Mystery 2 Today, I want to tell you a true story about a place and about a guy whose name was Charles Ellis. Charles built something right in this spot, and what he built is world-famous. You'll see by the end of the Mystery that you'll probably recognize it. For this story, we have to go back in time. We're going to go to the year 1929, almost a century ago. Charles was an engineer -- that's someone who uses science in order to build things. And Charles faced a challenge. You see, he had been called to help two cities on the West Coast of North America. Between the two cities was this wide channel of water. The two cities often traded goods with each other, and some people even went between each city to work each day. But there was only one way to get across this stretch of water: by boat. It wasn't great. A boat ride took over 45 minutes to get from one side to the other. The people in the two cities wanted Charles to build a bridge across the big channel of water, so they could drive their cars and trucks from one city to the other. And they didn't want just any bridge: they wanted a bridge that would be beautiful -- really nice looking, something the whole world would admire, something that could be famous. A lot of experts said a bridge couldn't be built there. They said the distance was too great. It was more than a mile across. They also thought that the water in the channel was too deep. And it was really deep. If you sucked out all the water in this spot, like that, you'd see it was almost 400 feet down to the bottom. And what's more, lots of huge ships needed to get through the channel of water -- big ships like cargo ships, cruise ships, Navy ships. Any bridge that was going to be built couldn't have a lot of pillars or supports underneath it because those would block the passageway for huge ships like these. So, how could a bridge meet all of these challenges? Today, just like Charles, you're going to design your own bridge. You'll compete for fun with some of your classmates to see who can make their bridge the strongest. Now, unlike Charles, you don't need to worry about your bridge being able to carry people or cars. You just have to worry about your bridge holding some pennies on it for weight. For this, you're going to make a bridge out of paper. But since you might not have thought much about designing bridges before, let me tell you a little bit more about the story of Charles Ellis, the engineer, so that you can learn something about designing bridges. Now the first question any bridge designer might ask is: well, what's wrong with just a really long board? After all, that's the simplest kind of bridge. Like, imagine all we had to do was cross a little stream or creek. It's just wide enough that you probably don't want to jump. So you might lay down a board to walk across. But see, if the creek were even a little wider, you start running into problems with putting a board across because the board now has to be longer in order to reach the other side. The longer a board, the more it weighs. And the more it weighs, the more it sags under its own weight. And now, if you add a weight on top of that, like a person walking, then the sagging downwards gets even worse. If you put too much weight on it, it might sag down into the water or

even snap. So what could you do with a bridge like this? How could you keep it from sagging? One idea we had was you could put a pillar underneath the board to keep it from sagging. This is the idea they used for a bridge like this in Louisiana.

Where the bridge would have been sagging, they put big pillars underneath it to keep it from sagging. The weight of the road and any cars or trucks driving on it pushes down. So something is needed to push back up otherwise the bridge will fail and break. As long as you have lots of supporting pillars, it’s possible to build a bridge as long as you want it to be. The Lake Pontchartrain bridge here is really long, it’s one of the longest bridges in the world. When you build your paper bridge, maybe you can build it super long using pillars like this. But poor Charles can’t just build a bridge with pillars all along it because Charles has to deal with a really deep channel and there has to be room for large ships to go through. So suppose we have a situation where a bridge is going over something really deep. You can’t just put a stick or pillar to support a bridge in the middle, BUT you can put 2 pillars off to the side like these bridges here.

Now you’re supporting the middle of the bridge because the force of the weight is pushing off to the sides. You can probably guess what this kind of bridge is called, it’s an arch bridge! Arch bridges are a very

popular design for bridges, you may even have one near where you live. So, could Charles use an arch bridge design? This definitely would make for a beautiful bridge, and it wouldn’t have any pillars underneath so that’s great for his problems, but unfortunately he can’t use this design because arch bridges can only be so long. If an arch bridge is too long, the sides won’t support the weight of the bridge. The longest arch bridge in the world is just over 550 feet across. The gap of water Charles Ellis needs to cross is over 5,000 feet, that’s almost a mile across! This design may work well for your bridge made out of paper, but this won’t work for Charles Ellis. He needs a different design. There is a 3rd design that is possible. Now remember with a pillar bridge you are using pillars to push up on the weight of the bridge from down below, and in an arch bridge you are using two pillars off to the sides to push up on the weight from the sides. But notice, for both designs, they’re pushing UP on the bridges. What if you didn’t have anything pushing up on the bridge? Could the bridge have something pulling down instead? Well, you can! This kind of bridge is called a suspension bridge. If you know the word suspenders this is easy to remember. It’s called this because the bridge suspends, or hangs, from towers, it’s a pulling force. The road is here, and the weight of it or anything driving on it, is supported by ropes made of steel supported by the towers.

