Microsoft Word: 2003 to 2007

Big changes occurred in Office 12 (2007):

– Different file extension (docx vs. doc)– Different user interface (the ribbon)– Different locations for your favorite

functions (somewhere in the ribbon)– Additional functionality (such as

Quick Parts)

Microsoft Word: 2003 to 2007(continued) But why, Uncle Bill?

– Thorough user research pointed to these design changes

– Word 2007 helps novice and new users build better documents more quickly

– Aligns with the rest of Office 2007 better than previous versions of Word/Office

– The old UI was, well, old…

MS Word for Windows circa 1990

Using Word 2007: Styles

Key points on styles in 2007:– The Styles window is helpful (reminds me

of the Paragraph Catalog in Frame…)– Right-click on a style to modify it– Consider using a template (.dotx file) to

work with your content in Word– Style sets can be helpful– Styles are very powerful and getting

increasingly complicated with each new Word release

Page 8: TC 424: The Computer in TC (Winter 2008) Week 9 : Microsoft Word 2007: Tips and Tricks to Tame the Paper Tiger.

Using Word 2007: Table/Figure Captions

Key points on captions in 2007:– The Word 2007 style set includes only the Caption

style– You’re going to need a Figure Caption and a Table

Caption• Why?• Because you want to control the spacing before and after each

of these styles, that’s why!

– Use the Caption style as your starting point for each new style:

• From the Styles window, click Options… and select All Styles from the Select styles to show: drop-down list

• From the Styles window, select the Caption style, and then select New Style

• Create your new style using the appropriate spacing before and after

Using Word 2007:Cross-References

Key points on cross-references in 2007:

– Very similar to previous Word versions…

• Select the heading text or other type of text you want to reference

Using Word 2007:Table of Contents Creation

Key points on TOC creation in 2007:

– It’s pretty easy to create one…– It’s a little harder (at first) to specify

which styles to include if you are used to Word 2003:

• From the References menu, select Table of Contents, and then select Insert Table of Contents…

• Select Options… if you want to specify which styles to include in the TOC

Using Word 2007:Page/Section Breaks

Key points on breaks in 2007:– It’s pretty easy to create breaks…– Again, it’s a little harder (at first) to

insert certain types of breaks if you are used to Word 2003:

• Page breaks are located in the Insert menu• But don’t use that feature• Instead, go to the Page Layout menu and

select Breaks• You can insert page and section breaks

here!

Using Word 2007:Headers/Footers

Key points on headers/footers in 2007:

– They are located in their own area of the Insert menu now

– If you select Edit Header or Edit Footer from this menu, you’ll get the Header & Footer Tools -> Design set of options

Page 13: TC 424: The Computer in TC (Winter 2008) Week 9 : Microsoft Word 2007: Tips and Tricks to Tame the Paper Tiger.

Using Word 2007:Page Numbering

Key points on page numbering in 2007:

– Page numbers are included in the Insert menu also, right next to the Header and Footer options

– Page number formatting stays the same as in Word 2003

– The Review menu has a bunch of stuff in it, including the Tracking and Changes sets of options

– You have options here with regard to reviewing changes made to your document…let’s walk through them now

Page 15: TC 424: The Computer in TC (Winter 2008) Week 9 : Microsoft Word 2007: Tips and Tricks to Tame the Paper Tiger.

Using Word 2007:Document Combining

Key points on document combining in 2007:

– Document compare and combine tools are also included in the Review menu:

• Document comparisons are very helpful when you need to see where any changes occurred from one version of a document to the next

• Document combining is helpful when you want to consolidate two similar documents into one document

• Let’s walk through these options now

Uninspired: This week’s demotivational quote For $20, Sobolsoft

(www.sobolsoft.com) will sell you a “Old Classic Menu Toolbar Interface” that changes Word 2007 back into Word 2003.

On the other hand, the original Word for Windows (released about 20 years ago) cost $500.

Word 2007 costs $115 for students, or you can get Office 2007 for $64.

Perhaps progress is a good thing! “Clippy,” the helpful Office companion
