The engineers at WALDRICH COBURG also took the need for different controls into account dur-ing the development of the TAURUS.

As the preferences of customers differ greatly, it was clear that the „big three“ control suppliers had to be offered as a choice. The engineers de-veloped a drive concept, which can be used irre-

spective of the control version. This was a bril-liant solution to a mammoth task.

For the TAURUS, WALDRICH COBURG there-fore builds the basic machines without knowing which control system will be used. This saves costs and shortens the lead time, which will be between 6 and 8 months, depending on the rel-

evant equipment and automation. The following manufacturers are available for selection: In ad-dition to the Siemens 840 D sl, the new TNC 640 from Heidenhain can also be chosen for work-shop-orientated programming. The Fanuc 30i, which is particularly popular and sets industrial standards in Asia and the USA, can also be used on the TAURUS.

WALDRICH COBURG presented the best milling price-performance machine tool of all time at the AMB in Stuttgart. This marks the start of a new innovation campaign for the large machine tool manufacturer. Demand for small and medium-sized machines is increasing and WALDRICH COBURG is reacting to the expectations of the market at the right time.

Hubert Becker, Chairman of the Board: „Like other system manufacturers, we have our core busi-ness. With this new development in series ma-chines, we aim to make ourselves even more fu-ture-orientated. We see a lucrative market, which we are sure to win over with our new product.“ With its unique approach, the WOIS Institute has provided WALDRICH COBURG with valuable sup-port during the new development and created in-dividual values and synergies with the world mar-

ket leader, for a sustainable and strong future. The growth potential was worked out in coop-eration with the WOIS Institute. Hubert Becker is confident: „The development of the new se-ries machine has opened up enormous innova-tion potential.“

The new development TAURUS, with hydro-static guideways in all axes, was presented by WALDRICH COBURG at the AMB in Stuttgart. Klaus Bauer, Head of Design: „What may be a “small ma-chine” for WALDRICH COBURG is the limit for other manufacturers.“ Matthias Dill, Director of Produc-tion and Service, adds: „With the small WALDRICH COBURG machine, we are offering high-perform-ance technology with an efficient cost framework in all processes. A strict quality management proc-ess will be implemented in production, assembly and service.“

The success of TAURUS relies on the opti-misation of the operational processes, followed by a quick and low-cost production through-put with short installation and commissioning times. Matthias Fleischer, Director of New Ma-chine Sales: „As part of our cost management, we will be building machines in small batches. By shortening the throughput times, we can pro-duce up to 20 TAURUS ’ per year.“

Hubert Becker has an initial prognosis: „Our goal is to initially produce 10 machines per year, consistent with the competitor figures availa-ble, and we believe this market potential is ex-tremely realistic.“ The responsible colleagues at WALDRICH COBURG are certain that the new production processes with the relevant test and evaluation fields will guarantee a high output for the TAURUS milling machine.

WALDRICH COBURG offers a high level of cus-tomer orientation, with the TAURUS three different types of control system are available. The controls from Siemens, Heidenhain and Fa-nuc are well established in the global market and can be selected according to the custom-er’s requirement. Peter Schneyer, Head of Ap-plication Technology, is sure that this customer orientation will pay off. WALDRICH COBURG therefore offers customers the control they want to use on an individual basis. The Fanuc control is widely used in the USA and Asia, while medium-sized companies in Germany pre-fer the control from Heidenhain. The Siemens control is used for the automation of linked ma-chines.

TAURUS is characterized by energy effi-ciency, usability and ease of maintenance, as well as the unbeatable milling price-perform-ance value resulting from optimized processes

and design-to-cost strategies. „We will show that it is possible to make machines of the high-est quality at extremely competitive prices in Germany.“ Managing Director Hubert Becker: „The design is complete and we are currently in the procurement phase.

The TAURUS will be available in two sizes with the working areas 2.5x2x5 m and 3x3x6 m.“ WALDRICH COBURG has revealed some data in advance. „Our goal is to install the new machine at the customer site in just a few weeks instead of several months.“

According to Matthias Fleischer, Director of Sales, the model is a single-table machine, where all structural components are made from high-quality castings. The special feature: All guides of the main axes are in hydrostatic design. This wear-free guide type guarantees low mainte-nance and repair costs, as well as a high avail-ability and prolonged tool life. Other design ver-sions include pallet changers or motor spindle units. The first machine has already been sold.

COBURG is relying completely on hydrostatic guides. The company from Coburg is the only manufacturer in the world to offer customers a series machine with hydrostatics in all ma-chine axes in this price segment.

With this development, WALDRICH COBURG is underlining its leading position in the use of hydrostatic guides in machine tools. Hydro-statics offers freedom from wear, low mainte-nance requirements and significantly more ac-curate results compared with machines with other guide systems.

The hydrostatic principle is based on the princi-ple of fluid friction. The fluid film is pressed be-tween the bearing points of the machine axes. This lifts the components off each other and enables easy movement.

The picture to the right shows a stone ball with a weight of 11 tons and a diameter of 2 metres. If the ball lies dry in its bearing shell, it cannot turn. When fluid is running over it, however, the ball can be moved extremely easily. The mechanism which can be demonstrated easily on this model works on the same principle in our new machine generation. An oil film ena-bles the components to slide easily over each

other. Easy sliding guarantees smooth move-ment, even with the slowest feed speeds, and the permanent supply of oil on the bearing point also enables maximum accelerations. Optimal damping properties are achieved with the oil film between the components of the bearing point.

The series machine TAURUS will be the centre of the exhibition area at AMB. Two ex-hibits will be used to show how the hydrostat-ics and linear guides work.
