• In these cases they may use both percentage and tonnage, for example 10 – 50te, 50te – 100te, 100te and above or up to and inclusive of 50% above 50% or above 75% crane capacity

APPOINTED PERSON COURSECATEGORY OF LIFTS – COMPLEX LIFT

• If the lifting operations requires more than one crane is to be used to lift a single, then in addition those duties already listed, the Appointed Person should ensure:

• The weight must be known exactly

• The proportion of weight taken by each crane throughout the lifting operation

• Cranes selected are compatible in lifting characteristics and there is a sufficient margin within the rated capacity of each crane, to take care of any additional dynamic loading (shock loading) that may be transferred during the lifting procedure

• There must be no contact between the crane jibs when planning the operation and actually lifting the load

• A written method statement is drawn up outlining the steps to be followed to ensure compliance with the safe system of work

• The method statement is given, understood and followed by those involved. This is in addition to the briefing (tool box talks)

• When all the factors cannot be accurately evaluated the cranes should be down rated by 25% or more. In some publication it will indicate that each crane must be able to lift 75% of the load.

• Where the lifting operation requires more than two cranes or cranes

using load enhancement attachments (superlift), or the lift is to take

place at a location with exceptional hazards e.g.. chemical plant, oil

refinery, nuclear installations. Then the Appointed Person in addition

to the duties already listed should ensure:

• The planning is given greater attention than that for more straight

forward lifting operations

• The assessment of the loading on each crane throughout the full

operation is known within + or - 2%

• The suitability of the ground supporting the cranes and the load(s) is thoroughly investigated and that the investigation takes into account of the effect of the cranes standing in close proximity to each other

• During the load lifting phase of the operation, it is monitored and that this information is displayed suitably and clearly to the supervisor directing the crane operators

• NOTE: it may be appropriate to monitor the inclination of the load during the lifting cycle

classed as a complex lift

• A general rule is that the lifting gear used is

at least twice the strength of that required

for general lift.

• Crane are operated gently and should not

move in excess of 0.5m/s

• Maximum wind speed 7m/s

APPOINTED PERSON COURSEDEMOLITION OPERATIONS

• The safe system of work should include steps to ensure all loads are free from adhesion, steel wedges, jacking equipment may be needed to break the suction.

• There will be a final inspection of the load by the Crane Supervisor before the lift commences.

• Lifting loads in mid-air should be avoided if possible. It is necessary to handle a load by attaching the crane then cutting free, the Appointed Person should ensure that a 100% uplift has been added to the estimated weight when selecting the craneage.
