William continues, “Every time I conduct and study this piece I find new revelations about it and am continually amazed at how modern and groundbreaking it would have been when it was written in 1803. And yet it was written just 12 years after Mozart died, to put it in context. Nothing like that was being written at that time! This is Beethoven trying to show the world that his deafness would not prevent him from composing great music. In fact, there is no question that, when it was performed for the first time in 1803, it was the most intense symphony ever written, the longest symphony ever written, and the Saturday, August 8th, the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra will once again grace the stage of the Cheyenne Civic Center after a five-month hiatus due to COVID-19. The Maestro explains, “these pieces both capture the essence of Beethoven: the music moves from struggle to triumph, the expression is intense and dramatic, and each piece has a revolutionary spirit. The Egmont Overture even has a musical depiction of a beheading! Yes, poor Count Lamoral of Egmont. He was a martyr for the cause of independence of the Dutch people in the 16th century. Beethoven must have really related to this historical figure because of the French and American revolutions going on in his own time. most groundbreaking symphony ever written. To experience it live with an orchestra like the CSO will surely move you.”

Between these two Beethoven bookends, CSO will perform what may be Mahler’s most well-known music. The “Adagietto” is the fourth movement of his Symphony No. 5 and scored only for strings. “Simply put, it’s an intense love offering to Alma, written in the summer of 1902, right after their marriage. He worshiped her, and it shows eloquently here, almost painfully so--especially considering the checkered relationship that plagued them almost from beginning to end,” writes scholar William Runyan.

On behalf of the CSO board, staff, and musicians we want to thank the Cheyenne Civic Center staff for all their work on the Civic Center Reopening Plan, approved by the state health department, which allows us to present these concerts. We also want to thank our concert sponsors, Taco John’s and First State Bank of Cheyenne. And especially you, our patrons, for your support, encouragement, and flexibility as we worked through the delay and especially all the changes due to COVID-19. Welcome back and we hope you enjoy the show!

The health and safety of our patrons, musicians, and staff are of the utmost importance to us! Here are a few changes that will be implemented for this performance and throughout the 2020-2021 season:

- As a courtesy to others, all patrons, musicians (when possible), and staff will be required to wear masks. Masks may only be removed when you are in your ticketed seat if you have a health-related concern. We are asking our patrons to help us protect the health of those musicians who are unable to wear masks while performing.

- Hand sanitization stations will be located at each entrance, restroom, box office, and concessions location.

- Patrons from the same household may sit together. Each household will be socially distanced in the hall with a seating chart that has been approved by the Health Department. Due to social distance restrictions, your usual season ticket seat may not be available this season.

- For the safety of our patrons and staff, tickets will only be available electronically or through the print at home option. This will allow for touchless ticket scanning at the door.

Page 2 — August 2020

WELCOME BACK! (CONT.)- Live stream tickets will also be available for most performances.

- Four (4) entry points will be utilized depending on where your seat is located. Entry points on the North and South sides of the building will be for Orchestra left and right section seating. The entry points on the East side of the building will seat the Loge and Balcony sections of the theater.

- The lobby doors and auditorium doors will open at 1:00pm for the matinee performance and 6:30pm for the evening performance.

- Coat room services have been suspended for the 2020-2021 season.

- Restrooms have been re-assigned with men’s facilities on the south side of the building on the lower level and women’s facilities on the north side of the facility on both the upper and lower levels. Restroom cues will be made in the lobbies to ensure social distancing can occur while people are waiting. Floor markers indicating 6’ distances will be placed in the line.

- Water fountains will be shut off for the 2020-2021 season. Please feel free to bring water with you. Water bottles will be permitted in the auditorium.

Congratulations to the nearly 800 Cheyenne middle school and high school students who participated and created thought-provoking pieces of art for our performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7! A total of 400 students had their artwork displayed at the Cheyenne Civic Center!

Thank you to Michele Ragaglia, Art Coordinator for LCSD #1, for organizing the art show, Cheyenne’s art teachers for inspiring their students, judges Ibby Davis, John Lyttle and Judy Schulz, and the Wyoming Hereford Ranch for sponsoring this program!

Thursday, August 6th, the CSO chamber players will present Beethoven in the Barn at the Wyoming Hereford Ranch. CSO presents Baroque in the Barn at WHR every other year, but this year’s performance was renamed in honor of Beethoven’s 250th Anniversary. It was originally scheduled for May and has been adapted due to COVID-19, but we are confident the original western spirit remains.

The performance has moved from its usual location at the Sale Barn to the Events Center. The larger space will allow the audience to be socially-distanced as they enjoy the concert. Patrons are asked to bring their own folding or lawn chairs to sit in for the performance. Unfortunately, the chuck-wagon dinner is not possible, but our generous hosts, Anna Marie and Sloan Hales, will provide boxed sandwiches as an alternative. The dress is Western Wear for both concert-goers and musicians.

The concert will feature seven musicians performing all Beethoven all the time. The selections will be performed by varying sized ensembles ranging from solo piano to a sextet, including string quartet and two horns. The Maestro will even make a special appearance.

A special thank you to David Niemann for proving the piano for the performance. This event is sold out!
