We are excited to watch the incredible growth and momentum of our sport throughout British Columbia and across the country. The excitement surrounding Canada’s best young players has interested even the most casual fans of the sport. Municipalities across the province are adding indoor tennis courts for their residents which will further the growth even more.

We are incredibly thankful for the amazing volunteers, organizers and officials who host so many top-level events throughout our province. These events attract both professional and amateur players to the province, and provide our players and fans exposure to some of the best players in the world. In particular, we thank the Lee family for bringing back the Vancouver Open to our province and congratulate them on winning the award for the best challenger event in the world.

We have several partners who assist us in delivering our mandate across the province. We would like to thank viaSport, the Province of British Columbia and their gaming grants, the City of Vancouver and their hosting grants, our municipal governments and of course our closest partner, Tennis Canada.

Last year, we proudly announced the launch of our Community Youth Fund, and this year, we are excited to announce the launch of the Ed Siemens High Performance Fund. The fund has already provided four bursaries to our up and coming juniors who best represent the ideals for which Ed Siemens is remembered. We encourage our members to please contact us to learn more about these important funds and how they could become a part of your charitable donation tax plan.

This is the final year of our 2015-2018 Tennis BC strategic plan. We are very pleased to have achieved many of our objectives. The most significant achievement has been the announcement of the Western Canada National Training Centre. This objective has been a key component of the strategic plan for many years. We thank all past and present board members for the hard work they have all contributed to achieving this milestone.

“We are incredibly thankful for the amazing volunteers, organizers and officials who host so many top-levels events throughout our province.”

Another key objective in our strategic plan has been to update our governance model and bylaws. After three years of consultations and preparation we are now confident that the new documentation is both relevant and forward looking to support our society’s future. We want to thank Mark Braidwood and John McMurchy for their great work in achieving both of these key strategic objectives.

Looking forward, in addition to developing our new strategic plans, the board and management will be focusing on three main priorities:

• Continued focus on the development of a new indoor facility • Further development of our entry level programs, with a goal to work

with municipalities on public court programming • Develop more high-performance programs and pathways for our

junior players

Finally, we would like to thank our retiring board members, Yevgeniy Meshcherekov and Patrick Caffrey for their great work and commitment to serving our members.

Sincerely,

Rick Hastings, President Mark Roberts, CEO

Tennis Development As the official governing body of tennis in British Columbia, Tennis BC’s main goal is to inspire and enable the growth of tennis among all ages and levels throughout the province.

One way Tennis BC achieved this goal in 2017-2018 is through partnering with organizations in the community to host events such as:

▸ Olympic Day

▸ Canada Day

▸ Odlum Brown Vancouver Open Community Open

▸ Leith Wheeler Stanley Park Open Community Day with CAN

▸ Canucks Autism Network Multi-Sport Summer Camps

Tennis For Schools Program

Over 10,000 children across the province participated in a combination of in-school programs, “first-hit” try-it days, after-school programs, kids team tennis, and camps implemented by community champions, coaches and volunteers.

Kids Team Tennis

Tennis BC successfully grew the Kids Team Tennis Initiative in 2017-2018. Team Tennis events were available from the grassroots level to the competitive level. Team Tennis training programs were also available in communities such as Coquitlam, Salt Spring Island, Comox Valley, Victoria, and Fernie. This program will continue to be an area of focus and growth for the 2018-2019 year.

Girls in Action

In partnership with the Surrey School District, Tennis BC organized a multi-week tennis program led by female coaches and mentors who provide “at-risk” youth the opportunity to try tennis, yoga and other racquet sports in an encouraging, positive and fun environment. Through the program, young girls have the opportunity to build positive social and emotional resilience, self-confidence, self-esteem, leadership skills, and community engagement.

CAN

Tennis BC partnered with the Canucks Autism Network to bring together coaches and children with autism in a “try-it” day to provide children and their families the opportunity to try tennis in a fun and safe environment. A family day event with CAN was held during the 2018 Leith Wheeler Stanley Park Open as well. Tennis BC further partnered with CAN to host multi-sport tennis camps in Vancouver, Surrey and Coquitlam.

SOAR Program

In partnership with Curl BC and BC Golf, the SOAR program (Sharing Our Activities and Resources) aims to bring introductory programming for each of the three sports at the Active Start/FUNdamental levels to Indigenous communities. In 2017, SOAR was held in Bamfield with twenty participants. Two facilitators were trained in the community, which now offers subsequent programming using curling, golf and tennis equipment.

Community & Kids Tennis Tennis BC community programs and partnership highlights from 2017-2018.

The idea behind the Building Community Champions (BTC) Strategy is to bring more people into the game of tennis and to keep them playing for life — facilitating growth and sustainability. The approach is based on the philosophy that tennis has a role to play in community development and this, if seen by community leaders as a valuable asset to the community, will be supported accordingly.

Congratulations to the Community Champions in BC: Sy Silverberg (Victoria), Brenda Dean (Comox Valley), Marietjie Du Plessis (Salmon Arm), Charlotte Willis (Fernie), Marianne Banman (Salt Spring Island), Kiyo Breiting (Coquitlam), Matt Martin (Nelson), Jim Kocsis (Penticton), and Stacey Lewis (Tennis Yukon).

Community Champions

Rogers Rookie Tour U8 - U18The Rogers Rookie Tour is a national program designed to bridge the gap between entry-level tennis and the provincial competitive junior circuit. The matches are played with slower red, orange, and green balls on smaller courts, offering play opportunities for players U8 to U18. The 2017-2018 season saw an increase in both the number of participants and events on the Rogers Rookie Tour: 812 players in 45 events.

Page 13: TBC Annual Report 2018 FINAL€¦ · Tennis events were available from the grassroots level to the competitive level. Team Tennis training programs were also available in communities

13

Through a healthy and positive competitive environment, the goal of the Future Stars Tour is to create competitive opportunities for more advanced U9 and U10 players who have gone through at least three to five U8 and U10 Rogers Rookie Tour events. The 2017-2018 saw an increase in both players and events: 1,480 participants played in 68 Future Stars tournaments. The Tour also welcomed two new host clubs this past year: Salt Spring Island Tennis Club and Vancouver International Tennis Academy.

Future Stars Tour U9 & U10

From the Future Stars Tour, young players progress to the 2 Star Tour. This series of events is designed for players wishing to continue down the competitive track. These events transition young athletes from playing with a green dot ball to a regular yellow ball. The Competition 3 Star Tour is the next step along the pathway, and is geared towards young athletes in the Top 30 in BC. The Competition 3.5 Star Tour is for players looking to transition into Provincial and National Selection level events. In the 2017-2018 season, across the three tours 86 events were held with 1,953 participants.

Leith Wheeler Stanley Park Open The 2018 Leith Wheeler Stanley Park Open successfully took place for the 87th time this past year. We thank our t i t l e s p o n s o r, L e i t h W h e e l e r Investment Counsel, for their support for a third year in a row.

This year the iconic Fish House restaurant was under renovation, which posed a unique situation for the event. Despite the resulting challenges, the event boasted a record number of entries this year. More short events were added, such as the Parent & Child event, creating more opportunities for players and increasing players’ ability to commit to more competitions during the 17-day long event. The Men’s Open featured a former professional and hometown hero, Philip Bester, who went on to win the event.

We thank our event sponsors and look forward to the newly renovated brew pub opening next year at the Park. Last but not least, thank you to our volunteer coordinator Aditya Madhavan and our invaluable volunteer team.

Open Summer Series The 2018 Summer Open Series had a total of 1,299 participants. Thank you to all the host clubs and tournament organizers for putting on a great 2018 Summer Series:
