Tabernacle residents may see adip in their electricity bill if thetownship opts to enroll in theBurlington County Energy Aggrega-tion Program.

At last week’s meeting, Taberna-cle Township Committee talkedabout potentially joining the coun-ty’s program in the near future.

Children entering kinder-garten in September must be 5years of age on or before Oct. 1.

Seneca Student Council sponsored its

seventh annual New Jersey Association of Student Council Charity Dinner on Jan. 30.This year’s charity was Christine’s

Hope for Kids. The goal was to spreadawareness of the work of this charitywhile enjoying a delicious dinner preparedby the Community Service Club.

Jean Gianacaci, founder of the charity,gave a heartfelt and powerful presentationof its mission. Christine’s Hope for Kidswas founded in order to continue Chris-tine Gianacaci’s work with disadvantagedchildren. Christine traveled to Haiti for amission of hope but lost her life in the

earthquake. Her parents founded thischarity to continue helping children.

Through the generous donations of those in attendance, Seneca Student Coun-cil raised $1,500 for the Christine’s Hopefor Children.

There’s a new law being pro-

posed in the Assembly that

would require New Jersey

schools to teach students how they

should interact with police officers.

The bill is being touted as a way to pro-

tect both kids and cops, in the wake of

highly-publicized police shootingssuch as Michael Brown in Missouri.

Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, one of

the bill’s sponsors, had some poignant

words about why he thought the bill is

needed:

“Kids have to learn how to behave

when they’re being investigated or

talked to, because they could put them-

selves in jeopardy. It’s also a good effortto protect the police. Kids have to rec-

ognize their authority when they’re

being questioned and how to conduct

themselves.”

Caputo’s words might seem like he is

putting the blame on the deceased kids

in cases such as Brown’s. However, he

says he’s not placing blame on anyone,

rather just seeking to educate kids on

situations they may come across that

no one speaks of: “When a kid jumps

out of a car, he may appear to be

threatening but he’s not – he just may

not understand what those protocols

are.”

It’s a shame that there have been

tragic situations such as those in Mis-

souri that have forced us to propose

laws such as this to protect kids and

cops from dangerous situations. But

that’s the world we live in.

Ultimately, though, we support any

program that educates our students

about life. School isn’t just about math,

science, English and other “tradition-al” subjects. It’s also about preparing

kids for the real world, and dealing

with police, and protection, is real

world stuff.

Education programs with police offi-

cers in schools is nothing new –

D.A.R.E has been around for awhile.

This proposed law, which we support,

is just another step in the right direc-tion to teach students how they can be

better citizens, and how they can bet-

ter interact with the men and women

who are tasked with their protection.

will negotiate a “bulk purchase”of energy supply at a lower pricethan residents currently pay.County freeholders have part-nered with the Burlington Coun-ty Bridge Commission as part of this program.

“This (plan) will make electric-ity less expensive for each indi-vidual and business in Burling-ton County,” Freeholder Bruce

Garganio said during the plan’srollout last year.Cramer said participation in

the program means residentswould purchase their electricityfrom a cooperative rather thanfrom the utility company itself.Tabernacle’s electricity provideris Atlantic City Electric.

“You’d be buying your energyas a cooperative of a larger

group,” Cramer said.Burlington County municipali-

ties can choose whether to jointhe program.

If Tabernacle does enroll, thecounty estimates its residentswould see a 5 percent decrease inelectricity rates, Cramer said.

The township has been dis-cussing the pros and cons of join-ing the program since last year.Cramer said township officialshave talked about a couple of is-sues the program could bring.

“One of the negatives that hasbeen brought up in previous dis-cussions is, as a residential cus-

tomer, you have to opt out not tobe included,” Cramer said.Once an aggregate rate is re-

ceived, residents would be en-rolled with Atlantic City Electricunless they choose to opt out. Res-idents who opt out can thenchoose to receive Atlantic CityElectric’s standard rate or go witha third-party provider. Cramersaid this would only affect a small

group of residents who are en-rolled with a third-party compa-ny.

The township committee didnot make a final decision onwhether to join the program andwill continue to have discussionsin the future.

Township purchasespumper truck

Township committee is movingforward with the purchase of apumper truck that residentsvoted in favor of more than a yearago.

Township committee adopted abond ordinance for the new truckduring the action portion of lastweek’s meeting.

Voters in Tabernacle had votedin favor of purchasing the vehiclein October 2013, but the vehiclewas never purchased due to thefluid situation of the former Tab-ernacle Fire District No. 1. Thedistrict was officially dissolved

last fall, with the township takingover fire services.

“The committee had made acommitment to purchase (thetruck),” Cramer said.

The total cost of the truck is$700,000. The township will makea down payment of $108,000, withthe remaining $592,000 to be paidthrough the issuance of bonds.

The committee also passed aresolution for Tabernacle FireCompany No. 1 to participate inthe state’s Firefighter Certifica-tion Program.
