Lectures and Events

Lecture and Open EveningEd Bottoms/AA ArchiveTuesday 5 February, 5.00 Lecture HallBrief Encounter: From Bedford Square to the OscarsFrom 1927–32, a succession of AA graduates embarked on careers in the British film industry. Employed primarily as art directors, they dominated the field and set new standards well into the 1950s, working with directors such as Hitchcock, Powell & Pressburger, David Lean, Laurence Olivier and Joseph Losey. Using original archival material, this talk will trace their careers and examine the impact and the role of their architectural training at the AA.Open EveningTuesday 5 February, 6.30–9.0032 Bedford SquareThis evening offers a chance to explore what is one of the most significant collections of original material related to the history of UK architectural education. Some of the major new acquisitions received over the past 12 months will be on display in the Archive rooms. Artefacts include the Otto Koenigsberger Archive and work by Peter Wilson (Bolles+Wilson), Robin Evans, Mehmet Konuralp, Bill Greensmith and Paul Shepheard.

Research Cluster EventUrban Prototypes: Mentalities and PerspectivesWednesday 6 February, 6.00Lecture HallPrototypical approaches are now prevalent within architectural and urban design. Suggesting an affinity with the speed, efficiency and flexibility of postfordist and computational methods of research and production, the prototype appears to offer an ideal means for architecture to engage with contemporary conditions of urbanisation. Drawing upon their recent work in the Urban Prototypes research cluster of the AA, Clara Olóriz Sanjuán and Douglas Spencer will present a critical analysis of this phenomenon framed within the concept of ‘mentalities’ as employed by Tafuri in his treatment of the territorial transformations of renaissance Venice and informed by the perspectives gleaned from their interviews with figures such as David Grahame Shane, Pier Vittorio Aureli, Françoise Fromonot, Charles Waldheim and Eva Castro. See website for further details.

Lunchtime LectureHarry Mallgrave: Semper, Animism, and Embodied SimulationThursday 7 February, 1.00 Lecture HallToday, Gottfried Semper is seen as one of the principal theorists and architects of the nineteenth century, and there are multiple dimensions in which his ideas can be pursued. This talk will consider his remarks on reading the architectural form in animistic terms, the context in which his discussion took place, his influence on later theories of empathy (Einfühlung) and the resurgence of interest in the mechanisms of empathy in contemporary biology and neuro-science.

Harry Mallgrave has enjoyed a distinguished career as an award-winning scholar, translator and editor. He is a professor of architectural history and theory at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His latest study, Architecture and Embodiment: The Implications of the New Sciences and Humanities for Design, is scheduled to appear with Routledge in March 2013.

Evening LectureRahul Mehrotra: Working In MumbaiThursday 7 February, 6.00Lecture HallNote: This lecture is in collaboration with The British School at Rome
