Popular indie artists of today
1960’s
The history of Indie Music dates long back in 1960′s. There immerged some bands like "Velvet Underground” However bands like these sold very few records.
In the early 2000s, a new group of
bands that played a stripped down
and back-to-basics version of guitar
rock, emerged into the mainstream.
2000’s
Indie music took a stiff growth in 1980s. In this period a new form of music immerged known as "alternative music", which was a group formed out of distortion of garage bands.
The 1990’s brought changes to the alternative rock scene. Grunge bands such as Nirvana, Alice in Chains also punk revival bands like Green Day and The Offspring also became popular and were grouped under the "alternative" umbrella.
In the mid-1980’s, the term "indie" began to be used to describe the music produced on post-punk labels rather than the labels themselves. The indie rock scene in the US was prefigured by the college rock that dominated college radio playlists which included key bands like R.E.M from the US and The Smiths
from the UK.
