CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS: Little Eden Home for the Physically and

Mentally Handicapped in Edenvale recently celebrated the birth of King Jesus with a beautiful Christmas concert . Residents

of the home were all given the chance to participate in the festive occasion.

As we enter the second week of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, local organizations are stepping up their efforts to support children in the community. One of these is Chubby Chums in Primrose. Chubby Chums is a non-profit organization established in 1999 to address the needs of children left destitute by poverty, disease and abuse. Speaking on the 16 Days of Activism drive, Chubby Chums Deputy Director and care worker Felicia Gaza said everybody in the community needed to get involved in child protection. “There is a saying, ‘Your child is my child and my child is your child’,” she said. She has advised the community to report any kind of child abuse to Child Protection Organizations (CPOs).She said Chubby Chums currently supervises 31 children’s homes, and that, working with these homes, she had heard many terrible stories of abuse. “I have met children who have endured cigarette burns and broken limbs at the hands of parents. Others have had bruises and bumps from being used as human punch bags and footballs.”She said Chubby Chum’s founder

Marti Barnard had a special heart for children. “He gave up his career to start this operation, and throws his heart and soul into it, sometimes working round the clock as he is on standby for the police and child protection units. He is often called by court in the middle of the night to fetch a child removed from their abusive parents.”She said there was nothing that Martin would not do for a child – “Many years ago, he delivered a baby in a supermarket.”Gaza is adamant children are innocent and need to be protected. “What we are trying to do is encourage in the community 365 days of child protection – not just Child Protection Week or 16 Days of Activism,” she said. She has encouraged the community to get involved

in Chubby Chums through voluntary work, sponsorship and donations. Chubby Chums also currently needs volunteer telemarketers. “The best

thing you can give a child isn’t presents or sweets but lots of hugs,” said Gaza, explaining the highlight of her work had been having little arms wrapped around her from every direction. To assist them, call 011 825 7773.

Who better than the parent of a toddler to understand that when a child says “no,” he means “NO?” Experienced parents (those who have successfully contended with more than one toddler), will tell you that a toddler’s “NO”s are to be taken quite seriously – if you know what’s good for you. They will tell you that this precious time of a child’s life is when he is learning to set healthy boundaries and is discovering he is a distinct and separate person who can function freely and independently in the outside world. The first time my son said “no” was long before the Terrible Twos, before he graduated from soft porridge to finer cuisine (like Chicken a la King). He managed to say an eloquent “no,” despite a mouthful of pumpkin, which he spewed out between his teeth and subsequently refused with pursed lips. I was reminded of an expression I heard that a toddler was like a little blender, but without the lid. He recently took a liking to a pair of red gumboots. In the evenings, he insists on wearing them to bed. When I try to take them off, he says a firm “no.” I know he will outgrow this phase… as a wise parent (the same one who has successfully contended with more than one toddler, as above) once told me, “Kids are either entering a phase or leaving a phase.” Still, despite honouring many of his “NO”s, I have learned sometimes it is necessary to act despite his protests, when it is in his best interests. The 16 Days of Activism for women and children is a reminder that children need to be honoured and protected. We need to listen to their “no”s because each child is unique and deserves to be heard, but we also need to look after their rights and be their voice, when they are incapable of speaking up for themselves. In this edition, the community’s children shine. There are the children of the Little Eden Home for the Mentally and Physically Handicapped in Edenvale who recently held their Christmas concert for the community (page 2). On the back page, are two brothers from Leeuwenhof Akademie who despite their young age, took on the grand challenge of summitting Kilimanjaro, encouraging other children in the community to follow their dreams. This edition also features some more unconventional children – Tamika and Navia, the “children” of Arno and Adele Van Eeden, recently married in Bedfordview (see front page).Children may be small, but they know what they like and don’t like and “no” is “no.” They should be heard 365 days a year.

An Edenvale family’s plans of a vacation spent deep-sea fishing in the tranquil waters of Mozambique have been disrupted after their family boat worth around R350 000 was stolen from their property in The Avenues on Tuesday last week (25 November).Edenvale Police Station’s crime prevention officer Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts said two men in a white Golf had been seen towing the Tomcat boat away from the Edenvale property. The same boat was later spotted in Linbro Park and police are now investigating its whereabouts.A family spokesperson said his neighbour had noticed suspicious activity on his property at around 16:00 and managed to obtain photographs of the assailants’ white Golf, before they fled with the boat. “I was at work when my wife called to notify me about the incident. At first I felt helpless in the traffic, but later I felt violated. My privacy, my

