ALBANY Avalanche Manager: Pat Barry Age: 53 Occupation: Financial Analyst

The Season Story

My best season in the Retros so far. Bill Freehan, Jimmy Wynn and John Milner paced a red hot offense. There was lots of part time assistance as well from the whole roster. The pitching staff were no slouches either. Jim Perry bolstered a fine staff, but in the final period against Sioux Falls, the Avs got their comeuppance from Jeff Chapman's fine squad. Albany looks to be good for a few years before retooling. Thanks to Mike and Jim for their fine work!

ARKANSAS Travelers Manager: Bill “Willie” Jelks (Lynda) Age: 68 Occupation: Retired USAF Flyboy

The Season Story

Travelers endure their fifth consecutive 100+ loss season which SHOULD be their last for a spell as some of the oldsters seem to be stirring to life especially Henry Aaron, Joe Torre, Harmon Killebrew and Glen Beckert. The Travs will go into the 1973 season looking to be competitive for the first time.

BEVERLY Hillbillies Manager: Mike Dickinson (Andrea) Age: 41 Occupation: Scientist

The Season Story

The team struggled throughout the season as poor pitching plagued the Hillbillies. Erstwhile aces Doug Rau and Clay Kirby pitched more like jokers and lost 40 games combined. John "The Count" Montefusco also managed to count 21 losses. Only one pitcher on the staff (reliever Jim Todd) managed an ERA well below 5.00! Offensively the Hillbillies received a solid performance from slugging 1st baseman Dick Allen (34 HRS) and unexpected performances from OFs Leroy Stanton and Charlie Spikes. The roster is thin but there are a handful of players whose performance will improve as they get younger. The team needs to jettison the dead weight, add some retired talent and start building for the past!

BLOOMINGTON Burning Bunyans Manager: Bob Weisman (Janet) Age: 51 Occupation: Meteorology Professor

The Season Story

Bloomington managed to finish third again behind the Cheticamp and Coopers Pond Juggernauts and a more distant third this time. However, given few expectations, It was fun to run this football-like team (offensive and defensive substitutions) and actually hit most of the at-bat limits, making Lord Jim happy. Paul Splittorff turning in a surprisingly good season and Pedro Borbon was great in relief. The set up guys, however, specialized in bullpen gags. Roger Metzger was a pleasant surprise at SS, and Larry Hisle carried the offense. The Burning Bunyans look to drive opposition managers nuts with at bat and relief limits in 1973 with better pitching, but a tag-team approach to hitting again.

CHETICAMP Micmacs Manager: Eric Rogers Age: 53 Occupation: Meteorologist

TML Champion

The Season Story

A milestone season for the Cheticamp franchise: after falling behind Coopers Pond going into Period 3, the Micmacs caught fire, going 23-4 at seasons end (including a 14 game winning streak) to edge CP by one game for the division with 109 wins, the best record in team history. The fun continued with a 4-2 series win over Pensacola, followed by winning the franchise's first TML Championship against a great Sioux Falls team! Garvey and Morgan really starred in the TML World Series, as the Micmacs came back strong after being down 3 games to 1. The Micmacs offense was truly scary (.308 team batting average during the regular season), with 7 of 9 starters hitting over .300. Pitching was anchored by Seaver, Cuellar, and Lyle (32 SV). What a season!

COACHELLA VALLEY Earthquakes Manager: Mike Landin (Teri) Age: 58 Occupation: Retired/Part-time Professor/Softball Player

The Season Story

The Earthquakes emerged with their 8th consecutive division title, but suffered their worst playoff defeat in their 36-year history. After going up 3 games to none against the tough Sioux Falls squad, they dropped the final four games to be denied a trip to the TML World Series! That playoff series featured the strongest overall pitching in any TML post-season series and should have gone 7 games, but not that way. The Quakes took a while to get going during the regular season, as they lost an unusual number of 1-run games early, but the deep, strong starting staff prevailed in the end. It was led by 20-game winners Jon Matlack (21-11, 1.96), Bert Blyleven (21-10, 2.38) and Carl Morton (20-15, 2.58). Newcomer Tom Murphy saved 36 games, but was erratic as the “closer.” Part-timer Larry Gura (7-0, 1.88) chipped in from time to time. Offensively, newcomer Cesar Cedeno (.292, 33 HR, 343 TB, 110 RC) and Richie Hebner (.328, 19 HR, 107 RC) led the attack. Bob Watson (.289, 89 R), Dave Winfield (.281, 27 HR), Toby Harrah (.263, 25 HR) and veteran Rusty Staub (.259, 85 RBI) anchored a solid batting order. Time is running out on this franchise, but should be quite competitive again in 1973.

