IntroductionThe purpose o f this projec t is to illustrate the ma ny d ifferent wa ys tha t the Univer-

sity of South Florida (USF) is pursuing a gree ner o r more e nvironme nta lly a wa re p a th. The

institution ha s bee n wo rking tow ards this goa l sinc e a round 2008 and ha s ma de m uc h

progress in their effo rt: be it in more rene wa ble ma terials utilized for construction, or im-

p roving effic ienc y throughout the camp us to eliminate wa ste, USF is show ing tha t it is a t

the forefront o f the g reen moveme nt. Its amb itions a re va st eno ugh that it ma y eq ual or

surpa ss even the mo st p restigious of g ree n c olleges or universities. The sta tistica l da ta

ob ta ined from loc a l resources and a n interview with Dr.Goswa mi, a lea d resea rc her

tray the wa ys in whic h USF is mo ving forwa rd to va st susta inab ility for the future.

The United Sta tes, and eve n more the entire w orld , over the past yea rs has been

portraying b eing g reen as a very imp ortant p a rt of its c ulture. Ads in the m ed ia show

b le prod uc ts such a s shop ping ba gs, et c etera de mo nstra ting to the ma ss pop ulous

that being g reen is a very imp ortant step towards being happier and hea lthier. A uni-

versity, suc h a s USF, is full of young stud ents in the prime age of viewers and fans of the

sta rs in p op c ulture p romoting said hab its and have b een struck with interest in their be -

SustainabilityThe University of South Florida is b reaking boundaries with regard to pursuing

ha llma rks of the gree n movem ent. The University is ma king p rogress in a number of a r-

ea s, to include susta inab le fo od gree n initiatives in energy c onsump tion, proper wa ste

ma nag ement a nd rec ycling, a nd responsible p urchasing of vital items for sc hool op era-

    tion.

USF op erates under the a ssump tion that the food tha t we c onsume as peop le in

our da ily lives has a g enuine impac t on our

hea lth, beha vior, and de meano r as well as

our loc a l ec ono my and e nvironm ent. The Uni-

versity is ded ica ted to a mo re wholesom e

Energy and Energy Conversion Laboratory a t the Uni-

versity of Florida in Gainesville, and the Co -direc tor of

the Clea n Energy Resea rch Center a t the University

of South Florida . At USF, he is involved in va rious re-

sea rc h invo lving sola r pow er and its applic a tions: The

key foc us of his resea rc h is the storag e of g athered

solar energy in order to m ake it ava ilab le for use

when the sun is not shining . He has pub lished seven

boo ks and holds five US Pa tents and one wo rldwide p a tent. Befo re he c ame to USF, he

received the awa rd of resea rc h found a tion profe ssor at The University of Florida . He is

the Ed itor-in-Chief o f Ad va nc es in Solar Energy, pub lished by the America n Sola r Energy

Soc iety (ASES) and the Solar Energy journal, pub lished by the Inte rnationa l Solar Energy

Soc iety (ISES) ; and is a past assoc iate o f the Journa l of Solar Eng ineering. He has a lso

c haired a numb er of task forces that ha ve a dvised Cong ress and the fed eral admin-

istra tion on e nergy p olic y. His resea rc h ha s eve n ea rned him the ho nor of spea king to

the United Nat ions on b eha lf of World Susta inab le Energy.

Dr. Goswa mi feels tha t interest in solar energy d eve lopm ent is dep end ent o n ga s

and oil pric es. In the 1970s and ea rly 1980s the wo rld experienced its first shoc k in o il

p rice s causing them to rise d rastica lly. This was a w akeup c a ll to the rest of the wo rld,

who respond ed with the be ginnings of solar pow er develop me nt. Then in the 1990s

and 2000s as oil pric es d rop ped , muc h o f the wo rld started losing interest in these things

and sta rted going a bout the ir lives as if nothing has c hanged . Now tha t oil p rices have

risen a ga in, interest has c ome b ac k to the subjec t of renewa ble ene rgy. Now tha t the

dem and for energy is higher now tha n eve r, the resea rc h tha t Dr. Goswa mi is doing is

vital for the ec ono my. University of South Florida bringing som eo ne w ith suc h wond erful

resea rc h from anothe r institution show s the imp ortanc e o f his impa c t and knowled ge

base, a s we ll as its dete rmination to bec ome mo re ene rgy efficient. Using $4 million dol-

lars in sta te and fed eral grant mo ney, Dr. Goswa mi is going to build a solar field and

storag e system next to the USF Resea rc h Park in the hopes tha t he c an show how en-

ergy ca n be c aptured, stored, and then p ut ba c k in to the elec trica l grid . The key to

this storage w ill be using energy pe llets tha t he spec ially de signe d. These p ellets will

store ene rgy in the form o f hea t a fter it is cap tured from the solar pa nels. Onc e re-

leased , the hea t tha t these p ellets will then conta in will be used to tu rn turb ines and

c rea te e lec tric ity. This storage system will a llow the sun s energy c aptured on sunny

days to be relea sed during c loudy period s or a t night time. This me thod of using storing

Interview (Transc ribed)Below is the transc ription of an interview with Dr. Go swa mi d isc ussing his resea rc h a nd

op inions c onc erning the e nvironm enta l awa rene ss of

    USF.

