PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends,

The year is certainly underway and we can hardly believe it is already the end of Week 3! Last week was very busy, with our Kindergarten students arriving, our students in Years 4-6 participating in the e-Safety Internet Safety Day and our Year 6 students off to CARES to learn about bike safety. The week also featured sport and creative arts try-outs for students and staff.

I would like to commend the Kindergarten 2018 staff and our parents for the excellent way they prepared the children for their first day of school – there were big smiles and happy stories to share at the end of the day. Well done, everyone!

Meet the Teacher AfternoonOn Tuesday afternoon our teachers provided an opportunity for you to come along and meet them to familiarise you with your child’s classroom and routines for the year.

The partnership between home and school is a strong one which benefits your child so please work towards building a positive relationship with your child’s teacher throughout the year.

The department recognises the importance of this bond between parents and teachers and as such has developed the following document for distribution:

Respectful Communities Charter The best education happens when parents and school work together. This recently released document, The School Community Charter, aims to provide guidelines to promote positive learning environments for our students. It covers the following key elements:

Collaborative – We work in partnership to promote student learning

Respectful – We treat each other with respect and fairness

Communication – We communicate in a positive and constructive manner

Please take a moment to read through the School Community Charter via the following link: https://educa-tion.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/going-to-a-public-school/media/documents/school-community-charter.pdf

Sportspro CommencesThis week we welcomed back our Sportspro team to commence their lessons with all students K-6 every Wednesday and Thursday – it was great to see Dean and the crew back again for 2019.

Through the Sportspro program, students are trained by specialist coaches to develop fundamental movement skills in a one hour session each week. Skills taught throughout the program prepare the students for sporting carnivals, games and key movement skills from the PDHPE syllabus.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

SportsproThe program also allows for our staff to work collaboratively during their students’ lessons to program student learning experiences across the grade, participate in

professional learning and reflective practice experiences to continually improve our teaching and learning across the school.

The fees for Sportspro were included in our annual fees statement which is due for payment by Friday March 1. We thank you for your support of this wonderful program in our school.

New driveway fencing We are delighted to inform you that the Department of Education have commenced plans to install a fence along the entire driveway into the school. This will enhance student safety along the driveway and provide a solid barrier between our students, ensuring they stay on the footpath as they enter the school grounds. Work on this project is due for completion in June this year.

School Counsellor ServiceOur school is fortunate to have the services of a School Counsellor two days per week. Our service days for 2019 will be Monday and Tuesday (please note, this is a change from the previously communicated days on the Who’s Who).

Our school counsellor’s name is Mrs Melissa Moss. Mrs Moss is a very experienced counsellor and psychologist who has worked across many schools in NSW. If you would like to make an appointment to see Mrs Moss please contact the school office to make an appointment on her service days. Students can also be referred to the school counsellor through our Learning Support Team – should this occur you will receive a letter of permission to complete and return to your child’s teacher.

Upcoming Events for Parents:I would like to encourage parents to take advantage of the following upcoming events which are designed to promote stronger links between home and school:

• February 21 and March 7 – Social and Emotional Wellbeing Parent workshop for all families K-6. This is a two part course for parents, free of charge and run by the GOT IT! Team.

• February 27 – Maths information evening for parents K-6 – a free presentation run by our fantastic Deputy Principal, Mrs Laurinda Lomas - details on page 5

• Interrelate Family Evening for parents and children in Years 3-6 to attend together – please see details including costs later in this newsletter. Session 1 – Where Did I Come From? (Yrs 3-6) Session 2: Preparing for Puberty (Years 5 & 6, including Years 3 & 4 at parents’ discretion)

Our school is a vibrant learning community offering many opportunities for students and their extended families. Come along and learn how to support your child emotionally, socially and academically for success.

Until next time, Leesa Martin Principal

. Welcome back and simply ‘welcome’ to the new families joining our school this year.

I hope that all of your children have settled into the new school year and the regular routines are coming back easily.

The first P&C Meeting of the year went well on Wednesday night. This year we have purposely reduced the number of activities the P&C will be organising. We plan to have two or three events that focus on the social side of things and keep the fund-raising separate. With that in mind we do need a couple of ‘social butterflies’ or those looking for an easy opportunity to meet other school parents to help in the organising of these events. Here’s the email if you are curious as to what we are thinking of doing and how you could help [email protected]

In order to assist parents meet other parents we have in the past run separate evenings at the Racquet Bar up at Elanora Heights shops. It was a great venue but we don’t currently have the infrastructure in the P&C to organise this right now, so this year we have decided to pick a date and time for a combined event at Sunk Bar. Parents can also bring their kids so they can associate who the corresponding parent is for the new friend from school. If you haven’t been to Sunk Bar at Narrabeen RSL it’s the very bottom section and it will be held on a casual basis from 3pm on the March 24. No need to RSVP just turn up.

The car raffle tickets will be out again in a week or so. This is the P&C’s one major fundraiser for the year. We earnt over $10,000 last year and would like to achieve the same this year. This money went directly to the school in the same year and children this year will be climbing all over the equipment it was spent on. Ask them how good it is?!

