In the midst of the darkness we light the lights. On Chanukah we celebrate the miracle of the light. What was the light, anyway? It was a sign from the One Above that He was with us in our struggle then, just as He is with us today. The essential lesson of Chanukah is emunah (belief/faith). Whether Judah Maccabee and his Maccabees facing down the Seleucid Greek army many times its size, or a hospital patient fighting to over-come the odds, we all need the faith to believe that however bleak things look at the moment in the end all work our for the best according to His plan. Today Israel finds itself again surrounded on all sides by those sworn to her destruction. Iran vows to wipe Israel off the map with her "peaceful" nuclear weapons program. But if the nations ignore the gravity of the issue, Israel has no such luxury. We bless Israel's leaders with courage and fortitude. May Hashem guide the surgeon's arm with the skill, precision and accuracy required.

Edition 566 December 2011 Kislev/Tevet 5772 A monthly publication of Temple Israel of the Poconos
The rabbis ask: if the miracle of the light was that it stayed lit for an extra seven days, then why not celebrate for just seven days? The reason why we celebrate for eight days is because the greatest miracle was by us, that we had the faith to light at all, indeed to fight at all! So too may Israel's leaders and military have the faith to do what needs to be done in order to prevent the nuclear annihilation of the Jewish state of Israel. Please join us Thursday night, the third night of Chanukah, at 4:45 PM, as we come together as a community for our annual Chanukah indoor lighting cele-bration, complete with food, music, dreidels and donuts! And then as a group, we will all head out to Court House Square to join with Chabad in their annual outdoor lighting ceremony in a show of Jewish unity. CHAG URIM SAMEACH!

DIVINE COMMUNICATION?
In an early scene in Shakespeare’s tragedy, Hamlet, the brooding protagonist who has just experienced a traumatic visit and story from his slain father’s ghost, says to his loyal friend, Horatio, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamed of in your Philosophy." Hamlet cannot be referring merely to the belief in the existence of human souls. After death, for that belief was already an integral part of the Roman Catholic religion. So what "things in heaven and earth" could Hamlet have had in mind?
Whatever the answer, it probably refers to matters beyond the scope of the known philoso-phy and theology prevailing at that time. I suggest that it concerned the extraordinary event that Hamlet had recently experienced– the visitation and story of his father’s ghost–that prompted him to refer to the mysteries that exist beyond the scope of philosophy or a university education.
The Torah is our primary source of information on this subject. In the Torah we learn that God speaks to Adam and Eve, to the Patriarchs, to Moses, to King David, to his son Solomon, and to His prophets. We speak to God in our prayers to Him, in our belief and faith in Him, and in our obedience to His commandments. The point is that communication between God and human beings may be in words or in the context of a seeming miraculous event. The Exodus, the division of the Red Sea, the giving of the Ten Commandments, the trek of the Israelites through the Wilderness to Canaan, the survival of the children of Israel despite enemy occupation, many years of exile and dispersion, attest to Divine intercession in behalf of His "Chosen People." In other words, these miraculous events do not need spoken words to assure the Israelites of Divine protection. Just as a picture is said to be worth a thousand words, so can meaningful events convey a message: if we take the time and make the effort to search for one.
Despite these modes of Divine communication, we are rarely aware of them today because of our busy involvement in the practical concerns of daily living. Besides, we tend to be skepti-cal and wary about experiences that we cannot weigh, measure, or actually perceive. Yet I believe that "God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform," and that He communi-cates with us in non-verbal ways. For example, I have discovered that spending many weeks in the hospital and in rehabilitation was a blessing in disguise, for it gave me the opportu-nity to meditate on what seemed to be adverse experiences and to find their unexpected ad-vantages.
The Biblical story of Joseph provides an instructive example of God’s communicating with man by means of a prophetic dream-vision. When Joseph reveals his dream that he will be-come the leader of his family, his father Jacob and his envious brothers believe that his dream foretells the future. Their belief is vindicated when the story ends with Joseph’s be-coming the Pharaoh’s overseer as a reward for his foreknowledge and advice on how to adapt to the impending seven years of drought that Egypt will suffer.
Most people today would probably describe a prophetic dream-vision as just anecdotal, noth-ing more than a personal experience or coincidence. Thus far, direct Divine communication with humans cannot be empirically proved or disproved! –Norman Gelber

In the Carmel region, east of Haifa, and one of Israel’s beauty spots, a fire has to date claimed 42 people, 1.5 million trees, 13,000 evacuated.
The global help for firefighting has been answered by Turkey, Germany, Egypt, Jordan, France, U.K. and USA and others showing co-operation is still possible.
World WIZO said all children needing care will be absorbed into nearby WIZO day care centers. They plan to hold post-trauma workshops for children and adults, prison wardens, firefighters and all families affected.
Israel has never before been menaced by a natural disaster of this caliber, the cause of which is not clear, though the failure of autumn to bring sustained rains is probably been one of the prime causes of the catastrophic fires.

CHANUKAH BLESSINGS There are three Brachos (blessings) which are recited when the Chanukah candles are lit.
"Baruch ata Ado-nai, Elo-heinu Melech ha'olam, Asher kid'shanu b'mitzvosav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Chanukah"
Blessed are You, Hashem our G-d, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments, and has commanded us to Kindle the Chanukah light.
"Baruch ata Ado-nai, Elo-heinu Melech ha'olam, She'asah nisim la'avoseinu, bayamim ha'hem baz'man hazeh"
Blessed are You, Hashem our G-d, King of the universe, Who has wrought miracles for our forefathers, in those days at this season.
Recited on the first night only "Baruch ata Ado-nai, Elo-heinu Melech ha'olam, She'hecheyanu, vekiye-manu vehigi'anu laz'man hazeh"
Blessed are You, Hashem our G-d, King of the universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season.
After reciting the blessings and lighting the candles, the following paragraphs should recited or sung.
These lights we kindle upon the miracles, the wonders, the salvations, and the battles which you performed for our forefathers in those days at this season through Your holy priests. During all eight days of Chanukah these lights are sacred, and we are not permitted to make ordinary use of them, but to look at them in order to express thanks and praise to Your great Name for Your miracles, Your wonders and Your salvations.
Page 7 TEMPLE ISRAEL OF THE POCONOS Edition 566
"Ma'oz tzur yeshu'asi Lecha na'eh leshabe'ach
Tikone bais tefilasi Ve'sham todah nezabe'ach
Le'es Tachin Mabe'ach Mitzar ham'nabe'ach
Az egmor beshir mizmor Chanukas hamizbe'ach."
O mighty Rock of my salvation,
to praise You is a delight. Restore my house of prayer and there we will bring a
thanksgiving offering. When You will have prepared the
slaughter for the blaspheming foe, Then I shall complete with a song of
hymn the dedication of the Alter.
