which have impacted us negatively. Research has shown that sending kind thoughts produces an increase in positive emotions, which leads to a wide range of benefits. However, we don’t need any scientific studies to know how good it feels to give and receive kindness. Just think of the last time you smiled at a friend or were received with genuine warmth. Kindness brings happiness and well-being directly to our lives. Sue Densmore and Jodie Harris Learning and Support Teachers
