Purpose of Technology
• human welfare
• to make life easier
• to acquire new knowledge
![Page 5: Technology is the Ism of the New Millennium](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061200/5477150fb4af9f76108b45e1/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
History
• the human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools
• the pre-historical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food
• the invention of the wheel helped humans in traveling in and controlling their environment

The Industrial Revolution
• the Industrial Revolution was built on rapid advances in technology
• period from the 18th to the 19th century where major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation, and technology had a profound effect on the socioeconomic and cultural conditions of the times.

Technology – a boon or a bane
In many ways, technology simplifies life.• The rise of a leisure class• A more informed society• Sets the stage for more complex learning tasks• Increases multi-tasking • Global networking• Creates denser social circles• Cheaper prices• Greater specialization in jobs
![Page 9: Technology is the Ism of the New Millennium](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061200/5477150fb4af9f76108b45e1/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
In other ways, technology complicates life.
• Pollution is a serious problem in a technologically advanced society
• The increase in transportation technology has brought congestion in some areas
• New forms of danger existing as a consequence of new forms of technology, such as the first generation of nuclear reactors
![Page 10: Technology is the Ism of the New Millennium](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022061200/5477150fb4af9f76108b45e1/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
• New forms of entertainment, such as video games and internet access could have possible social effects on areas such as academic performance
• Increased probability of some diseases and disorders, such as obesity
• Social separation of singular human interaction. Technology has increased the need to talk to more people faster.
• Structural unemployment• Anthropogenic climate change

Technology Transfer• sharing of skills, knowledge, technologies,
methods of manufacturing, samples of manufacturing and facilities among governments and other institutions
• to ensure that scientific and technological developments are accessible to a wider range of users who can then further develop and exploit the technology into new products, processes, applications, materials or services.

Information Age
• Computer Age or Information Era, is an idea that the current age will be characterized by the ability of individuals to transfer information freely, and
• to have instant access to knowledge that would have been difficult or impossible to find previously.

Information Technology• "the acquisition, processing, storage and
dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics-based combination of computing and telecommunications".
• IT professionals perform data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as management and administration of entire systems.
