Materials and Set Up:

o Have a copy of the tic tac toe worksheets on the students’ desks before they come to the carpet for whole group explanations.

o You should have the worksheets sitting out on a large table, and laid out to make it easy for the students to identify which worksheets are which.

Introduction:

Introduce the tic tac toe worksheet by explaining the idea behind the tic tac toe board to the students as a whole class, along with the corresponding worksheet. As a result, if there are any initial questions they can be addressed for all students to hear to avoid any confusion that may occur. This was designed to correlate with Mrs. Parten’s unit she was doing focusing on Thanksgiving.

Description of Activities:

o Bodily/ Kinesthetic- Trace your hand and make a turkey out on construction paper.I believe that this will test the students’ coordination, with their ability to hold their hand down, and use the other to trace with.

o Verbal/ Linguistic- Tell a classmate what your favorite thing about Thanksgiving and why it is your favorite.I think that this activity, if guided by the teacher will help students improve their communication skills, which are vital in life.

o Visual/ Spatial - Use the provided foldable to illustrate the beginning, middle, and end of a Thanksgiving story you have heard. With this activity the student ability to create a foldable correctly is tested. I think that it will be a good indicator as to whether or not the students possess the ability to copy what they see.

o Musical- Write a short song about Thanksgiving, for example what you are

thankful for. This activity opens the door for students to express themselves through a different avenue that they may not have been able to explore yet.

o Artistic- Color a picture of a pilgrim or Indian and make a puppet with a Popsicle stick. This activity is something that all students at this age will be able to enjoy. They will get to make something they can play with and show off to friends and family.

o Naturalistic- Use pine straw and acorns to create a picture about Thanksgiving.I did not want to take the students outside because of how cold it has been, and because if the students read that they got to go outside I would have the whole class wanting to go out. I think that this is a great way to bring the outdoors inside for the students to manipulate.

o Logical/ Mathematical- Complete the math activity sheet featuring math problems with Indians and Pilgrims.I used Pilgrims and Indians as counters on a worksheet as a review for the students. I thought that it would make math fun for the students, while still challenging them a little bit.

o Interpersonal- Write a story about what you and your family do on Thanksgiving, and share it with a friend. This is a great way for students to work on composing their thoughts in a formal format to share with a friend, instead of just talking to a friend about their families Thanksgiving.

o Intrapersonal- Write a letter to a pilgrim or Indian and ask questions about the first Thanksgiving.Writing a letter is an engaging way to get students involved in their thoughts, without having them share with someone else. It gives them the opportunity to communicate with someone without actually talking to them, in case they are shy.

Reflection:

Overall, I think that my Tic Tac Toe board went over very well. The students seemed to really enjoy themselves, and the activities I was asking them to do. A few of the students struggled with making their choices, which I did not anticipate. This was a little unnerving initially until my mentor teacher suggested putting a time limit on the activity so that students would be more apt to making their choices quickly so that they could get started on their activities. I thought that this suggestion helped a lot to speed things along, and get students on task.

After my teachers suggestion for the time limit things went along very smoothly. The students were enjoying the activities they were doing, and they seemed to really be getting a lot out of the

lesson. I was a little apprehensive about using a Tic Tac Toe board in second grade just because of their age, and the fact that they may not be able to handle the independence, but after using it I am very pleased with the outcome and now know that it is suitable for most ages. I look forward to using it during student teaching, and in my future teaching career.
