FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY

As you read this article, Iwill be beginning the firstof two consecutive monthsof Sabbatical leave grantedby the Board of Directors(the third will be February,2012). Before leaving the

area, I wanted to make sure that as many of the ar-rangements and details as it is possible to make for theHigh Holy Days would be finished so that I could goaway and really have some “down time.” All of thispreparation has kept the Holy Days and their messagein my consciousness, and as a result, I have been do-ing some thinking about the themes of the High HolyDays that I’d like to share with you.

First among these is the idea of speaking truth topower. In our everyday lives speaking truth to poweris sometimes seen as risky, even foolish, behavior, because the consequences are often unknown in ad-vance, and if the “power” doesn’t like the “truth” youoffer, then the powerful could respond in ways thatcould be counterproductive or harmful in any numberof ways. Yet in our tradition we see numerous exam-ples of this kind of behavior, as far back as the Bible, where Abraham confronts God about the justice ofwiping out the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Laterin the Bible Moses confronts Pharaoh about the plightof the Hebrews. These kinds of Jewish role modelshave been instructive for us as we Jews have foundourselves as (sometimes reluctant) leaders of, or atleast participants in, organizations and movementsthat are dedicated to social change and societal im-provement. Movements such as the Labor Movement,Womens’ Suffrage, the anti-war movements, the GayRights Movement, etc., just to name a few, have allbeen places where Jews have been prominent and inthe forefront of the various calls for justice.

I wonder, though, how often we really see ourselvesas “the power”. In America, power is said to belong tothe people because, in a country under the rule of law,a country based on democratic principles, it is the peo-ple who have the right and the privilege to elect peo-ple to positions of authority, to hold those in authorityaccountable. If or when the people are dissatisfied

with the way elected officials do what they wereelected to do, the people can exercise their power and, through the ballot box, remove others from office andreplace them with those they deem more suitable. Butif we are dissatisfied and do nothing but complainwithout being willing to do what is necessary to rightthings, then we should really forfeit our right to com-plain. In other words, the blame game gets us no-where; it clearly doesn’t offer constructive alternativesto problems, and without positive options there can beno forward movement.

The same is true in our little microcosm of a commu-nity here at Temple Israel. I have sat through almostevery Board meeting at the Temple since I became itsrabbi in 1996, and never have I seen a Board struggleas hard or as long or as diligently in trying to fix along-term problem as I have seen this past year. If youthink your patience was tried as you waited in vain fordues statements, only imagine how frustrating it wasfor the Board to have to say month after month thatthe books were not yet in good enough shape to pro-duce reliable dues statements. For those of you whofinally received statements, many of you found themto be in error, even after all the waiting. And so thefrustration and anger grew on all sides, as accusationsof incompetence – or even malfeasance – began to beheard. As that continued, fingers of blame started topoint in several directions at once. But not one ofthose finger pointers ever offered to help solve theproblems or even offer any positive or practical solu-tions to a seemingly-intractable and perplexing prob-lem. Instead, they prophesied doom.

So I wish to speak truth to power in this, my bully

pulpit. To those members of our congregation who

can with ease tell us that something is wrong, that the

consequences will be dire, and who can, and often try

to, explain who is at fault without offering to assist in

solving the problems, you are not helping. But if and

when you are able and willing to step up to the plate

to offer constructive suggestions in a constructive way

and are willing to help shoulder the burden of keepingContinued on page 6

EDUCATION NEWS

Dear Temple Israel Commu-nity:

When I first moved to Cali-fornia I must admit I had a

culture shock. People I met would appear friendly butI heard later that people were taken aback by my style, interpreting my directness as “in your face.” As aNew Yorker, I like to know where things stand. Idon’t generally mince words and I try to say what Ithink. I have learned to couch my opinions in a softersell, but I am told I still have an edge. What can I say?Once a New Yorker…..

What I want to assure you is that my directness shouldnot be interpreted as mean-spirited or uninterested inwhat you have to say. On the contrary, I very muchappreciate hearing what works and what doesn’t workfor you and your children. I am not averse to changingthings up to create a better educational experience.

I encourage you to be direct with me as I am with you.And now is the time to do it. I spend the summermonths adjusting and working on curriculum for eachgrade and for each class and if you have ideas youwant to share with me, please don’t hesitate to get intouch with me about it.

I thought I would be concrete about Religious Schoolexpectations so we all know where we stand:

My expectations of the students

Attending classes every Wednesday and Sunday.

Arriving on time and leaving on time.

Respecting teachers, classmates, myself and the

Rabbi.

Participating and being open to learning.

My expectations of parents

Making sure children attend Religious School

regularly, and arrive and leave on time.

Supporting your child in his/her participation in

class-led Shabbats and attending Friday night ser-

vices.

Attending school-wide events.

Fulfilling parent volunteer hours.

Your expectations of me

Being available to parents and students with ques-

tions or concerns.

Helping children get the most out of their Jewish

education.

Framing the Jewish educational program so con-

tent is relevant and inspiring.

Creating an atmosphere where learning can thrive

and a love for all things Jewish can flourish.

Parents: if I do appear “too in your face”, please knowthat my intentions are good. If my style appears off-putting, know that I am approachable and open to sug-gestion and changes. We are a small school and be-cause we are small, I am in a position to attend to indi-vidual needs and circumstances. If you or your childhas a personal issue that needs addressing, I am herefor you. Feel free to email me or call my cell phoneand we can discuss how you and your child can getyour needs addressed.

I want your child to attend Temple Israel ReligiousSchool happily. I want your child to be turned on andbe proud of their Jewishness. And I want you as par-ents to be assured that your child is getting a top rateJewish education.

Enjoy your summer!

B’Shalom,

Mindy Myers,

the doors open to a very small synagogue that is struggling in devastating economic times, then I encourageyou to do so.

Because every member of Temple Israel constitutes the “power” that is the community, I, as your rabbi, ad-dress you with the truth that complaining and finger-pointing don’t belong here. Disagreements are welcomeas long as they are expressed in ways that are not destructive or demeaning, and active participation in doingwhat it takes to hold us together and keep us together are always most welcome, too.

In the more than decade and a half that I have served this congregation I have seen how beautiful, strong, lov-ing, nurturing, and vital it can be here. There is absolutely no reason that it should ever be any other way. Please put your positive, best foot forward and help us continue to be the best that we can be.

Shalom,Rabbi Allen B. Bennett

THE MIDWAY SHELTER COOKING PROJECT

The Temple Israel Dinner Cooks are proud to have been preparing dinner once a month for the residents of theMidway Shelter for the past several years. Many religious and community organizations in Alameda take partin this activity, so that the women and children who are putting their lives back together at the Shelter get anourishing, healthy dinner each day.

In June, Bev Blatt, Nancy Freed, Gretel Gates, Mary Gold, and Alison Harris prepared and delivered ham-burgers with sliced tomatoes and onions, buns, and condiments, cole slaw, barbecued beans, cookie bars, andjuice. Due to a space conflict that day, we cooked in Alison’s kitchen that day. We always have a good timevisiting with each other and catching up on each others’ lives while we cook! And, as Mary Gold frequentlysays, “Many hands make work light”!

We cook on the third Wednesday of each month. Our next cooking session will be on June 15. Four or fivevolunteers are needed, and if you’d like to help, please contact Alison Harris at 521-3375 or [email protected].
