NCA completed the long course season with a first place finish in

the LC Junior Olympics. With many of the senior swimmers going to Nationals after JO’s we were short a lot of our big guns. The age group program really stepped up. Gretchen Horbol was the hi point winner for the 11/12 girls. NCA broke several records. Katie Tomkinson broke the 15-18 100 free JO record from 1990, Graham Smith broke the 13/14 200 back JO and SI record from 2005, Kendyl Stewart broke the 13/14 200 back JO record from 2007, Jamey Lyon broke the 13/14 JO record in the 1500 from 1997 and Eric Hedlin broke the 15-18 JO record in the 1500 set in 2003.

We also had several record setting relay teams. The 15-18 girls set

the 400 free JO record (Katie T, Mikkel-Ane Stipe, Jessie Schmitt and Kelsey Hall). They also set the 400 medley relay record with Allie Knight, Jessie S, Noel Elgamal, and Katie T. The 13-14 boys set an SI and JO record from 2004 in the 800 free relay (Jamey L, Santeri Salomaki, Justin Schweigert and Gra-ham Smith). The 13/14 girls set a JO and SI record from 2005 in the 400 free (Kendyl, Monica Dornick, Margaret Guo and Herendira Alanis). The 13/14 girls set a JO and SI record in the 400 medley relay from 2005 (Kendyl, Kelsey, Heren-dira and Monica). The 11/12 girls broke a JO record from 2006 in the 200 med-ley relay (Rochelle Dong, Brooke Stites, Gretchen Horbol and Annabel Tomes).

Learn to be a Meet Official

by Coach Sue

Escrip is an easy way for you to help the NCA Boosters

raise funds at no extra cost to you! When you shop a percent-age will be given back to the team, at no cost to you!

If you register for Escrip, your swimmer may help to win a

pizza party for their pool site! If 80% of the families register at any one site, that entire site is eligible for a pizza party, compliments of the Del Mar Chamber of Commerce. This is a painless way to raise money for the team. Some of you did it at the Swim-a-thon, others at the Holiday Party; now we just need the rest of you!

On the homepage of the team website (ncaq.org),

please go to What’s New and click on Escrip. You can sign up online very quickly. I did it and now everytime I shop at Vons the team gets a percentage and it doesn’t cost me a thing. How many times can you help an organization without donat-ing? This way everyone wins!!! You get the groceries you were getting anyway and NCA gets needed funds for team events and education.

We will run this contest through the end of March.

Email me [email protected] if you have questions.

Thank you to the Del Mar-Chamber of Commerce for

supporting us in this fundrais-ing effort!

At NCA, we truly appreciate our meet officials and the essential role they play at swim

meets. If you’re considering becoming a meet official, please email [email protected] for details on the perks of this very important job.

Basically, there are three steps to becoming a meet official: attend a training clinic (watch

for information on the team website (NCAQ.org) under “Events”), take an online test, then shadow 6 times. Thanks for your support.

North Coast Aquatics honored meet officials at the annual awards program in 2008

Senior Classic Volunteers Make Meet Possible

NCA hosted the snack bar and hospital-ity for the annual Senior Classic Meet

beginning on Friday, Feb. 13 through Monday, Feb. 16 at the JCC. After all the parents of the athletes competing at the meet signed up to volunteer, we were still short so other families stepped up and helped out.

A big thank you from the Boosters for working and braving the cold and

rain.

Dorados Help Family of

Former Teammate

NCA swimmers and families have a reputation for generously giving their

time, energy, and resources to help victims of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and local wildfires. Recently the team had an opportunity to help a former teammate who lost her home when a jet crashed in UTC. Thank you to everyone who partici-pated.

We have begun developing a series of video clinics designed to al-low coaches to focus more attention on developing and improving

swimmers stroke technique.

These clinics utilize the Dartfish computer software program that allows digital video to be captured and analyzed, both above and

below the water. Coaches at the clinics will work one-on-one with the participants, reviewing their strokes and giving them specific stroke ele-ments to work on as they go through training.

Several days after the clinic, each swimmer will be given a CD of the video of their swims, which they can then watch on their own com-

puter and share with their site coach. These clinics will be 2 hours and usually offered on Saturday mornings, depending on meet schedules and coach availability, and will have an additional cost. The schedule of these clinics will be posted on the website and you may sign up online. Thanks for your interest.

