SaaS model: Multi-Tenant infrastructure

• Live Web and Application servers created in a VPC that spans multiple AZs

• Database servers linked using real time replication (SQL Server Always On Availability Groups)

• Database servers use AWS Elastic Block Store for all live storage

• Separate database schema for each customer

• All Tenants use servers in all AZs simultaneously

• Non-production environments (2) are extra Tenants in the same infrastructure

Backups and Disaster Recovery

Database backup schedule:

• Transaction Log backups every 15 minutes (1 days retention)

• Differential backups every 8 hours (14 days retention)

• Full backups weekly (30 days retention)

• Backups are performed on-line to maximise system availability

Snapshots of all Elastic Block Storage (EBS) volumes are taken daily

• Snapshots are retained for 30 days, then released

• Snapshots are synchronised to other AZs immediately (multiple locations) for maximum durability

Database backups are taken to EBS volumes, which is snapshotted to AWS S3 storage

• AWS S3 storage provide “11 9s” (99.9999999%) durability

Connectivity

Connectivity is via the public Internet

All access by clients is via HTML 5 compliant browsers (latest versions of Chrome, IE11, Edge, Safari)

• Platform independent (Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android etc.)

• No local software installs required

Data in transit is encrypted via https using SSL/TLS 1.2

• Using standard https ports

Low bandwidth requirements

• Each active user will consume approximately 50Kbps to 100Kbps of bandwidth dependant on activity

• Latency: Sub 150ms is recommended

• Applications will function with higher latencies but certain functions may suffer in terms of responsiveness