THIS is the design that Charles Ellis chose to cross over the channel of water. And when he did this, he created one of the most famous bridges in the world. In fact, I chose not to tell you the cities the bridges connected on purpose. The city on one side is San Francisco, CA and the city on the other side is called Sausalito. Now by now, you may have guessed which bridge Charles Ellis designed. It’s this: The Golden Gate Bridge. The suspension bridge design solved all of Charles’ problems. It was able to cross the wide gap of water, but without needing any pillars in the middle where it was so deep and

large ships could still go through. To make this bridge, Charles and his crew had to construct 2 large towers that were placed in the shallower ends of the channel to hang the bridge from. Then they hung the bridge itself, the roadway, using incredibly strong steel cables.

When it was completed in 1937, the Golden Gate bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. And it still makes the top 10 list, but even if it is not the longest suspension bridge anymore, it is still one of the most famous probably for its beautiful design, its striking dark orange color, and the incredible views from almost anywhere near the bridge. People often ask, why is it called the Golden Gate bridge? It’s orange, not gold! Well the channel of water underneath the bridge is called the channel of the Golden Gate, so it’s named for the body of water it crosses, not for its color. That’s the story of Charles Ellis the engineer and the bridge he built, the Golden Gate Bridge! Now might be a time to think about the bridges you have seen, and what makes a bridge strong. There’s one little extra thing that you can do to make a bridge extra strong. This may be something you want to know before you go designing a paper bridge. If we think about the world’s simplest bridge, a simple board across the stream. Remember if the board is very long, it would sag in the middle, and if you walked on it the board may sag in the middle or even break and tip into the water. But if you turned the board so that it’s on its side, it’s a LOT stronger! If you were to walk on it now, it wouldn’t sag. It

can support a lot of weight. So if you took 2 boards and put them on their side, and then put a flat board on top for walking over, this bridge alone would be stronger than the flat board across. What’s crazy is that this bridge doesn’t even have to be turned this way. If you nailed those 3 boards together, and then you turned them so it’s facing upwards, it still has the same strength. The 2 boards pointing up make this bridge stiff, they keep the bridge from sagging. Many real life bridges are made this way, but they

use steel instead of wood since steel is even stronger. The problem is, steel is very heavy, so bridge builders thought about how they could make a bridge like this, but keep it light. They realized it doesn’t have to be one giant flat piece of steel along the side. You could also have steel beams or poles, and it would be just as strong, but a whole lot lighter. They call this type of bridge a truss bridge, for the French word for bundle, since it’s like a bundle of beams or poles. But all it is is a lightweight version of this, a way to make it stronger. Sometimes you can even see a truss design inside of other types of bridges too! Even the Golden Gate Bridge uses a truss underneath the roadway to support it. So you may want to consider that as you are building your own paper bridge.

Little Red Riding Hood by Leanne Guenther

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in a village near the forest. Whenever she went out, the little girl wore a red riding cloak, so everyone in the village called her Little Red Riding Hood.

One morning, Little Red Riding Hood asked her mother if she could go to visit her grandmother as it had been awhile since they'd seen each other. "That's a good idea," her mother said. So they packed a nice basket for Little Red Riding Hood to take to her grandmother.

When the basket was ready, the little girl put on her red cloak and kissed her mother goodbye. "Remember, go straight to Grandma's house," her mother cautioned. "Don't dawdle along the way and please don't talk to strangers! The woods are dangerous." "Don't worry, mommy," said Little Red Riding Hood, "I'll be careful."

But when Little Red Riding Hood noticed some lovely flowers in the woods, she forgot her promise to her mother. She picked a few, watched the butterflies flit about for awhile, listened to the frogs croaking and then picked a few more.

