2 2013 Annual Report
As this year comes to a close, it has truly been a blessing to share this year with you, my Tabernacle Church Family! This is the time that we recall all the magnificent things the Lord has done for us within a twelve month period of time. God’s blessings and grace have showered down from Heaven and for that I am truly thankful. We must look toward 2014 with the same enthusiasm and faith that we grasped when we first came to Christ.
This year, we celebrated 128 years of service to the Kingdom and the community. I am sure that our founding members and leaders would be pleased with our service and dedication for the last century. This past year we definitely were a church “Taking the Limits Off.” Our membership has increased; winning souls for Christ and adding brothers and sisters to our growing and thriving church family which will continue to extend our reach and influence forth for Christ.
As we look forward to the astonishing year that God has for us as a unified body of believers, I am praising God in advance for the many promises that will come to pass, the expansion of the new worship experience, the elevation, the promotion or just the spirit of contentment that He will grant us in this period of newness.
Jesus taught the disciples that without the Holy Spirit’s empowering no one could be successfully evangelized or discipled. This year I pray that God will allow us to “Empower Disciples.” As disciples of the Kingdom we must be convicted and given revelation by the Holy Spirit. You must ask the Lord to help you trust and obey the Spirit’s directing in all that you do, say and become. Ask the Lord to help you teach in a way that conforms to Christ’s ideal teaching, actions and intentions.
Let us continue to move forward in prayer, thanksgiving, celebration, and in the hope that tomorrow will reflect and expand on the joyous year we have experienced in 2013.
Continuing to Shine for the Light of the World,
Charles E. Goodman, Jr.Reverend Dr. Charles E. Goodman, Jr.Senior Pastor/Teacher Tabernacle Baptist Church