May 9th Events

There will be a clinic run by the NCA coaches and Senior swimmers on Saturday May 9th at the JCC. The time

frame will be in the morning, but more specifics will be out later. If you met your Swimathon minimum financial requirement you are invited to this clinic. You still have time to qualify for the clinic by turning in your minimum requirements by March 31st.

Also on May 9th we will have a mandatory team photo (if you already purchased one, this one will be free).

The time for this will be announced. Please make note of this now, so we can have 100% in the photo this time around. You will need to wear a solid navy, solid black suit, or a team suit to the photo. If you are only coming to the photo, you will need to be at the JCC for only 20-30 min. Email Sue with questions.

AG1- Deniesse Vankat

Deniesse swims at the J with AG1 and has worked her way into the pre-senior track.

She came from the YMCA program and had never experienced Coach Jeff ’s workouts. Throughout this season, Deniesse has shown great dedica-tion and effort in her training and has also done an awesome job at meets dropping times on her races. Deniesse’s favorite stroke is butterfly.

AG2- Hazel Friedman

Hazel swims at the J with AG2. As she transi-tioned in from AG3, she was faced with great

challenges such as longer distances and tougher intervals in AG2. She puts her head down and gets to work during all her workouts. Recently, Hazel had a phenomenal meet at the Pentathlon and has demonstrated how hard work pays off. Hazel’s free and fly have become strokes of choice during racing.

December

AG1- Jason O’Brien

Jason is one of our new upcoming boys in the program. At only 12 years old, Jason has

shown great potential and performance, knock-ing out his personal best time and the competi-tion in the 500 free. He is also on the pre-senior track enjoying Coach Jeff ’s Saturday morning survivor workouts and applying himself daily in practice.

AG2- Calvin Leather

Calvin swims at the J with AG2. He is a dedi-cated breastroker and a hard worker at heart.

Calvin has been stepping up his level in training over the last season and has become fit to chal-lenge all his intervals during workouts and suc-ceeds. This will be an interesting year for him.

Blue

Sarah Ekaireb - Sarah always puts forth her best effort in workout. She pays at-

tention to suggestions made regarding her strokes and never complains, even though she’s shivering and turning purple, she still stays in the water and does what is asked of her.

Ag3

Zoe Kleinfled - Zoe is always a leader both in the pool and out of the water.

She is friendly, works hard, and gets along well with everyone. She has taken the ini-tiative to lead her lane and is always will-ing to be my demonstrator.

December

Blue

Madison Pascoe - Has really been work-ing on her form and has made dra-

matic changes within her time with the team. She always has a big smile and gets along well with everyone. She works hard and it shows that she really tries to im-prove.

AG3

Paeru Pold - Pearu has made a wonder-ful turnaround. He is a good athlete

and is involved in a few different things, but this year he has really devoted time and energy to the sport of swimming. I have seen him really focusing on his form and leading by example.

Age Group 3

Aspen Luedtke:

Aspen did a great job in November. She worked incredibly hard in Age Group 3 and went through a brief transitioning into Age Group 2. She did so well that she quickly moved up to AG2 permanently where she is now leading her lane most days (even moving up a lane on some free sets) and continues to make progress. Aspen is also an excellent volleyball player.

Age Group 2

Sean Gartland

Sean started out the season swimming in a lane with his friends. With a little “en-couragement” from his coach he moved up to a lane with more challenging inter-vals and did such a nice job he has now moved up to Age Group 1. Sean is finally taking ownership in his swimming and continues to improve every day.

Age Group 1

Scott Clausen

Scott has had an incredible start to this season. In his first ever 1000 free he re-corded a National Age Group Reportable Time (NRT), which puts him in the top few in the country in his age group! He has also recorded AAAA times in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Scott is highly motivated and wants to succeed in this sport. Keep up the hard work Scott--the sky’s the limit!

Age Group 3

Cooper Wood

Cooper has had a great month. He has shown tremendous improvement in his strokes, work ethic, and attitude towards swimming. He is currently transitioning to Age Group 2 and will move up there full time starting in January. He likes to train and train hard, and it is obvious he wants to get better. Cooper, you are well on your way!

Age Group 2

Chase Ladman

Chase has been working really hard this month. His attendance and work ethic has picked up lately and he has seen the results. He qualified for the AA meet in Cerritos in the 50 and 100 fly and had a couple of great swims. His stroke technique has also improved. Keep it up, Chase!

