Students ran in near perfect conditions just before the weather changed into the freezing, cold and wet conditions experienced on Friday. Not only did students get to run in pleasing weather conditions, they also had the benefit of admiring the picturesque scenery, running alongside of our local riverbends. It was great to see everyone participating and ‘having a go’, even though some students found the distance quite a challenge. It was also great to see parents and staff encouraging everyone, running with them along the track and cheering them through at the finish line. Thanks must go to Sarah Houston for her organisation and co-ordination of the event on the day. Thanks also to all of our parent helpers who acted as officials on the day. A job well done! Congratulations to our aged champions (8/9 years) - Kyper Woods and Poppy Barnes; (10 years) – Hilton Hargreaves and Charli Giddins; (11 years) – Nate Clarke and Emily Cai; and (12/13 years) Jim Houston and Isobella Murray. Presentations of medallions were made at assembly last Friday and the District Cross Country will be held on Friday, 31 st May in Deniliquin. NAPLAN Good luck to all of our Year 3 and Year 5 students who will be sitting their NAPLAN tests this week. Tests are conducted in writing, language conventions, reading and mathematics. Children are encouraged to have a good sleep and a hearty breakfast so that they are able to concentrate throughout the testing period. Asthma As the cold weather approaches, we are noticing that more and more students are presenting to sick bay with asthma- like symptoms. We are an asthma friendly school and our front office staff are well trained in the treatment of asthma, however we ask that all students who have a diagnosed asthma condition, provide the front office staff with an up to date asthma plan that is prepared for them by their doctor. This will ensure that treatment is given correctly and our information is up to date. Play Equipment Please be aware that the play equipment at Hay Public School is not supervised by a teacher before and after school. Children are asked to not be on the equipment during these times, even if supervised by a parent. Once again this comes down the school having a ‘duty of care’ to each and every student and risks need to be managed to avoid serious injury. Students must only play on the play equipment at school when it is directly supervised by a teacher. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter. Mother’s Day Morning Tea Thank you to all mothers, grandmothers, parents and caregivers who attended the Mother’s Day morning tea in freezing conditions last Friday. It was a special day for our students. Have a great week! Carol Oataway Principal 15th May 2019 CROSS COUNTRY AGE CHAMPIONS No Assembly this week SCHOOL RULES I can do my best. Learning Walks

Last week Mrs Oataway and myself undertook a number of learning walks throughout the school. Our focus for the learning walks was numeracy and the implementation of number talks and rich tasks within the maths session.

We were delighted to observe the high level of student engagement and students reflecting on what they were learning. The mathematical language students were using to interact with the content was very pleasing.

A focus of our maths lessons is a daily number talk. Students are encouraged to use hand signals during number talks to indicate their level of understanding. It’s great to see that Kindergarten are already familiar with the Thumbs Up (I have an answer) and I agree symbol. These moves for number talks will be used throughout their primary school years at Hay Public School.
