History

• 1980sIn its earliest of years, mainstream R&B was highly pop-orientated. Known 1980s R&B musicians include Luther Vandros, Mtume, The SOS Band, Freddie Jackson, Loose Ends, DeBarge and Stephanie Mills

• 1990sDuring the mid 1990s, contemporary R&B was brought to the mainstream by R Kelly, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Aaliyah, TLC, SWV and Boys II Men.

• 2000s – PresentThe cross-pollination between R&B and Hip-Hop had increased by the 2000s. As the 2000s progressed, R&B began to focus more on solo artists rather than groups. The most commercially successful R&B acts of the decade were: Beyoncé Knowles, Usher, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey and Rihanna (according to Billboard Magazine). A lot of modern recording artists have combined traditional R&B with elements of contemporary pop, dance-pop, pop rock and electro-pop; this is done to create a lighter and more youthful sound.
