The club is believed to have been formed in 1892 as John Smith’s FC. It wasn’t until 1923 that the Tadcaster Albion name was adopted. In the early years the club played in the local York League. In 1948 Albion won the York League. They continued competing in the York League during the 1950’s & 60’s.

Tadcaster Albion, in the early days, played home games on the site of the cricket ground on Station Road, before moving to the Ings ground, near to where the present Samuel Smith Brewery Packaging Block now stands. Changing facilities were in the town, at the rear of the Falcon Public House on Chapel Street, and it was a common Saturday afternoon sight to see nets, corner flags, buckets, oranges, players and officials trekking through the town.

Down the years the club has played in several leagues. In early times, Bark-ston Ash and later still the Yorkshire and Northern Counties East Leagues.

Football continued on the Ings ground until 1960, when the club moved 100 yards up river to its present home at the Park.

In 1973 the club joined the Yorkshire League Division 3 and were promoted in 1975 & 1977 to reach Division 1, relegation was to follow in 1979 & 1980.

In 1982-83 they became a founding member of the Northern Counties East League, originally in the NCEL Division Two North before league reorganisations led them to Division One in 1991. They rarely finish in the top half of the league in the 1990’s and finished bottom in 2001-2 & 2003-4.

At the start of 2004-5, Jim Collis became manager and at this point fortunes on the

pitch started to improve dramatically. In his first season, Albion finished 5th in the league, the following year a 3rd place finish meant promotion was missed by one point.

Jimmy Reid took over as manager in 2006, but his time was blighted by off the field problems. An attempted hostile takeover by dissident committee members took a massive amount of money to fight. Then in Novem-ber 2007, an attempted arson attack on the clubhouse caused a lot of damage.

Paul Marshall took over at the start of 2008-9, in his first season he played mostly local players and the team struggled and finished 17th. In 2009-10, with an influx of a few new key players, Albion won the NCEL Division One title.

In 2010, Rob Northfield, took over as Chairman of Tadcaster Albion (2010) Ltd, and the club became a company limited by guarantee.

Albion finished fourth in their first season in the NCEL Premier Division and won the NCEL President’s Cup, beating Farsley AFC 5-1 in the final. That was followed by an 8th place finish and last season they finished 6th.

Rob Northfield resigned a few days before the start of this season and i2i Sports Ltd agreed to take effective control of the club and company, with Matthew Gore becoming the new Chairman. In i2i’s first season in charge, the club narrowly missed out on promotion having gone on a 25-game unbeaten run which led to them being named Robbie Savage’s “non-league team of the day” on Radio Five Live.

Welcome to our first game of the season against Shaw Lane Aquaforce who have travelled here today from Barnsley. Shaw Lane were promoted from the NCEL Division One last season, and are fully expected to be one of the top teams in the NCEL Premier Division this season.

The Ducks have invested heavily in their squad over the summer – signing a whole raft of quality players including former Nottingham Forest midfielder Matt Thornhill, so we know we have to be on our toes if we are to start the season off with a win. Shaw Lane also have an excellent manager in Craig Elliott, so there’s no doubting they will be a fit and well-organised side.

We hope that you are all impressed with the improvements we’ve made to the ground over the summer months. As we keep saying it is still very much a work in progress. We’re still looking at how we can improve the seating areas, so please watch this space. Talks are also still ongoing about a possible move away from Ings Lane, but these things are bound to take time, so please bear with us.

The pitch is looking fantastic, though we’re told by our groundsman that there’s still room for plenty of improvement! All we can say is it’s in a lot better shape than the start of last season. We’re very excited to have a TAFC development squad this season, which we are sure will make a huge difference to the standard of the first team in the future. Though the development squad won’t be playing in a league, they will be playing regular games against similar aged sides from the Conference and Football League.

May we close by sending our congratulations to Nicky Deverdics who has recently secured a contract with Dover Athletic in the Conference. Nicky played a big part in the latter half of last season for TAFC, and we wish him all the very best in his career. We know how delighted he is to be back at a professional club.

Enjoy the game and fingers crossed for another exciting season for the Brewers!

If Newcastle made it to a final, it would be amazing to be there.Which opposition team do you look forward to playing the most? I always like playing well-supported teams like Scarborough. The more fans, the better atmosphere. Most embarrassing mo-ment on a football field? Losing 8-1 to Brighouse last season. I wanted the ground to swallow me up.What is your personal aim this season? It’s got to be promotion.Which training drill do you dread the most? I hate the bleep test! Can’t say I ever dread ballwork.