preaching powerful and transforming sermons. In May 2006, Rev. Dr. Moss resigned to accept the pastorate at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois.
Then in November 2006, when Tabernacle Baptist Church was in need of a good man, one, Rev. Dr. Charles E. Goodman, Jr., at age 27, accepted the call as Pastor. Rev. Dr. Goodman has proven to be a dynamic, inspirational preacher, teacher, and visionary. He charged our church to live out the motto of ETS4, which means Exalt the Savior, Evangelize the Sinner, Equip the Saint, and Empower the Society. He is responsible for groundbreaking, completion, and dedication of the $4 million Family Life Center.
He developed our TBC Alliance (501 c3) Corporation to provide future educational and support services for children, families, and the community. New ministries have been organized and established ministries have been strengthened. He has established a marketing and social media team to promote the Church activities locally and around the World through our website and interactive app.
Rev. Dr. Goodman is known for his eloquent and charismatic style of preaching, which has transformed lives around the world, through the power of Jesus Christ. Membership continues to grow at a phenomenal rate. Over twenty-nine hundred new disciples have joined our church family; total membership exceeds 5000. Our extraordinary growth has commanded the shift from two to three dynamic worship services. The 7:30, 9:30 & 11:30 AM worship services and the rebranding of our vision, “A Church
Making an IMPACT,” was implemented in January 2013.
Under Rev. Dr. Goodman’s enthusiastic leadership, God has enlarged our territority by blessing us with resources to acquire new properties for future growth of our ministries and to renovate several areas of our Tabernacle campus to include the nursery, sanctuary and lower level. Rev. Dr. Goodman also strengthened the foundation for governance and management of our church by leading our congregation into adopting our newly, revised constitution and by-laws.
As God continues to bless the Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church, we are invigorated and energized by the fact that we believe God has even greater things in store for us to accomplish for the Kingdom. We eagerly anticipate God enlarging our territory by establishing our reach to extend throughout the CSRA and the world. We are looking for more souls to be saved, lives to be transformed and communities to be empowered.
From a divinely, inspired work conceived in the heart of our founder, Rev. Dr. C.T. Walker, to a congregation of more than 5000 fruitful disciples committed to making an impact for the cause of Christ, we believe the best is yet to come!
About OUR CHURCHThe Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church is celebrating 128 years of rich and impactful history! On Friday August the 21st 1885, Our founder, Rev. Dr. Charles Thomas Walker was called, at age 27, to establish what later would become one of the most prominent African American churches in the southeast. Our Historic Church was initially organized at the Union Baptist Church, under the name of Beulah Baptist Church. On August 23, 1885, the name was changed to Tabernacle Baptist Church. The membership at the time was 310. Construction began on a permanent place of worship on September 1, 1885 on Ellis Street, between Eleventh and Twelfth Streets. In 1913, Tabernacle sold the Ellis Street property and purchased the site at the corner of then Harrison and Gwinnett Street; now C. S. Hamilton Way and Laney Walker Blvd. In 1915, construction was completed on this magnificent edifice. The Rev. Dr. C. T. Walker, a brilliant young man, made his reputation as a pulpit orator, a sound theologian, a soul-winning evangelist, and a resourceful pastor.
During his 14 years of service at Tabernacle, records show that more than 2,000 souls had been converted and more than 1,400 baptized. In 1899, Rev. Dr. Walker resigned as pastor of Tabernacle to accept the Pastorate of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in New York City. Rev. Silas X. Floyd, who served 2 years, superseded Rev. Dr. Walker. In 1901, Rev. Dr. Walker returned to serve as Pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church and remained for a glowing 20-year period. On July 29, 1921, Rev. Dr. C.T. Walker died and was buried at the church in the shadows of the magnificent spires.
Over the next 12 years the following succeeding pastors assumed the cause of ministering the church and the community: Rev. Dr. Silas X. Floyd, Rev. Dr. W.R. Mack, Rev. Dr. D. F. Thompson, Rev. I.J. Yancey, and Rev. Leander A. Pinkston. In February 1946, Rev. A. Leon Lowry was called to pastor
at Tabernacle. Under his leadership much progress was made, and the CT Walker Chapel was dedicated. He resigned in 1955 to accept a pastorate in Tampa, FL. Rev. J.D. Jordan served as interim pastor.
In 1956, Rev. Dr. Charles Spencer Hamilton, at age 27, accepted a call to serve as pastor. He came to Augusta as the United States of America stood on the threshold of the Civil Rights era. During his distinguished tenure of service, Tabernacle became a leader in the changing course of American history. Rev. Dr. Hamilton petitioned the city for an end to segregated facilities and provided courageous leadership in succeeding Civil Rights actions in the Augusta community. Under his leadership, the facilities were renovated and the glorious twin spires secured. The kindergarten and nursery was completed; Child Development Center (CDC) incorporated; Credit Union was established, and additional properties were acquired. After forty years of service and leadership at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Hamilton retired in October 1996. He was granted the honor of Pastor Emeritus. Rev. Dr. Charles Spencer Hamilton died in May 1997.
In July 1997, at 27 years of age, the Rev. Dr. Otis B. Moss, III was called to serve as pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Moss brought dynamic leadership. He initiated numerous new ministries.
He embraced a vision of spiritual growth, service, and empowerment that addressed the needs and challenges of the 21st Century. Membership increased from 125 to 2100. Under his leadership the Sanctuary was renovated. Two services were established to accommodate the growing membership.
Properties were acquired and the vision for the Family Life Center was conceived. The TV Broadcast began. Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III built an awesome reputation across the nation for

Habakkuk 2:3 “For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”
As we begin to embark upon the tremendous opportunity God has placed on our shoulders, I am filled with anticipation and praise to God. I have diligently sought the Lord for a ten - year, holistic vision for Tabernacle Baptist Church. This work is serious. A generation of believers awaits the fulfillment of this vision; they await the Gospel and they await salvation, which leads to transformation. None of this can happen without you, your personal commitment and sacrifice. Let us take hold of Habakkuk 2:3 in faith. This vision is for this time and it will come to pass.

VISION STRATEGYRev. Dr. Charles E. Goodman Jr., PastorJuly 10, 2007
Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”It is never too soon to do good. With this in mind, I have been continually praying to God for future direction for this church. It was in this time in prayer that God revealed a vision for the church. In this time of communion, God placed ETS4 on my heart. It is a four-prong strategy that encompasses the holistic mission of Tabernacle Baptist Church. This strategy is not exhaustive, rather it is a good foundation on which to build as we seek to accomplish our ultimate mission, which is to save and transform lives through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