Age Group 1

Katya Rakotz

Katya has consistently had the highest attendance rate of any swimmer at Carlsbad, and it shows in her swims. She works as hard as anyone in the pool, making pre-senior intervals during practice. She has seen her times in the distance freestyle and breaststroke continue to drop and is well on her way to qualifying for some fast meets. Katya is a pleasure to coach and a wonderful swimmer.

Amador, who is a member of both United States Swimming and Federacion Mexicana de Natacion, is a great swimmer to coach and has the re-spect of his fellow lanemates.

December

ANDREW JEONG

Andrew has been working hard since joining our program in Sep-tember. Working on all his strokes, Andrew has shown hard work and determination by working on all of his strokes and speed. After only 2 months with NCA, Andrew moved up a lane and has even been the lane leader. We will see many fast times from this 8th grader in sea-sons to come!

Favorite stroke or event: Butterfly

Thomas is always looking for a challenge. Still new to Blue he has come a far way in a short amount of time. Thomas is working on executing each stroke to its per-fection.

Savera Soin White-Ballys T/TH

Favorite stroke or event: Freestyle

Savera is newer to the team. She is a great listener and has adapted to the “Big” pool challenges. Although sometimes overwhelmed, she goes for the gold.

Melody Sadri-Naini White-Ballys T/TH

Favorite stroke or event: All of them!

Melody is still new to the team; however she comes to practice with a smile on her face everyday. She tries really hard to understand everything and put it to use. It is awesome to see her face light up when she finally gets a drill or skill that we have been working on.

Happy 30th

Family2Family Fund

Our thoughts are with all of you during this time of economic crisis and uncertainty. An NCA family recently suggested that the Boosters spearhead the collection of dona-tions by NCA families designated specifical-ly for struggling NCA families as a second-ary hardship scholarship. Donations to the Boosters are tax deductible. In addition, the Boosters will be giving complimentary thank you gifts (i.e. 2008 NCA memorabilia) for every $25 donated.Details remain to be ironed out but if you want to participate now - - to help strug-gling NCA families right away - - simply send your check for any amount, made out to NCA Boosters, to Sue via poolmail or by regular mail to the NCA Boosters address on the website. Please indicate on your check that your donation is for the Family-2Family Fund (rather than Swim-a-thon, for example). Thank you for your kindness and concern.NCA BoostersPMB #2323830 Valley Centre Dr., Ste 705San Diego, CA 92130

2NCAQ.org Good Luck at Far Westerns, Dorados!

Well this year it was a very exciting battle between

Pacific Swim and NCA. PS edged out NCA by 58 points. It came down to the end of the meet. We are so very proud of all our athletes for their speed in the pool, determination and their wonderful display of sportsmanship. We had out-standing swims. Here are some highlights:

Jamey Lyon (13/14) broke...no, not just broke...SHATTERED

3 huge individual records set back in 1982. He set new San Diego Imperial and JO records that will stand for a long time to come. He started on Friday night with the 1,000 in a record setting time of 9:27.54! He con-tinued his streak in the 500 with an unbelievable time of 4:35.62. His last individual event was the mile on Sunday where he set his last SI/JO record in the 1650 at 15:51.17!! Way to go Jamey!!!

The 13/14 boys relay team started things off on Fri-

day night by setting a new JO record in the 800 free relay. The team of Graham Smith, Scott Clausen, Jason O’Brien and Jamey Lyon got the meet off to a record breaking start!!

Graham went on to set a new JO record in the 100 back,

swimming it in a blazing 53.72. He also broke the JO record too in the 500 free clocking a 4:42.10!!! 2 NCA swimmers go-ing under the JO record!!!

Kendyl Stewart, 14, rounded off the record setting with

a new SI/JO record in the 200 back. She took that record from sweet 13-year old Kendyl Stew-art in 2008!!!

The entire team did an excep-tional job. Individual events

score top 16 and many of our athletes fell into this category. Many thanks for the senior lead-ers and for Allie T for the great t-shirts!!

In an effort to get this out in the newsletter before LC JOs,

I am not including the names of our finalists and top 16. You can go to si-swimming.com for all the results!! Way to go NCA!

Thank Youto the NCA Boosters and coach-es for the privilege of editing the team newsletter the past year and a half....and to everyone for putting up with me and my camera at meets, parties, clinics, and practice! Special thanks to Coach Sue, Coach Jeff, Jeff Stites, and Shelly Stewart for all your help. I set up an email account just for parents to send photos and coaches to send reports to: [email protected] team is BOOM Dynamite! See you at JO-Max this weekend, Belinda Rodgers
