Dear Families, ' To every child in a Catholic School We are committed to knowing you deeply We value you as a capable and competent learner and will support your active engagement in the learning process. In partnership with you and your family we commit to high expectations for your learning progress, well being and achievement You matter to us' This learning statement for every child in our Catholic schools in SA has recently been launched and distributed to our schools. As you can see, it is a powerful commitment statement and one that here at SFX we connect with and support fully. We value every child in our care and strive to support them fully throughout their primary education. I see much evidence of how our partnership with families strengthens our connections and relationships. Thank you for your continued support and for many, your presence within our school. For our many families who are unable to spend time at school, we appreciate your connectedness through contact with teachers via email or calls and even your response to our requests when required. Every one connected to SFX matters to us! Catholic Education Week celebrations were truly amazing across the school, with so many rich and happy experiences. The week is celebrated to recognise the important role that all Catholic schools make towards the education of children and how we support and develop them in reaching their true potential. This is what we aim to do continually, yet to stop and recognise and celebrate, always provides a deeper understanding of the value and excellence a Catholic education offers. At SFX we enjoyed celebrating together, within our community and with a number of joint events with Gleeson College, including the School Boards of our region coming together to acknowledge the week. You may have seen on our Facebook page, the range of celebrations that took place here and the many happy faces depicting their enjoyment! I encourage you to connect to our page to keep up with all current happenings. We also were featured in the Leader Messenger newspaper as a joint venture, advertising Catholic education in the North East of Adelaide. I am pleased to see that we will also feature in a special story around our day last week as part of International Outdoor Classroom Day. Recently, our School Board approved officially, our Master Plan prepared by Architect, Peter Moeck. This then continues the process of approval by Catholic Education. We are currently gaining quotes for the anticipated removal of our current carpark sheds to the other side of the oval. This will open up the space and provide an appealing view of our oval and environment. We do hope that this existing space will also house a future Early Years service on our site, which I know will be a wonderful addition to our learning programmes here at SFX. Next week, I will be travelling to Canberra with many of our Year 7 students and staff, on the inaugural trip to our National Capital. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to be immersed in so many interesting experiences. The programme is quite exceptional, with a highlight being the visit to Parliament House. Our local Member, The Honourable Mr Tony Zappia MP, plans to meet us at Parliament House, which will add to the experience for us. Families this weekend will be busy preparing and packing warm clothes! Keep an eye on SFX Facebook as we will share some highlights throughout the week. Many of you would have read information regarding the current funding issues arising from Gonski2.0. I have attached a letter to families from our Interim Director, Bruno Vieceli for your consideration. (See Page 7) This week, we have announced that school hats are no longer necessarily to be worn throughout our upcoming winter months. We will return to wearing them during Term 3. “Blessed are they

“May the Ancient Dreaming inform and inspire us. May the resilience of the First Peoples encourage us. May the clarity and respect of the Prophets motivate us. May the endurance and colour of the land sustain us. May the yearning of all peoples for unity

reconcile us.” (Blessing by Elizabeth Pike)

National Reconciliation Week runs annually from 27 May – 3 June. In 2017, we reflect on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision. The theme for this year is “Let’s take the next steps” As we commemorate these significant milestones, all Australians are asked to be a part of the next big steps in our nation’s reconciliation journey. As a Catholic school, grounded in Gospel values, we are aware of the importance of Reconciliation. A belief in the inherent dignity of the human person is the foundation of all Catholic social teaching and Jesus’ command to “love one's neighbour as one's self”, is an essential part of this teaching between peace, justice and reconciliation. Peace is the fruit of justice and is dependent upon reconciliation among human beings.

St Vincent de Paul

Thank you for the overwhelming response so far for our Vinnies winter appeal. As a school community, we have filled 8 clothing donation bins! The bins will be around the school until the 16th June, so there is still time to send in any unwanted clothing to school. A reminder also that we are asking for non-perishable food to be sent in to school to be distributed to those most vulnerable in our community. Items can be left in your child’s classroom.

Community Prayer Our next community prayer will be held under the green room shelter at 9am on Thursday 8 th June. All parents and friends are welcome to join us.

Sacrament Program

Para Hills/Modbury - The next workshop is on June 3rd beginning at 4pm with a focus on Eucharist and also incorporating a Confirmation practice. Please bring along a plate of food to share for afternoon tea. All are invited to attend Mass afterwards at John XXIII at 6.00pm.

St David’s Tea Tree Gully– The next workshop is on June 7th at 7pm with a focus on

Confirmation/Eucharist practice.

Student Leaders and Year 6 VMC visit Gleeson College On Wednesday, 17th May the Year 6 & Year 7 leaders went to Gleeson College to visit and it was really fun. All the Gleeson leaders were nice and told us many interesting things about Gleeson. We got shown around the school as well as talking with the school leaders from St David’s and Our Lady of Hope. There were snacks and drinks as well which was yummy! In our groups, we talked about leadership, how we can fix problems in our schools and what high school might be like. All around it was a really fun day for everyone there, even the teachers! It left everyone happy going back to their own school. Zara Fergusson Year 6/Room 22 Leader

Last week, the Year 6 students enjoyed 2 days of action packed outdoor activities at school. At SFX we are able to offer such an experience due to our location, facilities and staff expertise. Activities included - Bush Cooking, Bridge Building (over the Dry Creek behind our school, although a number of students failed to stay dry!), Physical Pursuits, Orienteering and Meal Preparation. The 'World's Greatest Game' was played in the evening after a showcase of talent was on display during the Talent Night. Students slept in tents (most were put up independently) as we crossed our fingers with the weather. Marshmallows became the flavour of Thursday evening, as the camp fire became an attraction. A big thank you to Luke Taverner and Damien Stagg who became honorary Year 6 teachers for the 2 days and shared their skills and wisdom.

I would like to introduce myself as the newest staff member of the SFX school community. My name is Todd La Forgia and I have taken on the Deputy Principal role as of the beginning of Term 2. I bring with me twenty years of experience in Catholic Education, most recently as the Head of the Primary School at Blackfriars Priory School, where I had been since 2011. I consider myself fortunate to have been given this opportunity and I have enjoyed my first four weeks at SFX, beginning to engage with and learn the many names, faces and stories of those within this wonderful community. Please feel free to introduce yourself to me in the yard as a chat with you would be most welcomed. Best wishes, Todd

We have a new space in our school – the Hut. It is located in the ‘old’ Adaptive Ed.

room (opposite the Green Room).

This is a space that is throughout the day – class and lunch times – as an alternate

learning and play space.

What is The Hut?

A learning environment that will:

provide a quiet space for children to have ‘breaks’ from class

promote relaxation and meditation

encourage self-regulation

encourage social development

provide a quiet space for children at lunch times to engage with friends in quiet activities What does The Hut look like?

It has:

quiet spaces with soft lighting

bean bags, cushions….

relaxation music

guided meditation apps

books

quiet activities e.g. puzzles, blocks, cards, games….

drawing, colouring, pencils

Many students are enjoying The Hut:

“It’s very enjoyable”

“It’s really nice. You get to spend time with friends here”

“There are lots of good games to play”

“It’s a nice, calm place to relax”

“I like coming to The Hut to do drawing”

“I like the fairy lights”