BARRY RITTER: Hello, Dr. Goswami . My na me is Barry Ritter and Im the Web Ma ster for

the Entrep reneur Club a t USF St. Petersburg. The stud ents in our c lub a re going to be

ma king their ow n job s and their own businesses and sinc e there is so m uc h p ote ntial

mo ney in future g ree n industries, I wa s looking for peo p le a t USF to inte rview and you

we re on the top o f the list when I did a Goog le sea rc h. To b e honest with you, I neve r

thought youd take my interview .

DR.GOSWAMI: For students I c an t say no, for them I alwa ys have time . I c an say no to a

lot of peo p le but no t for stud ents, they a re our future.

BARRY RITTER: We wa nted to see if you ha d any o p inions on the c olleg e itself and if they

were d oing enough to ma ke them selves greener. We feel that if a c olleg e is ab le to

ma ke them selves greene r, then the students wo uld ha ve som ething to learn from and

grow their ow n b usiness ideas in the future. My first q uestion is, how environme nta lly

c onsc ious do you fe el USF is as an institut ion?

DR.GOSWAMI: The USF president ha s ac tua lly dec lared tha t the USF c amp us will be-

c om e a n environm enta lly susta inab le camp us and tha t s significant for any university to

say. There are a lot of efforts but we a re now here c lose as we ne ed to be The fac t that

the a dministra tion feels tha t it is important a nd has ma de ongoing e fforts to reac h this

goa l is significa nt to me .

To listen to aud io o f this inter-

    view c lick here.

its ava ilab le so you ha ve e nergy to use

whe n its not a va ilab le. Sinc e storag e is

very imp ortant, this is why w e are deve l-

op ing these c ap sules tha t store a lot o f

energy. So, onc e we develop our solar

power plant a nd these storage c ap sules,

    we shou ld b e a b le to use the m. Tha t s just

one innova tion b ut there are so many others tha t stud ents are working o n that we

should b e a ble to use a nd experiment on them in this power plant.

BARRY RITTER: Are you awa re of the solar pa rking mete rs on c amp us? Are there any

othe r kinds of inventions tha t you think we c ould use o n c amp us to he lp this gree n

    cause?

DR.GOSWAMI: This is a very imp ortant top ic . As we mo ve into elec tric transportation

with elec tric cars and p lugin hybrid c ars, we w ill nee d to ha ve loc ations in the pa rking

ga rag es where these ca rs would b e able to pa rk and p lugin and c harge . You would of

c ourse b e a ble to do this with co nventiona l elec tric ity but if you c ould a c c omp lish this

with solar panels, that wo uld b e e ven bette r. In tha t a rea , I think that USF wa s the

globa l lea der and wa s the first c olleg e c am pus in the world to ha ve solar cha rging sta-

tions built in the ea rly 1990s. They were a hea d of the ir time a nd demonstra ted how you

c ould do tha t. Now eve ryone else is c oming a round to the idea that you should be us-

ing electric transporta tion and you should b e ab le to c hang e these ve hic les with sun-

light. So I welc om e USF and the ir ideas of b uild ing solar c ha rging sta tions and putting

them a round c amp us in p a rking lots.

BARRY RITTER: Tell me about the Zero-Energy house you a re g oing to build on c amp us.

DR.GOSWAMI: This is anothe r conc ep t tha t is go ing to bec om e ve ry imp ortant. This is

the c onc ep t of net zero energy buildings. What that m ea ns is that over a period of one

year, the a mount of energy tha t you b uy from the utility co mp any w ill equa l the

amount that you p ut ba c k into the g rid b ec ause you ha ve your own solar elec tric ity

generating panels. Firstly tha t invo lves using the m ost efficient app lianc es in the b uild -

ing a s is possible. The goa l is to use the lea st energy possible w ithout m aking the inhab-

    itants unc omfortab le.

BARRY RITTER: What spec ific ally c an you do to acc omplish this?

DR.GOSWAMI: Som e o f the things are no rma l things. We c an sta rt a t lights and go to

hot w a ter hea ters to refrige rato rs to he at pump s to ho t wa ter heate rs and a ir c ond i-

tioners. There are a lso a lot of app lianc es tha t are coming on the market that we

wo uld a lso d em onstrate in this house. Number one th is wo uld be so you c ould use a s

little energy a s possible a nd numb er two, use a solar gene rato r that c ould p rod uce as

muc h ene rgy a s these appliances use over a year.

BARRY RITTER: I wa s wondering ab out return on investment. So in o ther wo rds say you b uy

this zero ene rgy house. I wa s wo nd ering if you have p rojec tions on ho w long it would

take you to p ay for the who le thing.

DR.GOSWAMI: We have to find out. Certa inly the first house w e b uild will be ve ry expen-

ter, then you can start loo king into the c ost effec tivene ss. We will have the house on

c amp us and p eople will be a ble to c ome a nd visit and see w ha ts in it.

BARRY RITTER: When w ill it b e d one?

DR.GOSWAMI: The c om pet ition tha t this house is ente ring in is in Sep temb er and tha t is

in Washington DC. After that c omp letion the ho use w ill be d isassemb led and trans-

ported b ac k to c amp us. We are on a ve ry tight sc hed ule a nd it will be built right

here. Bec ause o f contrac tual things be twee n USF and the c omp any that is go ing to

build the ho use, the c onstruc tion ha s been de layed , but once those things a re ta ken

c are of the c onstruction w ill beg in.

BARRY RITTER: Ok my last q uestion to you is, is there a nything tha t I forgot to ask you tha t

you think is impo rtant to me ntion to young entrep rene uria l students?

DR.GOSWAMI: I think that the b iggest entrepreneuria l and business op portunities of the