If you could be another team-mate for a week, who would it be and why? Aaron Reid. Then I may start to realise what goes on in that head of his!Who are the best and worst dressed TAFC players? Not a fan of some of the lad’s clobber. Simon Collins (first team coach) always looks smart. Worst has to be Danny Critchlow (awful gear!)What’s the best practical joke you’ve seen one of your team-mates play? It’s hard to play them as we don’t spend time together in the week like the professionals do, but putting deep heat in someone’s boxers always gets a laugh.

Which TAFC player is the least likely to get a round in? James Coupland. Tight as a camel’s a*** in a sandstorm.Biggest influence on career? Neil Redfearn – signed me as a YT at York. Paul Marshall – believed in my ability at 18 at Tad.Proudest football moment? Signing YTS contract at York City at 16. TAFC’s best player and why? Denny Ingram. The desire he shows at 38 is admirable. He commands respect. Terry Taylor – on his day he is a joy to play with.

    Club HistoryShaw Lane Aquaforce FC

Shaw Lane Aquaforce F.C. was formed in 2012 with the merging of two clubs , Barugh F.C.(1991), one of Barnsley’s’ finest junior clubs ,and Aquaforce F.C.(2007)the successful senior club who were causing quite a stir in the Barnsley and Sheffield leagues .

Barugh Boys u11s was first entered into the Barnsley Junior League as the only team in the club. We were a small village team whose popular-ity created a lot of interest and soon developed into a club who initially played all our home games in the village of Barugh .

With the development of ladies/girls we changed the club name to Barugh F.C. and introduced female teams into the club .

In 2005 Barugh F.C. Were invited to play our games at Shaw Lane Sports Association to accommodate our growing membership . We gained F.A. Charter Standards and in 2007 we were awarded a £1,000,000 grant from the Football Foundation /Sport England to build new changing rooms and function rooms.

We have currently 20 junior teams , girls and boys running from Shaw Lane and are currently the only Barnsley club with the F.A. Commu-nity Charter status .

Aquaforce F.C. was formed in 2007 playing in the South Yorkshire Amat-uer League and soon began making a name for themselves . They were asked by the league to take over a struggling Worsboro Common F.C. side in the County Senior League and this prompted the introduction of coach Doug O’Connor to take the first team while Kev Wright continued to coach the second team .

Players needed to be added to a small first team squad and O’Connor made his signings which saw them enjoy an incredible run losing only 2 league games and gain promotion

to the Premier League . They also reached the League Cup semi-final and showed great fighting spirit to win the Rosehill Cup , equalising with seconds of normal time remain-ing and then going on to win 3-1 in extra time .

In 2012 under our new name, Shaw Lane Aquaforce F.C. had a team capable of an assault on the County Senior Premier League with a mix of young and experienced players . The season was hard fought and the club suffered only 1 defeat which was incredibly their opening fixture!

The next stage in our plan was to enter into the North East Counties League . We had entered into an agreement with our Shaw Lane part-ners , Barnsley Rugby Club, to share their pitch and consulted with offi-cials from the NECL to ensure that the ground came up to the conditions required.

The biggest problem was to lengthen the pitch by 16m which meant we had to remove a massive bank to do this . To compound matters we were going through arctic weather condi-tions which lasted through Easter 2013, and this had a frustrating ef-fect on things as the time schedule was tight . Nevertheless we worked hard and managed to complete the work on time , despite rumours to the contrary !!!

We had all the work endorsed by the F.A. and all that was left now was to attend the NECL AGM and secure the votes from the League members . We were not accepted into the league which was unprecedented and would ultimately mean that league rules were changed to ensure that this could never happen again..

The only course that was for us now was to appeal to the F.A. ! We at-tended the hearing at Wembley along with league officials from the NECL and were successful in our hearing .

We were now officially promoted into the NECL !!!!! Throughout all of this we felt that we had done no wrong and conducted ourselves with dignity , resisting any temptation to attach blame for what Shaw Lane aqua-force F.C. had to endure.

Our season 2013/14 was a big step into the unknown for us both on and off the field . We got off to a great start and began playing good football despite doubters saying that football and rugby couldn’t work side by side, picking up points along the way . By Christmas we had become league leaders but we never opened up any sizeable leads and were always aware of other clubs being in striking distance .

The wet winter months took their toll on the playing surface at Shaw Lane and we were constantly battling against the rain with games being postponed to create a fixture pile up at the end of the season .

Our form after Christmas suffered but we held on and although we didn’t win the league , we gained promo-tion at our first attempt , a remarkable achievement by anyones standards . What was equally important is that we did this with attractive football on the field and with grace and dignity off it. We made friends and gained the trust of other clubs !

We know promotion to the Premier league is another huge leap for us in the 2014/15 season and we believe we can contribute to the quality of this league . We hope for success but we expect nothing !!

The history of Shaw Lane Aquaforce F.C. goes on !
