“The words we use to describe play belong for the most part to aesthetics, terms with which we try to describe the effects of beauty: tension, poise, balance, contrast, variation, solution, resolution. Play is
invested with the noblest qualities we are capable of perceiving in things: rhythm and harmony.”
Johan Huizinga (1872-1945)

I want to emphasize that these insights into the human brain will have a profound impact not just on us scientists but also on the humanities, and indeed they may even help us bridge what C.P. Snow called the two cultures - science on the one hand and arts, philosophy and humanities on the other.

Quote by Bill Gaver, Designing for Homo Ludens,
(2002)
”What does designing for Homo Ludens imply for our methodologies?
How can we invent and develop systems that legitimise wonder, even encourage it?
How do we encourage people to meander, rather than to accomplish tasks with speed?”

Wish > Statement

‘Ann’
Ann has a special knack for finding inspiration and grounding her work in everyday terrains where people are active.Cynthia Hathaway - designer
Ann throws herself into experiencing first hand existing rituals in order to understand and then learn how to add to them.
Ann also designs with self sufficiency in mind, where the participant can take control of the circumstance.
Her research process is honest but quirky, and therefore interesting and relevant. As much as Ann’s work presents an end experience, we know that the journey to get there is just as important.

Sunday, June 21, 2009
Only those who risk going to far (in design), can possibly find out how far one can go ...
I’m thinking about combinations with technology, new experiences and the ‘look’ of designs.

“The next care to be taken, in respect of the Senses, is a supplying of their infirmities with Instruments, and as it were, the adding of artificial Organs to the natural. (...) and as glasses have highly promoted our seeing...there may be found many mechanical inventions to improve our other senses of hearing, smelling, tasting, touching”
Sir Robert Hook, 1665

We have seen the emergence of accessibility to 'soft' technology. I think Industrial Designers can take a large part in making physical technology accessible to the many, allowing individuals to literally shape their own world.

‘Loewy keeps one eye on the imagination and one eye on the cash register.’ [Charles Luckman, Lever Brothers]
I strongly believe Industrial Design’s prosperity is directly related to the prosperity of the customers it
serves. As such, I wish it becomes an integral part of our domain’s vision. I share this view with the father of
Industrial Design: Raymond Loewy, whose famous quotes leave no room for misinterpretation.
‘Industrial design keeps the customer happy, his client in the black and the designer busy.’*
‘Between two products equal in price, function and quality, the one with the
most attractive exterior will win.’*
