which has been electrified
since 2014. The interaction
covered the beneficiaries of

Har Ghar Yojana -
'Saubhagya' scheme,
through video bridge. This
is the tenth interaction in
the series by the Prime
Minister through video

Schemes through video bridge
Prime Minister said "People
who have not seen
darkness, don't understand
the meaning of illumination.
Those who have not spent
their lives in the darkness
don't realise the value of
light".
The Prime Minister, during
the interaction said that
thousands of villages have
been electrified since NDA
government has taken over.
He added that unlike the
false promises given by the
previous government, the
present government has
walked the talk of
electrifying every village.
The Government not only
focused on electrification,
but also reformed the
distribution systems across
the country, Prime Minister
added.
These 18000 villages which
were not electrified even
after 70 years of
independence were
electrified in the last four
years. The last one
electrified was Leisang
village of Manipur in the
North east Sector on April
28, 2018. Shri Narendra
Public Accounts Committee of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly headed
by Shri Charles Pyngrope, MLA & Chairman, PAC alongwith other
members of the Assembly called on the Lt Governor Admiral
D K Joshi PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.) at Raj Niwas on
19.07.2018. Various developmental processes underway, management
of urban habitats, water conservation, culture, etc. of the two territories
of Meghalaya and A&N Islands were discussed.
Modi said that it was
difficult to electrify the last
18000 villages, as most were
in remote areas, hilly areas
and areas with poor
connectivity. He added that
despite all the difficulties, a
dedicated team of people
worked hard to ensure that
the dream of electrifying
every village is achieved.
The Prime Minister pointed
out that the government

The Port Blair
Municipal Council is
committed towards
transforming Port Blair into
a Plastic free city in a
phased manner. In a first
of its kind, the PBMC has
recently introduced bio-
degradable bags which are
made up of starch. Bio-
degradable bags having
been made of natural
ingredients get
decomposed in a week's
time without posing a
threat to the environment
or its users. These bio-
degradable bags have
been tested for i ts
adaptability in the local
PBMC’s efforts in transforming Port Blair into plastic free city
market and the same have
been accepted by the
publ ic as a per fect
substitute to plastic and
non-woven cloth bags.
Introduction of the bio-
degradable bags into local
markets wi tnessed
repeated round of
deliberations with various
market associat ions,
Andaman Chamber of
Commerce & Industry and
Andaman & Nicobar
Pollution Control
Committee under the
Department of Science &
Technology which led to
one of the entrepreneurs
shouldering the
responsibility to procure
such bio-degradable bags
for distribution in the local
market on usual cost.
With the objective to put
an end to the use of plastic
and non-woven cloth bags
in Port Blair city, the PBMC
has urged various market
associations to discourage
the use of such plastic /
non-woven cloth bags.
They are also requested to
refrain from providing any
bags in the long run and
instead encourage the
customers to come with
their own bio-degradable
bags. Meanwhile, the
Andaman Chamber of
Commerce & Industry has
volunteered to conduct
series of awareness
programmes in educating
the masses about the ill
effects of the use of plastic
as well as availability of
substitute bio-degradable
bags.
The PBMC & ANPCC shall
undertake intensive drive
against the import of plastic
/non-woven cloth bags in
order to usher into a
community devoid of
plastic/ non-woven cloth
bags on the eve of
Independence Day, 2018. All
concerned have requested
to co-operate in this noble
venture, a communication
from Secretary PBMC said.