COOPERS POND Braves Manager: Chick Wade (Debbie) Age: 61 Occupation: IT Administrator

The Season Story

Coopers Pond was trying to repeat as Champs and made a couple of deals to help reach that goal. Unfortunately, the Braves fell 1 game short of the post season even with 108 wins! As in 75, the Braves had strong pitching, lead by Ross Grimsley with 21 wins, Catfish Hunter with 20 wins and Jim Kaat with 17 wins. Clay Carroll (who grew up with all though he was a bit older than I) had 39 saves with a 1.95 ERA! The offense was lead by Bill Buckner/.339 avg & 45 steals. Tony Perez hit 26 HRs and had 123 RBIs. Johnny Bench almost matched Perez with 24 HRs and 115 RBIs.

CORTLAND Red Dragons Manager: George Mowry Age: ?? Occupation: ???

The Season Story

The team's offense never hit it's stride until it was too late. Thurman Munson, the team leader, never got untracked. Lou Brock, expected to be the sparkplug of the team inexplicably go into a quarrel with the automanager and did not play in the last 22 road games shattering his shot at 100 steals. Lee May and Big Cliff Johnson did hit the ball hard though. Mickey Lolich was steady and the pitching staff deserved better than they got.

DULUTH Thundercats Manager: Kevin Tyle Age: 47 Occupation: Computer Administrator/Meteorologist

The Season Story

Duluth flirted with respectability through the first half of the season, but as the winds grew chillier at the head of the Great Lakes, so went the 'Cats. Anemic offense meant that the pitchers could make few mistakes, but there were just not enough arms besides those of staff leaders Busby and Capra. Hitting performances, as well as bullpen numbers, were "Scarce" in more ways than one! Only four hitters, led by Bill Melton (26), went into double digits in home runs. Billy Williams and Boog Powell were the only Thundercats to hit better than .250. While the "Buzz" ebbs from both Capra and Busby, Duluth fans look for the mold to slowly fade from Gibson, Santo, Williams, and Powell, so hopefully improvement is on the way for '73.

JOHNSTOWN Johnnies Manager: Brandon Rose (Anne) Age: 57 Occupation: Retired

The Season Story

Team MVP Peter Edward Rose chalked up another 200 hit season and was solid all around driving in 84 while scoring 118. Rick Monday and Jorge Orta took turns batting him in as the Johnnies' attack was steady all year. The pitching was excellent too, led by Don Sutton's 18 wins. Tough to be in the same division with Coachella as no one in the division has been able to challenge them during the past 8 years. The Johnstown Johnnies slowly but surely continue to improve. The 1974 team still leaned to much on pitching and not enough offense. Team management has promised the hometown faithful that they will add some offense this off-season for the next season. So look for plenty of excitement at historic Point Stadium. On to 1973!

MOOSEN Squirrel Manager: Bill Graham (Cathy) Age: 61 Occupation: Attorney

The Season Story

The season got off to a good start but the Moosen Squirrel just did not have the horses to repeat its 1975 run at the playoffs. The bullpen was particularly a sore point. Moosen is a team that relies on pitching to protect the slim leads given it by the offense. While some, such Ed Sprague and Dale Murray performed well, other - notably Charlie Hough - pitched well below expectations. Team favorites Ron Cey and Dusty Baker will not be returning in '73. Tough decision by management but the Squirrel are entering a rebuilding phase and Baker and Cey wind up on contending teams.