To give you a brief idea of how the P&C has supported the school recently; last year we raised in total about $28,000 and spent a whopping $64,000. All thanks to parents’ support in that and previous years.

We are not looking to do quite the same this year but without a good effort on the car raffle we will not be able to support the school as we have. So, in short – sign the consent form to get some raffle tickets, encourage the kids to sell them and get the stubs back to us by March 27 at the latest.

The next P&C meeting is on the March 13 at 7pm. Everyone on the P&C is looking forward to another fantastic year ahead and we hope you and your children can share some of those experiences with us.

FOUND - Please contact the office if any of these belong to your child.

PITTWATER ZONE PSSA 2019Welcome back to another year of PSSA in 2019. As you may be aware our teachers have been busy selecting teams for the upcoming Summer PSSA Season. These sides are representative teams chosen to compete against the 8 other schools in our Pittwater PSSA Zone. A reminder that our Summer Season runs for 5 weeks in Term 1 and then recommences in Term 4 for the remainder of the competition including semi-finals and finals.

Congratulations to all our students who have trialled for sports this term. Our participation rates have been fantastic and we are impressed with all our students for wanting to be a part of these teams. To those students who have been successful in making teams, congratulations to you!

Please take note of training times for your team. Our coaches select times to train before and after school that suit their availability and the availability of the majority of the team, where possible. Sometimes clashes with other extra-curricular activities are unavoidable. We are asking all players to please speak to their coach if this has occurred.

The first round of the competition starts next week (Week 4). All the draws and locations for games are available via the Team App (Pittwater Zones PSSA). Additionally all results and up to the minute updates around extreme/wet weather can be found here too. I strongly suggest that if your child is involved in a PSSA sporting team that you download this app. Instructions are on the next page.

Winter PSSA TrialsWe will be running Winter PSSA Trials in Weeks 9, 10 and 11 of this term in preparation for the Winter PSSA Season in Terms 2 and 3. It is important that your child is in attendance for these trials if they wish to be considered for selection. We are unable to run further trials outside of these timeframes. If you are going to be away please let your class teacher know so that coaches can be informed.

Our Winter PSSA sports on offer are:

• Junior and Senior Rugby League

• Junior and Senior Netball

• Junior and Senior Boys Soccer

• Junior and Senior Girls Soccer

• Junior and Senior Mixed AFL (minimum 3 of either gender to be selected)

From this season onwards boys and girls are eligible to trial for rugby league and netball in the Winter PSSA Competitions. AFL is defined as ‘mixed’ as each team is required to field a minimum of 3 either gender to be eligible to gain completion points. The junior age group consists of students who are turning 8, 9 or 10 this year in Years 3-5 and the senior age groups consists of students who are turning 11, 12 or 13 this year in Years 5-6.

Thank you again everybody for your support of EHPS and PSSA Sport. We are looking forward to an amazing year on the sporting field!

Fruit and Vegetable Excitement! This week every class has explored the huge range of fresh fruits and vegetables available to us. We would like to thank Harris Farm Markets for their generosity in donating 4 boxes laden with a piece of nearly every fresh fruit or vegetable they stock. Some items had teachers scratching their heads – would you recognise mangosteen or bitter melon? To see the beauty and variety of shapes, colours, smells and tastes highlights the importance of eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables. How lucky we are to be able to buy such an abundance of Australian produce right here!

Why is it important to eat a WIDE range of fruit and vegetables? Each one contains different combinations of nutrients so eating a wide variety ensures maximum nutrition. Children need to be encouraged to try new foods, and sometimes will need repeated tasting to become used to the flavour and texture.

Take your children shopping with you and ask them to choose a new fruit or veg they haven’t tried before. Fruito-vego give an opportunity to encourage your child to eat something different. Each K-2 class is receiving a poster where children put on a sticker each time they bring a NEW fruit or veg to school for fruito-vego.

Our first FRUITO-VEGORed FRUITO/VEGO –Wednesday 20th FebruaryPlease send a red fruit or vegetable on this Wednesday. There are many delicious red options at the moment: strawberries, raspberries, nectarines, peaches, plums, apples, cherries, red papaya, dragonfruit, watermelon, tomatoes, capsicum, radish, beetroot …

Seeing such a range of different foods of one colour always interests the children and looks SO inviting. Thank you for your support in encouraging this healthy habit.

LLW@S PARENT GROUP

Interested in healthy food and exercise habits for our children?Meeting Wednesday 20th February, in Stellar room at 3.00pm

The LiveLifeWell@School parent group gives you a chance to suggest and contribute to initiatives across the school. We need some fresh faces to join our keen long-term participants. Rainbow Fruito-Vego, Make My Own Healthy Lunch and Eat a Rainbow are examples of successful ideas arising from previous LLW@S parent groups. If you can’t make the first meeting on Wed March 20, but are interested, please contact me through the office.