Little Red Riding Hood was enjoying the warm summer day so much that she didn't notice a dark shadow approaching out of the forest behind her...

Suddenly, the wolf appeared beside her. "What are you doing out here, little girl?" the wolf asked in a voice as friendly as he could muster. "I'm on my way to see my Grandma who lives through the forest, near the brook," Little Red Riding Hood replied. Then she realized how late she was and quickly excused herself, rushing down the path to her Grandma's house.

The wolf, in the meantime, took a shortcut... The wolf, a little out of breath from running, arrived at Grandma's and knocked lightly at the door. "Oh thank goodness dear! Come in, come in! I was worried sick that something had happened to you in the forest," said Grandma thinking that the knock was her granddaughter. The wolf let himself in. Poor Granny did not have time to say another word, before the wolf gobbled her up!

The wolf let out a satisfied burp, and then poked through Granny's wardrobe to find a nightgown that he liked. He added a frilly sleeping cap, and for good measure, dabbed some of Granny's perfume behind his pointy ears. A few minutes later, Red Riding Hood knocked on the door. The wolf jumped into bed and pulled the covers over his nose. "Who is it?" he called in a crackly voice. "It's me, Little Red Riding Hood." "Oh how lovely! Do come in, my dear," croaked the wolf.

When Little Red Riding Hood entered the little cottage, she could scarcely recognize her Grandmother. "Grandmother! Your voice sounds so odd. Is something the matter?" she asked.

"Oh, I just have a touch of a cold," squeaked the wolf, adding a cough at the end to prove the point.

"But Grandmother! What big ears you have," said Little Red Riding Hood as she edged closer to the bed. "The better to hear you with, my dear," replied the wolf. "But Grandmother! What big eyes you have," said Little Red Riding Hood. "The better to see you with, my dear," replied the wolf.

"But Grandmother! What big teeth you have," said Little Red Riding Hood her voice quivering slightly. "The better to eat you with, my dear," roared the wolf and he leapt out of the bed and began to chase the little girl.

Almost too late, Little Red Riding Hood realized that the person in the bed was not her Grandmother, but a hungry wolf. She ran across the room and through the door, shouting, "Help! Wolf!" as loudly as she could.

A woodsman who was chopping logs nearby heard her cry and ran towards the cottage as fast as he could.

He grabbed the wolf and made him spit out the poor Grandmother who was a bit frazzled by the whole experience, but still in one piece."Oh Grandma, I was so scared!" sobbed Little Red Riding Hood, "I'll never speak to strangers or dawdle in the forest again."

"There, there, child. You've learned an important lesson. Thank goodness you shouted loud enough for this kind woodsman to hear you!"

The woodsman knocked out the wolf and carried him deep into the forest where he wouldn't bother people any longer.

Little Red Riding Hood and her Grandmother had a nice lunch and a long chat.

Rap : Music that includes rhythmic speech more than singing voices and usually with electronic instruments. Cardi B is one popular rapper. Can you perform the ABC’s in rap style?

Classical: An orchestra includes violins, violas, cellos, string basses, brass instruments like trumpets, trombones and tubas, french horns, and woodwinds like flutes and clarinets; timpani drums for percussion (large, loud drums with pedals) and are sometimes led by other instruments such as piano or harp, or voice. One popular classical musician today is Yo-Yo Ma. Imagine Twinkle performed by a whole orchestra, or maybe just one Cello!

Pop : Music usually heard on the radio and popular with young people. The tempo can range from fast to slow. Instruments vary, and there is usually a lead singer. This music includes popular artists such as Taylor Swift. Can you imagine Taylor Swift singing Rock-a-Bye Baby?

Blues: Music that usually includes guitar and/or voice, and lyrics or music that tell a sad story. One popular blues artist would be BB King. How about the “Mary Had a Little Lamb Blues”?

Rock: Music that is also heard on the radio and usually includes electric guitars, drums, bass guitar, and voice. Rock music includes bands like AC/DC.

Jazz : Music that usually involves instruments like voice, piano, bass, drums, sometimes guitar, saxophone or brass instruments like the trumpet. Jazz music uses a wide variety of notes and rhythms, and lots of tempos (speeds) as well. One Example of a jazz musician is Duke Ellington.