NORTH ADAMS Bevers Manager: Mike Ameen (Beverly) Age: 47 Occupation: Restaurant Owner/Softball Coach

The Season Story

The 1974 season was a good one for the Bevers. Finishing second in our division to a tough Pensacola team with a record of 88-72. It was fun this year managing the Bevers. Lots of offense and good pitching hopefully will carry over into 1973 and we can make another run at our division and the playoffs. The Bevers were led on offense by Joe Rudi (.303-23-117) and Al Oliver (.295-17-88) with 99 runs scored and 30 doubles and 6 triples. Also contributing was Bert Campaneris (.314-22 SB) and Willie Stargell who clubbed 16 HR's and was the leader of a tight knit clubhouse. The Bevers pitching staff is a veteran group: Jim Lonborg (18-8, 3.59), Luis Tiant (15-10, 3.18) and Pat Dobson (13-13, 3.27). On the reliever side of the equation Randy Moffitt was the most dependable pitcher out of the Bever pen with 12 saves and a 2.33 era. So much of the Bevers team is getting younger and stronger and we look forward to a bright 1973-1970 period. A few good draft picks and filling a few holes could help us make our run to the top of our division and beyond, as Buzz Lightyear might say!

It was a fun 80-80 season. I have enjoyed each of these seasons as they have flown by and have also enjoyed being Switzerland over a lot of things. As we roll into these upcoming drafts, the greats of my youth are entering the league and I get excited. Like 1975, the pitching was superb, the batting was thin. Put Fergie Jenkins and Andy Messersmith on a contender and they would be candidates for Pitcher of the year. Nonetheless, I love it and hope that my health continues as is so to see it through with my partner in Crime, Mike Landin!!

RENSSELAER Strikers Manager: Joe Nocera (Donna) Age: 37 Occupation: Scientific Programmer

The Season Story

The season went pretty much as expected in Rensselaer. There was plenty of offensive firepower, but very little pitching. The offense was led by sluggers Bob Bailey (432 OBP, 30 HR, 104 RBI, 121 R), Darrell Evans (388 OBP, 32 HR, 135 RBI, 108 R) and Bobby Darwin (23 HR, 128 RBI). Part-time starter Roger Nelson (2.64 ERA, 102.1 inn) was the only bright spot in a pitching staff that loved to toss BP during the game. 1973 looks to bring more of the same in Rensselaer. The offense may get even better, while amazingly, the pitching may get even worse.

SIOUX FALLS Fighting Sioux Manager: Jeff Chapman (Sally) Age: 45 Occupation: NWS Meteorologist

The Season Story

A random convergence of individual performance and team effort brought the Fighting Sioux to the brink of manager Chapman's first title. Feels a little empty after a 115 win season and the incredible comeback from an 0-3 deficit in the Conference Championship. Was it becoming an "average" fielding team that put us over the top? No, it had to be the wiretapping of the opposing locker rooms by our intern G. Gordon Liddy. The 'Quakes might have a little deep-seeded resentment after that series! A blockbuster pre-season trade to acquire Tommy John laid a foundation upon which the MVP seasons of Carew (.372) and Gaylord Perry (franchise record 28 Wins) were built. Ryan whiffed 352, and it was hard to find many categories in which Sioux players did not rank near the top.

The Season Story

Bryan bailed during the draft due to the overwhelming passing of the new draft system. Unable to get a replacement, I got to guide one of the American's storied franchises for the near past. The team was severely short of a lot of things (hmm) like batting and pitching and barely escaped having three 20 game losers. Ken Henderson and George Scott had great seasons amidst the muck and mire and every series was a jigsaw puzzle as the deck was constantly shuffled. The future is a little brighter drafting veteran Luis Aparicio in hopes he gets younger.

Stat Key

RC (Runs Created) = [(A times B) plus C], all divided by D, where

A = H + BB + HBP - CS – GIDP B = TB + [.26 x (BB - IBB + HBP)] C = .52 x (SH + SF + SB) D = AB + BB + HBP + SH + SF

RC / 27 outs: runs created per 27 outs; in other words, the number of runs a player would create if he were to bat in all nine positions in the batting order. QS (Quality Starts): the number of starts in which a pitcher pitches six (6) innings or more and gives up three (3) runs or fewer. OAVG: the batting percentage against each pitcher. ************************************************************** Batting & Pitching Leaders: the following symbols were used to denote individual accomplishments that were record-breakers:

♦ - TML Record

◊ - Tied TML Record Team Stats: an asterisk ( * ) preceding any stat indicates that the player or pitcher led his Association in that stat category; a caret ( ^ ) indicates that the player or pitcher tied for the lead in his Association in that stat category.