garden and my home were invaded.”He said the family took the boat to Mozambique each December to go deep-sea fishing. “I don’t know what we are going to do this year.” The family remains hopeful their boat will be returned to them and Edenvale police have asked anyone from the public with information on the boat’s whereabouts, or on the Golf in the photograph, to contact the police station with information.“I am sick to my stomach. Insurance can never compensate you for the customisation of the little things, or the fun you could have had but have had to forfeit,” said the boat owner.Lieutenant Colonel Roberts said this was not the first incident of boat theft in the area. “Criminals target all kinds of things. There have been incidents of jetskis being stolen. Recently a trailer was stolen from De Bakery.”What the criminals plan to do with the boat is difficult to say, he said. “They might sell it for scrap metal, or more than likely, take it over to Mozambique and sell it there.”

Bedfordview police have warned motorists to be vigilant while driving on highways. This follows numerous highway robbery incidents, where criminals posing as police officials have directed motorists to the side of the road in order to rob them of their valuables.Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, Bedfordview spokesman, said it was imperative to check for the correct police certificate and badge before accepting an official as legitimate. He s a i d motorists unsure of a policeman’s credentials should put on hazard lights and drive to a nearby police station or frequented area. “If the officer is legitimate, he won’t mind you taking these precautionary measures,” he said.

The Bedfordview police will be stepping up awareness and visibility campaigns over the festive season. Strategic policing operations will also be conducted, among them increased monitoring of shopping centres and of highway on- and off-ramps.

Soon it will be election season again and ruling party politicians will again be bombarding the electorate with promises of job creation and poverty alleviation. The chief opposition will again explain how they can deliver job creation and poverty alleviation better than the ruling party, while our MPs in red will promote nationalisation and minimum wages. Voters since 1994 have been promised the moon and the stars; but, again, in 2014 Eskom is delivering darkness. It will not be long before load shedding will lead to job shedding as supermarkets are forced to dump rotten produce, restaurants and hairdressers close their doors and factories have to halt their production lines. Sadly, small businesses – which are the greatest job-creators – will be affected the most. The fact of the matter is that, while governments are unable to create jobs, they are often extremely good at destroying them. There is a huge difference between an entrepreneurial mindset and a bureaucratic one. The former is dynamic, innovative and

free-spirited; while the latter is methodical, stuck-in-a-rut and rule-bound. The former pushes the envelope; the latter pushes pens. The former works for as long as it takes; the latter works 9-to-5 with compulsory tea-breaks and lunch-breaks. The job of government is not to create jobs but to create a job-friendly infrastructure. This means doing boring things like keeping the lights on, delivering the mail, putting criminals behind bars, educating children to an acceptable level and maintaining the roads. In short, government needs to make business as easy and cheap as possible to do. This will attract more investment and entrepreneurs to our country and jobs will start creating themselves.Of course, this will involve some short-term sacrifices for the sake of some long-term gains. Sanral, for example, should switch off its gantries. Keeping those massive steel structures working 24/7 must take a huge amount of power, especially when all their bright purple 70s-disco-style lights are on.

Leeuwenhof Akademie learners Michael and Brandon Cole (17 and 16) are on top of the world after summitting Kilimanjaro. The Sunward Park brothers come from an adventure-loving family but the idea to climb Kilimanjaro came from Brandon, who after reading Mike Hamill’s book Climbing the Seven Summits, decided he wanted to climb Kilimanjaro for his 16th birthday. Brandon told the tame TIMES: “My brother agreed to take on the challenge with me. We decided we would do it for a good cause. My mom’s uncle died of multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2010 and we were very close to him, so we wanted to help create awareness of the condition.” Michael said the brothers had done rigorous research before undertaking the challenge. “We are both very involved in school sport but built up fi tness through walking every day,” he said. They left for their adventure with “basic survival tools” in their bags. “We needed water purifi cation tablets, energy supplements, thermal clothes and general hiking clothes. The most important thing we took with us was a good pair of hiking boots each.”Despite months of preparation and research into the giant mountain that fi rst won Brandon’s heart in a book, the brothers said nothing could have prepared them for the exhilaration of reaching the top of the mountain. “The greatest experience of my life was summit night, when I fi rst realized the magnitude of what we had achieved,” said Michael. “Teenagers and children should not think their age means they cannot achieve great things. I know of a 10-year-old who has completed the climb, though when you are younger than 16, the Kilimanjaro authorities pay special attention to you.” Brandon said a good night’s rest and a long shower helped the boys recover from their strenuous quest. He referred to his original inspiration to climb Kilimanjaro – the book, Climbing the Seven Summits. “My dream is now to summit the remaining six mountains,” he said.
